    Where is all the food?

I am wondering what kind of luck these people are having, these people who say that apples and berries "take too long". Too long for what? I've been "orange starving" and "Orange thirsty" before I stopped to pick some apples. About 15 minutes and 20 or so apples later, I was't hungry at all, and was "dark green hydrated". It isn't broken, just annoying, and I agree apple-picking and berry-picking should be "fixed" (and that foraging should be made much more viable as a gameplay style. BRING ON THE MESOLITHIC), but you can survive on apples and berries. Those who "can't" I think are just lazy and get frustrated without "instant success".

Why is everyone making fun of me

So, then they could focus on finding food and water before fistfighting for no reason? They DONT have to stay in Berezino. In 20 minutes, they could feasibly cover quite the distance. In any one of the small towns around Berezino, which I almost NEVER see anyone in, by the way, they just might find enough food to survive. I've made it from Berezino to SINISTOK before, in 30 minutes, by sprinting the whole way. Granted, I knew where I was going, but it is possible. When you realize just how small the map actually is, and how fast your character is capable of moving overland, most of the complaining (and, even most of the threads asking for MOAR VEHICKELS!) seems rather amusing in comparison.

Why is everyone making fun of me

Yep, and almost solely in the large cities, where PvP happens. They find a random article of clothing that wouldn't be all that effective for survival, any melee weapon (usually a shitty one, as all the "good" ones are already taken), and go kill each other in the streets. They die, and do it again. And again. I've seen the same person come back to the same city 4 times in order to clusterfuck in the streets.

Why is everyone making fun of me

It isn't about the "choice of civilian clothing", Deathlove, it is about the people who think the game is about PvPing along the coast. While Hick's quote is humerous, I've seen too many players to count running around in Berezino (and even a pair at the NORTHWEST AF) wearing nothing other than one of the dresses (why the devs thought it would be a "useful" item to put in, I have no idea) trying to beat the shit out of other people with brooms, fire extinguishers, and wrenches.

    Aircraft: Planes

If anything, it is too SMALL for small aircraft. The map is ony about 20 kilometers from corner to corner.

DayZ becoming the game I like....

It isn't all that cold yet. Based on the tree foliage and the ponds (namely, the fact that there is still algae growing in them) , it is still "only" early Autumn, mid-Autumn at the latest, AKA late September, early October. Therefore, during a sunny day, it should be between 60 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, add some wind or some clouds and it could drop down to 40s/30s. During the night, it could get chilly, but not dangerously so unless you were under-dressed or lacked a fire or good shelter.

    A realistic look at firearms

Uh. Are you forgetting that it has been 20 years since the Soviet Union collapsed, and there is (er, was) every evidence of certain freedoms (namely, free travel) and flourishing Capitalism in the region Chernarus TOTALLY had its own firearms manufacturer, which supplied arms and presumably, ammunition, for the civilian population: Chernarusk Zbrojovka, which is currently represented by the CR527 "brush gun" carbine and the CR75 automatic pistol. The CR75 automatic also entered production in 1975, which suggests that Chernarus was relatively self-sufficient when it came to firearms, even back in the "Good? Old Days" of Soviet Communism. Based on this, the "local" (that is, firearms used by the Chernarus Defense Force) military weapons were probably produced locally, and in fact the local Communist rebels (Chedaki or ChDKZ, of which we find their beret in-game) is known for using either captured Governmental arms (AKA produced locally), or arms shipped from the Russian Federation. http://dayz.gamepedia.com/CR527_Carbine http://dayz.gamepedia.com/CR75 http://chernarussia.wikia.com/wiki/CHDZ There is nothing to suggest that civilian ownership of firearms was illegal before the "zombie apocalypse", and, considering how South Zagoria (the region of Chernarus we play in) is overwhelmingly rural and agriculture-based, it most likely would be the exact opposite. The most common firearms I expect to see in Chernarus are (almost overwhelmingly) shotguns + bolt-action hunting rifles (primarily in the countryside), and automatic handguns (primarily in the cities), with automatic military armament being (exceptionally rarely) found at checkpoints, or in ChDKZ camps and stockpiles in the wilderness (especially the northern wilderness, along the Russian border).

    This is a survival game

YES PvP for a reason, not "PvP to PvP", is what I have wanted to see for a while.

Baseball bat, make it deadlier, by yourself!

Or, do something like this. Wouldn't weaken the integrity of the bat, allows you to do some nasty slashing work while maintaining the bat's ability to smash, etc Only thing I would do differently is leave the "top" of the bat free of blades, so you could use it to thrust and knock back opponents. That.....actually looks like something I would make. Not as practical/multipurpose as merely carrying around a hatchet, but if you've got razor blades, some glue, and a baseball bat (all of which would be rather common in real life), I see no real reason not to do something like that.
  10. Whyherro123

Baseball bat, make it deadlier, by yourself!

If the nails were rusted/took a nail to the head/infected blood, yes, it would kill the victim eventually. EVENTUALLY. Which I am sure would be of great relief to you as you get beaten to death via adrenaline-fueled berserk fury. As for "the bat hanging from your arm impairing you a tad", yes, it will. But only a little. And guess what? Now you have no weapon, and the victim is pissed off and out for blood. Adrenaline is a HELL of a chemical. It lets human beings run around killing others while missing limbs due to them being blown off. A couple of nails spiked into the meaty part of the arm or the outside of the thigh aren't going to be slowing down someone all that much, especially if they are already pumped and "ready to go".
  11. Whyherro123

Baseball bat, make it deadlier, by yourself!

Stop getting weapon ideas from movies. In reality, a "bat with nails in it" would be a particularly shitty weapon, and the bat by itself is more effective by far. The nails wouldn't cause all that much damage (either to the flesh itself or by causing bleeding), and actually might just make the "nail-bat" get stuck to the victim due to the suction of blood capillaries. Meanwhile, as you try to wrench the nail-bat back so you can use it, the victim (REALLY pissed off, by the way), gets "inside" the arc-of-swing of the bat, and beats you to death. Although, I agree, getting whacked in the ribs by a baseball bat should cause a LOT more damage. Hell, getting into melee combat with ANYTHING should be a lot more frightening than it already is.

Armored, silent, ninja, stealth zombies + no loot = win?I

Poor baby! What was the average "lifespan" of freshspawns in the early days of the mod? Half an hour? I agree, foraging for wild edibles should be made more "accessible", in the sense that the plant is automatically gathered when the action is taken. Being able to see apples bobbing in the breeze on a tree, and failing to find one for the 5th time is just stupid. However, you should need to eat a varied diet in order to get "energized", and eating a steady diet of apples and canned food will keep you "alive", but eventually nutritional deficiencies will set it, and you will die from sickness due to a compromised immune system. So, you eat apples to fill your stomach, then forage for some "yard weeds" for Vitamin C, eat some cattail tubers for starch, dry some berries to make pemmican, make a poultice from plantain leaves to stop bleeding, etc etc etc
  13. Whyherro123

    Red or Blue Berries

Some of the survival-related decisions the devs make are ...... questionable, to someone with wilderness survival training.

    Pistol Crossbow

    1) The "zombies" in Day Z are not "zombies" in the classical sense: they are not reanimated rotting corpses, but living people infected with some unknown Prion disease. As such, their skulls are not rotting Human bone is actually rather tough, capable of turning aside and chipping metal blades. 2) 10 meters is a little over 30 feet, mate. Accuracy is very important when you are trying to hit something that, at that distance, will be very small and difficult to hit, not to mention round, and therefore, capable of deflecting glancing blows.. Think about this: at 100 (~330 feet) an average sized human being will appear to be about the size of an American "dime" coin. Also note, the "poundage" of a crossbow is in actuality less than that of a "regular" bow, due to the shorter power stroke (the distance the string travels before the arrow is released). The "weights" aren't directly comparable, but I've read that an 100lb full-sized crossbow is equivalent in force to a 40-45lb bow, which is the absolute minimum weight suggested for hunting large game (which humans could technically count as). In Massachusetts (where I am from), the minimum required draw (although higher draws are officially recommended, to ensure a quick, merciful death for the animal), is 45lbs for a recurve/compound bow, and 125lbs for a crossbow, and you can only use a crossbow if you are disabled and cannot use a regular bow.
  15. Whyherro123

    Pistol Crossbow

A pistol crossbow probably lacks the power and tip geometry to punch through a human skull. (NOTE: it would still hurt like a motherfucker) And, even if it punch through, unless the bolt has a broadhead, all it will do it put a little hole into the brain, which will not kill the target right away. Arrows and related projectiles kill by blood loss primarily, while bullets (due to the forces involved" often liquefy the flesh it passes through, as well as leaving a significant wound channel. If I had my way, headshots wouldn't be an "instant kill", all they would do is instantly knock you out while you bleed to death. Unless you annihilate the head (which a shot from a .22LR is not going to do), even a headshot in real life is not immediately lethal. And, how are you going to be crafting these bolts? Sticks? Do you know how to straighten sticks? If you don't you are going to have zero accuracy. Use wooden dowels? DO you know how to balance a projectile with such a light shaft? ETC ETC ETC. There is a reason arrows and bolts were made by professionals for as long as bows and crossbows have been used as weapons Crafting accurate projectiles is harder than the game makes it seem.

    Soviet Mortar

"Large scale clan combat" in this case means "multiple squads of infantry, maybe with some LMGS and trucks for support and transport if the group is well-supplied", not "a mortar section raining death on Berezino"
  17. In real life, supressors often don't make firearms all that much quieter, they just make it so the report of the shot is harder to place direction and distance for. Compare: "there is a guy with a rifle firing from that building over there, top floor, last window on the right!" -vs- "alright, we just got shot at. Everyone fan out into cover, and keep your eyes and ears open."
  18. Whyherro123

    starvation and dehydration ridiculously unrealistic

It would also make the distances we travel make much more "sense" with regards to in-game time. With a 2 hour day/night cycle, now it isn't taking you an hour to loot Elektro and move the 7 kilometers to Cherno, it would instead take a day and a half of in-game time. MUCH more realistic

Why can't we eat infected humans?

I've NEVER seen "3 weeks accepted by a lot of the community". If anything, most of the "older" member of the community suggest it has been longer, and collectively decided that "we" (the forumgoers) couldn't really tell, and would have to wait on some word from the devs. NOTE: animal meats are almost universally disinfected via ammonia sprays and injections before packaging. They are also injected with antibiotics to fight off the diseases they get from living in such conditions. Not even TOUCHING the fact that most (not saying that it doesn't happen, or isn't possible) cross-species disease transmission is iffy at best.
  20. Whyherro123

Why can't we eat infected humans?

The phrase "Prion disease" is a misnomer, because Prions are mis-folded proteins and as such, a "prion disease", like Kuru and the in-game "store-brand" version of Kuru, "brain fever", is not really a disease at all. They can't be treated with antibiotics or retrovirals. There is currently no cure, but some work with antibodies and protein chains "seems promising" (read:conclusive results are a long way off. Also, since prions are mis-folded protiens, cooking does nothing to remove the chance of transmission. Natives of New Guinea developed Kuru after eating the cooked bodies of dead relatives in ritual cannibalism.
  21. Whyherro123

Why can't we eat infected humans?

Tell me, where did you get the idea that it has only been three weeks? Because, while some evidence points to it being only a couple of days, there is other evidence that suggests it has been MONTHS since society collapsed.
  22. Whyherro123

Why can't we eat infected humans?

I attribute the current EXPLOSION of cannibalism in-game to the fact that eating human meat currently only gives you food poisoning, if that. There is literally NO DOWNSIDE to eating another person, when there should be. Eat someone, "get the Kuru", and mark yourself as untrustworthy to literally every other player. Or, get some NASTY intestinal parasites, at the very least.

THIS. It still astounds me that people expect to find medical equipment in hospitals, food in grocery stores, and so and and so forth.
  24. Whyherro123

Why can't we eat infected humans?

THEY.HAVE.OTHER.DISEASES.AS.WELL. Hepatitis A, Cholera, various infected wounds, covered in their own diarrhea-soaked clothing, with blood seeping from their facial orifices. Etc etc etc

    Soviet Mortar

Do you, the survivor (not you the player" have a working knowledge of trigonometry? Ballistics? How much propellant at such an angle will direct the shell where you want it to go? Or how the wind 500 meters up will affect the shell? Because this is how a mortar is actually used, at least in ARMA For a game that you might not know where your next meal is coming from, heavy weapons such as this is extraneous at best, and in my opinion, completely unnecessary.
