So we can't drink from water wells?

No, they would have private wells. With pumps that are powered via electricity. Chernarus was not a 3rd-world country, believe it or not. You see computers, personal cars, flush toilets and such all around. The wells we see in-game are the "old-timey" hand-pump things you see tourists taking pictures of. Not something everyone crowds around to get their drinking water.

    Bikes Confirmed = New Goal

Wuss. I am guessing you bring an air-mattress as well? Might as well stay in a hotel in town. Here in the Boy Scouts, we call that "truck/trailer camping", usually regarded with the same level of derision as "Using lighter fluid as a firestarter", or "hey, I love me some me some Corona". You wouldn't believe what I can carry on my back. All the same things you can in a truck, plus I can go places motor-vehicles can't. Everyone should go backpacking at least once in their lifetime.

    The new crosshair...

You do realize that you are supposed to use the iron-sights, right? Get rid of the crosshair, please, and we won't have people running around hip-firing at people.

    The new crosshair...

That ..... sounds an awful lot like cheating, mate.

    Shotguns vs SMGs

Which is why you don't "half-ass" aim with the shotgun. Besides, with the current clusterfuck that is CQC, it is arguably both easier and more effective to do 'area denial" shots with a shotgun, than try to play catch-up with some guy zipping around

    Shotguns, every time
  7. Considering how the plant life and such looks like we are in the middle of autumn, having some "warmer clothing" actually makes sense, as it could (and would) get relatively cold, both at night and during the day (sometimes). In New England (which is VERY similar to Chernarus, in terrain, plant life, geography and latitude), in Autumn, it can range from "nice warm sunny day" to "holy fuck why did it get so cold!?" in a couple hours or so. Not even counting wind or weather

swords, smithing, furnace, melee and ragnar

This is why "just making a bow" is rather aggravating to me. In-game, all you need is a bit of string and a stick, and you have a weapon that could kill a person out to at least 50 meters. In real life, the "improvised shortbow" would suck massive balls. It wouldn't be able to fire arrows that far, that accurately, or with that much power. Bowmaking is an exact science, and actually requires some knowledge about physics, the wood involved, and quite a bit of time and work. It should be changed.

That knife or axe won't let you defend yourself at range, or kill a deer or person 30 yards away.

So I had an amazing idea for DayZ

Well, you can make it from seawater, by boiling down seawater until just the salt remains. However, I wouldn't do it where there were heavy amounts of pollutants released into the oceans (AKA Chernarus) You can also mine it. Remember: there was a reason salt was an expensive trade-good for most of human history, and most food-preservation involved smoking and drying. Getting salt in a reasonable amount usually involved quite a bit of work and time. Same thing with sugar.
  11. Whyherro123

So I had an amazing idea for DayZ

You don't need it , although it definitely makes things faster. You can also use anything that will hold in smoke, not necessarily a tarp or fabric. I've used deerskins (part of the tanning process is "smoking the hide", so I hit two birds with one stone), and even thick evergreen branches.
  12. Whyherro123

So I had an amazing idea for DayZ

Nope, you smoke meat once, for 24-49 hours (it depends on how thick you cut the meat, and what kinds of wood you use), and it effectively lasts indefinitely. The smoking creates a coating on the outside of the meat, protecting it from external bacteria, and it also removes all moisture from inside the meat, protecting it from internal bacteria.

So I had an amazing idea for DayZ

You... just need sticks. Sticks and a fire. If you are "surviving in the woods", you already have those. And building a tripod literally takes seconds. Plus, smoking can be done "in the background", as in, once you start, it doesn't take any effort to do. Salting, on the other hand, takes effort and a valuable trade good. You can have meat smoking while you sleep, while you cook, while you repair gear, while you do whatever. Compared to salting meat, where that is it: you are rubbing salt into meat for the next hour or so. Yeah, smoking takes a couple of days, but guess what: salting isn't instantaneous, either. Chances are, if you are "surviving in the woods", you won't have the amount of salt necessary to preserve meat via salting. If you do, your priorities are skewed.

swords, smithing, furnace, melee and ragnar

When the bullets run out (And they will. Everything that goes into a modern smokeless-powder cartridge (brass, primer, smokeless powder, bullet, etc) essentially requires a global trade network. Sure, you could use blackpowder, but that would only work with certain cartridge calibers, and primers would still be a problem), you are gonna want something that is effective. Arrows with metal or glass heads are effective. Spears made from springsteel are effective. All of the above (with the exception of the actual musket, but smiths did forge out musket barrels on an anvil. But they knew what they were doing) requires little more than a metal-working file and some time. Hell, you could make a reasonable musket with a length of reinforced metal pipe and a hot wire. I am planning on buying a blackpowder smoothbore muzzleloader (because I can make everything I need to shoot it at home, from powder to lead shot), but I still have a bow (that I made), as well as a spear (that I also made) Remember, this is the 21st Century, but in the case when you can't run down to the corner store to pick up more bullets (AKA Day Z. I would love it if the spawn-rate for ammunition of all kinds was severely cut back, or even stopped, just to see what would happen), you kind of want to have something for backup. Either a bayonet on your rifle, or a spear/bow/whatever-have-you that can kill things dead. "Be Prepared" is my personal motto.

So I had an amazing idea for DayZ

No, you wash the salt off. I'd rather smoke meat and vegetables, myself. Easier and less material-heavy. Hell, it even does itself! https://youtu.be/8AVBWGLt8_4

So we can't drink from water wells?

This, pretty much. In a survival situation, the #1 thing you need to be concerned about is water, after fire and shelter is taken care of. You can "live" ( for a rather shitty and painful definition of "live") for 3 weeks without food (and that is if you are limiting activity as much as possible. Running around with heavy gear and fighting cuts it down to a week) in a temperate environment. You can only last about 3 days without water. So, right now, there is FAR too much "potable" water available on the map. Literally every town has a water pump, and some even have more! This makes survival stupidly easy. Imagine what it would be like if there were only, like, 5 water-wells on the map. Clans would take control of those things like fresh hotcakes, and charge for usage. Other clans would try to take control of them. Independent players would either trade for safe drinking water, work out an agreement with the clans to sell water for them (Ala Water Merchants from Fallout), or boil/filter water from streams and ponds. The last is more labor-intensive than it sounds. For a single person, it isn't too bad, but for a group, it rapidly becomes a pain in the ass. Keeping a fire going to boil water is a bear at the best of times, requiring 24/7 wood gathering, and filtering water through a large enough filter requires time. And boiling/filtering water is NECESSARY, not only "recommended". If you drink from any water source, you should be at severe risk for getting some sort of illness, even if it is just "stomach upset" (aka diarrhea and vomiting, which is dangerous in a survival situation, especially if the only water you have is the water than got you sick.). IRL, I boil/filter ALL WATER I drink that doesn't come from a municipal tap, regardless of how clear it looks and how fast it moves. Boiling kills ALL organic contaminants (aka viruses and bacteria), while filtering removes physical and chemical particulates. Both together, while it takes some time and fuel expenditure, makes water 100% safe to drink, 100% of the time (unless you are drawing from an "alkaline well", which is blatantly obvious, and never going to occur in the terrain Day Z takes place in.)

There are players (I am one of them) who don't want to be able to do all the above things. At least, not right off the bat, with guaranteed success each time. I, for one, would LOVE to have a skill system, randomized each time you re-spawn, but apparently that is heresy to many other forumgoers.

Suggestions for weapon attachments and tactical clothing

For pure survival usage, I actually do not like "hydration bladders" all that much. Sure, they are handy, but you can carry the same amount of water in canteens or bottles, which in and of themselves are more useful than a plastic hydration bladder. I prefer metal, because you can literally just throw one on some embers to boil drinking water (for teas, medical purposes, or to cook food), but you can even boil water in a plastic bottle if you are careful about it. Can't do that with a hydration bladder. Give me the "more useful" piece of equipment every time.

Should DayZ Be In The Armaverse?

Note that those bags in the above post do not mean "radioactivity". Instead, the have the symbol for "biohazard". This usually means medical waste, or, in the case of the game, human body wastes/parts/what-have-you that are infected with the "disease".

    CHARACTER LOST

I found it funny. You are literally pleading to developers, and to the community at large, how you want to keep your "uber-7331" stuff. Weeping on the forums about how you don't want your gear reset is literally the epitome of pathetic. Get reset, get killed, you are going to lose your gear 10,000 times before the game reaches 1.00-state. Again, the #1 RULE OF DAY Z: Don't get attached to your gear. I can't even. I am not sure if I should laugh, or feel sorry for you. Losing virtual pieces of equipment in a videogame, to resets that are required for the game to progress? Lord above....... 1st World Problems.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Rule #1 of Day Z: don't get attached to your gear.
  22. Same here, I never smeared any poop around when I was a teenager. I definitely was a shithead, but I kept my fecal matter to myself.
  23. 1) It is not a whole country, it is a specific region of a country, specifically, a poor, rural, and rather underdeveloped region of a country. We play DayZ in the region of "South Zagoria", which is part of the larger country of "Chernarus". Whenever you see someone on the forums refer to the in-game world as "Chernarus", they are either 1) incorrect, or 2) taking a shortcut, as "Chernarus" is faster to type than 'South Zagoria". 2) There are only 5-6 major (meaning: paved multilane roads that could handle major vehicle traffic) roads leading out of South Zagoria. It would be extremely easy for the CDF to block these off and prevent an exodus. And, again, there is zero (zip, zilch, none whatsoever, etc) indication that there was an evacuation of South Zagoria, either officially or unofficially. I am basing all of my "estimates about lore" on what we can see in-game. I suggest you do so as well. 3) Again, that is not how a quarantine works. You don't let people pass through just because they are uninfected right now. Asides from the "zombie disease", the quarantine would also be trying to prevent the spread of other communicable diseases. Allowing for fluid movement of uninfected civilians would allow those other diseases to spread, which in turn would allow the "zombie disease" an inroad into fresh populations. Not good. Also, it would most definitely not be considered genocide to enforce quarantine on a civilian population. It would be considered genocide if , you know .... the military was actually committing genocide : the systemic elimination of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. Which, based upon information gleaned from in-game, wasn't likely. The mass-graves we find around the map? Infected that were euthanized, or those that died and the infected remains disposed of in the proper manner. Notice how the mass-graves are found primarily around military bases, which would also house governmental/medical workers responsible for treating and tracking the disease. We have (had?) a quarantine on Liberia and East Africa to stop/slow the spread of Ebola, and in those locales infected bodies were disposed of in mass graves and by burning. 4) There probably weren't that many personal vehicles and such in South Zagoria. The region is notably poor, underdeveloped, and under-industrialized. Most of the freight was likely carried via train (as is the case in many rural nations lacking a developed road system). And, no, I am willing to bet there weren't all that many protests/riots in the face of martial law. They gather, get ordered to disperse, refuse, and get dispersed via tear gas, beatings, and arrests. And that was if the Chernarus Defense Force was feeling particularly nice about it. If they wanted to ensure people didn't riot/gather again, they simply would shoot the protesters. "Martial Law" isn't "increased police presence, with some Army guys walking around", it is "You lose ALL RIGHTS until the situation is over". The CDF is attempting to maintain a quarantine of a lethal disease, all in a region that was literally undergoing civil war a few years ago (AKA ARMA II). They are probably just going to execute any troublemakers, from looters, militamen, and rioters. The CDF wouldn't really catch any international "flak" for this, either, as generally if martial law is declared, the situation is dire enough to warrant the extrajudicial executions being overlooked. 6) Again, zero indication of this. South Zagoria was heavily militarized as a result of the ARMA II -era civil war, with military bases strategically placed around the map. Mobilizing some mechanized infantry (which is why we see Humvees and BMP's everywhere) would only take a couple of hours (MINUTES, really, with how small the map is and how the military bases are located. South Zagoria could be isolated in a very short time, realistically speaking. A helicopter could be used to cover those regions (forests, mountains, etc) where mechanized infantry would have trouble patrolling. 7) None of the airfields on the map are large enough for civilian airliners, with the exception of the NWAF, which is explicitly military in nature. And still, a quarantine would mean "NOBODY LEAVES", which means any civilian airplanes (again, which would overwhelmingly likely be small craft), would be shot out of the sky, and a "no-fly zone" would be enacted over South Zagorian airspace. That airliner that crashed into the International Hotel? Shot down by military forces for trespassing into the "no-fly zone". *** the current number of infected is not a good thing to base WMG-ing off of. The number of infected is still extremely low, as a result of engine limitations, and the number was actually decreased further in order to test server-performance-related things. Same thing with the number of "survivors", which will gradually increase per-server as the engine and such gets improved to handle more. Plus, South Zagoria is again, underdeveloped, poor, and overwhelmingly rural. Case in point: my previous hometown (Wareham, MA) is half the size, landwise, of South Zagoria, and it has 20,000 people living in it, with larger "towns" (developed areas). I am willing to bet South Zagoria didn't have that many. "5000" (which is a figure the devs are shooting for) infected might be the majority of the population.

    Bigger Forests please?

There are plenty of "wilderness" areas on the map. It is just that nobody actually goes to them. Untouched fields, forests, hills, anything that isn't developed is a "wilderness area". Take away the fields that surround towns and roads, and you still have a significant number of square kilometers of wilderness. Everyone runs to the edges of the map. Don't do that. There are plenty of forests I've gotten lost in on the map. Take a walk through the birch forests along the northern edge, or the wooden mountains of the west. Or, brave the forbidding dells of the Black Forest, which, including the mountain range to the south, give you a rough 1/3-1/4 of the map, where I have personally spent two weeks on a full-pop public server, and not seen a soul.
  25. 1) It has most emphatically not been several years after the collapse of society. In fact, since gasoline and certain medications are still viable, it has been less than two years since society collapsed. (gasoline, even when stored properly and with a stabilizer added, is only viable for two years after processing). We don't know exactly how long it has been, but the general consensus is generally a couple of months. Some people even think it has only been a couple of weeks. The fact that (up till several patches ago) we had fresh tropical fruit floating around suggests that it hasn't been that long since 1) electricity (for refrigeration) and 2) international trade were up and running. 2) There is no indication that people left at all. Asides from car crashes in the streets, which happen on a daily basis even without the collapse of society. I certainly wouldn't throw things around for the hell of it, in the case of an evacuation, instead try to take everything I need as neatly (AKA quickly, as opposed to throwing things around) and quietly as I could. 3) Who says there was an evacuation? In fact, evacuating an infected area is a gigantic no-no when it comes to the treatment of an epidemic. That is how the disease gets transmitted. You want to quarantine the infected and possibly-infected away from other population centers. This is what all the road-blocks, checkpoints, and military camps in certain cities were overwhelmingly likely for. 4) See above. You don't mix "healthy" populations with possible transmission vectors. South Zagoria was overwhelmingly likely placed under martial law, instead of evacuating possibly-infected members of the population. This is why you see military vehicles in cities, and convoys near the border of the map. No-one goes in (except for military/governmental personnel), no-one goes out. This is why things weren't cleaned up. When the military is trying (and failing) to maintain law and order, AS WELL as search out "infected" people, they don't really have time to clean the streets of wrecked vehicles and the like. Curfews and "movement restrictions" (being under quarantine would likely make it illegal to leave the city/town you are in) would prevent civilian cleanups, or at the least make them impractical. 5) Possible, but only really likely when the SHTF. Martial law makes protesting and riots .... impractical. When the military was overwhelmed via Chedaki rebels (who would LOVE for the confusion of a disease outbreak), pissed-off citizen militias, and "infected outbreaks, then, sure, there could be riots. Otherwise, a guy inside an APC tends to scoff at your epithets, thrown rocks, and even small-arms. 6) Why? Tying into the "quarantine" theme, which again, is the more overwhelmingly likely form of action, all airstrips would be sealed off and civilian access prevented. Failing that, an airstrike (take a look at the ruins at Balota and the NWAF next time you go up there) would prevent civilian air travel out of the quarantine zone. Same thing with the heli-crashes. They contain various "Special Forces" pieces of equipment from the US/NATO armies, as well as the Russian Federation. They also recently (AKA why they are on fire/still smoking when you come across them) crashed. All of this means that outside nations are maintaining the quarantine after the Chernarus Defense Force failed to upkeep it. Every so often, they fly a Spec Ops team over the countryside, keeping an eye out for 'infected" movements, as well as the movements of the surviving uninfected population. Every so often, one of these crashes, or is shot down by the surviving population. *** the "zombies" in-game are not "undead". They are people infected with a disease, which various sources name as a "prion disease", AKA Kuru (which used to be in-game, BTW). Therefore, they need (and most likely do search for, "off-screen") food, water and shelter. The fact that we still have "infected" roaming around with relatively-warm-weather clothing on suggests that a winter hasn't come through to kill them all via exposure yet. The "zombies are actually living diseased people" thing comes straight from the developers, so please don't argue it.
