So, with the beginning stages of Agriculture in Experimental .50 right now, what would you like to see with regards to this topic as the concept further evolves? Plant? Methods? Fertilization? I, for one, would like to see the Holy Trifecta (literally) of Native American agriculture: Corn, Beans, and Pumpkins. They support each other, and add nitrogen to the soil as well. Couple those crops with potatoes (a hardy and easy-to-grow crop, as well), and you have all the nutrients you really need, alongside an "easy-to-access" energy source in the form of starch. The corn can be made into ethanol, to power diesel engines, fuel lamps and stoves, clean water, disinfect wounds and medical equipment, and..well, drink. The beans provide protein, as well as nitrogenize the soil, and the pumpkins add nutrients to the soil, as well as providing Vitamin A and a high level of food energy as well. Couple all this with apples (found growing EVERYWHERE in Chernarus), and milk and meat from domesticated animals (goats, pigs mainly. Cows require too much food to be viable), and you are all set. The best part of Native American-style agriculture is that it really requires no advanced machinery, only a hoe and some elbow grease. If you haven't even played the goddamn game yet, how could you possible formulate an opinion on the "validity" of the zombie apocalypse? Get some hours under your belt, experience the world, then come back and vent. Your entire opinion, and all that nice text, is essentially invalidated until you do so. Considering how you label the Standalone zombies as "slow zombie mopes:, when they are specifically not so, I automatically consider next-to-everything you say rather, well, "suspiciously", for lack of a better word. Again, get some experience first. 1) The "infected" in Day Z are most emphatically not "slow zombie mopes". Have you played the game at all? If you have, you would know that the "infected" SPRINT AT YOU, BALLS OUT, to the point where if they are within 30 meters or so, and you aren't paying the utmost attention, you essentially have to "spray n' pray" with an automatic in order to kill them before they smack you around. And they usually manage to get in a few whacks. 2) "Kill hundreds of thousands of zeds". Sure thing, pal. It might not be a big thing to you, playing a game and all, but look at it from the survivors perspective, both our own, and those who came before. These "infected" were once your neighbors, that guy down the street you went to the pub with, co-workers, friends, your goddamned family members. Hell, none of the cities/towns in South Zagoria are all that big, I see no real reason as to why, in a town like Svetlojarsk, a resident couldn't somehow know 95% of the people that lived there. And now you have to kill them. Yes, as they come at you, screaming for blood, but you still have to kill them. That..... probably isn't something the in-game people could just shrug off like changing a tire. The in-game survivors most likely have a "healthy", well-developed case of PTSD, if not other neuroses (depression, anxiety, etc), as a result of having to murder 99% of their former acquaintances. 3) Remember: South Zagoria literally just underwent Civil War (Day Z takes place right after the ARMA II campaign), with Communist militas hiding out on every mountaintop, being all "insurgent-y" and such. With the Quarantine, and accompanying restriction of law and order to the cities, the militias probably jumped right back into action. Hell, they could have blamed the government for the outbreak! Said militia was more than capable of waging all-out war against the CDF, IIRC. So, you've got: 1) quarantine, preventing you from leaving your city, or even your house past a certain hour (ensures you get exposed to both "THE infection", as well as other secondary communicable diseases that proliferate between people in close proximity) 2) loss of power and related services (medical, police), with all the accompanying issues (cant keep food cold, nor medication, nor pump water) 3) fucking WAR 4) outbreak of other diseases, as a result of poor sanitation, starvation, lack of clean drinking water, leaving many otherwise-"healthy" members of the population at deaths door. Nobody said that the "reanimation" of the infected only took a week. Shit, for all we know, it could be weeks, or months! And, if one person "reanimates" in Svetlojarsk, some poor bastard down in Cherno isn't going to find out until it is too late. Remember: no electricity, no Internet, no phones, nothing. So, by the time Freddy Farmer outside Cherno finds out his sick Aunt is going to come chewing on his jugular, there is a wave of death sweeping down from Svetlo.

I hold the opinion that South Zagoria (the region of Chernarus we play in), is in fact under quarantine, and we are prevented from leaving by NATO+UN+RU armed forces (let me explain that in a minute). The rest of the world is fine, or "okay enough" to allow for regular Special Forces patrols via helicopter into the QZ. Take a look at the map. There are only a couple of major roads that lead in/out of South Zagoria. It would be trivial for a military force to either 1) block off these points (which, if you notice in-game, there are several military roadblocks and checkpoints scattered around the map), or 2) say "whoever crosses this line gets shot". Evidently, the CDF failed to contain the disease. Meanwhile, as part of the quarantine, NATO, UN, and RU Special Forces regularily fly overhead in helicopters, tracking the progress of the disease, as well as the condition/location of any survivors. Every once in a while, they crash ("Hellish Copter" is a trope for a reason), or get shot down by some survivors. This is why whenever you stumble across a crashed helicopter, it is smoking. If it was weeks/months after the crash, would it still be smouldering? NOTE: this doesn't mean it couldn't be weeks/months after the TSC. And, in the progress of a "real" pandemic, even one with an absurdly high fatality rate, there is ALWAYS people that don't get infected, even without being immune. Either due to isolation (eminently possible in the smaller villages in SZ), due dilligence in the wearing of PPE, or just sheer dumb luck, there are ALWAYS survivors, usually of a much higher number than you think, like 30%-60% of the "previous" population (HINT: most real-world diseases aren't absurdly lethal, or, if they are, they are 1) not easily transmissible, or 2) realllly fucking obvious) Now, most of these survivors die eventually due to what is often termed the "Secondary Kill", that is, outbreaks of diseases unrelated to the "main one", but instead related to lack of sanitation, malnourishment-related immune system depression, the drinking of "bad water", or just from exposure or sheer accidents. Remember, in a world without advanced medical care, a cut on the hand is a SERIOUS FUCKING PROBLEM. And, those going into the larger towns/cities for medical supplies, food, or even booze and smokes could get killed from the disease (remember, they aren't immune, just not exposed yet), yet more accidents, the infected, or bandits. Meanwhile, they are using up food, swallowing down meds, burning up gasoline, and shooting up bullets. Same thing with the "infected", before they succumb to the disease and "reanimate" (for lack of a better term, as they are still living, breathing human beings). Even if the disease progresses REALLY FAST, like a couple of days, in those days, they will still be eating food, using meds (probably pretty quickly), etc etc. Not counting the Samaritans that stay around and help them in their final days (family, religious orgs, NGOs, etc (There are ALWAYS people helping during a disease, especially family). It isn't like God flicked some switch, and 100,000 people died in the blink of an eye. It probably took MONTHS for South Zagoria to end up like it is, and in those months, the survivors lived like kings off the carcass of the Old World (look what happened during the Black Death. Society SHAT THE BED, with fuckhueg parties, orgies, robberies, near-open warfare, etc etc etc). We are the poor dumb-fucks that are left. We are the last.

I am willing to bet that most of your conversations go somewhat like this: You: Hey, I'm gonna have to ask you to put your gun down Them: Sure, so long as you do as well You: Not gonna happen Them: Then why the hell should I trust you?! You: CAUZ IZ A HEWO Your strategy is stupid. Trust is a two-way street, and to get a little, you have to give a little. Don't have them put their gun away, just have them lower it. Do the same. Don't meet them anywhere you have a clear advantage, or could possible get an advantage over them (overwatch, "box them in" in an alleyway or side-street, surround them with mates, etc) Meet someone on "equal terms", and they are much more likely (not 100%) to respond favorably. Show a clear advantage, or "impress your power" (which is EXACTLY what you are doing, by refusing to out your firearm away, while DEMANDING they put theirs away), and you are 1000000% more likely to get a negative, sullen, or outright hostile response. And, if I may ask, what exactly do you do to "help" people? Are you a medic? Are you known on the forums for so? If not , then I (until proven otherwise), highly doubt you do as you claim. Hell, I talked to a guy on the forums a couple of months ago who thought "being a hero" was leaving chemlights lit in a looted building! :D Point being: the criteria for "hero" is WAY higher than what many people think it is.

I do "like" PvP, but to me, PvP is more than just getting the closest firearm and shooting people till you run out of bullets. Competing for resources is PvP Stalking someone through a town, without them knowing, is PvP Trading some goods is PvP One of the major issues with this game is the fact that there is LITERALLY NOTHING to do, other than kill people. Grow plants? Meh, they are done in 20 minutes. I don't need to log in over the course of a week, weeding and chasing away animals. Food? You can literally trip over canned food, and animals are literally stumblefuck-level stupid, to the point where you can get within 20 meters of one. Safe drinking water? Pshh, in experimental, they added more wells to towns. Temperature? No need to worry, every day is sunny and warm. Guns and bullets? GUNS FOR THE GUN GOD, BULLETS FOR THE BULLET THRONE. Would having more difficult PvE mechanics make PvP go away? Of fucking course not, look at ARK. But, it would make PvP more meaningful. You fight for things, not for no reason at all. I have always said that my "perfect" day z would be one where things just straight up don't respawn. Bullets, medical supplies, canned food. And, what is there would degrade over time. Bullets get less effective, and cause misfires. Medicines straight up don't work. Food goes bad (botulism, anyone?) Yes. there would be A LOT of stuff at the "beginning", but as they get used up, you either 1) find alternate sources for things, or 2) bluff. Lie like your life depends on it. More "hold ups" with empty/nearly empty weapons, instead of just blasting everything. More melee combat, or skirmishing, as opposed to standing in the street blazing rounds at each other. More trading, more of a "community", instead of people hopping onto random servers 50 times per day, and never learning anyones name.

In an actual survival situation, if I found clothing, and it was too small for me, I would wear it anyways, or make some use from it. "Man, I am rather cold, but this jacket is a little tight....fuck it, I'll wear it anyways"! The only thing that I need to be the right size are shoes. Everything else would be worn, used as insulation, or ripped up for raw materials.

What many people don't realize is that, in actuality, pistols were designed to be used one-handed. They were originally cavalry weapons, used to supplement the saber, and it is entirely possible to fire a pistol accurately one-handed (it is just that 99.9% of combat today doesn't involve a fuckhuge sword, and so it is more "effective" to use a pistol two-handed). However, 1) whenever you see a "Western gunslinger" with two pistols on their belt, it wasn't so they could dual-wield the banditos into a shallow grave. Instead, it was to allow for more firing before a reload, aka "shoot all the bullets from one gun, then draw the other and shoot those", not "shoot bother guns at the same time". With a magazine-fed handgun, this is unnecessary. 2) Our eyes focus onto a single point. Humans cannot look in two directions with different eyes, so how do you expect to aim down the sights of two different handguns?

-Reply to the above: Actually, I would not want to be anywhere near a town, or, for that matter, a road. If there is a path to the building you are reinforcing, eventually, someone will follow the path. Just through sheer statistical probability. The fact that there is a viable road/path leading somewhere suggests that there is something at the end, even in the most isolated of dirt roads. People don't just build "roads to nowhere", after all. All it takes is somebody to think "Gee, I wonder what is down that dirt road?", and all of your hard work is worth jack shit. You go down the isolated dirt road, then go off into the woods for a couple hundred meters. You still can be found, of course, but the chances are MUCH lower than if you just stayed in that house at the end of the road. I can't even understand why people would want to barricade a building in the middle of town. And, again: if it takes a realistic amount of time, materials, and effort to build structures and fortifications, you won't have Epoch-style concrete monstrosities, or H1Z1 -"chickenpox"-shacks everywhere. An Epoch-style concrete sniper tower would have to be made up of 1000+ bags of concrete, countless pieces of rebar reinforcement, hundreds of board-feet of lumber, countless numbers of nails, etc, and would have to be built in stages over WEEKS, and in between each stage, has to be allowed to "cure" (where the concrete dries) for a while, which is not insignificant. Who the hell would build that? Give me a shack in the woods, or an A-frame. It happened in Epoch because basebuilding in Epoch was trivial. You could effectively carry entire walls and pieces of buildings in your inventory, and "building" them was drag-and-click. If they took even a slightly-realistic amount of time and materials, nobody would be doing it. That is what I am proposing: shelterbuilding takes a realistic amount of time, effort, and materials. A 10X10 shack made from barn-board would take an hour or two. A concrete pillbox would take a week at best.

Why not? If someone wants to waste the time, effort, and materials to try and build a "sniper post" overlooking Cherno, all the power to them. EVERYONE and their mother will be able to see them, and what you can see, you can kill..... As for the "roadblock" idea, that is both 1) a great idea, and 2) your own fault if you get trapped by it. It isn't like there is only one road between Cherno and Elektro, and the space between them is pretty flat. If you see what looks like a roadblock, back up and find a different way. Problem solved. In H1Z1, you can build a "basic" shack with only a few materials, like 10 or so boards, some nails, etc, and 30 seconds of work. As such, you see them literally covering hills like Chicken Pox http://h1z1.gamepedia.com/Small_Shack Plus, if you don't have the passcode, the thing is next-to invincible. Not how it should be. Something like that shack in the above link should take quite a bit of lumber, quite a number of nails, and quite some time to make. And, anyone with a prybar or an axe could hack their way in in a couple of minutes. Easy. Just make "buildings and fortifications" take an appropriate amount of time and materials to build, and make sure they follow "real-world" physics. If something (a wall, a floor, a ceiling, etc) isn't supported, it will collapse. Boom, no "sky-bases" ala Epoch. If something takes even a modicum of effort, materials, and time to build, chances are players won't do it. The whole reason H1Z1 has such a problem with bases FUCKING EVERYWHERE is because they take effectively-no materials and effectively-zero time to make.

I have no issues with players building their own bases from boards and such, it just has to make "sense", both with the materials needed, and in the time it takes. No "6 boards for an insta-placed wall". A 10 foot wall, double-sided (for insulation), would probably take me an hour and 40-50 boards. A shack, made from 4 of these walls, with a hole cut (and supported) for an entryway, would probably take at least 5 hours. Not including actually getting the materials and hauling them to the build site.

No, actually, it does the exact opposite. When you drink alcohol, and when you get drunk, what happens is the alcohol makes your blood vessels dilate, which moves blood closer to the skin, making you feel warmer (note: this is why drunk people have a tendency to remove clothing. That, and lowered inhibitions) However, you aren't actually getting warmer, you just feel warmer. By moving blood closer to the skin, your body actually gives off heat faster to the outside environment. This lowers your core temperature, and coupled with the removal of clothing, cold external temperature, being wet, etc, can lead to severe hypothermia pretty quickly. Yeah .... alcohol severely dehydrates you, and is probably one of the LAST things you should be drinking in a survival situation. However, you are in luck! That "factory" building, up by Vybor? What You do realize that males and females have literally the exact same major blood vessels (specifically, the femoral) in the crotch? And, that getting "injured" in the crotch hurts females JUST AS MUCH as it hurts males? Men won't bleed any more than females, nor will women be magically immune to crotch-related injuries.

Technically, everyone is "allergic" to beestings, in the sense that it causes a reaction in everybody stung. REALLY allergic people have the super-bad reactions that you mention, but again, technically, everyone is allergic to beestings to a minor extent. And, I still think it is a "cop-out" that, miraculously (/sarcasm), the only people we can play as are those who won the genetic lottery. Where are the people who survived living in the back-country, that essentially put themselves under quarantine so they wouldn't get exposed? Or, those who used proper protection (-snicker-), like face-masks, rebreathers, goggles and gloves, to prevent transmission? Remember: there are "only" a couple of methods of transmission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_(medicine)) -airborne -droplet -"fecal-oral" -sexual -oral -direct contact -vertical -Iatrogenic -Vector borne Now, we can safely assume that the "zombie disease" is a virus, not an "infection", because if it was, it could have been treated via application of "HOLY FUCK"-level antibiotics (yes, we have things like that. They essentially make you wish you were dead, but they are "strong enough" to wipe out any bacterium. They are only used in cases of disease-related MAD, as we don't want some bacteria becoming resistant to our "Hail Mary" drugs) Now, since we can see bags of hazardous biological waste in-game, we can safely assume that the "zombie disease" is probably transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, kinda like rabies. So, someone sick (they don't have to be showing symptoms) coughs, sneezes, or spits, and people inhaling the stuff or catching some in their mucus membranes will then be infected. Or, through direct transmission via cracks in the skin of the hands, from handling infected individuals or bodily fluids. All of those means of transmission can be easily prevented through the application of goggles, breathing mask, gloves, and a metric shit-ton of bleach. As well as a military curfew (which I believe is more than likely what happened. Society didn't collapse within a day) to prevent the possible spread of disease. People living in isolated towns could have easily remained safe from infection, and we could have therefore, played as "non-immunes". That would give us a rather good reason to wear the face-mask and gas-mask, wouldn't it, as well as adding a whole new level of paranoia and fear to the game. Now, obviously, we are the only people left alive in Chernarus, us "immunes". This still bears out, because even with a military curfew and quarantine of infected populations, eventually the shit must have hit the fan. Either the populace got too pissed off, or the CHEDAKI rose up again to stir the shit-pot. Either way, "law and order" broke down, and infected people were able to move around at will, spreading the sadness. However, this doesn't mean everyone not immune had to die. They could have bunkered up in the woods, killing anyone they see that isn't a member of their group......... sound familiar? Of course, we are all immune because the devs probably couldn't give a damn about the possible gameplay -AND- plot implications of allowing us to play as "non-immune" survivors.

Ah ... not exactly. You can make a self-bow from basically any type of wood that grows in a temperate forest, including pine. All you have to do is vary the "depth" and "width" of the limbs, and add things like "cable-backing", or just strap two weak bows together. Woods like Ash and Yew were popular because they were 1) the "best" available, and 2) easy to work, and easy to differentiate between the heartwood and sapwood. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable-backed_bow That bad boy is a "Penobscot" I made a self-bow out of a Birch sapling. The thing draws 60+ lbs at 10 inches, easy ( I can draw a 45lb no problem, I can't get this thing back to my usual nock-point, and have to use my nose instead!) I actually agree with you with regards to foraging from plants. It shouldn't be random; instead, you get access to the "inventory" of the plant, where you can choose between the "best" parts, all the way down to rotted bits. Whoever gets there first gets the best choice, so if you take a while, you get soft, slightly-squishy apples! This could apply from everything from apples and berries, to cattail and chicory/dandelion. I also agree with you with regards to agriculture. I like "a weeks-worth" of real time as well, with the added caveat that you also have to "check up" on your garden regularity: weed it, water the plants, chase away (or build a quick fence) animals, etc. I love me some "Three Sisters" (http://www.reneesgarden.com/articles/3sisters.html Add some potatoes, and you have all the nutrients you need) As well as large-game animal AI: hunting a deer should take a significant amount of time, from the spotting, to the stalking, to the final shot. Of course, with that investment of time, there should also be a commiserate reward: an average deer should provide enough meat, both lean and organs, to feed a single person for a week. Yes, food is everywhere, but it should take time and effort to forage for that food in the wild. In real life, most fighting was done in the Autumn, after the harvest and foraging-season was done with, because only then did the warriors have both 1)enough food, and 2) enough free-time, to actually fight. In Spring, Summer, and Winter, there was too many things to do, like planting, harvesting, and preparing food. Fishing should take time, and be almost mind-numbingly boring, when using a rod (in a real-life survival situation, I would set up a net, or a bunch of traps, instead), trapping small game should take time, and it actually should have a rather high failure rate ( I've set up 3 different snare lines, of a style more effective than the one we use in Day Z, 7 snares to a line, and caught 2 rabbits), and hunting large game should take a signifigant amount of time, as well as being significantly harder. There are several different edible plants that would be readily available (ESPECIALLY cattail. Gods own survival food, right there), but they require digging, getting wet, and fire. So, there would be a lot of food, but in order to get it, you would have to expend a lot of time and effort, something that part of the playerbase might not want. This is why there is canned food, for those mouthbreathers. There was a reason that Native Americans used many different methods of food procurement. They raised crops, hunted for large game, trapped small game, and foraged for wild plants and such.

UGH. That one is even worse! "here, let me just suck all these peaches/beans/soup right out the can, even though I am in a house with spoons and assorted bowls and plates. I could use them, like a normal human being ..... nah, let me just slurp them right out, like a fucking moron." At least Day Z has the excuse that we, as the players, are usually eating food in the woods, and lack direct access to silverware and such. in TLD, you can see bowls, plates and cups on the goddamn counters and in the sinks, yet you still lap up food like giant, mentally-deficient dog, in the same fashion as him licking his own balls. I just ..... -froths at mouth- hate ..... mouth noises.

Why, oh WHY, does every game with eating in it make it so your avatar apparently forgets how to fucking eat without slapping his lips around like some sort of imbecile? Seriously, the "eating noises" in every single sandbox-survival game I've ever played end up pissing me off. I certainly don't make so much noise eating in real life, and if someone I knew made those mouth-noises IRL, they would get a disgusted look at best, and a crack to the face at worst. I mean, goddamn, have some class! Apocalypse or not, there is no reason to be that imbecilic about your food! And, why do the devs think these are necessary? Do they think we someone won't understand that our characters are eating, without them slapping and slurping like some kind of idiot? /rant

Why, necessarily? What would make those handguns more common than the CR75?

As a nod to realism, what would be the most-likely sidearm for the Chernarus Defense Force and for the civilian Police forces? The locally-produced CR75. Therefore, that should be the most-common handgun found, with plenty of magazines and ammunition for it.
