Just some general things that would make the game better
Whyherro123 replied to thefriendlydutchman's topic in Suggestions
^ We have "Dike rats" in New Bedford (we have a Hurricane Dike around the city harbor, built of large rough stones by the Army Corps of Engineers in the '60s) that can easily reach over a foot in length, and that is just the body. I ..... wouldn't want to tangle with one of those monsters, at least not with a hand weapon. Give me a bow or a bullet any time. -
Just some general things that would make the game better
Whyherro123 replied to thefriendlydutchman's topic in Suggestions
1) Do the rabbits even have in-game models? I don't think they do. They just 'appear" when they get caught in a trap, which is fine by me. Shooting a rabbit with anything larger than a .22LR/ 12g birdshot shell is a waste of a bullet. Remember: in survival, you hunt large game and trap small game. 2) In cities, rats can get pretty large. I would also love to see pigeons and seagulls as well. Plentiful, stupid, and relatively easy to catch. Good eating, too, if you avoid the diseased ones (you find out if they are "healthy" or not during the skinning/dressing process) and BOIL THE SHIT OUT OF THEM. 3) By all estimates, it has been at least a couple of months since society shat the bed. There would be nothing left but bones 4) That isn't how gas canisters work 5) Agree, and I want to be able to hang players myself. Capture some bandits? Throw a rope over a tree-branch or a lightpost = no more bandits! 6) What does this statement mean? 7) Fuck, there needs to be far less ammunition in general. Plenty of guns, plenty of magazines, but much less ammunition. The game won't "grow into its own" until that happens. 8/9/10 ) yeah, agree 11) No, that is perfect. Go outside at night, build a fire, then stare at it for a second. Then, look away. You won't be able to see anything 12/13) meh, alright 14) cool 15/16) meh, no thanks -
A hand-powered pump well (which is the type we see in-game, at every "fountain" across the map"), will generally only lift water about 22 feet above sea level, according to this source. (http://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/how-to-dig-a-well-zmaz70jazgoe.aspx?PageId=2) That means that the water table in South Zagoria isn't going to be that deep underground (make sense, considering the majority of the terrain in South Zagoria is coastal floodplain.) The same hand-powered wells being found on top of mountains just means that the developers didn't think about it very much. The above method, posted by Baker, would be perfectly sufficient in "building your own well". I'd rather take the time and effort to sink a pipe into the water table than try to rely on rainstorms or dew to collect in a collector, or make daily water runs to the stream at the bottom of the hill (and get sniped). Having a reliable (and large) supply of water is the critical requirement of building any fortification. You could build an awesome wall, with flanking towers that cover 360 degrees, but if you don't have water inside, the first siege will lead to your destruction. As much as a feel like a hypocrite for saying this, Day Z is ultimately just a game, and we shouldn't need a real life structural engineering degree in order to dig a hole. The fact that there are hand-pumps on the top of 300+ meter tall mountains means the whole "water table" thing isn't exactly a big issue. Give us wells, sure, but make us have to treat the water before we drink it. Boom, balanced.

Should trucks spawn with glowplugs and batteries? Should guns be more rare?
Whyherro123 replied to Noctoras's topic in Suggestions
Nothing wrong with there being a decent amount, or even a lot, of firearms. Remember: South Zagoria underwent heavy civil war just before the "zombie disease" outbreak. What I have issue with is the amount of ammunition. Cut back ammunition spawns by 1/2, or even 2/3, and I would be happy. Then, you would have to actually be conservative with ammo, or even bluff and hold up enemies, as opposed to just blasting them outright. It isn't a survival game if you have 7 magazines and 200 rounds of loose ammunition. The second you stop being afraid about the future, it ceases to be survival. Of course, I also want the environment to be the major threat, as it should be in realistic survival, but what-have-you. -
Remember when one bullet killed you?
Whyherro123 replied to Grimey Rick's topic in General Discussion
I agree: PvP is pretty boring now that you know that you can tank a couple, or even a multitude, of shots, even center mass. I was shot at by an SKS the other day, and I was decidedly blase about getting to cover. For the above: yes, the plate carrier should "protect" you from bullets, to the effect where the bullets won't penetrate your body, but IMO, getting shot with a plate carrier should result in 1) the plates themselves being broken and useless and 2) you getting winded, knocked over, or even having ribs broken. Cover should be the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lines of defense, a plate carrier would be for those "oops moments, not so you can stand out in the open mag-dumping. Of course, all of this is coming from the guy that wants a much more advanced and punishing medical system. In my mind, that rag won't do anything to help with that bullet in your chest. You should, really, be doing almost everything in your power to prevent being injured in the first place, like ambushing, fighting guerrilla-style, or straight-up running away/avoiding the fight in the first place. -
Take a look at my response in this thread https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/227970-can-we-agree-this-is-feesable/page-6 on the last page, for my feelings on basebuildings and fortification

Whoever suggested making hard cider from all the apples around, you have my vote. Tasty, easy, and a good way to store sugar for the winter. http://www.gameofbrews.com/wildling-cider/ I would also love to see a wind turbine as "end-game" power generation. Diesel/ethanol generators work fine, but make noise and use fuel. A wind turbine would work next-to silently, and provide power so long as there is wind (which, if you build your base on top of a hill, there will be). Plus, a wind turbine can be easily (relatively speaking) made from scrap metal and bicycle gears. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_turbine
-
The in-game characters used to make much more noise when injured, moaning, groaning, complaining and such. The devs took all that out, to the detriment of the game in my opinion. However, I wouldn't be screaming in fear to every little thing, either, nor pain that isn't immediately disabling. Human beings have this chemical called "adrenaline", and it lets us do a hell of a lot, including effectively ignoring pain, broken bones, fear etc. It kicks in whenever you get afraid, get in a fight, or get injured. I wouldn't be making all that much noise until after a fight, when the adrenaline wears off, and I realize that I just broke all the fingers in my hand punching zombies in the head. As an aside, we really should get damaged when we punch things.

What do you think would make a good Dayz theme song?
Whyherro123 replied to Luftpancake's topic in Gallery
Or, the sound of wind moving between empty buildings -
Damn straight, except not just kinda stupid. More like : mind-bendingly, head-shakingly stumblefuck stupid "here is this survival game, yeah? With scarce supplies and where your continued survival is not guaranteed? Here's your fucking tank" .... And then a crewmember pops out and mans the MG on the turret. Or, more likely, the infantry supporting the tank picks you off the second you get out of cover.

1) Day Z takes place in a rather hilly locale, the only place where there would be fog is in the valleys and along the coast 2) the "zombies" in-game aren't actually zombies, but people infected with a disease. Plus, AFAIK, they don't actually bite you, nor eat you, in the standalone. They just beat you to death. 3) That is a renderer issue, not an actual decided-on mechanic. One thing I can add to this is that there should be a LOT more standing water in the cities, especially the coastal ones. Without electric pumps to keep the sewers working, both the water/sewer mains under the streets will overflow and collapse, and the marshes and streams will rapidly overflow their banks and flood nearby valleys. Of course, Day Z has severe issues with rendering water to begin with, so I am not expecting this anytime soon.

I literally cannot get over how they managed to misspell "horde" in that ARMA III video title........ "HORDE" NOT "HOARDE"

I figured you would only get the sleeping "buff" if you 1) "owned" the area and 2) do it over a period of time, like 8 hours or so of realtime. Sort of like an "anti-poopsocking" kind of thing. Some scumbag logging in and out of his tent won't get the buff, but he would if he logged out, then logged back in 8 hours later. The whole point of you getting a "buff" from "sleeping" in a special place (you wouldn't get it from just logging out), is multifold: 1) to encourage players to stay on the same server 2) to encourage "communities" to form (if your lean-to is located north of Svetlo, you will learn very quickly where other peoples bases are, and you will probably interact with them more if you have to move back to Svetlo to log out) and 3) to give the game a sense of permanence and immersion. Not including the fact that players wouldn't be staying in after they logged out ( I don't know if this was apparent in the OP or not) What sounds better? "so, new guy, this tent is where we store all the gear. After that, we all run for the nearest tree and log out" or "so, new guy, this tent is where we store all the gear. After that, this tent with the sleeping bags is where we all log out, so we all stay together and can be near the base" As for the people so adamantly against "storing water/ water cisterns", you do realize that fortifications (ie "castles") in Europe would often have large (and multiple) water cisterns? Precisely for the reasons I mentioned above? And they would often be surrounded by fresh untreated water? Remember: just because the water is there, doesn't mean it is safe to drink. And, on top of that, treating what you need "now" is foolish and shortsighted. Same thing with any other supply of material: you try to get enough so that you don't have to worry about supply for the time being. "Nah, we don't need to harvest all those crops for winter, we've got enough to eat for right now, and if we leave the crops in the field, we can get them later -sudden early frost-" is literally the same thing as " Nah, we shouldn't have a couple of days of potable water inside the base, there is a stream at the bottom of the hill -cue weeklong enemy siege" Plus, having a cistern or two of water at the top of a hill would be incredibly useful, and not just for drinking. Use the water pressure with a hose to put out fires, or set up a piped irrigation system with your garden plots so you don't have to run around like an idiot with a canteen of water watering all the plots by hand. I literally don't understand why people can't think of one reason why having ample water safely stored away wouldn't be useful. The #1 issue in a survival situation is a supply of drinking water.

With Persistence in, what currently can we build in Camps?
Whyherro123 replied to venkman302's topic in General Discussion
I just made a topic about the future of this topic. Come take a look! -
In reality, the "infected" wouldn't just be host to the "zombie disease", but a whole slew of other illnesses and parasites. Covered in their own filth, infested with various worms, ticks and lice, and with infected wounds and such covering them, etc. You ..... wouldn't want to eat them. This is why there is a chance you "get sick" when you get hit by them (or, you did get sick, in past builds. No idea if it is still in). It isn't the "zombie disease", but a "regular" infection.

I am sorry, it is a New Englander thing. We speak Sass first, Drunk second, and English third. What is fun is when the three get mixed

Ok, so all that seems to happen in this patch...
Whyherro123 replied to Shiva_O's topic in General Discussion
Oh no, you've got me all wrong. I, contrary to popular knowledge, actually enjoy getting in a scrap. I like getting geared up, and using said bullets on those who really need a lead-injection. However, what I do not like, is those that 1) Kill you for absolutely zero reason, and 2) those who say that Day Z is supposed to be a PvP-game, and that the devs are stupid/foolish/in-the-wrong for trying to include "survival" elements in such a PvP-based game. Case in point: Yesterday, after the update, my clan and I were trying (and sadly, unsucceeding :( ) to get a truck up and running. Another clan, the only other one on the server, stumbled across us and we proceeded to skirmish back and forth over the truck. Several hours later, with dead on both sides, my clan won the truck (only to find that it was "empty" aka no parts in it). That was fun I don't like the bambis that run up to you on the coast, trying to punch you out because 1) if they win, they get gear 2) if they lose, they get a new spawn. I also don't like the people that stumble into each other, only to shoot at you without even responding to your gestures or VOIP. Or, the bambis that hang around coastal towns, murdering other bambis while trash-talking them in pre-pubescent voices. I want PvP to happen for a reason (fighting over supplies, or to get into a base, etc), not just for shits and giggles. -

Whyherro123 replied to Shiva_O's topic in General Discussion
Maybe.... because Day Z is not a strictly-PVP game? Being a "strict PvP-er" in DayZ is kinda like going to a buffet, and eating only one item, to the exclusion of all others. (Doing nothing but PvP on the coast) When the staff and other patrons try to tell you there are OTHER things to eat, you scream "DONT TELL ME HOW TO EAT". More importantly, because you eat all of everything, the staff replaces that item far more often than others (Adding in guns to the exclusion of survival/health/medical/skills mechanics), letting everything else get cold. Now, because the other food is cold, when you do try it, you scream "THIS FOOD SUCKS". ("There aren't any survival mechanics, all there is to do is PvP!") So on and so forth. Hell, even the developers say so. You and your crows got burned by Hicks a couple of months ago. "Broomsticks and pink dresses", I think the gist of it was. Oh, and Day Z has never really been a "great PvP game". It was originally a military simulator, and the Mod was clunky as all hell. Same thing with the Standalone. "Being able to shoot at people" =/= "great PvP". In order to be a "great PvP game", I would expect there to be little to no lag, no desync, etc, all things that make PvP actually viable, which Day Z does not have. -
Dragging captured people with you: proper kidnapping
Whyherro123 replied to hemmo's topic in Suggestions
Sure I would. So long as some sick fucks can't get their rocks of torturing me, I could care less about some stupid respawn timer. They are probably going to kill me anyways, so what is the difference between a "standard-death 2hr respawn timer" and a "logged-out-while-handcuffed 2hr respawn timer"? Literally nothing. Oh, and implementing a respawn timer specifically for logging-out-while-handcuffed, and NOT for death in general, does nothing for the game but promote asshattery and griefing. -
Dragging captured people with you: proper kidnapping
Whyherro123 replied to hemmo's topic in Suggestions
Pretty much. Let us be honest, here: 95-99% of the time, what do you think is going to happen when you get captured and handcuffed by a group? You will get insulted, probably force-fed shit (maybe literally, if the devs get around to putting in fecal material.....which is why I am so adamant about it not being included), and finally, executed. No thanks. No spawn-timer in the world is worth being talked-down-to by some shitheel and their friends. And, for the idea about making restrains "permanent"....... that has to seriously be one of the stupidest ideas that I have ever heard. -
Let me save you a headache and tell you where to NOT setup camp
Whyherro123 replied to billyangstadt's topic in General Discussion
I am willing to bet that everyone that complains about the map being "too small" has not yet left the "busy areas". I've spent a week on a full-pop server, every day, trekking all across the area bounded by Pusta, Nadezhdino, Tulga, and the Black Forest. I never saw a soul, never heard a shot. Throw a tent up into a side-valley in those mountains, and it will probably never be found. Or, one of the many many fields that lie out in the middle of nowhere. -
Take a look at the above video I posted. A well-placed arrow with a wide broadhead can cause death via exsanguination in about a minute, or even less. That is balanced by the fact that you 1) have to be REALLY practiced with the bow in order to make those shots, and 2) have to be pretty close. With a self-bow, I wouldn't make a shot on an animal (or a person) from farther away than about 20 meters.
-
As others have said, the in-game improvised bow would really, really, REALLY suck in real life. Bows actually require a decent amount of work to be made effective. And, (also as stated before), arrows kill through blood loss, not through "pure damage" like bullets. Put a nice wide broadhead on an arrow, and put said arrow in the torso of an animal, and it should die within 30 seconds or so (see the below video for proof). A shot anywhere else will only really (it will still hurt like nothing else, and put you into severe shock as a result) trip the target up. Oh, and bone arrowheads are perfectly fine: with a solid bow, they can penetrate plenty deep and even punch through other bone. Plus, they don't get damaged as easily as stone/glass heads. (about 2:30 in) This would be the bare minimum for what I would consider a bow "good enough" to hunt large animals or humans with, and only barely. This would be a "stick bow" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFTPxK2X0NA A "normal" self-bow (that is, a bow carved from a solid piece of wood) takes a year, at least, to make I actually prefer un-recurved self bows. Easier to make, and there is little shooting difference between the two styles (recurves might shoot a little faster, but I tend to use shorter arrows, anyways) If anything, I would like to see wooden arrowshafts take a realistic amount of damage after penetrating a target. Usually, the animal falls onto the arrowshaft when it dies, breaking or bending it at the very least. So, you would have to make new shafts, and harvest the points from broken ones. This is why I use reed shafts with wooden foreshafts: easy to make and replace. A little lightweight, but within 20 yards, there is really no discernible difference ( at least on small game) Wooden shafts would probably be more accurate and more "powerful", as a result of the wood flexing around the bowshaft less (archers paradox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer%27s_paradox)and being able to impart more weight to the cutting edges of the head.
