    More pistols

That cap-and-ball revolver is TOTALLY either a Colt 1860 Army or a 1861 Navy. They are 1) MONSTERS, roughly equal to a modern .357, and 2) TOTALLY not fucking Russian

    Dayz Mentioned in Extra Credits.

Many months back, in 2014, I tried to get some of my friends to join me in Day Z. " you mean that game where you spawn in and get tortured to death by squeakers for shits and giggles? Yeah, no thanks". Day Z has been known for its "particular type of playerbase" for a LONNGGGG time, and I believe that this is detrimental for the game in the long run. No, I don't think that PvP should be removed, but I definitely think that there should be 1) other "enemies" other than player vs player (namely, player vs nature and player vs infected), and 2) things to do other than "find gun, shoot players, respawn, repeat". Right now, and for the appreciable future, it doesn't look like that is going to be happening.

    Female

What? Why would females be a "nuisance at best"? With a firearm, the "differences between the sexes" is almost literally nil, if not completely so. Unless, of course, this is just a troll post.

    Fermentation

Ah, alcohol. The reason for the development of human civilization, the cause and solution to all of life's problems. Long thought of as symbolic, symbolic of fire, of light, of blood, and even of life itself. From the very beginning of our ascent as man, to the modern day, alcohol drives us, from the gamut of beverages to the biodiesel that powers our vehicles and cities. Humanity wouldn't be as it is without the magical liquid. ...... I'm sorry, I might be tearing up -ahem- So, asides from the poetic soliloquy above, what could alcohol, and the means for making it, mean for Day Z? Many things. Alcohol could be the very impetus for civilization to make its return, in all seriousness. Alcohol, in its varying concentrations, can be used as a water "purifier", as a medical disinfectant, as a solvent for industrial processes, as a fuel, for lanterns and vehicles, or even as a currency. Clans could gather in a base, not to stock up ammunition and firearms, but instead to distill out ethanol for their vehicles. Traders could carry gallons of hard cider instead of bullets, as a medium of exchange. The possibilities are literally endless. So, let us discuss the possible means to make alcohol in-game. I will divide these into two broad categories, dependent on the amount of effort and time it takes for each. (note: the methods are simplified from real life) -Fermentation :This is by far the oldest method of producing alcohol known to man, dating back to the Neolithic period, easily further (9000 years +), and is remarkably simple, for its effects. Simply take any fruit that contains a decent amount of sugar (berries, grapes, apples, etc), mash them up, strain out the chunky bits, and set the juice aside in an airproof container for several weeks. Over the mouth of the container, insert an airlock, or even a balloon with a hole pricked in it, to let the gases escape and oxygen to stay out. Neolithic peoples used pottery, modern peoples use glass, or you could even use a large plastic jug, like a gallon milk jug. After a couple of weeks, depending on the temperature, the primary fermentation will be done, and you can either drink as-is, or transfer to another container to clarify. The fermentation results from the natural "wild" yeasts that live on the surfaces of fruits. Fermented beverages are solely for drinking. Below, let us discuss the three "major types" of fermented beverage that we could make, with only the things we see in-game.-grapes: Now, I know that we don't have actual grapes in-game, but that doesn't mean that they couldn't be inserted at a later date. They don't even have to be Vitus. In New England, which is a temperate deciduous forest, much like Chernarus, we have what are called "Concord Grapes" native to the region (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concord_(grape). They are actually used to make wines, and can be found growing wild in great long vines in certain areas of Massachusetts-apples: yes, cider! I personally make hard cider at home using little more than a plastic milk jug, unpasteurized cider, and a balloon. Comes out excellent. You essentially cut apples up very small, mash them up, strain the juice, then proceed to follow the general fermentation steps as outlined above. With the amount of apple orchards you can see in South Zagoria, I am rather surprised that there isn't (er, wasn't) a cider-making tradition in the region. Anyway, there are plenty of apples and it wouldn't be that hard to gather them.-berries: generally, any berry that is safe to eat will have at least a decent amount of sugar in them. Elderberries are actually renowned for making a good "fruit wine", and I personally am currently making a wine from mashed "Autumn Olive" berries. -Distillation :This is the more complex method, which is done after fermentation. Essentially, fermentation will only result in an alcoholic solution that is roughly 10-20 proof, or 5 -10% ABV. Distillation raises the ABV by removing water. This is accomplished by taking the fermented mixture and heating it to boiling in a closed system. The alcohol boils out of the solution earlier than water, and then travels into a tube (which is usually surrounded/suspended in cold water), and then into a different container. This distillate is pure alcohol. This pure alcohol can be burned in lanterns/stoves or in vehicles, used as a disinfectant for water or medical operations, or mixed ("cut") with water so that it can be safely consumed.-corn (read: moonshine): Come on, who doesn't know about moonshine?! -Supplies: So, while we could feasibly rely on what Gaia provides for fermentation, we could require some supplies for distillation, or even if we want to make the fermentation process even easiercontainers: on our travels, we could find some glass jugs/jars/what-have-you, that we could use to hold the solutions. airlocks: we could find a "real" airlock, or just some spare, tight-weave cloth or a balloon to use in placetubing: to direct the travel of the distillate gasbrewers yeast: add this to the fermentation mixture to "kick-start" the whole process, and have a more even product when done. What does everyone think?

    Fermentation

When I say "civilization", I mean "organized society, with villages and communities and trading", not "hunter-gatherers/scavengers". Considering how the scientists that study human development (forget the actual title, at the moment) believe that Neolithic villages developed in order to grow enough grain for beer production, not for food (at least not right away). http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/history/did-a-thirst-for-beer-spark-civilization-1869187.html http://www.history.com/news/did-beer-spur-the-rise-of-agriculture-and-politics And many others. While they aren't certain (which "proper" scientists will never be), all of the articles (both actual research journals and magazine articles) say that it is a pretty strong hypothesis.

^ I use plastic gallon milk jugs as my primary, then I transfer to a glass secondary and submerge them in 180 degree F water for a minute or so apiece. I then leave them in the bottles until they clarify, and tend not to bother with carbonation.

    Fermentation

Nope, the fuels work differently. In reality, gasoline is a really shitty choice for "post-apocalyptic" vehicle fuel, pretty much for that reason, among others. They are more fuel-efficient, last longer, and require fewer "technical" parts. In general

    Fermentation

You can run a diesel engine off of anything liquid-ish that burns, essentially, so long as it has a filter to keep chunky pieces out of the works. Ethanol is rather good at running a diesel engine. You could also run a diesel engine off of rendered grease or fat.

    Primitive Shelters

So, rather obviously, we have tents that can be used to store gear. They are lightweight, portable, and quick to take up and break down. However, what happens if we don't have a tent, or want to stay in one place for a while? Run a garden or trap a line, perhaps? Then we might want something a little more permanent and comfortable. Lean-To: The Lean-To is the easiest form of shelter to make, just using sticks and leaves/pine needles/brush. A single person can build one with a few hours work. However, they are not fully encapsulating, blocking the wind and weather only on one side. In that video, the presenter also builds what is known as a "fire wall", which serves to both protect the fire from wind, as well as to reflect the heat into the shelter. Almost necessary when using a lean-to. More on that later. A-Frame: Essentially, a lean-to mirrored onto itself. More labor-intensive, but fully enclosed and insulated, and therefore, more comfortable. I've slept in an A-frame outside when it was snowing and -20 degrees Fahrenheight, and I was plenty warm. It would take a single person quite a while to build an A-frame, but a group can make one in much less time. This makes sense, as A-frames are more suitable for group-survival, being larger, with more "interior space" for gear and sleeping. There are also some little improvements you can make for a "primitive shelter" that would make your stay more comfortable, as well as being pragmatic for use around camp. Tripod: You can use a tripod for almost anything, from suspending water over a fire, smoking meat, processing large game, etc. Fire reflector: Used for protecting your fire from wind, as well as to make it "more effective" (AKA lose less heat to the environment around), by reflecting most of the heat into your shelter.

Spawning with something to suicide with

You aren't supposed to suicide, ya dingus. I really hate the "spawn, dislike spawn, jump off building" thing we have, and would be perfectly comfortable with it being removed. ProtiP; you can run across the entire map in under half an hour. If half an hour is too long for you, you probably shouldn't be playing. Deal with your spawn and survive. Hell, play the game the way it was "meant" to be played. Does the word "antigame" mean anything anymore?

    RPG Comeing To DayZ

Basically. While I can certainly see the "uses" for an RPG: taking out vehicles, taking out bases, taking out large groups of enemies , I ..... can't exactly see the "need" for an RPG. Taking out vehicles? Wouldn't it be "more efficient" to stop the vehicle (with a roadblock, which would be pretty easy to make), shoot the driver, and take the vehicle? My plan: a running truck, all for the cost of one bullet. RPG: ruins of a truck (all that fuel, all that gear!), for the cost of an RPG round Taking out bases? Wouldn't it be "just as effective" to starve out the defenders, or set their gate on fire? That way, you don't waste a RPG round, and all the stuff inside doesn't get destroyed..... Taking out large groups of enemies? If they are players, and group up like that, they deserve to die. If there is a group of infected that large, 1) you fucked up, and 2) small arms fire will be adequate Meanwhile, we don't have a realistic clothing system, or even one that makes sense. Nor working temperatures, nor "survival mechanics".... But, you know, helicopter and RPG :( I am seriously concerned about where this game is going
  12. Whyherro123

Can we agree this is feesable?

Exactly. "shacks" in H1Z1 are fucking EVERYWHERE for two reasons 1) It takes, like, 6 boards, a couple of nails, and some assorted, easy-to-find junk to build the most common "shack 2) Building it takes about 60 seconds of real-time Here we go: http://h1z1.gamepedia.com/Small_Shack Meanwhile, make the above suggested "sheds" take many boards, many nails, and a decent amount of time, and they won't be everywhere.

    What changed with DayZ?

I don't know, man, I happen to love, love, LOVE the "new" Berenzino. It actually looks (well, looked) like a place where people actually lived. The "old" (Arma II) cities looked...... sterile.
  14. .....Actually, plenty of people on these forums complain about the completely-nonsensical inventory system, and want to see a "more realistic" sytstem

I LOVE the SAS Survival Handbook! I keep it tucked into my bag, and made a lot of it the basis of my survival class.

How to Fix the Fashion Issue

Pretty much. When I wear a hoodie under a sweater, I tend to not shove stuff into the front pockets. It gets bulky and ungainly otherwise.

How to Fix the Fashion Issue

I am sorry, but I must agree with Jexter on this one, and say that has to be one of the most asinine things I think I have ever read. Of course, what would make the above better is if a raincoat protected you from rain, but also drastically increased your body temperature (causing you to sweat), you then "got wet", and caused you to develop hypothermia as a result. Happened to one of the kids in my survival class, and he had to be rushed to the hospital as a result.

How to Fix the Fashion Issue

Let us examine "clothing" from a real-world "point of view": The game-world Day Z takes place in apparently is in the middle of the Autumn season. The chlorophyll counts in deciduous trees are decreasing, leading to the "leaves changing color". Pumpkins are fully grown in gardens. Apples are ready to be picked, if not even slightly overripe (can you still find "rotten ones" every once in a while?). It is October 19th, and all of those things mentioned above has already or already "happening". Pumpkins and apples have been ready for at least a couple of weeks, and the trees are already changing. Hell, up where my sister goes to college, they have had a dusting of snow! Right now, it is 40 degrees F outside, and overnight, it got below freezing. I am sitting at my computer wrapped up in blankets. What does that mean for the game? Really, the "game-world" should be colder. Sure, in a New England autumn, being in the sun on a nice sunny day can be pleasant, warm even, but being in the shade or getting exposed to a gust of wind can and will make you shiver. Getting wet should be a problem, even during the day. At night, it should get down close to, or even below, freezing. What does that mean for clothing? Well, firstly, let me describe what I wear in weather like this. ( I am a Boy Scout leader, so I spend a large portion of the Autumn season out in the woods). 1) Wool. Wool is probably the "best" fabric to wear, as it is both warm, fire-resistant, and keeps it insulating properties even when wet. I usually wear a light wool shirt under a heavier wool sweater. This lets me either take off the sweater if it gets too hot (from walking or exerting myself), or put it on when it gets too cold. 2) Pants. My go-to pair of pants is actually a milsurp pair of camo trousers. While they are cotton, they have a tight weave and are treated with water repellent, making them relatively resistant to water. Plus, they are tough (have never ripped), and have plenty of pockets for storage. After those, I wear a pair of canvas trousers. 3) Extras (hats, gloves, socks). I will almost always carry a "emergency" cap, made from fleece pile, in a side pocket. I also usually have on a knit wool cap as well. I will throw on a pair of gloves if the temp drops, and ALWAYS wear wool socks, maybe even double up. So, what does that above mean for the game? Firstly, if you actually look, most of the "beginning" clothing (T-shirts, Check-shirts, jeans, etc) are either of a cotton blend or made of 100% cotton. This means they would be less than useless (read: actively harmful) at keeping you warm. Remember: "cotton kills". Cotton loses all insulation properties when it gets wet, and actually actively sucks body heat from you. I am assuming that much of the "military clothing", with the exception of GORKA, is also of cotton/polyester blend. Not great, but only a little better than cotton. There are, of course, articles of clothing that would be great at keeping you warm (puffy jackets, wool coats, knit caps, etc), but many people only wear them until they get "military clothing", which is yet another aspect of "end game" equipment that I 100% disagree with. I dislike the whole "endgame" concept to begin with, but clothing being better than other clothing simply by being "military" is asinine. The fact that we don't have a "proper" layering system to clothing ( long-sleeved shirt under a hoodie, all that under a raincoat, with a knit cap, etc), is what is fueling this idiocy, I am willing to bet. In real life, I don't take off my shirt when I throw on a jacket. I can fit a "windbreaker" (aka those new athletic jacket things) over a hooded sweatshirt or a wool coat, etc.

    Gagging bound players

Annnndddddd .... people will still communicate with teammates, through TS, which is how 99.99999% of the playerbase communicates.
  20. And then, as you walk, you either blow a hole in your asscheek, or blow one/both of "the boys" off. Pass
  21. 1) Lack of character customization. We look all the same, even when we don't. I am pretty sure I see at least 75% of the available "characters" every time I play. This makes identifying my teammates a bit of a PITA, considering how we all basically wear the "same clothing" as well. Seeing 4 different Dean Halls, all in Gorka, makes a firefight rather .... onerous. 2) Character speed, movement, lack of inertia. The fact that we can sprint for kilometers, across hilly terrain, with a full pack across the back is immersion-breaking, to say the least. The only time I have ever had to worry about hyperthermia (aka being too hot) is when the temperatures on servers were broken. Oh, and I also dislike how the go-to counter to gunfire isn't "taking/sticking to cover", but "zig-zagging like an asshole". We can change direction while running wayyy too fast. No intertia whatsoever. We don't pick up speed when going down a slope, either. 3) Stupid-as-hell medical system Fuck me, this I hate the most of all (asides from "everything else" that I dislike : P). Dirty rags instantly stopping bleeding from major wounds, internal bleeding not being a thing. Medications (antibiotics, epinephrine, morphine) instantly working, as well as 1) not having side effects and 2) being 100% effective. "shock" being merely a "knockout" mechanic, as opposed to the interesting mechanics it could be (shaking, loss of vision, vomiting, etc). Painkillers (and morphine) not doing fuck-all to help with shock. Morphine magically repairing broken limbs, as opposed to merely being a powerful "end-game" painkiller (with appropriate "side effects"). If the game had actual "realistic", or hell, even a slightly-"authentic" medical system, the game would be so much better. Right now, it is "take a bullet to the chest, strap a dirty rag over it, and eat some beans. Get back into combat." As with the overall lack of "survival" mechanics, this is nothing less than a disappointment, and a waste of potential. It seems the devs like to introduce mechanics, and as soon as they do so, stop working on them in favor of "other" mechanics.
  22. So, recently I've been reading what could be considered the cornerstone of post-apocalyptic fiction: The Earth Abides. In it, the planet is swept free of human life by a form of measles in the 1940s. There are only a few survivors, and, in the most part, they have more difficulty with the environment than they do with other people. Hordes of locusts, hungry rats, ants, the loss of electricity and running water, all are more serious problems than other people. The only instance in the entirety of the novel when other people cause issues is when an outsider comes into the group. He isn't even hostile, but he carries a disease that causes fully 1/3 of the group to die. In fact, all of the fatalities in the book are from disease, including many children as a result of diarrhea, which in all seriousness is a killer in a situation without "modern" medicine. Eventually, in the 1980s, the group has degenerated into "primitive" (they use metal, but are stuck with bows and spears because all the ammunition is gone/doesn't work) tribes, that grow corn and hunt in the hills around San Francisco. That is what I would like Day Z to be. Instead of worrying about bandits killing you for no reason other than shits and giggles, how about a source of clean water? Or, getting enough food to last a winter? Or, heating, especially since the gasoline is all gone? Or, diseases, from the vermin population that is spiraling out of control due to a lack of human control on their populations? Instead of the "24/7 day NO ZOMBIEZ 10000% LOOT" bullshit we have going on right now. More "introspective", I guess. We are, in effect, witnessing the "passing of an age". "The Long Dark" (/snerk, yes the shout-out was intentional, as that game encompasses almost everything "survival" should be). This game can be so much more than just another PvP-shooter.
  23. Yeah, just grab any old pipe you find laying about and shove cartridges into it, that will work fine  inb4 the pipe explodes and blows your hand off. At least if a bow "goes wrong", it won't kill you. Plus, with the above, you are still tied onto loot spawns that realistically, would be dwindling quite quickly. 12 Gauge shotshells don't grow on trees. Arrow shafts, on the other hand, can be found everywhere. Plus, you know, you can't exactly fucking aim with that thing, either. Good luck hitting, much less killing, anything past spitting distance. At least smoothbore shotguns have sights and stocks. Hell, blackpowder muskets have sights and stocks. That thing? Nah, waste of space
  24. Have you been to Berezino recently? There is some vegetation growth. It looks like it has been a season or so. Some tall grass, plants growing up through cracks and such, but nothing too extreme. It looks good. It most definitely has not been 5 years. Gasoline, even with additives, is only "good" for two years or so. Same thing with medications like epinephrine. My personal belief, along with many others on the forum, is that it has only been a couple of months. 2 years, max.

Day Z as it should be : The Earth Abides

Then chances are you just wasted your bullet. You might have needed that bullet later, to shoot an animal or to kill a zombie. And, depending on where you hit, you likely destroyed everything they had on them in that spot. This is something I don't understand why other people don't understand: if loot becomes rare (actually "rare", not just "find it in the next town" rare), the chances of getting what you need off a KoS-player is less, not higher. Sure, food is food, and one can is as good as another (until it gets destroyed via bullet), but bullets? With the sheer number of calibers there are in the game, if they become rarer, the chances of finding them via looting becomes less, and thusly, the chances of getting bullets to replace the one you just shot become lower. And, with the number of bullets required to kill a player lately, chances are it won't be "one shot, one kill". They will survive and run off, and you just wasted the bullet. If you have a Mosin, 9mm isn't worth jack-shit to you as a survivor. In fact, ammunition in a caliber you don't have takes up valuable space and weight. I cannot wait until the weight system gets implemented, the days of sprinting around with 5 different ammunition types in your backpack will be over. Arrows? I can make arrows. Until a bullet press and reloading supplies get implemented, you can't just "make" bullets.
