"Nail Bats" and other (realistically) crappy weapons
Whyherro123 replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
And.... here we go. https://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/223709-baseball-bat-make-it-deadlier-by-yourself/?hl=%2Bbaseball+%2Bbat+%2Bnails The video I linked to is particularly interesting. A baseball bat modification that is actually ridiculously effective. -
"Nail Bats" and other (realistically) crappy weapons
Whyherro123 replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
That is, of course, if they insert the nails at a straight angle. Both the picture I linked to, and the in-game model, don't. Sure, you will get cut up. But, again, I will take some lacerations puncturing and deep bruising over a shattered bone. Might just be me, but "heavily injured" beats "crippled" -
"Nail Bats" and other (realistically) crappy weapons
Whyherro123 replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
Not really. 1) As above, the nails are likely to be driven through the bat at an angle. Hell, this is what they did in-game, including having the heads, not the sharp ends, sticking out! Couple that with the point above, about how the nails are going to come into contact with the target first, make the bat "roll", and strike a glancing blow. 2) Bone is hard. Really, REALLY, REALLY hard. Steel knives often chip when they cut into bone. A relatively-dull-point striking at an oblique angle is unlikely to punch straight through 3) The head of the target can move freely with the blow, which in effect would severely lessen the amount of force impacted. A human skull, neck and spine are not nice and braced, immobile, on a table for you to swing at 4) All the nails would do, even if they did punch through, is make a nice neat little puncture wound. Considering how people can easily survive getting shot through the head, that ..... isn't really going to cut it. I am not saying it wouldn't be effective. It would still hurt like hell. It just wouldn't plow through your skull like a missle. -
"Nail Bats" and other (realistically) crappy weapons
Whyherro123 replied to Whyherro123's topic in General Discussion
Huh, I thought I canceled this thread. ....... woops B: nail bat. Of course, I would prefer to not be hit at all, but if I had to choose, I would choose nail bat. The swing would be slower, the force of the swing would be directed away from my flesh by the projecting nails, and the guy is unlikely to get his weapon back, as capillary action in the flesh would effectively "suck" the nails into the muscle, making it hard to pull away. Adrenaline would cover the pain, at least at first, and I could beat the guy to death before he could pull it out of me and back for another swing. I would take a couple of puncture wounds and some heavy bruising over a shattered humerus/femur any day of the week. -
What is the best weapons for a sniper operator

I don't understand this. A "nail-bat", when viewed realistically, is a pretty shitty weapon. Maybe I'll make a new thread about it. -
What is the best weapons for a sniper operator
Whyherro123 replied to kataro's topic in General Discussion
#1 Your brain. Actually thinking ahead will save your bacon 99% of the time, above any "loadout" you could choose. Think about where you are, where the enemy is likely to go, and any and all available cover between here, there, and especially behind you. Nothing quite like sneaking up on a scoped-in bushwookie to make you feel good about yourself. 2) STICK AND MOVE. So many "snipers" I see like to lay in the same spot, shooting at the same spots. The Blaze is good for avoiding this; with its 2rnd capacity, you have to be good about changing positions. Take a shot, wait a minute, move back into cover, then move to the next posting. 3) Guns Now, of course, the "best" weapon is the one you are most comfortable with. Me? I hate the WInchester. I love me some Blaze. Good iron sights (that glow in the dark!), flat shooting out to 300 meters (Being able to mount a scope is just gravy), ability to "shotgun" if the enemy gets too close, and a single box of ammo will last you for 10 reloads. Some people think that is a bad thing, I just reply " SKIRMISH, MOTHERFUCKER!". With the Blaze, you have to be able to bounce from cover to cover. Reloading takes only a second (do the snaploaders even exist anymore?), but you still want to swivel your head around like a tweaker. Push forward, pop a shot, fall back, pop a shot, push forward, take a shot, lather rinse repeat. If you are not careful, and stop skirmishing, you will be out-shot, even by a 5rnd bolt-action. For secondaries, I usually carry two: a sawed-off shotgun with plenty of shells, and a revolver with plenty of shells and preferably 2 speedloaders. Both give you plenty of punch for the space (revolver in a holster + ammo and loaders= 3 slots, shotgun + ammo = 5 slots). Yeah, an automatic pistol has a higher capacity, but you have skill and derring-do on your side. I've out-shot AR-weilding kiddies with a revolver before (quite easily, if I may say so myself) -
In a "real life" pandemic, even with absurdly-high infection rates, there are always populations that remain isolated from the infection, usually due to distance from population centers and difficult terrain. Really, the same could have happened in Day Z. All it would have taken was an interruption of infrastructure (water and power, mostly), in and of itself highly likely due to the civil war ala ARMAII, and the so-called "secondary kill" ( other diseases, like infections, malnutrition, and chronic diseases, as well as accidents, starvation, and bad water) could have killed off the population that remained isolated from the "zombie disease". Plus, since the isolated populations never got exposed to the "zombie disease", they didn't "reanimate", which is why there aren't tens-of-thousands of "infected" roaming around Chernarus.

I don't really understand the whole "losing food with different tools" mechanic, it just doesn't make sense to me, as someone trained in Wilderness Survival. The ground isn't that dirty. Believe me, if you were hungry enough, you would eat the beans you spilled on the ground. I've done it. It is called "Camp Spice", and it doesn't hurt you, not the little bit you get on the food by dropping it. Making different tools take longer makes infinitely more sense.

So then you would actually have to .... you know.... form a community on the new server! God forbid! -
Why not? They 1) Aren't exactly uncommon in real life, and 2) aren't exactly a game-changer. "Oh boy, now I can survive after getting shot in the chest with 2-3 pistol bullets...... with my ribs broken and the wind knocked out of me!" A rifle round or a blade will punch straight through most kevlar vests.

1) They. aren't. FUCKING. ZOMBIES. How many times does this have to be repeated!? The "zombies" in Day Z are literally people infected with a mystery disease that eliminates higher brain functions. https://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1zbsks/psa_the_zombies_arent_dead_theyre_infected_living/cfsdipd Since they are alive, they require food, water, and shelter from the environment, just like every living thing on the planet. They don't do the above (eat, drink, take shelter, etc), because they aren't done yet. Just like the player characters don't sleep or eliminate waste, you can safely assume it gets done "off screen". 2) No. If there was a nuclear power plant in Chernarus, it would have already been on the map. Since there isn't a nuclear power plant in the in-game world, then guess what? There wasn't a nuclear plant in South Zagoria. End of line, end of discussion. Hint: we totally know what was going on right before the apocalypse. According to the devs, ARMA II, with the giant civil war, was canon. Day Z takes place after that. Another Hint: Fukishima didn't explode. The combination of the earthquake and the tsunami flooded and overwhelmed the backup generators, which in turn made it more difficult (not impossible) to maintain the reaction properly.Yes, there were explosions at the plant, but they were a result of the damage, not the plant itself blowing up. Oh, and the amount of actual radioactive material released by the plant? Minimal, essentially to the point of being harmless. Nobody from the plant has died as a result of exposure, and their cancer-risks aren't even increased by a significant amount. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disaster

1) the game is supposed to be realistic, at least, as realistic as possible ( a term the devs call "authentic"). There are (supposed to be, anyways) hordes of zombies in the cities because urban areas have 1) easy access to shelter 2) readily available food (wonder why we don't see rats and pigeons and seagulls around?), as well as access to water. Military bases have much less of all three. There is no reason for the infected to congregate around said military base, other than "artificial difficulty", which is bad. 2) What kinds of gas? Remember: it has been months, at the very least, since society has collapsed. Where exactly is this gas coming from? Who is producing it, introducing it into the pipes, and letting all their effort go to waste by allowing the pipes to leak? There isn't even any electricity anymore, so how are the gases being moved through the pipes? Magic? South Zagoria, the region of Chernarus we play in, is canonically a poor, underdeveloped, and war-torn region, to the point where city dwellers are shitting in outhouses in the largest city on the map. There would be no reason at all to include a nuclear power plant. Not even touching how nuclear power plants DO NOT EXPLODE. That just...... isn't how they work. Without regular input from the engineers, a nuclear power plant will actually shut itself down. The world learned quite a bit from Chernobyl. You, my friend, need to read up on "apocalypse logistics" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ApocalypticLogistics). Many of the things "wrong" with Day Z, and with your suggestion, are wrong because they aren't realistic, or follow any logistical sense. EDIT: No, you have got it all wrong. "Chernarus" is the fictional country, "South Zagoria" is the region of Chernarus we play in. The map of the game world is a map of South Zagoria. http://www.dayzrp.com/t-Chernarus-vs-South-Zagoria

I like this idea, but I have some questions: 1) Why, exactly, would there be "hordes of zombies" remaining at the military zone? Remember: Day Z takes months (most likely)/years (least likely) after society shat the bed. The "zombies" (actually just humans infected with a disease) need to eat, drink, and take shelter from exposure. So, for there to be "hordes of zombies", there would have to be something there to attract their attention: ample supply of food, lights/sounds going on and off, buildings to shelter in, etc. In this game, you can't just "have" hordes of zombies. 2) If there is gas and radiation, there won't be hordes of zombies. They need to breathe, and are as susceptible to radiation poisoning as a regular human. Besides, where is Chernarus going to get leaking radiation? There aren't any nuclear plants in South Zagoria, (not even discussing how that isn't how nuclear plants "work"), and nuclear weapons are inert until they are "activated". They don't just piss "radiation" out 24/7 I totally want to see less military "tacticool/geardo" weapons/clothing/presence in the game, but the above suggestions don't make all that much sense.

Depends on how the virus is transmitted. Airborne? Hell yeah. Bodily fluids? Person-to-person contact? Literally any other transference method other than airborne? A gas mask will 1) be entirely useless and 2) an active hindrance to survival efforts
-
1) That has to be one of the stupidest things I think I have ever seen. 2) It probably does little-to-jack-shit against any "real" gas 3) I really don't understand why gas masks are so goddamn popular. They are (in real life) hot, they block 99% of your vision, etc.

I still maintain that doing things slowly and deliberately is more "effective" 99% of the time. Would I sprint away from "zombies", or would I walk? ......are you really asking me that? Seriously? Of fucking course I would run away from the zombies. I wouldn't sprint, though. That is a good way to trip (over something on the ground, over even over your own two feet). A nice steady jog would expand the distance nicely. When reloading, I would quickly but carefully remove the rounds from my pocket, which I ideally would have readily available for just this situation. ( I am a fervent believer in that where you put things in your inventory determines how fast you can get to them. In a vest/belt pouch? Fastest retrieval. Stuffed in a pants pocket? Have to dig for it, takes a little longer. Deep inside a backpack? You have to take that sucker off). Frantically grasping for loose rounds is a great way to drop them. Same thing with loading. Stuffing the rounds frantically into the chamber is a great way to jam the firearm. Move deliberately, not frantically. Of course, realistically, I would back myself into a corner and start to crush skulls with the Mosin buttstock. No need to frantically reload, or even run away. Just reverse the firearm and go to town.

Really, Day Z has been on a downward spiral for quite a while now. Yes, new games (especially Fallout) have impacted that trend, but this has been happening since long before FO4 was released. I, with the exception of a couple days here and there, haven't played Day Z in months. The game has essentially remained as clunky as it was at release, no new mechanics that interest me have been introduced, and the "survival" aspects of the game have long been ignored in favor of more guns. Yeah, we get infected on .59 experimental, but ..... they are the same old zombies that we had before. Woop de doo. Same thing with my clanmates. I mean, you can only stash a tent full of guns (for no real purpose) so many times, you can only kill other players at the NWAF so many times, you can only roam the coast as a murderhobo so many times before the game becomes trite. There .... just isn't anything to do, other than kill other players. And, thanks to the clunkiness of the engine, among other things, even that gets .... "boring", after a while. For those that are saying: "this isn't a game, this is to test bugs!". Yeah, sure. Then why am I not getting paid? Why did I have to pay for the "game"? Hell, I bet if BI could go back in time, before the EA-release, they would have done the whole Alpha phase in-house. Day Z Standalone has been almost nothing but bad PR for BI. Day Z Standalone has pretty much become the industry face for "bad Early Access games", and is pretty much made fun of in certain circles. Hell, if I want to really reach, FO4 is a better survival game than Day Z. And you don't have to eat or drink in FO4. There is scarcity, there is difficulty, the environment is a hazard, there is actual fear in FO4, at least in the early game. With the changes to Feral Ghouls in FO4, it can be said that FO4 is a better "zombie game", than Day Z. Those things are vicious and terrifying. Don't get me wrong, I love Day Z, and I want it to succeed. It is just that Day Z has pretty much become that older cousin that is a shithead, picking fights with everyone and sits on the couch all day, drinking and farting. "Hope and despair". You just want to take him out behind the woodshed and beat him until he shapes up, but you know it won't really help, he has to "fix himself on his own".

For the whole "shoes" thing, it is actually rather easy to make comfortable and "tough" sandal-type shoes from pieces of rubber and cloth. If you can't find any shoes in-game, go up to a car with a knife and some rags and you can make some feet coverings. As for vehicles, they NEED to be difficult to drive. This game was supposed to be the "anti-game", remember? The sedan can be the "easy" (aka automatic) vehicle, but with all others, you should definitely have to shift through the gears.

I would like to debate the last point. In an "actual survival situation", you don't want to be rushing around. Rushing through something makes you MUCH more likely to make a mistake, and therefore, hurt yourself. Case in point: last weekend, I went camping with my Scout troop. The kids are rather young (between 12 and 15), and as such, they have a tendency to get ....... "excited", and want to do things as fast as possible. One of the Scouts was opening cans of soup for lunch with a can opener. He tried to open them quickly, and actually stabbed himself in the hand with my can opener when it slipped. Because I keep my tools sharp and clean, the wound was relatively minor, but in a Day Z -like situation, that would be a serious infection risk. Later on, a different Scout took a pot of water to the fire. Because he was rushing, he actually dumped the pot of water onto the fire. Luckily, he managed to avoid jamming his hand into the embers, but it was still a giant PITA to rebuild the fire. On the hike to the site, one of the kids got bored with the slow pace, and double-timed it ahead. Because he was rushing, he rolled his ankle, tripped, and faceplanted into the cold, wet ground. Now, because this wasn't a survival situation (had extra clothing, pain relievers, and he had on high boots), his injuries were effectively little more than a bruised ego. But, do that in a "survival situation", and you could easily break your leg. All in all, in an actual "survival situation", you want to take things as SLOWLY as possible. Walk, don't run. Walk around things as opposed to stepping over them. Etc etc etc. Doing anything quickly drastically increases the chances of you messing up, which in turn results in either injury or failure. Plus, doing something slowly and calmly lets you remain "in control" of yourself much easily. The biggest "enemy" during a survival situation isn't the weather (although its a big one), wild animals, or even zombies. It is yourself, giving in to fear and panic. When you are afraid, you make bad decisions. Remaining in control of your emotions is #1 in any situation, and during my Wilderness Survival class, I would instantly fail anyone who panicked or showed fear, regardless of how proficient they were. Panic and fear is bad. Moving fast is bad

Ethanol alcohol (which is the one we drink) will make you sick, and even it is harmful at high concentrations. You can die if you drink enough ethanol. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_intoxication#Acute_alcohol_poisoning) Methanol or Isopropanol, which the in-game Alcohol Tincture most likely is, will make you sick or kill you if consumed. Not even inculding the essential oils that are in the Alcohol Tincture. So ..... that specific point is debatable.
-
How so, exactly? They shuffle at you. Slowly, might I add. Things like stairs would be a major obstacle. All you have to do to avoid harm is to move at a slight jog. I find "slow zombies" HILARIOUS, not threatening. The only way you can actually be killed by them is if you take a solid grab of the "idiot ball". I really do not understand that argument, sorry.

Welding is a "trained skill": you can't really just pick it up as a hobby. It actually takes a decent amount of work to get a welding certification. However, there is definitely potential for there to be trained welders among the survivors. Probably not common, but possible. Again, however, like the above poster said...... it isn't feasible. It isn't sustainable: every time you make a weld, you are using up the fuel that can't be replaced. Hope those welds are worth it! You can make more wooden boards, you can make more nails, you can't make gaseous oxygen, acetylene, nor the solder needed to weld. -1, in my book. Or, at least, make them exceedingly rare.
