Not just with the weapon in his hand, when it is pointed at his own head

Considering how the animation takes, like, 20 seconds to finish, is very deliberate ( you CAN'T hide what you are doing) and requires actual player input to "carry out" ..... no, the game doesn't need a "safety measure" for suicide. The problem, in this case, was between chair and keyboard. " Oh shit guys, I am entering the suicide animation! Quick, someone google how to get out!" Problem solved

Sure, if the guy was poking around my base-site, I would have no issues at all with the OP killing him. The thing is: they guy the OP killed wasn't even near his base-site. They were "5 minutes away", in a map that you can sprint across in 20-30 minutes. The OP killed him "because he was poaching/trespassing on HIS lands", aka because he wanted to for shits and giggles. Contrary to popular opinion, I actually have very little "issue" with most forms and fashions of PvP in Day Z. The one that I do not like is KoS, especially when the players try to disguise KoS-asshattery as some form of Roleplay. " I am roleplaying a psychopath" is a common one. No, you aren't. You are just being an asshole. And, to me, if you are going to be an asshole, whether in game or in real-life, own it. If the OP ended his post with " see, this is what happens when I get bored", I would have zero issues with this whole thread. Instead, he tried to tie it into some little bullshit lesson about "waste/need/poaching" shenanigans, all in a game where you literally cannot own anything. Those cows respawn every time the server resets, they aren't "his" cows. If he fenced them in, fed them, etc, and then the other player came in and killed them for shits n' giggles, yeah, call him a poacher. Until then, you just KoS. Which is perfectly (well, debatable) okay, so long as you aren't afraid to call it what it is I was being overwhelmingly facetious about the permits. Those cows reset and respawn every time the server does, they don't "belong" to anyone, until animal husbandry gets introduced. Who cares if the other player wants to waste bullets on meat he can't even use? Believe me or not, but I actually agree. However, in this case 1) the cows will respawn, and presumably will until 1.0 release. Until then, getting upset about "wasting game" is nonsensical. You can't get angry about "wasting" unlimited resources :P 2) This is a game where, so far, the only things you can "own" are that which you can carry. Until animal husbandry is implemented, with branding, marking, corralling/penning, etc, so you can show "ownership" of animals, or even land, you shouldn't really get all pissy about someone doing exactly the same thing as you were planning on doing, on a random group of animals that probably follow the same path every time they respawn. Who gives a shit if he wasn't going to carry 9/10 of the meat? He effectively killed and butchered the cows for you, and you didn't have to spend a bullet. Plus, he spent all his bullets. Win + Win + Win, in my book. My major issue with this whole shindig is how the OP tried to justify killing the guy. If he just said " I saw him, and felt like killing him", I could at least respect his honesty.

Damn straight. Half, if not more, of the map goes completely unused. The map is not "too small" or "deforested", it just doesn't get fucking used for anything. You can't say the "map is too small" if the entire player base can be found in approximately 6 locations, and about 5-10 square kilometers out of 225+
-
Exactly, it would be different if he actually marked trees with blazes, or put up signs, or anything. If you are gonna be an asshole and KoS without "interacting", own it. Don't try to deflect and play it off as RP "he was trespassing/poaching".
-
What the hell are you talking about, " The map is too small"? .... Stop going to the same places as everyone else, you knob-end. "The edges of the map" Haven't been a good place to hide shit since the goddamn mod. As soon as my clan plays Day Z together in any meaningful number, we always make a run along the western and northern edges of the map, because that is where every scrublet and their mother tries to hide a camp. I don't think I've picked up a rifle from NWAF/Myshkino tents in the last couple of weeks. Asides from that: 1) Go to places other people have little reason to go. Take a look at the region encompassed by Nadezhdino in the west, Pusta in the south, Tulga in the east, and the Black Forest in the north. That region is heavily forested, rugged and hilly, and has essentially no desirable loot spawns. Several patches ago, I played daily, for 2 weeks straight, on a full 50 pop, and asides from the lost freshspawn that wandered up the road and starved to death, I never saw a soul 2) Keep on going to places people won't go A couple of weeks ago, my clan found a MASSIVE camp in the woods, northwest of Sinistok. At the end of the only dirt road that leads out of town, we found 3-4 tents, literally 20 or so barrels, and 2 trucks. We only found it because one of our new guys said " Hey, where does that road go?". Roads, no matter if they are marked or even unpaved, are highways straight into the wilderness. They attract attention, as you can see in the above example. If there is a road leading somewhere, someone WILL follow it eventually, "Because it is there". This is why I don't understand why people don't want to build things like lean-tos in the woods, and think that barricading a building is "good enough" for basebuilding. If a road leads to/near your base, it will be found eventually, if just through the existence of dispersion. "high density to low density" 3) Keep on going to places people won't go So, if people will follow roads "just because", where do you set up camp? Off the roads. Don't go to the end of the road, then into the woods to set up camp. That is predictable. Instead, go halfway up that dirt road, then follow a streambed up the hill, then follow the ridgeline for a couple hundred meters, then set up camp. That way, you won't have 1) a highway leading straight to your base, or 2) limit the area that people have to look. What sounds better: " hey guys, I found a camp off the north road from Msta", or " hey guys, I found a camp at the end of a streambed. I have no idea where I am (hint: streambeds don't show up on Day Z DB or iZurvive)" 4) Spread the fuck out Quick, what colors are most of the tents and barrels? Blue, awkward green, yellow, red? Even if they blend in well, they still look like human-made objects, due to the straight edges and deliberately-rounded curves. In "real life", when camping, you are "supposed to" spread out when you set up a campsite, to both 1) have less of an effect on the surrounding vegetation and 2) to not be such a nuisance for other people. What is louder, dirtier, and attracts more attention: A cluster of 4-5 tents, with cooking equipment, storage and other items stacked around, or the same site, spread out, with different areas for different activities ( cooking, then 200 feet away, fireplace, then 200 feet away, sleeping, etc). In Scouts, pre-built campsites usually have 100 feet between different "spots", to reduce noise and so on. In my summer camp, we have 10 different "campsites", each sleeping 30 people, spread across half a mile of terrain. During the busiest part of the day, you won't even know there is 100 people in the next site, as you can't even hear or see them. Hell, if you want, you can go to your tent and be completely alone from the rest of the people in your site! Such as you should do in Day Z. Place a tent down, then move over 100 feet and place another one. Don't cluster your tents around a fire or light sources. Trucks can be seen for very far through the woods. The map is plenty big enough for every activity in the game to take place. It is just that probably 1/4 - 1/3, at the very least, of the map goes completely unused. Plus, we can sprint everywhere, full tilt, without stopping. That makes the map feel even smaller. Why people think we need a helicopter is beyond me.

How is it YOUR land, YOUR cattle, or why did he need YOUR permission? Did you file a complaint with the local Environmental Police, or is the land on a deed under your name in the City Hall in Novo? No? Then using that as a "reason"/"excuse" for killing the guy is ...... really rather stupid, and it wasn't all that funny if you meant it as a joke. If you wanted to kill the guy, just say that. " I saw him and wanted to kill him". Done. Don't try to dress something up as it isn't.

It is also for the mod, and really, REALLY out of date.

Up-to-date Gun Comparison: CR527 vs IZH 18?
Whyherro123 replied to tatchell (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
The IZH rifle is yet another firearm in Day Z that appears to be utterly useless. I can't think of ANY time when I was actually glad to see the IZH, nor when I was actually forced to use it due to lack of firearm. The CR527 can be chambered, can accept a scope, or can use a quick-release 5rnd magazine. The IZH ..... can accept a single round. If anything, the IZH should be all-but-immune to jamming ..... if firearm malfunctions are ever included. -
In reality, the only form of sugar you could really make would be maple/birch syrups. You could make jams/preserves from other fruits, but they wouldn't really be all that sweet. While most "maple syrup/sugar" is made from the sap of the "Sugar Maple", other maple types would work as well. Sugar maple just has MUCH more sugar in the sap. To make "maple sugar", you just keep boiling the syrup until the liquid boils off and the sugar remains Or, you could make Birch Syrup. (Warning: utterly hilarious Canadian accent)

When bullets get rarer and more difficult to find, I am willing people won't pull shit like that so often. "Shooting to shoot" hrmph

I still would like to see slings in-game. One thing he does, at least in the "beginning", is he whips the sling around in a circle far too many times, and far too fast. By doing that, you are making it much more difficult to determine the point for proper release. He does it "right" when he slings it around once, at a slow pace, then whips his arm forward ( at around 6: 27). The increased length of the arc of throw means the stone will be moving faster, regardless of how fast you move it, so slinging it "slowly" means you have more control. Oh, and ammunition is already in the game, in the form of small stones, and as for damage, a golf-ball-sized stone could easily break ribs/arms/legs, and be slung from a pretty long distance. A fist-sized stone would pretty muck pulp your insides.
-
There are already bows in-game, I don't understand why someone would want to use an ostensibly less-"effective" weapon. Bows replaced atlatls in real life (in almost all cultures) pretty much after all the megafauna got killed off around the end of the last Ice Age. Atlatls are good at short-range javelin-throws at large game. Bows are good for long-range arrow shots on game of all sizes Not touching that making a bow and making an "effective" atlatl are basically the same "level" of complexity. The materials needed are basically the same, and in all seriousness, bows and arrows are actually easier to make: The shafts can be smaller, can have greater variances in weight and spine, and the heads don't have to be within percentages of the same weight. Plus, you can carry many more arrows than you can atlatl-darts, bows are easier to use, and can be effectively silenced. While I certainly wouldn't say they are "useless"..... I just can't see a reason to include atlatls when there are already bows.

Step 1) Don't try to make a camp on the outside edges of the map. Literally everyone and their mother thinks that is a good place. My clan and I have gotten geared up SOOOOOOO MANNNY TIMES from scrublets that think nobody will go out there. In reality, pretty much everyone who knows what's what will make a "map edge run" at least every couple of days. Standalone is not the Mod Instead: Step 2) Go to places where people have no reason to go. Load up the Day Z DB map. Take a gander at the region encompassed by Nadezhdino in the west, the Black Forest in the north, Topolka Dam in the south, and Tulga in the west. This is a mountainous, rugged, and heavily forested region of the map where there isn't really all that great of loot. I have spent 2 weeks, playing every day mind you, on a 50/50 server and I only saw about 5 people. Step 3) Keep on going to places where people have no reason to go. Hint: if you try to hide your stash by a building, or by a road, it will be found eventually. Inevitably, someone will think " hey, I wonder where that dirt road goes?", or " Hey, I know that nothing spawns in that house, but let me check for shits and giggles...." And they find your camp. The above is why I don't understand why people want to fortify pre-existing buildings instead of going into the hinterlands. "If you build it/ if there is a way there, they will come" applies. Instead, go to the end of that dirt road, then go off into the woods and over the hills. GO back far enough so that you can't be seen from the road, or from the nearest building, then stash your barrel in a tree, or set up a tent. I like to use streambeds as "highways" into the woods. Go off a road, follow a streambed up into the hills, then go off to the side along the ridge and set up camp. Step 4: Spread out Human-made objects tend to have angular shapes and colors that don't really exist in nature. This catches the eye because they stand out so much. Put up a tent, then move over 30 feet and put up another one behind some bushes. Set up tents away from barrels, and barrels away from cooking areas, and vehicles away from everything else. In "real life", you should really have ~200 feet between sleeping, working, cooking another areas in your camp. Keeps noise down, and makes you less likely to be bothered by animals (those on 4 legs and on 2)

If our opinion means nothing, then yours does as well. Quid pro quo. Day Z Standalone isn't "out for two years". It is still in the Alpha state. Day Z mod is a modification of a finished game. Jesus.

^ Sounds like Day Z standalone isn't the game for you. It is only going to get harder from here on out.

Uh, actually, bicycles are the most energy-efficient vehicles ever devised by man. For the same energy input required for walking, you can coast along at 20 mph. You can strap various baskets and containers on the frame for added storage space. Oh, and bikes are really easy to fix. Plus, they don't require various parts, fuels, lubricants, oils. Just some grease and pedal-power. You can make wheels from rope, carved wood, or cut-down tires. Chains can be improvised from rope or cords ( I've done it with a shoelace) https://www.exploratorium.edu/cycling/humanpower1.html Plus, you can hide a bike almost infinitely easier than you can a car. Hear some vehicle coming down the road? Ride off into the woods and stash the bike behind a tree. You can pick up and carry a bike if you need to, not to mention just push them everywhere. Not..... so much with a car. Also, no vehicle in the game will "protect you from bullets". All of the rifle calibers in the game will punch through the thin sheet metal siding of all of the games motor vehicles. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoBikesInTheApocalypse

Which is why I agree with you, and that there needs to be some sort of quiver for arrows.
-
Except ....... that isn't how arrows "work" Arrows are bladed weapons, not bullets. They don't turn flesh and bone and intestines to paste as they pass through. Instead, they cut a hole through the target. They kill through blood loss. However, with that in mind, broadhead arrows are as lethal as bullets, with proper shot placement. From about 2:35 in, you can see a deer shot in the "sweet spot" (aka in the chest, behind the front leg, where the heart, lungs and major blood vessels are). It runs maybe 100 yards, and drops dead after 30 seconds or so. You can still see it from the vantage point of the hunter.

Did ...... he just take a field point to the forehead? Or, did he get unlucky and get one through the eyesocket? ..... I want to make a "frontal lobotomy" joke, but I feel like it would be in poor taste.....
-
1) No, technically there is no "wrong" way to hold arrows. Whatever works for the individual archer is what is "right" for them 2) Cry more. This is a public forum, specifically on a thread related to archery. We are discussing archery. 3) Lars Anderson can reliably hit targets while moving, after practicing in sterile conditions, for that specific shot, for hours. He doesn't have to deal with vary wind speeds and direction, minor variances in form and stance, etc. His video, and skills demonstrated therein, is in no way conducive to "combat" (both combat and hunting) archery. Very similar to those "cowboy renactors" that can quickdraw and such. Visually impressive, but not all that special. As for the whole "reloading of bows" shtick, whether it is a bug or not, quivers should really just act like rifle "stripper clips". They hold ammunition, so it doesn't take up space in the inventory, and the ammunition can be reloaded with the "R" key.
-
He is an excellent trick shooter, don't get me wrong. Many of the shots he makes are pretty sweet. It is just when he tries to apply those same skills to actual "combat" archery is when my eyes roll out of my head and spin on the floor.
-
Did ... did you seriously just link to a video of Lars Anderson to demonstrate how "archery works in real life"? ..... HAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man. Asides from the fact that he is probably using a 35lb bow (which wouldn't kill a deer, much less a person, at least not quickly) as well as not fully drawing back the bow, something like 99% of his points are highly contentious. He is an amazing "trick shooter", but little more. I wouldn't rely on his skills in combat, at least not if I wanted to live. I make bows. I make arrows. In real-life archery, the nocking process in an integral part of the shooting stance. Sure, you can make it faster by holding arrows in the bow-hand, but you should still take your time, to ensure you maintain the proper form. When you shoot a rifle, you want to stand the same way, brace your body, hold the firearm, all in the same way, every time. Archery is the same. By moving quickly, you increase the chances of messing up.
-
Because that is how archery works in real life? Jesus

"Login Protection Period" of 10 seconds or until you move.
Whyherro123 replied to J.Dre's topic in Suggestions
There was a point in time, early in the Alpha, were as soon as you hit the "exit" button in the menu, your character would instantly disappear from the game world. Now, that lead to the abuse you could expect. Server-hoppers bouncing from server to server, people running around a corner and leaving combat in seconds. Snipers logging out as soon as someone got the drop on them, and even sometimes whenever someone fired back
