    So.... um WTH?

    Same thing happened to me today. I logged off safely last night, spawned in this afternoon after class. I had time to walk around, look in my inventory, and walk along a treeline for about 50m before, suddenly YOU ARE DEAD appeared. There was no zombie about, I had healthy status, and there was no player around me. This was the first time I have had to actually sit back, take several deep breaths, and remind myself "ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA" before I find somebody (anybody) and rip his balls off with the claw end of a hammer. 23 days alive, down the drain because of some shitty shit shit-tastic shit. "Never get attached to your gear" becomes rather difficult when I am attached to the character that holds the gear. We've been through a lot together, him and I. No longer. Sucks, dudebrah.

  3. In real life, you can go roughly 3 weeks without food before becoming incapacitated, so it seems like the current rate of starvation just a tad skewed...

    Zombies...What do you think?

    Why would it be realistic to need a headshot to kill a zombie? Besides being an absurd reference to the zombie mythos, it actually makes no sense. In Day Z, the zombies are little more than people infected by some disease. This doesn't make them any less susceptible to damage than the rest of us. If I shoot a zombie center-mass with a decent-power rifle or shotgun, I expect that bastard to go down.

    Believe it or not, not everyone has a brand-spanking new tablet/smartphone that wipes your ass for you as you play meaningless apps. : P I, for one, can't afford one.
  7. Yes, that is one thing I don't like. I've seen pumpkins and apples in-game, and presumable there would be some sort of grain growing in the numerous agricultural fields around Chernarus. I would like to be able to harvest said foodstuffs, so my character doesn't starve to death while staring at what must be, I don't know, the humongous apple orchard in Nizhnoye. Apparently we can't eat anything that isn't pre-packaged. : P

    Having a map doesn't really make the game any less challenging. Now, you know where loot CAN BE, but not if it is there, and you still have to get there in order to grab it. You can actually play the game, instead of wandering aimlessly around before starving to death.

    Fix The North West Airfield (Nwaf) [Civilianize]

    Realistically, based on it's proximity to Chernogorsk, the Balota airfield should be the large civilian airport, while the NWAF could be instead a true military base. Why would there be an International Airport literally miles away from any real population center? Infrastructure of such size needs a sizable staff, and no-one would really enjoy driving to their jobs 3 hours each way. Near where I live (Boston/Providence metropolitan corridor), both Logan and TF Green Airports are within 30 minutes of each capital city. Hell, even my home city of New Bedford has an airport, a civilian one (roughly Balota in size), and it is within the city limits!

    Do people seriously not use maps anymore? In my house, I have street maps for the major towns in my area, a USGS topo map for Massachsetts, then New England. In my actual backpack, I have trailmaps for all of the places I've recently gone hiking/camping. These maps are often topo maps as well, and they are free from the National/State Parks and Forests Ranger Office. The Scouts in my Troop know how to use a GPS, but they've never actually used one, as I beat map-and-compass skills into them since they first joined. Seriously, knowing how to use a map and compass could be a lifesaver in a wilderness survival situation, and the skills take all of 1/2 an hour to learn. Maybe a little more, if you want to know declination. Maps could even be useful even if you aren't lost. Block out gang territory on your map. Mark good hunting grounds. Look for, and use, the little dirt roads in East-Titty Bumfuck, so you can find your way about unseen and unheard.

    Blood Test Kits In Med Bags.

    Why would there be blood testing equipment in what looks like a commercially bought, first aid kit for the home/camping? I already dislike how there are saline bags and syringes in there. In all of the First Aid Kits I've ever bought, there never were any syringes. You need to be trained to buy them, IIRC. A First Aid Kit in SA should, in my humble opinion, include: 3 bandages 2 packs of painkillers 1 pack of charcoal tablets That is more in line with what is usually offered in a First Aid Kit commercially.

    Vehicles (Planning)

    I would like to see some diesel-powered engines, not just for the diesel, but more for the fact that they can run off of high proof alcohols with the proper filter. Yet another reason why moonshine will become a de-facto currency in the post-apocalypse. Seriously, I know a guy who built a motorcycle out of a regular bike, a diesel lawnmower engine, and about 30 gallons of whiskey a week. Thing can haul ass, too, though it chokes and bangs like a motherfucker.

    One major problem is the fact that most nights are unrealistically dark. Every summer, I work at a Scout camp that is easily 20=20 miles away from the closest town. When the Sun goes down, it gets DARK. However, I am only impaired for about 20 minutes, until my eyes adjust.

    Whatever you don't don't cover your face, it makes you look far more antagonistic than you would otherwise. There are several studies on the effects of "humanity" in combat, and soldiers interviewed stated that they hard a much harder time opening fire if they could see the face of their enemy. When the face is covered, you pretty much become "inhuman", and thusly, only an enemy.
  15. With regards to food and necessary nutrition, you would actually be surprised at how different your essential diet would be from your normal, everyday diet. You want to be eating foods high in fat and complex carbohydrates, to give you metric SHIT-TONS of energy, in order to stave off the aforementioned jump in metabolism. You also don't want to eat unless you have a decent supply of drinking water available, as the act of eating both takes water by itself (digestion) and kick-starts the metabolism, which in turn will deplete your bodies water supply.This means that the cereal you can eat in game would be next to useless, and could actually be harmful, as it provides little long-term energy, but takes a lot to eat (high in processed sugars, which spike the metabolism to crazy levels) This ties into cooking methods. You want to boil literally EVERYTHING, then drink the water you boiled the food in. Boiling causes the lowest "loss of nutrients", while roasting and baking causes the highest. Ideally, you want to eat food as raw as possible without making yourself sick.
  16. A good rule of thumb about wilderness survival, especially in a temperate environment, which I have the most experience with, is the so-called "Rule of Threes". Rather simple, you, in average shape and with everything you need to survive, can reasonably (dependent on weather and other factors) assume to only be able to go: 3 minutes without air 3 hours of exposure (to cold, water/damp clothing/heat, etc) 3 days without water 3 weeks without food before your body gives out. As you can clearly see, water is the limiting factor. In an actual survival situation, there is a series of priorities you should follow to have the best chance of survival. In my experience, I recommend: 1) Basic shelter 2) Fire 3) Improved shelter 4) More firewood ( this is a constant, so always need to think about it) 5) Improve shelter more 6) Drinking water 7 ) Improve shelter 8) Food
  17. Honestly, as someone well trained in Wilderness Survival, the actual act of survival should not be all that difficult in Chernarus. It looks to have a temperate climate, which would be moderated even further by the large body of water nearly (1/2) surrounding the landmass. So, unless the game is set in the winter months (which it most decidedly isn't. Early autumn would be my guess, mid autumn at the latest), body temperature management would not be of great concern, with ample shelter and insulation (clothing) available. This, in turn, frees up available kilocalories for metabolic processes rather than homeostasis management. TL:DR for the above statement = since the weather appears to be relatively warm, you would have more energy available for movement and other "stuff" rather than having to burn 6000 cal /day just to maintain your body temp. As for food, well, that is an issue. Your metabolism will spike to high rates during a survival situation, due to stress precipitating a "fight or flight" response whenever you are not sleeping, on top of the heavy exertion and other factors that would contribute. To remain healthy and "well fed" during such a situation, someone who ordinarily would require only 3000cal / day would instead require approximately 12000 - 15000 cal / day instead. I think the SA actually catches the proper eating habits of a survivor rather well ; you don;t want to eat large meals, as this weighs you down and requires large amounts of water and energy to digest. Instead, you want to want to eat many smaller meals. In-game, I eat whenever I do heavy exertion. I haven't been hungry in 3 days. Really, the limiting factor to long-term survival is the availability of potable water, not only for drinking, but for bathing and medical purposes. There is absolutely no reason for a pump to ever run out of water, with the exception of the aquifer being drained. The "pump" you see is pretty much a well going down deep into the water table, so it should not run out. To add some survival "fear" if you will, I would remove many of the pumps from around Chernarus. The country seems to be pretty well developed, so I would assume the citizens would spring for indoor plumbing whenever they could. This, of course, would have shut down when the grid went down, or ran out afterwards (municipal water treatment plants have only a few days of water stored, for precisely that reason. My city of 90,000 people has a 3 day supply of water if the grid goes down, all flowing through gravity/pressure differentials) Since a lot of people would have indoor running water, why have outside pumps? By limiting the availability of potable water, you create resources that people will either fight over, or team up to protect. Make it so you can take the pump handle off, maybe, to limit access, and require repair before use? Either way, removing the abundance of clean water will DEFINITELY make the game more "survival-oriented".

    Is less zombies actually more?

    I actually find the zombies far more frightening than players. I have a rather old laptop, which can't run the game that well. This means whenever I am outside and look at the horizon, my framerate drops to shit. This makes the game laggy as fuck, and I have a rather hard time handling more than one zombie at a time. On the other hand, I usually encounter players inside of buildings, where my framerate is much better. This makes axing them to death much easier, especially when they can't draw their guns fast enough : P Plus, the visual range of the zombies is utterly horrifying at time. I was travelling to Pavlovo one time, when I made the mistake of standing up on the hill above the town. All I see is all of the zombies in town slowly turn, STARE AT ME for like 10 seconds, then start booking it towards me. I think I pissed myself a little at that.

I refer to them as "kids" because even if they are not children, they (in my entirely anecdotal experience), they tend to have a very similar mindset; need for instant gratification, pathological avoidance of boredom, juvenile trash-talking, etc. Let this be said: I, personally, have no issue with PVP. It is an integral part of the game. However, I realize, with much "ironic" hilarity, that if there were a similar scenario IRL, the KOS-crew would either be crying in the corner, or strung up from a lamppost somewhere, while the "carebears" would be sitting on a pleasant little farm with a bunch of like-minded, companions, aimed at living, not simply surviving, as long as they can.
  21. If anything, there should be added a carpenters hammer as an improvised weapon eventually. Think about it: a tool that would be absolutely everywhere, with many varied uses, and capable of some pretty serious wounds. I've personally stove in the head of a freshly-slaughtered pig with one, and even if you don't hit in the head, you would still cause serious tissue damage/broken bones. In all seriousness, the melee system needs to be revamped. One hit with a shovel should put someone out of commission, not 5+. CQC should be brutally difficult, but also brutally effective.

    Chernarus is far from a "Third-World" country. From what we can see, the country had regular and reliable electricity, effective public infrastructure, organized government, etc. Just because the houses have what look to be wood stoves does not mean the country is any less developed than the West. Hell, I live in one of the largest Megalopolis's in the world (Boston to NYC, NYC to DC, DC to Chicago, all of it is mostly city or suburb) and people still use wood stoves to provide heat.

    Spawn sites (Electro?)

    I just got knocked out (read:killed) by a rabid punching bambi outside of the firehouse in Electro. I met the kid not 5 minutes before at the grocery store, where he tried the same thing, only to feel the edge of my axe. Now, I AM NOT COMPLAINING THAT I DIED,OR LOST MY GEAR , all I want to know is if there is a spawn still in Electro, cause otherwise there was no game-legal way he could have caught up to me that fast (literally within 3 minutes) I was under the understanding that the spawns were all on the east side of the map now?
  24. Don't forget, everyone and their mother will be rushing to Canada/Alaska as fast as their starving feet will carry them. You are actually better off hiding, waiting out the "Great Northern Rush" and occupying then farming the territory left behind.
  25. In all seriousness, it really depends on the level of the collapse of civilization. Of course, you all are probably referring to the "utter-and-total collapse of Western Society" that, in actuality, is almost impossible. Nations are so large, and there are so many of them, that they can (and would, international pissing contests nonwithstanding) "bolster each other", preventing a total collapse of society. For example, look at the level of response to the 9/11 attacks, or the Haiti/Japan disaster: pretty much the entire world stood up and held out a hand in a gigantic Crowning Moment of Heartwarming. However, let us have a little fun with this I have already made several posts about how a generalized "breakdown of society" would happen; pretty much three stages. 1) Collapse 2)Stabilization 3) Rebuilding in the event of a total collapse, the majority of Western nations would suffer a major population dieoff. After those months of starving, civilization would actually return slowly, but definitely not in fashion we would recognize. Technology would be diminished, with an estimated tech level similar to the 1700s (blackpowder firearms, sailing/steam ships, localized industry driven by water/steam, etc), with certain tech ranging up to the late 1800's (limited metallic cartridges, electricity production, telegraph communications, etc) AT BEST
