Once separate hives arrive then you could have a different character on each one?
-
'Pretty much' fully geared isn't enough for the 1337 pvpers. They all need pristine ACOGs on their M4s or pristine LR scopes on their mosins... probably all want a pistol as well just so they feel uber. I'm still waiting to find my ACOG, traipsing around with fingers crossed but notching up defensive kills with the basic carryhandle sight :)

Should I invest my time in 1st Person Servers?
floj replied to crazyandlazy's topic in General Discussion
For me I'm only continuing this discussion because I don't like the playerbase to be fractured. In an ideal world, TPV will be setup so that line of sight works the same way it does for FPV (frustum culling apparently ^^) and no-one has an advantage over each other so we can all play together. But as I mentioned a few posts ago, this will look very disjointed for the TPV players since your avatar will be able to see things that will be obscured by objects from the cameras point of view AND vice versa. f.e. Imagine watching someone running through some trees from TPV with this implemented. Everytime he passes behind a tree - in respect to the POV of your character - he'll disappear and then reappear a fraction of a second later. Then he'll still be *visible* but will be behind the same tree from the cameras POV, so in effect it'll double the time he's hidden by each tree as well as making his model flick in and out of vision. This will look pretty horrible and will probably result in most players moving to FPV and/or probably complaining about how it's now the FPV players that have the unfair advantage :) So it's either separate hives with one of them offering an unreal perspective, a screwy TPV or just have everyone playing FPV and getting used to it. Of those three options, I'd go with the third since it needs 0 devtime, keeps the playerbase together and is realistic and as I already mentioned, makes the game much more immersive. -
Personally I'd say the base near Pavlovo. It's not as open as the others so you have a decent chance of hiding/escaping if someone arrives in the vicinity. The airfields are wide open so all it takes is a sniper in one of the towers to spot you and you're toast. Also there's a hospital in that same base, so kills two birds with one stone if your lucky :)

An Issue with the New Spawns AKA "The Kamyshovo Massacre"
floj replied to wgaf's topic in General Discussion
I'm still sat on most of the 100 odd rounds from the airbase I visited about 10 hours ago in game time. Had a few battles since then all around the map, 1 vs 1, 1 vs many, also evaded some larger groups stalking the coast and ran into an aggressive axe man. It's quite satisfying winning proper battles against difficult odds, if I could be bothered I might server hop around Kamyshovo and see if I can take out some of the clowns who wrote this thread, it's getting boring having nothing to aspire to in terms of new loot :) -

Yeah I disagree with FPV being called elite/hardcore mode or whatever, it's probably the cause of most of the disagreement between the different playersets. The likelihood of pvp is actually diminished and more easily avoidable due to people not being able to cheat the rules of physics... so in a way, it's easier... I'd just call it first person or realism mode. Loot spawns need to be balanced, zombies need to be balanced etc etc then it'll be proper surviving, that's the same for both versions though. -
NE used to be safer until the recent patch, you'll now have a bunch of fresh spawns en-route to NEAF so I wouldn't log out in towns around that area... in fact although I suggested logging off in the shacks, personally I very rarely log out in towns at all. Any town is gonna be more of a risk for you to log in at when there's the option to log into a completely invisible place between two trees (and these spots are EVERYWHERE). It's a question of probabilities and the major distribution of players will be airfields > towns > wilderness. The other issue is that if someone logs in within earshot, it's a surprise/worrying moment for the player. Have they been ghosted? Is the guy armed? Does he have allies already in the server or logging in after him? You didn't mention what kinda loadout you had, but if I saw someone logging in and they had a gun, I'd probably be quite panicky as well.
-
Sawlstone, how can you not understand that there are good places and bad places to log out? Bad spot to log out - near player hotspots (airfields/spawn areas), out of cover or in popular buildings (hospitals/barracks/school/fire station). Good place to log out - buried in between two fir trees where you can't even be seen when you log back in. Or if in a town, in one of the empty shacks around the back of numerous buildings...

Don't log out in an open area? Log out in one of the shacks or in the bushes.

Just got back from my first foray on a pure FPV server and I need a new pair of pants. I'd logged off on the outskirts of Balota airbase in quite an exposed location after helping some friends resupply last night. If I'd been in TPV I coulda just checked each corners without exposing myself and been in the woods in about 5minutes...As it was, with a hungover head I slowly eeked my way from house to house, using the lean function to check each new corner, pausing after every sprint and listening for pursuers, entering houses, closing the doors behind me and peeking out of windows to check the different approaches - a ball of tension in my belly the whole way (fully kitted out character so if I lost him it's gonna be a few hours to rekit up). 30 minutes later I was in the woods. I hadn't seen anyone but I'd been bricking it the whole way and I was still bricking it for the next hour of wandering around restocking my food supplies. Every crest of a hill, every little piece of cover becomes a thousand times more important when you haven't been able to look over it from a concealed position beforehand. THAT is why you should play FPV. -

Boohoo, we want our Balota spawn camping back so we dont have to move to get more bullets to kill unarmed Bambi's and stroke our tiny e-peens. Let's make a forum thread about it, with pictures and a story from first grade YAY. -
Fill up your belly, then wait about an hour or so - sucks I know :( Or you can try the medic guys from one of the other forum threads, they'll come patch you up with saline or blood :)

I do wonder if they'll patch the game so that in TPV you can still only see what's actually in your line of sight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4iMO9BpGkQ It'd be really trippy and distracting to see people flashing in and out of visibility as they run through the trees next to you and would actually be a huge disadvantage for the TPV players if implemented like this, I wonder how many of them would use this view still. EDIT: Added Project Zomboid footage to show how TPV *could* be implemented, pretty sure most players would instantly switch to FPV if they did this because it'd be sooo confusing with occlusion caused by terrain and physical features on the map - maybe even members of your own squad would block LOS too xD -
I much prefer having the contour lines available from the map I use - also as I say, my net is only 1mbit, it takes me about 2minutes to reload that map everytime I zoom in or out which when I'm alt tabbed out of the game could be the difference between a death or not whilst getting my bearings. I already know where the military base is nr Pavlovo (and actually have the western part of the map in the game to use) - so it's not a huge biggy for me to not have that on the out of game map.

Omniscience of your surroundings in an authentic survival game = feature? ...or just something that hasn't been patched out of the alpha yet? -

Thank god - I have seen threads mentioning a similar idea before though, someone suggested a military NPC controlled camp (ala Concord) for risk-free trading or somesuch - it got pissed on by everyone tho :) -
The only solution for DayZ: Simulation.

This could be ameliorated by having specialists at the start and working in a group - one of you spawn as a medic, one of you spawn as a mechanic. BAM job done without having to find the books. The books could be a way for solo survivors (who probably want to take more than an hour to reach the endgame anyways) to skill up on their own without risking player interaction with strangers EDIT: Just had to quickly find the thread http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/158954-the-value-of-a-character/ Basically merge the ideas from that one and this one together = win? -
Same problem here and similar net connection to bummel - 1mbit download about 40kb up. Was having 30+ second delays when sharing items with friends but have had no problems at all in the firefights I've had - hit detection and enemy movements seemed fine so it's something inventory based imo.

As I said in my first reply, I prefer the immersion of playing FPV. have done since the days of playing Thief in the early 90s. As I also said in a later post, I still play CS and Quake when I want PvP - because it beats trekking around for hours just to find a target... BUT there is PvP in the game and - similarly to Eve Online - even when playing a carebear style you HAVE to be aware of the PvP elements because you can still be attacked at anytime and anywhere. So I personally don't aggress in this survival game but I had to watch out that there could be hidden attackers around pretty much every corner watching my move... fortunately that's now over for me with the new FPV servers, if I can't see that guy camping on the roof, he can't see me. -

^^ Apologies, I was about 4 bottles of wine down when I was writing last night note to self: must not visit forums after NYE celebrations lol The thing I disagree with is that you want all this added depth, which is great, I think everyone wants that BUT then you counter that by suggesting that every single survivor can do anything in the game just by reading a wiki. I think there should be base skills, acquired skills and specialist skills decided at spawn. Then you have to level up both your gear and your skillsets throughout the game, the skills being learned either by finding books or by meeting an avatar that already has the skill :) -
I've had one shot kills with the baseball bat when sprinting up behind a stationary zed and whacking him in the head. Wrench seems to take at least two hits.

I lost you when you said 'surgery isn't a skill' Sorry but...really? OK, so because the game has already simplified surgery, vehicle mechanics and beyond, someone just has to learn a simple ABC for each task and they're automatically able to perform any feat under the sun? Unless it requires you to learn absolutely everything necessary to a real life degree, I see absolutely NO reason that your character should be able to perform such deeds just because you've learned a simple order of commands to do so. Sterilise your tools before an operation...is that it with your consideration of what medical procedures entail? What about find out which organ(s) might be affected, check out which veins, arterys and major organs are in the vicinity of the area you're about to dig sharp needles into? Possibly consider any allergies of the patient before administering antibiotics? Jesus, are you master of the world because you learned an ABC of operations from a video game? If that's the case I'm inclined to suggest rocket veto continuation in case you decide to become a brain surgeon based on what you learned here... Really... there's a LOT more to flying a helicopter than the takeoff procedure. There's a lot more to performing an operation than disinfecting your tools before you start. If you want simulation, I want you to learn all the shit a surgeon has to actually learn and all the shit a heli pilot has to know to avoid going into a spiral of doom... Please if the zombie apocalypse happens, don't perform surgery on me or anyone I know and don't fly an aircraft within 100km of me.
