Temperature effects are broken since hotfix
doctorbadsign replied to ColonelBurton's topic in General Discussion
I think it does need work. The biggest change I want to see is running causing you to warm up. If you're in a t-shirt and you sprint as much as we do in DayZ you're going to end up warm, despite burning loads of calories. I do find it odd that I am getting cold with a wool coat on and a hat etc. when its not even raining. In fact wool is unique in that it retains its warmth even when wet, so you shouldn't really get cold wearing wool even if it is wet. -
That zombie is cool... I want more variety of players to choose from though! People that look more survivorish

I don't think they should fix it, you should die of smoke inhalation and burn the house down if you start a fire inside.

I have confirmation from Rocket that it was done specifically to annoy you

Playing the game wrong? Lol. I'm not saying anyone is playing the game wrong. However the scope of what DayZ could become is limited because no one wants to communicate or cooperate with new people. Things like getting a group together with the aim of making a town safe for players on a server. I'd love to do that, but anyone I meet would kill me before I get to suggest it. The pvp element should never be removed, however I do wish players would expand their scope about what is possible in DayZ, even if it is just a tiny bit. The fact that DayZ will always be limited in scope because the majority of the player base do not wish to engage with other players and try out new things is the fault of the community, and it is a tragedy because the possibilities as far as what this game might have to offer are vast, yet people will insist upon limiting them to staying a certain way because they only want to engage with others in a certain way. Those who are open to the possibilities just get shot by everyone else.

To expand upon my thoughts, I really like how it makes you think about your clothing choice as a fresh spawn. I never used to pick up a bright orange or yellow raincoat but now I do. I hope more depth is added so that our inventory considerations require more than just food and ammo. We should have to carry spare clothes in case we get too hot or too cold. I think the more features that require us to consider our inventory in much greater detail, taking into account more factors the better. It feels like the first steps that will hopefully result in a game where the people with the most effective kit that accounts for all factors will survive, not just the elite dudes who loot military zones on low pop servers and have mostly ammo in their inventory.

I like it. The only thing that should be changed is that running should warm you up (but still increasing the loss of food).

Lol welcome to DayZ, the game that could be the best and most interesting experience ever in gaming if not for it's shitty community

I hear something about a hotfix for server crashes so that might be out today.

Is anyone else having this melee/getting your drink out bug? I've died due to it about 5 times now. Generally what happens is you are swarmed by zombies, trying to kill them and then you randomly get a drink out...

I see your perspective, and perhaps I just have high hopes for the game, but I think it would be really cool if fuel became some kind of economy. Something that would not work without easy access to cars. I definitely think that at least they should try to encourage trading and the development of economies. I think by having the other player's hands in the vicinity section as a means for a trading system would be awesome. Unfortunately this would require a bit of an attitude change from players, that we may never see. Unless of course fuel was stored in Jerry cans that could be pierced by bullets, in which case shooting someone would be a risk that might lose you valuable fuel.

Aside from the obvious performance reasons. I can't see any logical reason why there would only be a few cars in a server. There are hundreds of cars even in small towns. If 95% of the population were to die in some kind of plague I can see no reason why they would mostly stop working all together. Some might need repairs, but its not like a massive flood or tsunami has wrecked everything. I think fuel should be the limiting factor. One can imagine fuel would run out in this kind of scenario. In essence I think lots of cars would actually make sense, but with not much fuel.

I can't get on with the "improved" melee system. I was stabbing a zombie in the head over and over again with a pitchfork like it was a pin cushion and it just wouldn't go down. Then I randomly got a drink out despite not having pressed any of the hot keys... On the plus side though I did punch out a douchebag who came up and attacked me without saying hello..
-
I agree. Melee is utter shite, I don't think it's going to get much better really. It's been "improved" several times now. I died to zombies after getting them with repeated headshots with a pitchfork today. Not even three hits did it. To add insult to injury I randomly got a drink out without having pressed the hot key for it. I think it needs to be a lot smoother in order for it to work in any meaningful sense. If you think about melee in other games, it tends not to be just one animation at the same angle. There will often be a few animations that flow together nicely so that your attacks feel continuous and rapid. I'm not sure whether there is scope for this in DayZ but I really hope so, because melee has been shit and is still shit despite so called improvements.

"Other Player Near" messages suggestion
doctorbadsign replied to Cliff_beefkake's topic in Suggestions
I'm not trying to be funny but its easy to tell if someone is near. If you don't take the time to look for the signs you don't deserve to know someone is there. Even if there are no obvious signs you know the kinds of areas that it is likely to encounter someone, so you can always be vigilant. You can also suss pretty easily when someone is untrustworthy. Asking you to go somewhere is one sign. Trying to get you to do something that would make you drop your guard. Long periods of silence during conversation. All of these things indicate that you shouldn't trust them. I don't think the game needs to compensate for the ineptitude of players when it comes to being vigilant and picking up on these signs. -
Considering the stupidity of some of the DayZ player base, I'd say that not being able to eat and walk at the same time is pretty apt ;)

The "ruined" status must go.
doctorbadsign replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I think it does need tweaking. For example the rags scenario. Rags are by definition kinda ruined bits of cloth, it doesn't make much sense for them to become unusable unless they become dirty and unsanitary, but they should still be usable in that instance, just with a risk of infection. -
Servers restarting far too often.. sometimes 2-3 times in an hour ?
doctorbadsign replied to Irish.'s topic in General Discussion
Server restarts are the absolute fucking bane of DayZ. I hate them. They invariably seem to come just at the moment when I am getting really into the game, but the cause me to think 'oh for fucks sake' and exit out because they are so annoying. They really need to work towards absolute minimal restarts because they are without contest the most annoying and frustrating thing about DayZ. I hope they do get rid of them before the game is finished. -
How can the community help youtubers/streamers?
doctorbadsign replied to hiniberus's topic in General Discussion
Maybe an events subforum would be a good platform for people to promote ideas and get togethers? -
They definitely need to add something that makes the permadeath hit harder. I'd say some kind of character progression that doesn't unbalance the game (so no 'bullets do twice as much damage' perks or anything). Just subtle things like getting more proficient at crafting etc. If this were wiped when you died then you would have lost hours of work that you couldn't just reclaim by killing a geared fella.

Should Rocket go sooner rather than later?
doctorbadsign replied to banjo (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I don't think he should go sooner rather than later. Sure he has his flaws, which are mostly to do with how he presents information to the community (although the negative response I can't help but feel is often mostly our fault not his). But DayZ is his vision, and I think ultimately we benefit from his input. The main thing is that he is an inspiration. If one young modder out there looks to him and sees an opportunity to make something of their hobby then that is great, we need more people like him in the games industry. People who succeed at doing something a bit different off their own back. Despite my often having to cringe due to him putting his foot in his mouth, I like Rocket, and I think he should stay until his creative influence is no longer necessary. -
Nah, gore cheap. What the game does need is atmosphere. Even something as simple as the sound of crows in the background would do this.
-
I think it is a good thing to be honest. Sniping is not something that involves just pointing a crosshair at a target and killing it instantly. It requires practise and training. I'd say the sway is an approximation of the fact that people in DayZ are not elite snipers. I don't think point and click sniping is realistic or authentic.
-
They'd have to change a lot about the game to make it consistent with that aesthetic. You're not going to be finding as much loot. If you think about it, even after a few months you're gonna start having a hard time finding stuff, after long enough for nature to reclaim everything, you're going to be on the verge of starvation every day unless you get lucky or are good at hunting. Most likely all the guns will be gone as people will raid all the common places such as military bases. The gameplay as things stand is consistent with a world that is only days after a catastrophe.

Flint and steel could be good too. Maybe have tinder as an in game item that each has a different chance of catching light depending on its condition and so on. You could have an option to peel bark off a birch tree or pine resin and so on. You could find the flint and strike a spark of a knife or axe head etc.
