What are your self imposed rules and regulations when playing?
doctorbadsign replied to serenityrick's topic in General Discussion
I do not combat log, no matter how shitty the person is attacking me, even if I'm a fresh spawn and they're hacking at me with an axe like a douche I take it and die like a man. I do not server hop unless the server crashes or something similar. Hopping for loot or to escape zombies is for the weak. I do not kill fresh spawns or anyone who is not a threat to me. -
Possible solution to KOS, hear me out
doctorbadsign replied to jan3sobieski's topic in New Player Discussion
No. How does this have any basis in reality? Dying because you have killed someone? Fuck that. How does it distinguish between self defence/aggression anyway? So you're basically saying the game should hold the hands of people who are shit at it? Again, fuck that. If you're good at the game you'll know whether bandits are roaming the area or not. If you don't then you shouldn't get any help with the situation, you should fight or die like a man. There doesn't need to be a karma system of any kind. But frankly your suggestion is ridiculous. -
Best Dayz kill to date. The tale of the good samiritan and his untimely end

Why make it harder? You could also make it beneficial for people to use it -
Removing chat function sucks for deaff players
doctorbadsign replied to redfirm's topic in General Discussion
I agree that there should be a solution for deaf players. Global chat is not the way forward at all, not just because everyone finds it annoying, but it would also put said players at a disadvantage. The kind of communication the OP is talking about, I assume is the kind of communication non-deaf people use TS for. Broadcasting tactical information, details of location and stuff to all people on the server is making huge bait out of yourself. Has anyone checked to see if there is any software out there that would do the trick? -
Rocket said : Cannibalism will be eventually part of the game
doctorbadsign replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
I agree, but one would have to be careful to make sure that it is a last resort. I.e: you'd rather eat that rotten orange than kill a new spawn. If it does not affect you adversely the game will be broken completely by it's addition. -

doctorbadsign replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
Given that cannibalism is known to cause disease, it should come at a cost to the player. Perhaps not a definite risk, but a risk of sickness should be there. If not, it would just give people an actual reason to camp out and kill new spawns. -
There are a motherload of topics about this...

I think they should add NPC helicopters that kill everyone who kills on sight. [i am kidding of course]

when did being friendly become bieng a sucker
doctorbadsign replied to gannon46's topic in General Discussion
I think its all about being friendly, but having no trust to begin with. What do I mean by that? Is that not a contradiction? Well what I mean is, help people out, but do so with them restrained, whilst looking at them down the barrel of a gun. If they are compliant and come across as trustworthy then you can begin to let your guard down (a little bit). -
No there should not be a pre-defined back-story. Firstly because everyone here would argue for days on end in about 67 different topics about what they don't like about it. Then you'd have another 4 topics for each of the 67 moaning about people moaning about the story... Secondly because if you had just gone through an end of the world type scenario, you're not really going to know what has gone on. The news is down, most of the people you'd share gossip with are now flesh eating monsters and the rest are going to shoot you in the back for your beans. If there is any kind of back story it needs to be extremely fragmentary and open to interpretation and contradiction, spread via player interaction. There should be no page on the DayZ website or blurb on the Steam page. EDIT: Okay so I should have read more of the post than the title and question... I understood it to mean back-story to the events in Chernarus... I shall leave the above anyway. I think having a back-story is cool for your character and I'd definitely like to see this implemented in RP servers. If everyone did it though you'd just get people coming up with stupid stuff. But then if that did not affect my gaming experience at all then fair enough.

I don't think it should be everywhere. Everywhere would make less impact. But if it was something you stumbled on very occasionally some apocalyptic gore might be very effective. Imagine finding a random group of broken/weathered tents in the woods, one containing a child's bed covered in blood... With the parents hanging from a tree nearby... That is a bit dark, but finding stuff like that very rarely would have a huge impact, whereas if it was all over the place it would just be a part of the background.

Yes and how cool would it be to be able to craft a tracking device from a gps? -
How do you deal with other players?
doctorbadsign replied to SploogeMcDuck's topic in General Discussion
To be honest dude, you were at an airfield. You should have killed the guy despite him saying he was friendly. And you definitely shouldn't have stood around waiting for them to shoot you in the face. I tend to be friendly most of the time. If you're armed though and a threat to me, I'll kill you if I can. I know some friendlies might get shot this way, but the risk is too high. -
DayZ is FailZ (Lacklustre Infected comment)
doctorbadsign replied to Spidey (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
I think this would actually make a good mod when DayZ becomes available to the community. Get rid of zombies. Have a higher number of players or if that isn't possible a smaller map to increase likelihood of player encounters. Have loot much more scarce to increase what players are willing to do to get it. Add the ability to cook and eat the flesh of dead players. -
Server hopping is killing this game FAST
doctorbadsign replied to phoboss's topic in General Discussion
They managed it in one of the mods, I think it was DayZero. If you wanted to combat log, you'd get a 'you cannot log out near another player' and it literally wasn't possible to click Abort. I'm not sure how to combat server hopping other than tying our characters to each server. Personally I preferred using private hives in the mod cause it allowed me several characters. -
Yep. For me the game would be shit without the risk that other players would pose.
-
True, but any simulation has its limits, and there is no way to get other players to conform to how you want them to play. You can make things harder and more inconvenient for them, but you can never stop them. Just wait for RP servers to come out, I'm sure you'd be perfectly happy on one of those. Also my interactions in game have mostly been non-hostile. I think this idea that everyone will shoot you for fun is a total exaggeration. Mostly when I've been shot, I've been a threat to the other person, so I have to hand it to them that they shot me before I had a chance to react. Yeah I've met some twats with melee weapons that wanted to attack me, but mostly that hasn't ended well for them. A high percentage of player I've met have spoken to me, and asked me if I was armed etc. before reacting.

I was merely expressing why people disagree. Person 1 thinks there is a problem with X and assumes something should be done about it Person 2 doesn't think so therefore does not want anything done to fix a problem that does not in their eyes exist. Hence person 1 & 2 do not agree Its got nothing to do with the game being in alpha. Its to do with whether or not KOS should be treated as a problem to be solved. Personally I do not think it should be viewed as such. I am of course open to hear arguments from the other side, but so far they don't really amount to much other than 'I don't like it, make it go away'.
-
You make the assumption that there is a problem to begin with. I think the main point of contention is that other people do not agree that there is a problem that needs fixing. You assume that because players kill you for fun, or for no reason, there is a problem because you do not want this to happen to you. Others would say this is your problem, not the a problem with how the game works.

It might have that moral depth for the person doing the killing, but not for me playing against those people. I attempt to avoid killing other players on sight, because I am a principled person, so I try to translate this into how I play the game. However I am aware that in the world of DayZ there are people with no principles who will kill me, meaning that I am forced to make decisions that contradict my principles in order to survive. I probably have shot friendly players because they seemed like a threat to me, and it makes me feel guilty and I question my actions afterwards. Some people wouldn't, but then some people wouldn't in real life. It adds moral depth for me as a player.
-
How do you get rid of someone killing on sight for fun. Any measures taken in that direction will make people want to do it more. That's the way it is. Just accept it as part of the game. Again it still adds moral depth to the game. "Be careful out there, there are crazy folks who will kill you just for fun...." Part of surviving involves shooting people. Why else are there guns in the game. Don't get me wrong, I rarely KoS unless I cannot avoid it. However the simple risk of getting shot randomly increases the tension of the game as a whole and of any interactions that I do have. People kill to survive in desperate situations, players killing players is all part of survival. Sure there is more to the game (hence why it is not advertised as a shooter), but to deny that it is an integral part would be folly.
-
Why does KoS detract from the experience and immersion of DayZ? As I've said, it adds a whole moral dimension to the game. Imagine living in a society that has crumbled to the point where people will kill you for fun. This adds a level of drama to the experience, and to the moral dilemma of being someone with principles, trapped in a world without them and forced to compromise their morals in order to survive. This is what makes DayZ, it shouldn't be about holding hands and dancing around the camp fire with flowers and bunnies. There is so much depth to the experience of DayZ and KoS is a huge part of that. It has forced me into positions where I've had to kill people when I don't want to etc. Just like the kinds of moral drama you'd get in real life. Quit whining about it just because you lost your gear or someone attacked you as a fresh spawn. Think about the moral depth that it creates.

My advice would be; be patient and observant. Also set your default character to be wearing beige/green.

Also set video memory to 'default'

*Sees person armed with a baseball bat* *Puts axe away* Me: Hello *Player proceeds to walk up to me, beating me with said baseball bat* *Casually takes axe out again, and starts chopping at them* *Player logs out* Sigh. This kind of shit is always going to happen in DayZ
