The biggest reason I'd pick an AK over a military-grade rifle (in a real situation) is because I don't have formal military training or any familiarization with military grade equipment. I know how to clean a rifle and I use common sense when it comes to gun safety, but other than that, I'm pretty ignorant. I don't need an accurate rifle that can nail a quarter from 2 football fields over, because more than likely, I'm not going to know how to use it. What I need is a rifle that won't jam up when I'm wading through a sewer tunnel fleeing from infected or a sandstorm, or whatever the case may be. If I need to kill a zombie, I'd rather not shoot it, rather take it down quietly. (which I use my axe more often than anything.)
-
The AK is a real workhorse. It'd probably be my first choice of rifle in the apocalypse. I need a weapon that can be dragged through mud, rain, sand, and dirt. Those are likely the environments you're going to be moving through while fleeing hordes. Damn right. I keep a scope but hold it in my backpack until I'm hunting. The stock AK with no attachments, 30-round mags, and plain wood finish is just gorgeous.

Again, I'm not saying that military loot shouldn't exist or that there shouldn't be a wide variety, I'm saying the VOLUME of mil-gear is too high. Especially when all we can really do right now is loot, hunt, and fish. Looting any military base with multiple buildings will quite commonly yield plenty of vests, rifles, a handful of attachments, magazines if you're lucky, and enough clothes/armor to outfit a small squad. (higher cap clothes like the TTSKO and Special Forces, cargos, etc...) What're the first things people tend to loot in zombie apocalypse movies? supermarkets, gun stores, police stations, banks, military bases. It stands to reason that (judging by the state of the buildings (conservatively)) after several months of the apocalypse have passed, these places would have been picked clean of combat gear. I DIGRESS- stronger bow yes compound bow? I'm warming up to the idea, but I still don't want to see laser sights, ridiculous scopes, or explosive arrows, personally.
-
sounds like an oxymoron. But seriously, I get what you're all saying. having a pre-fab bow that's more powerful than a stick and a shoelace. What about a sleek fiberglass recurve bow?

Has DayZ ever gotten you in real world trouble?
nettles replied to trimpampano's topic in General Discussion
I poke my head around corners before I walk around them. It gets strange looks, but at least I don't bump into people at the supermarket. -
I'm not arguing that military items shouldn't exist, I'm saying there's TOO MUCH military stuff. I'd love to see more civilian attachments. Like duct-taping a flashlight to a rifle, but it makes it harder to move than using a weapon flashlight, or taping a knife to an ashwood stick to make a spear. weapon flashlights and RDS systems should be the ultra-rare endgame stuff. but again, my point is, I don't want to see an assault bow with explosive arrows and full auto mode.
-
To get back to the topic at hand, I would be willing to compromise to see a fiberglass longbow or some sort of sport bow. But an absolute MUST for this game is to be able to craft your own arrows.

There's also tons of military vests and body armor, a couple different kinds of combat knives, and hecka attachments for guns. I don't mind a couple cool gadgets, but over-the-top military gear should be a lot more rare than it is. Nearly every player I've come across has been wearing a gas mask and a high capacity vest with a fully modded assault rifle or mosin with a compensator, bipod, and scope. I mean, modding an AK to LMG status with a drum mag and bipod is just silly.

If you're talking about the Veresnik outpost, on your map it is grid point 045 070. If you need a more general direction, it's between Kabanino and Vybor. If you still can't find it beyond that, I... truly don't know what to tell you. http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus#5.042.071

This game has a crossbow. What more do you need? There's already too much tacticool looking stuff in the game right now. We don't need bows with scopes and laser sights.

In my experience, when you punch or whomp a zombie's noodle while he's down, he will die when the final damage is done, meaning if he's still prone or in the middle of getting up, it'll play its death animation.

in the Fraps program go to the 'Movies' tab. you can set it to lock at certain framerates. Do you have it set to something low? The lower you lock the framerate, the choppier it'll look. If the framerate is low though, recordings will take less space on your drive.

Not everyone loot farms military areas, so not everyone will have access to a pocketful of magazines. I'd like to see guns spawn in variable conditions with a possibility of being partially loaded with magazines in varying condition. As it stands, all guns spawn in pristine condition, leaving the gun-cleaning kit useless unless you get whomped on. So basically, it'd be nice to see more randomness.

It's a game about both, but the focus is survival. They're trying to cut back the PvP element. That's why they introduced the raise/lower your weapon button and why all your gear is ruined when you take half a mag of M4 to the noodle. Player interactions don't just involve shooting each other (though I know from the limited scope of your video you don't quite seem to grasp that concept), they also include performing first aid and feeding someone who can't eat for themselves (I.E. if they're passed out and too hungry to regenerate health). Of course, to little kids who just sit around and loot farm all day, weapons and shooting are really all that matters anyway.

I want to practice some sniping with my SKS... any ideas?
nettles replied to Irish.'s topic in General Discussion
I recommend you find a relatively empty server and hike up rocky cliff to the north of Svetlojarsk. You can look into town and see zombies at a lot of different ranges. If you're using the PU sight system you can zero it using the PgUp and PgDn keys. It's important to guestimate or use a map to work out distances before you take a shot. Take lots of ammo. If you're prone, make sure your gun clears the rocks or your bullet will clip into it. -
Unfortunately a lot of little kids grew up with CoD and Battlefield and end up making videos like this. Equally unfortunately, these are the kinds of videos that show up on YouTube when someone wants to learn more about DayZ and whether or not they should buy it. "Retrospective Montage" sounds like a video that would detail changes to the actual build of DayZ and testing features but really you're just spraying lead through the whole video to some crappy music. Not once did I see picking berries, fishing, hunting animals, crafting, or any of the features that've made it into the alpha. Well I personally didn't click on your video expecting to see poor marksmanship and some kid in a gas mask shooting unarmed players. MLG status PvP. The name of the video does not reflect the content.

Hahaha, you both took so much lead. At least no one died.

Sounds like someone was talking shit.

Possible 3rd person exploit "fix" suggestion
nettles replied to TEST_SUBJECT_83's topic in Suggestions
I like to think of third person as a metaphor. when you're playing in first person you have to stick your whole head, some of your shoulder, and like, half of your torso to get a peek around. the third person 'exploit' is really more like you just poking enough of you around to see. Alternatively, an idea for a fix might be, whenever you're close to cover in 3rd person, your character automatically sticks his head around it unless you press a button not to. But that would be kinda sticky. -
I'm down for the 10-minute penalty idea. Maybe there could be a couple of servers set aside for people who want to play PERMAdeath DayZ where when you're killed by zombies or players or an unfortunate accident, you're not allowed to rejoin until the next restart. Also, a possible solution to self-looting might be that your own corpse is only visible for everyone but you.
-
If that's the case, then how is this a "Cool Story of Morality"? What to you makes it cool if you felt 'guilty' after shooting those injured kids? "Oh man, what a cool moral choice I'm making right now shooting these kids in the back of the head. Oh well, I didn't have enough meds anyway." I get that you're trying to convince us 'there was no other way,' but that's bullshit.
-
I call bullshit. It doesn't matter how many people you 'help', that doesn't justify premeditated murder. You just wanted to shoot someone. And then you didn't feel like cleaning up your mess. There's no moral issue here. If you had the option to hide and wait to ambush them, you could have let them pass. Who are you to decide who's friendly and who's not?

Infections - Make open wounds a potentially fatal threat
nettles replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in Suggestions
I'm pretty sure infections from not cleaning wounds are already in the works. Not only that, but Dean's mentioned having different kinds of diseases that would require different kinds of medications instead of the broad range antibiotics that're so common in the game right now. They're already planning to have a wound-cleaning mechanic- we've been seeing alcohol tinctures from day one it seems like. -
If you're in a bad spot while you're impaled by a bolt, you should have the option to 'secure' the bolt with rags or a bandage. That would stop it from doing extra damage and slow bleeding until you could get somewhere where you can treat the wound. If you're impaled by something small like a bolt or an arrow, that's how you treat it temporarily. Keep it stationary until you can have medical staff have a look at it. Personally I think it'd be kind of cool to run around with a bolt tied down in the right side of your chest or something.
-
They'll probably give us some sort of red-dot sight. There really isn't much more you can do to a crossbow. I'm surprised that the PU scope can't be used with it, although it makes sense, since that sight system was supposedly made for WWII era firearms. Unless the CoD kiddies beg for explosive bolts and grenade launcher under-barrel attachments. Which will be stupid. I might be able to subscribe to fire bolts as long as the fire spreads and destroys structures and plants.
