Character Value - skillsystem, statistic...
Wayze replied to Wayze's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ofcourse you forget everything if you die, because you simply don't get a second chance. And why would it make the game boring? Isn't it boring if I learn everything in 20 hours and then have explored the whole game with all its features? Why is that exciting? The longer you survive the better you get in certain things, if you die you have to do it again, but there is always the motivation to get even further than before. But the most important thing is that you don't want to die. You are right, the avarage player life in dayz is pretty low. But why is that? Because player simply do not care about the characters. They just want to find some cool gear and kill other players. If you have really something to lose you don't want to die, so you do everything you can to survive. Now tell me, what would you do in real life if 3 guys are pointing a gun at you? Would you surrender and give them everything they want? Sure you would do that, because you want to stay alive! But what do you do in DayZ? You shot! Why? Because all you can lose is your gear, the character is just an empty vessle carrying the loot. This is the problem we have to solve, if you got a good idea, present it. But I just can't find any other than some sort of skill system... I don't think that you get the idea of the skill system, there simply are no level. Finally someone who understands what I mean. Yes, the idea is not new, but I just do not understand why it is so lost in the community. It seems nobody cares about it, Dean is talking about "working on a solution" but it kind of sounds like "there is simply no other solution than the skill idea". What I do not get is why people do not like that idea? People are talking about third and first person view over 100 pages and this topic gets at max 3 pages. What the hell? -

But I can do everything with such an character as with another one. I don't need anyone to help me. If I die I just got a little bit less health? Who cares, it is enough to repair a heli and to shot another guy. It does not change the game in anyway I think. But my questions again, what do you have against such an system? It is just how it works in real life. The more often you do something, the better you get in doing it. Why shouldn't it be like that in the game? -

I don't think this will work. People just get used to it. If it happend like 2 times to me I wouldn't give a sh*t anymore. And additionally I don't think it would be logical, why would you punish someone for dying? The death should be the punishment, not some handicaps. My question what exactly do you have against a skill system? It is very authentic and just a logical addition to the game. -

It is not about the illusion, it is about solving a problem. Like Dean said, characters do mean nothing to the players because they are meaningless. The only things that are from value in the game are the weapons and the gear. We need something to change that, even if it is just an illusion. Anyway, thanks for the beans. ^^ -

Somewhere on reddit, he actually said he does not want to have classes or something like that. However he never talked about what a skillsystem I described. And why is it completely immersion breaking? It is actually adding lots of immersion and realism. -

I would not be sure about this. Dean was talking about a skillsystem like in RPGs, where you have to decide on a class and then spend your skillpoints on different attributes. Also Dean is having a hard time and I really don't think there is any other solution for this huge problem he has. It is a core element and we should not underrastemate it. If you want a deathmatch, probably you do not want a skillsystem like that. Also this is a discussion. If you do not like the idea you can write down why. If you have another idea you can write it down here. This is about solving a huge problem, which effects every single one of us in the game. Saying "There will be no skill system!!" is not very constructive. -
I never said there should be changed anything within the game. It should stay exactly the same as it is. What the communities do with their people is for them to decide. Like I said this "post apcaylptic" stuff does not work forever. At some point it gets really boring for everyone because everyone knows how to survive and achieve everything you can.
-
People do follow orders, to achieve the best for the community. Yes it would become probably large scale Clan vs Clan deathmatches, you would always have to kill the person with the ammo, someone has to store it. Like a high value target. You will get a "king" if you are elected, if you do things many people don't like they will elect antoher "king". I don't know, it's not like there is a rule. The community decides how they manage that, they could even do it like a democracy. To become part of it you would have to sign up, then you will be ordered to a group, you start as a rookie and at some day maybe you can order your own group. If you are good at what you are doing you maybe could lead a regiment etc. this is also something that the community decides. I did not say it would be easy to do something like that, I am just saying it is better than DayZ becoming a deathmatch again. ^^

Awesome, my beans for that. Did you draw the characters yourself?

Obviously loot will be a big gameplay element in the standalone. Ammo, weapons and other gear will be very rare. But I really worry about the food. It doesn't seem that Dean does care about it, but in my opinion it is a core element of the game. I mean, you just pack 5 cans of beans and go into the forest. There you can survive forever, without any player interaction. You know, that is probably why the mod is so boring after some time. You just have no point, because survival is no actuall gameplay element. In my opinion food should be very, very rare and like 90% of unexpirienced players should die due to starvation. Maybe like 10% of the expirienced players should also die on starvation. Starvation (or dying due to thirst or desease) should be something common. In DayZ Mod I never ever died because of thirst or hunger. Seriously, not a single time. And I think if people actually die because of that, it would turn DayZ into a real survival game. Think about it, why do people die mostly in such scenarios? Because of starvation (or thirst), Dean Hall was even inspiried by a movie which had this element as a foundation for the concept. Starving due to hunger. (the road) This would be the motivation for everything. You wouldn't shoot somebody because he has good gear, you would shoot him because he may have food or even to eat him. You would not carry a weapon because you want to kill somebody else, you would carry a weapon to provide for food and defend against other people who want food. You would team up with people not because you feel alone, but because you want to hunt for food. Groups would build up because people would have a hard time to loot a city by their own. It is not easy to survive among zombies and people who want to kill you. Many groups (bandits etc.) would fight against each others just for food. Also, if the food in a group gets low that could bring a whole new dynamic. Betraying a friend just for a can of beans. This would bring a lot deeper psychologic part into the game. Who do you trust and who not? Many of you will say "But this will increase the kos!", well it probably would. But an apocalypse is no kindergarden, if we would have the starvation aspect people would behave way more authentic. How would they even go and kill players for fun if they have not even enough time to survive without searching for food. We all know kos is a problem, but it is not a problem because it exists, it is a problem because the motivation behind the KOS in the mod is just wrong. People kill for fun. That is just unauthentic. But killing someone for food is way better. Also, because food have be destroyed if shooting at somebody, people would probably trade way more. I mean, if the other guy has enough food but no ammo, I'll give him the ammo and he gives me food. Maybe we even group up. Of I shoot him after he gives me the food, well that is something I can decide. Now to not upset the casual gamers, I think the starvation system should be atleast testet out. It is easy to do it, just make food very, very rare and that's it. Maybe make some servers with that options or just set it like that while the alpha runs. I mean, it is a alpha, it is to test things. So maybe a weeks or so we all could play on hardcore mode and then give the feedback. If it totally fails well then just remove it. But maybe even the casual gamers will enjoy it, we don't know yet because we don't know the how it will change the game.

If I don't recall wrong, when DayZ came out or pretty soon after the release the backstory was: 90% of mankind die due to the virus, 9% turn into zombies and 1% is completly immune. (not sure about the numbers) The virus does not spread through contact but through air, just people with absolute immunity survive the virus. Even if the zombies were based on that, they obviously are nothing compared to them. Zombies in 28 weeks later are such a threat that the probability you surviving even highly armend is pretty small. The zombies in the game are a joke. That is why it is no survival game. And I bet that won't change much in standalone. Maybe zombies will be a bit harder, but no way like in 28 days later. 1-3 months and I could get problems, but how are the odds for that? Good luck surviving 1-3 months in a world like 28 days later, I hope you saw the movie because without a heavily guarded fortress or a helicopter you are pretty screwed. You see, all the problems you describe are more like the problems after survival. If you survive in DayZ 1-3 you did a good job, at some point you will die anyway, but the real problem is not to survival longer than 1-3 month in my opinion it should be to get even to the point where these kind of things bother you. This would be a good explanation if the zombies were near as dangerous as the zombies in 28 days later. But they just aren't and they never will be. So that is your explanation for DayZ not being a survival game? You will see, in the end even the SA will be easy as f*ck. As soon as you know how to get your vitamines straight you reach endgame and the game is boring as sh*t. I atleast want a hardcore mode where this is not the case.

Probably Done playing DayZ Forever Until This awful bug is fixed....
Wayze replied to leviski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So it is a bug? I called someone hacker because of it xD -
Is your ego really that big? :|

Point A: The food in the world will be gone, very, very fast. As soon as people know that the zombie apocalypse is coming (it will not come within one day) people will buy/steal everything they can. Very soon all supermarkets will be empty, the people who die because of the virus, well they just die. The people who turn into zombies just turn into zombies. The people left will have very few things left because before all the people died by the virus they just freaked out. If you are ill and you know that you will die, what will you do? Most of the people would go crazy, nobody would go to work because it would be way to dangerous. So no food supplies etc, but people need that food, even if they are infected they just want to survive so they vandalise and steal everything they can. As you see such an apocalypse is not as simple as you think, it won't run like: Zombies are there and the world ends. The virus has to spread over the world and within the time the virus needs to kill or transform all the human the people will ofcourse be aware of it. Point B: Dean said very often that he wants DayZ to be like The Road, even a few days ago he said that on reddit. So yes, DayZ SA has very much to do with The Road.
-
You call it opinion. The world is unfair, sorry if you did not realise. I never did put words into your mouth, you just misunderstood my post. I called DayZ Mod a bad deathmatch mod and you thought I meant another game. Anyway, if you never signed up into a forum that was probably the first lesson you had to learn. In the internet you should never take things personally because they aren't.
-
What the hell does this have to do with starvation? In a survival scenario you don't have f*cking time to count calories and vitamines, you eat what you find. So you really think that these desease would be the main problem in an apocalypse? Healthy adults? Dude, lack on certain vitamins is unhealthy. Also is takes months to years until you get critical and die. I don't think that in a survival scenario you would eat the same food all day because you will eat whatever the f*ck you find. I really don't think you will die in Dayz because of lack of vitamines or proteins. Probably you get some disadvantages. But like I said these problem you describe are the last that would trouble you. These deseases, like I said, take months to build up deadly. It shouldn't be that you have to find the right but, it should be like finding finding food at all.
-
A view questions to your deseases: What people are mainly effected by these medical conditions? How old are they? Where do they live? Do they die due to these conditions, or do they in the end die because of starvation? Why do these people get sick so easily? Do they also get sick if they have actually enough food? Read the articles and answere to these questions, maybe we can talk further then. Also I want to note that you are not really responding to my post. I even said in itself that these arguments, no matter if they are true or not, are totally irrelevant for this conversation. Like I said watch The Road if you haven't seen it, it is the best survival movie ever made.
-
Exactly, I don't understand the guys who cry about KoS. It is the whole point. It is what makes the game so thrilling. It is what makes the game so authentic. It is like a freakin' experiment where people act how they would in such a scenario, and sadly it looks pretty bad for us. What is wrong about the mod is not that it has much KoS, the problem is the motivation of the KoS situations. People do it just for fun and they always will do it if you do not turn it into a survival game. I think that KoS will not change much in the SA, even without the starvation system it would change nothing. But we will see when the game releases. Anyways, like I said the motivation behind KoS is the important part. Why are players doing it now? To have fun. Why would players do it in a survival game? Because they want to survive.+ This is the big difference, KoS will never disappear and it will probably increase because in the SA you actually have f*cking much to lose, not just some AS50 which you find in 20 mins anyway.
-
We are actually talking about years after the outbreak. Like Dean said more than once his game is very much inspired by The Road, which has exactly the same problems which I described. What you described are not the real third world problems, because they are pretty happy if they can survive and if they have atleast something to eat every second day. But that was not what we were talking about, it is not authentic. Just watch the movie The Road and you will probably see what I mean. DayZ was actually not supposed to be a zombie game, Dean just wanted to create a game where people act like in a surviva scenario. He is often redditing (is that a word?) that he actually want the game to be kind of like The Road. Jesus, I can not explain to you the problem if you never watched the movie. It is freakin' awesome and DayZ should be exactly like that.
-
People can survive months just by eating bananas and drink water. If you are low on food you eat whatever you find, you have no time to count calories, every single bit helps. What you describe are more like first world problems, which probably won't occur in a survival scenario. Finding your ingrediants and make your meal is good, but ridicilous in a survival scenario, because like I said food is no common thing and is very, very rare. I don't care about the mod anymore, I just want the alpha to be good.
-
Why so complex and unauthentic? It would be much simpler to just reduce the food. Also food should be the main motivation for killing a player or teaming up. If it won't be like that people will just learn after 2 weeks how to survive perfectly without starving or dying by disease ever. But if survival is not just about knowlagde, but also about luck, it would bring a whole new dynamic to a game and make it way more athentic. Additionally the end game would take waaay longer to reach, maybe even never. Luck is something that is extremly important in every survival situation and I think it should also be very important in DayZ. What is wrong with you? Some aggressions :/ Anyway, you played DayZ mod which I meant with "deathmatch zombie sh*t mod". You don't have to make a point because I think you are just totally intolerant, you cannot accept another opinion and even call me names, very childish. You always have a chance to avoid death, what would lesser food change in that?
-
There already is that mechanic. And I don't know why there never should be a mechanic like that because many games do that, even non-hardcore games. That isn't the game? We never played the game, you never played the game. You played some deathmatch zombie sh*t mod and call if survival, but like I said it was never survival and probably will never be. Atleast give the chance to test this kind of thing out, maybe even you would enjoy it who knows?
-
What happens is an authentic survival simulation. Without this aspect the game is not worthy to call itself survival game because it simply isn't.
-
I am not sure if this was mentioned by Dean, if yes I was not aware of it and this thread is pointless. I really would like to have more than one character in the standalone. Maybe like 3 characterslots, it should be limited because otherwise people would probably collect characters which would take huge space for the servers. However, if I have a character with good gear etc. and I am in the mood to change my playstyle, I would really like to have another character to do so. You know, having a character only playing as a bandit and another one who is careful and friendly. Is anything like that confirmend? And would you like that idea?
-
There are eastereggs even in the vanilla DayZ Mod. But I kind of get your point. Anyway, UFOs would be no easter eggs, I mean, there are many UFO videos now, why would people stop to see UFOs after the apocalpyse? :D
