From Rocket's pinned post in announcements: More Zombies Target delivery: Ongoing We absolutely plan to have more zombies. To cope with the current total dynamic entity count of over 10000 we have had to make a great deal of optimizations. If loot is completely removed, we can easily run 4000 zombies in our debug builds. In the new year we will be optimizing the way we handle dynamic objects (such as loot) a great deal more which should give us significant savings - but the change was considered too risky to be done prior to alpha launch. If we had problems, we would have delayed the project further by months. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/156129-confirmed-upcoming-features-for-dayz/

It seems that most servers are currently on a four hour restart cycle... or maybe that's just the one or two I've been on over the past week or so. As long as you can find enough food not to starve, hang tight and wait for a restart, at which point all loot and zombies will respawn. Water is everywhere, so thirst shouldn't be an issue. Just go to first person perspective in front of any body of water or well and you'll get the "drink water" prompt by looking at it.

You're doing it wrong. -
How many zombies have you killed with your fists?
zhrike replied to hookhead's topic in General Discussion
Solo I've yet to even take a hit vs. a zombie using fists. I've taken a couple hits fighting two at a time. Killed one player with fists, too (he hit first, from behind, the prick). Always go 1PP. It was surprisingly effective. -
Amusing and entertaining. You were running through Elektro, by the way, not Cherno.

This. Death in DayZ is liberating. Reminds me of a quote from Fight Club: "The more shit you own, the more shit owns you." As soon as I die I find a measure of relief. Then I rambo at full speed at armed players, if any are around. That was more fun when Balota spawns were still in game, because I'd get shot, and spawn right outside of the airfield again and charge back in. w00t!

Ruined ammo, canned foods, drinks and clothing.
zhrike replied to Nienko's topic in General Discussion
I don't think that it is clear at this point, but I believe that ruined objects have their effects degrade - and if not now, they will in future updates. Ruined food is more likely to get you sick, ruined ammo - maybe less damage, maybe less accurate, ruined clothes/helmets don't protect you as much, etc. Ruined gun attachments have been anecdotally shown to effect accuracy. Certainly you can't see very well through a ruined sight or scope. I have a ruined can opener that works as well as a pristine one. I'd imagine that ruined can openers in the future would either not work, or work like using knives/screw drivers/axes to open cans - where you lose some of the food inside. All of this is just guesswork, though. Edit: Ruined ammo increasing the possibility of a misfire would be pretty cool. -
You're not the only one; these forums are rife with unreasonable people incapable of reading text that stares you in the face each time you launch the game. You're not paying for this game, you're paying for the full game. In buying it NOW you are granted access. It's in early development. Don't like it, don't play. Due to buying it early, you'll be able to get it at any point in its development including full release. It being an alpha is not an excuse. It is a reality. Deal with it. You're not the first and surely won't be the last to jump on the forums to whine about something because you clearly did not understand what you were getting into.

Nicely done. One question: did you actually find three map fragments in Stary just by looting a bunch of houses?
-
Nice kit, and good advice already. The only thing I'd add - if you're going for the full camo effect, replace that mountain backpack with a hunter's backpack, which has 5 fewer slots, but much better camo, and doesn't impede your vision when looking over your shoulder as much, and also creates less of a profile. I'm also trying to replace my m4 with a mosin, but haven't come across one in a while. The .357 also packs more of a punch than the fnx45, but you're set with ammo there already. You are definitely a target, though. :-)

who has a MAC and is running the SA? my buddy needs help
zhrike replied to mjf6866's topic in Troubleshooting
It's like running any version of windows, though boot camp for specific platforms generally comes with appropriate driver software. He might need to install some, but it should be pretty straightforward. -

zhrike replied to mjf6866's topic in Troubleshooting
The reason boot camp is far preferable to a VM solution (parallels, vmware fusion, virtualbox, etc.), is that for gaming you want all of the hardware resources to be available to the host OS and the game. If you run windows in a VM running on a mac, the MacOS is going to have to allocate a significant portion of its hardware resources to run the OS, so there is added overhead. With boot camp, it's no different than a PC. Windows has all the resources available to it, including full use of the CPU/GPU. I can't imagine that DayZ would run in a VM. It might launch, but would be unusable. If he has a high end mac, with a decent GPU, DayZ in windows via boot camp should run well. -
It is a possible loot item. I've found NW, E, and N Chernarus maps at various times. I'm not sure how the crafting works, but I'd guess that East and West will craft into a full map, as will North and South, as they all contain the entire parts of the map for their location. For example, E Chernarus has everything from Guba down to the coast, to about a mid-point in the map. Just a guess, though. I definitely could not combine E and N. I tried.

The second map is from the mod, not the SA, though it says SA on the page. The biggest obvious differences are up north; especially NW of Lopatino and the Dam (which doesn't appear to exist).
-
I think that's true only with the pieces. I think I read that once you "craft" the full map then the M key will bring it up.

Dear blond woman in Cherno. I saw you hanging around a barn. There was something about your posture that was really sexy ... arms akimbo, somewhat vacant look on your face, dirty hair. I like a woman who goes natural. Also, you had arguably the most interesting makeup I'd ever seen. Not quite goth, more ... undertaker. Very hot. I'm shy, so I crept up on you quietly, but damn that loud concrete! You noticed me, and were interested, evidenced by your shriek, and the chasing. The moaning was hot, but I was tongue-tied, so I ran. I just didn't know what to say. I just wanted you to know - I was into you, too. Second chance? E-mail me what you were wearing so I know it was you. p.s. I was the guy all in green.

Mosin or M4? Consider upcoming changes to game
zhrike replied to unicornsmustdie's topic in General Discussion
Well, as you travel around up there you will notice all of the roads, intersections, and concrete pads that are clearly place markers for towns, villages, and buildings, as well as the buildings that are already there. I have no doubt that more are coming. That said, there will always be areas to find to place a tent, and some peace and quiet. Maybe. Then we'll get to see about these roaming zeds and hordes. The tents, if like in the mod, will be placeable item that you can stow under a tree, for example (though I can't tell you how many I lost by trying to get them too deep into a pine), which will make it hard for other players to find. I would say "impossible" but I had a spot on the mod both in public hive on a very busy server and some private hives that were never discovered. In the mod they are camo, too. I'd bet that is still going to be possible. The game is still going to be a deathmatch for many players, who will hug the coast. Bases, team play/pvp, and solo survivalists will be most of what is up north, I think. -
The amount of people up north is TOO DAMN LOW.
zhrike replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
This, plus it is obvious that the north is going to have a ton of areas - even full cities - as the development continues. I know Dean said that one of the intents of the SA is to get people all over the map a little bit more, so I believe that there will be some very enticing loot. There already is, for those of us who have spent a lot of time up there. I also don't think that the concentration of people around the coast is going to lessen much as long as that is where players spawn, as there are always going to be spawn campers, fresh spawns, and bandit hunters roaming about. -
Mosin or M4? Consider upcoming changes to game
zhrike replied to unicornsmustdie's topic in General Discussion
For living off of the land, playing solo: any gun with working suppressors. Silence is golden. PVP is almost always about who sees who first, and that often starts with who hears who first. Even if it isn't your aim, it's someone's, so be silent and deadly. Killing animals is a bit easier when you can take them out with a suppressed weapon without alerting other players/zeds, rather than chasing them down with an axe. For me, for that motive: suppressed weapons and a ghillie suit (when they're in). Animal hunting/gutting will be important once the map is finished, I think, because with the look of the areas up north that haven't been developed, I think it's going to be a lot busier up there once those cities are populated with buildings and loot. Right now it's very quiet and peaceful. -
I found four in my first life. None sufficient to put together, and two dupes (E or N, can't remember which). Since then, nothing, and many hours played. I had E, N, and NW fragments. I like them being rare.

I am squarely in the "both" camp. I don't think it is about elitism. It's about maturity (or a lack thereof), and general antisocial behavior. Those who seek to impose their will on others are either limited in terms of their empathy, broken, or immature. With the age range of those who play the game (and the high neckbeard ratio), that's both understandable and expected. I say that about both sides of this argument. Let people play the way they want to play, and that includes respecting the opinions of those with whom you disagree. In real life you can disagree, and if you cross a line, there are consequences. Some lines are drawn by us (social sanctions), and some for us (laws). That's somewhat simplified, but it applies. Say you call my mother a whore. Even if she is, I'm probably going to punch you in your gob, and it's going to hurt. That's a social sanction. Then, I'll likely be arrested. Maybe for simple assault, but if you really pissed me off, maybe aggravated. That's a law. In DayZ there are no consequences. None. Dying? Losing gear? Nope. If you call my mother a whore in DayZ I will shoot you in your face ... unless you shot me first. Or maybe you have God-mode engaged. Even so, worst-case scenario you start all over at the beach. Or stuck in Novy. But most likely at the beach. No consequences ... not even a bruise. It's easy to be impersonal, despite it doing a decent job at creating the most immersive and engaging environment I've ever seen. It's still easy to dehumanize. It's like all the other drivers on the road. They are all assholes (and deserve to die). So, aside from those broken exceptions, why does one (a rational human being) enter a server that is PVE only and kill players? To impose their will? To get some easy kills? To break shit and laugh, metaphorically? I'm not sure but I think it's a bit of all three. And seriously, come on, it's almost literally fish in a barrel. Only not fish, and not quite a barrel, and it's a bit larger than that. It's newbs coming to YOU. "Friendly in Cherno?" You bet. BANG! The preceding paragraph applies only to private hive MOD servers, because neither public hive MOD or current SA servers are actually allowed to ban anyone from the server for PVP. Even so, if a bunch of carebears, as some call them, want to hold hands and run along the shores of Chernarus singing kumbaya, what's it to you? This is the part I don't understand. And for the PVE camp: why bust a nut when someone does that? It's going to happen. No amount of rational discourse will change the fact that PVE-only advertising is like lighting the "all-you-can-eat-for-5-bucks" light at some greasy spoon in Alabama. The fatties are going come running, in carloads (and clans). Shit? Meet flies. All that said, this entire argument only makes sense when dealing with reasonable people. PVE in the standalone only exists because of PVP, because the E is no challenge. The E in the mod, same thing. Once you knew how to deal with zombies, staying alive was a piece of cake, and players represent the only true threat. This is my opinion, alone, but why I like the PVP/PVE aspect together.
