Is there any crafting working at this time?
zhrike replied to Noisex's topic in New Player Discussion
You can make wooden splints with rags and sticks. -
Add the map to your quick bar, and just hit that number, Hit tab to bring up your inventory, then drag the map, whichever one it is, to the quickbar slot you want, and then use that to bring it up. Even with multiple maps the M key does nothing, so far. I had the NW map, the E and the N. Maybe if you get enough to put them together the M key will bring it up, but for the now the quickbar slot for the particular map you've found has to suffice.

Ah, I see on the map. I missed that one. Nice! So, on the way south went through Berezino, fully geared, I mean totally, had everything, all pristine, two ammo boxes, all camo, and what happened?Fell off of the hospital roof and died. Bug, not jump or walked off. No biggie, happy to be a part of the dev cycle. Time to start all over again!

Since 'zombie' hordes are confirmed.. what would you consider a "horde"?
zhrike replied to serenityrick's topic in General Discussion
I'd love to see 100+ - the Oblivion Lost Mod for Stalker introduced mutant hordes after blowouts that were around that range ... not exactly the same thing, but, depending on how strong the zombies are (not at all at the moment) it would be pretty awesome to see more than a hundred. Since they're server side it might be difficult in terms of performance, but would be fun. -
Yeah, I'm up north and fully stocked, geared and healthy, heading back down south now to kill and die before I get wiped anyway. I ran through a couple of ponds on the map that look like craters. Can't wait for the areas up north that are clearly going to be towns are actually populated with buildings and zeds. BTW, by "train station" which one do you mean? There are at least two; one NNW of Lopatino, and one at Guba. Might be one between by I didn't hit it.

... though not quite as anatomically correct as the real one. (from DayzDB) This can be found NNE of Northeast Airfield. I've rotated it 180 degrees. Here is my character prone around the neck area; changed the field of view to get as much as possible, but from the ground you'd never be able to tell.

Ha. If they had included the original version ... can you imagine the whining? After the bellyaching going on already regarding the normal and well-advertised alpha-related issues, people would go apoplectic and heads would explode. Wait. Rocket, maybe you ought to reconsider changing it back to the original.

This. I was using the dayDB map to navigate as I went across from west to east - this was before I got the eastern Chernarus map. I had the NW map, but I was off of it at this point (obviously). I know the landscape pretty well, but to find specific new buildings I was checking my progress here and there, and noticed the giant after leaving the airfield making my way to Guba, which is pretty damn lootable now. Orlok: I looked for "Cernes Abbas" and found only my mention of it yesterday. Not surprised it has been posted before, though.

In my experience so far, going into first person always gets the drink water dialog from streams or ponds.

I spawned in Balota with my second or third character ... not sure, I think the first couple died pretty quickly. Somehow survived Balota, up through Green Mountain, hit Pustoshka, found an NW map, saw this new area NW of Lopatino and decided to check it out. It's pretty cool. Railroad starts there, some industrial, lots of garages, a train station and an office building. Decided to run West to East to check out NE airfield and the areas NE of that. I've played on full servers and have seen no one. Not a single player. I did not hit NW, but did go to Devil's Castle, then Gvodzno. Just ran through NE Airfield after Krasnostav. Killed plenty of zombies, although they're rare. At full health, overstocked with food and water and almost fully geared. After NE noticed an easter egg on the map: The Cerne Abbas Giant, NE of NE. If you want to find it, just go almost due north from the easternmost end of the NE airfield. I mean on the map. Anyway, all that said I cannot possibly carry all of the food and drink I find, so actually being able to survive is easy up north. I've been healthy since Lopatino, and even a zombie hit that causes bleeding heals almost immediately.

Avoid "Survival Gaming" DayZ server, so dumb...

Louis CK's use (and I've seen that dozens of times, and agree with it) is a far cry from yours. -
GREAT SERVER, BALANCED, FRIENDLY, TRY US --> Devils Castle Will Fall | DayZ 1.7.6.1 | [GBYC] - New Abandoned Cities | Alt Loot Tables | Sidechat on
zhrike replied to {GBYC} EvilBunny's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Yo Nim, et al. The shitty spring weather finally broke here in the NE of US, so I've been outside most of the time, and working on the yard, pool (and swimming in it). Been hard to think about sitting at the PC lately. Got my headset and mic, and then life intruded. When I do check in I check the server and no one has been on, so I was playing wasteland a bit, and then nothing. Hopefully will get back on at some point when you and others are around. Just realized it's event day and missed it again. :-( -
I have one on public hive that I would gladly trade for NVG ... if I can ever get to the server again (it's in a tent). PM me.

Meaning it's easier from here. He just did climb Everest, after all.

Avoid "Survival Gaming" DayZ server, so dumb...

What do you expect to garner by posting videos that show you acting like a spoiled, homophobic four year old? Hiding in bases and overprotective admins cheating with god mode are bad, but so was your reaction. Grow up. -
"On the left is the former corner store, and on the right just past those houses is the old Chernogorsk Fire Sta ..." <crack> <crack> <crack> <crack> Segway tour transformed into a pile of corpses amid immobile segways.

What the game is to you is not what it is to everyone. There are dozens of non pvp servers peopled by a collection of experienced players and newbs who not only disagree with you, they invalidate your point (your hair is a bird). The game is not the same game to ME without PVP either. I'm not sure you're reading what I am writing. Firstly: You implied that the game is about PVP at its core. You just did again in this very post. Go and read what you wrote once again. Secondly, this is not about me. I don't sit in non pvp servers. I play PVP. I started on PVP servers. You can learn while playing on PVP servers, but it takes a lot longer. Your point that playing on a non pvp server takes away from the learning experience is utterly absurd. You can track players on a non pvp server as well. I also watched videos while I was learning the game. Found PsiSyndicate. It took about ... ONE before it was completely obvious that Cherno, Elektro, Stary and NWAF were PVP hotspots. To learn sniper hill. To see where snipers liked to camp at NEAF. And running across an open field in broad daylight, well, being sniped once is enough to learn that that is a bad idea. Same thing for Namalsk, Taviana, Panthera, etc. etc. I don't want things to be easy. I play 2017 and Wasteland. I hate being given stuff, I want it all to be earned. This isn't about ME. This game without PVP is still a game that some people enjoy. I don't really enjoy it anymore unless I get to help a new player or players learn the ropes. There are tons of things to learn that have nothing to do with PVP. I get annoyed by the admin vehicle hoarding that takes place on those servers, I often laugh when I see regulars on those servers die from zombies (new players, okay, but an experienced player? A zombie? rlly?), but so what? I responded here because I find the notion of other people defining how the game should be played ridiculous. And to the OP, not it is not enforceable. There is a lot about the notion that I also find annoying, but it is a fact that many people prefer PVE without PVP. I am not one of them, but there it is. You also have to realize that for every snot-nosed sociopath that joins the game, there are other children who don't react so well to being murdered all the time. I am a father. That bothers me. It often seems that these kinds of arguments arise from people who think that playing a game in some way communicates something about them in the world (and it does, actually, but generally not in the way they hope or think).

How ironic. It is about YOU. You are the one worrying and complaining about how other people play the game. Sounds suspiciously like ego. Essentially, teaching players on non pvp servers is bad because ... ? Because PVP is the point of the game? It's the point of the game FOR YOU. You can't be thick enough to ignore the fact that learning the environment, the cities, the towns, the lay of the land, the weapons, learning zombie behavior, how to avoid and lose aggro, etc., holds value when playing on a PVP server. Happily criticize all you want, but start by making a valid point. The mod is called DayZ. Not DayPVP. Script kiddies are actually damaging to the game. They drive people away. Non-pvpers are just on the fringes, doing their own thing. How many non-pvp servers start you with a coyote backpack, a DMR, and have hundreds of vehicles? One final thing: History is littered with ideas, concepts, and products whose use dramatically differed from the creator's original intent. DayZ is out there now. Not even Rocket can define how people play.

I played NO PVP when I started simply because I never knew that PVP was so central to the game. It still isn't, not in everyone's mind. In your minds (those who seem confused about, and hostile towards the idea) the game is without meaning minus PVP. That's your perspective. I first learned about the game via Zemalf's youtube channel and what I expected was survival and exploration, not PVP. I played on one of those servers because I was murdered when I was still spawning in one night. I saw in side "A guy just spawned here and I shot him in the leg and he won't leave." When I did spawn I was bleeding and had a broken leg. It was night, I couldn't see anything, didn't even know how to turn on a flashlight, and so started crawling around with my axe, yes hoping that I could get to the shooter before I was killed. I didn't. Anyway, it was very frustrating to be playing a game to explore and survive against a horde of zombies only to be murdered by everyone all the time. That's how it felt. I now play mostly PVP, so I know the ropes. But then, it was just "what the FUCK?!" It was culture shock. So now I will, once in a while, visit a non pvp server in order to help newbies who may have been like me. I find shooting a bandit in the face, and running many kilometers across the wilderness down to cherno to help out a new player equally gratifying. I did that thing last week amidst mostly playing PVP on wasteland servers. Bottom line: you don't get to dictate how other people enjoy the game. Ignore it. It's not for you, fine. What I do see on the servers that I visit is that there is usually a small group of admins and/or regulars who help new players. That's what they do. I find lots of in game behavior reprehensible (bambie luring, spawn camping), but fuck it, that's the way those people want to play. Their choice. Edit: And yes, without PVP the tension is entirely gone. But it's not just about that for everyone, all the time.

How Will You Play Standalone Without the Mod's Exploits?
zhrike replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When I started playing DayZ, and thought that zombies were a threat, I would crawl through towns, when I decided to try to enter at all, doing my best to avoid aggro altogether. If I got aggro, I ran out of town and weaved in and out of trees to lose LOS. Then I found myself in Skalka, where I had a full inventory of gear, food, and drink, all wiped due to a server reset, and was starving and thirsty, so had to run down through Lopatino and eventually Vybor - somehow not dying. In any event, I realized that running at a full clip through towns was rather easy, and you could still lose zombies in buildings, so that changed my tactics significantly. I now run right into/through towns (being wary of players) knowing that I can run through a building or two, or just lure the stubborn followers and take them out patiently. I also use the pine tree exploit especially around NW. So those things would change my tactics back to a more stealthy, patient approach. I laugh when I think that I once belly-crawled for hundreds of meters approaching a town, or crawled through NW. "It's just like people who tell people they can't do something or have something because they don't like that something." Fixed. If you think it's democrats and environmentalists ONLY who do that ... welcome to being human. Also, generally-speaking, laws are enacted with something called a 'rationale' that rarely consists of "because we don't like it." Unless you mean like, you know, gay marriage. In which case, those damn democrats and environmentalists ... oh, wait. Or teaching intelligent design ... oh, wait. I could go on. It happens across the whole spectrum of political ideology. -
The latter, definitely. That said, that's my (and our?) preference, and not all people feel that way. I say let them play the way they want, and keep looking for servers that present the game how you want to play.

GREAT SERVER, BALANCED, FRIENDLY, TRY US --> Devils Castle Will Fall | DayZ 1.7.6.1 | [GBYC] - New Abandoned Cities | Alt Loot Tables | Sidechat on
zhrike replied to {GBYC} EvilBunny's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
For the record: I will never ask for anything I've lost, no matter the reason. My mantra in dayZ: There is always more stuff. And in this latest case: my own stupidity/poor decision. In the future I know to: store toolbelt items, and keep a civ skin around to swap into before events. I generally drop them. I've already replaced most of the toolbelt items, including all the important ones, and got a camo skin, which I prefer over the ghillie anyway. I just want to know IF I wear it it won't be removed by script as per a post a couple of months ago related to clan skins. I am not talking about the soldier skin I have from the event, I mean a separate camo skin I looted. I actually like the soldier skin the best, but those are no longer lootable as per 1.7.6 IIRC. As to the loot, I want to elaborate a little. I don't find that the loot tables in general are too much (at all), I really think it's just that set of crates on the far southwest coast, you know the ones. Not speaking for Anton here, just me. If they generated their loot once every couple of weeks, that would be more balanced, methinks. A new coyote backpack plus all that ammo each restart seems a bit much, but as I said before: very minor. I also like the idea of that kind of crate being dropped randomly somewhere in the woods, as stated in the main server description. It definitely takes the sting out of that forlorn spawn, though. I'd maybe replace the coyote backpack with an alice, survival ACU, or british assault; no one would complain about finding any of those upon spawning. Or randomize it. Whatever, really. I still think it's the best server I've played. Just need more people. -

GREAT SERVER, BALANCED, FRIENDLY, TRY US --> Devils Castle Will Fall | DayZ 1.7.6.1 | [GBYC] - New Abandoned Cities | Alt Loot Tables | Sidechat on
zhrike replied to {GBYC} EvilBunny's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I mostly disagree, but certainly see your point. I love the fact that hueys spawn each restart. It makes it easy to find one, but they disappear quickly. You can use them while they last, but you can't use them for storage, and you can't hoard them. When there are people on, it becomes a tense decision, as you know people will be racing to the spawn locations, or even camping them. Ideally more server population makes the issue balanced, I think. When you, Grim, and I were the only ones on, we were flying and picking up hueys, looting all the hot spots and talking on side chat most of the time. If there were more people on, we would have been dying if we tried any of that. And, even as it was, it was fun. Dying wouldn't have been so bad, either. :-) I've been on many servers, as I am guessing many of us have, and what happens in my experience, particularly on higher pop servers, is that helis get cached away in the debug forest/plains, or in bases (i.e. hoarded) by the admins or "donators" and forget that "ooh I found a heli" feeling, because it never happens, OR you have to steal one, in which case the admins and/or their friends will use tools to locate and kick/ban you. I get frustrated by that, personally, even though I don't have to be flying everywhere, and don't mind running from one end of the map to the other. Other players should get to fly, even if it is to fly a heli right into a hangar (*cough* *snicker*). It's fun. These guys (admins, clans, players) are not like that. This server is awesome. I think I agree with this one. I definitely like to work for my gear - it makes it more valuable and gives meaning to the beginning. That said, very minor issue for me. The fact that the admin/owner and players on this server are fair, mature, and funny (the event banter was hilarious) is the huge issue for me. By the way Anton, if you can, make the event. I was only on for part of it since I lost my connection mid-way through, but it was a blast. How many people participated? I never looked at team 1, but I think we had 7 on team 2. About the event, I was brilliant, as usual (he says, sarcastically). I made decisions such as "oh, a g36K. I never used one of those before, I think it's a great idea to try it NOW." Which resulted in me shooting at (I think it was) Jake across a field, oh ... 12 to eleventy-billion times without a single hit. WORST.SHOOTING.EVAR! He killed me, and deservedly so. I swear I would have done better with a makarov in that particular case. That said, the L85s worked just fine, and I did get to kill Unit in my first and second runs up to the castle. Oh, so an event question - what the fuck was the objective? I asked my team ... the answer "kill them, don't die." Which was quite amusing - but I went to the tower, killed a few, died, went again, killed a few, got in, camped up on the stairs and killed as many as tried to enter before they got me. I got the feeling later that camping in the tower was frowned upon, but I honestly had no idea what we were supposed to be doing. I thought we were trying to hold the tower. Not a big deal either way, because I had a lot of fun, even after I stopped trying my stealthy approaches (which resulted in many more kills than deaths) and starting rushing in headlong because I thought that was the idea (which resulted in many deaths and no kills). Who did Will kill at our spawn? Whoever it was, the argument between you guys was hysterical. Was Will the rogue helicopter pilot, too? I got a headset with mic on order, so next time I can join in the profanity. Seriously though, that was maybe the most fun I've had on DayZ as of yet. Oh, one more question; GMT +0 2100 is 1700 my time, but the event started at 4pm (1600) my time. What gives you limey bastards? I'll echo what EB said about self-perpetuating the server population. I am also guilty of checking into the server, and if there are few people on, trying a more populated server. I'll try harder to stick on this one for a bit. Two more questions: 1 - Got an M107 from a heli crash. Are those generally not available on this server? If so, I'll dump it. It's too damn loud anyway. 2 - It appears that I still have the clan skin from the event (soldier skin with helmet). I had a ghillie beforehand, and I didn't have civilians clothes to change, so I suppose that is lost. No biggie. I do, however, have a camo skin but saw in earlier posts that you remove those through scripts. That was a couple of months ago, though. Can I use the camo skin? EB - thanks for all the work you do on this server.
