    November Round-up

If it was out this thread would have gone mad with replies. Rocket's working on fixing some last bugs. Wait a few weeks or a month, and it'll be released hopefully by then.

Quick status update for week 8 November

Very offtopic but can't help myself. Is "alpher" a word play because of Rocket's odd pronunciation of "alpha," probably induced by his 'Stralianess?

Offtopic, but, is it just me or has this thread lost some pages?

Uh, so the word "indie" may just be a shortening of the word "independent," hence "indiependent."
  7. HumanBeing25

    November Round-up

So you're saying BI is indie?
  8. HumanBeing25

    November Round-up

Indie is usually used to refer to a very small or new business. For example, 7 Day to Die's company, The Fun Pimps Interactive, only has very few employes until recently, and doesn't have a big market (until recently). If indie means independent then even the biggest company such as Billzard and Infinity Ward or whatever it's called, classifies as indie - which makes little sense.

Yup ;D let's just hope no crazy person has left a suitcase with 2kg of explosives in it, that will detonate on the 12th of November, at 12:00pm.

Dean Hall is not an indie dev. He works for a major game development company as lead project manager or whatever his position is.

Someone tell me why Rocket is on Reddit doing his Q&A session and not working on what needs to be worked on? #trainwreck #nothabbening #al_ids_lods

Impressive that a lead project manager and programmer at Bohemia Interactive could make such a big mistake to confuse the clipping/lagging of zombies with poor server performance and not poor path design.. Oh, well. At least they've found out about it, and at least now it can get fixed.

Triple A? What medication are you on? Do you know how computer games work?? I've written OpenGL games and tried my way with DirectX. I've written plenty of WinAPI based C++ software, including cheats for some popular games, and things alike it. All I am pointing out is that I know at the very least the basics of these things. Trying to educate me with Youtube pop culture nonsense of bottleneck and cliche ideas like those, are not going impress me and certainly not educate me.

Put that thing down, sire. You're going to hurt yourself someday. His assumption is that a game has to be developed like major game companies develop them - they don't. I am merely pointing out that I am know how games work, I know how individual parts of the computer work, I know how (to some extend) how the Windows operating system works, and so on, and so on.

    November Round-up

Mate, I've written my own games, I've written plenty of C++ software. Don't try and educate me.

    November Round-up

... lol no. That's not how games work, but anyway, if you read his Reddit posts or just scroll a bit back in this thread (I don't have to freaking link every post, just look people!!!) you'll find where he said it.

Except SSDs are extremely overpriced, they often cannot have much space (for obvious reasons - more space tends to mean a slowdown in performance). If the game doesn't run sufficiently, I'll consider buying a 60GB ssd for the game to run on... sounds like a fair investment. The 120gb ones, however, are very pricey for what you get.

Quick status update for week 8 November

Every EVENT (using your keyboard, etc.) in the game is a part of every FRAME--and every FRAME can be looked as the roundtrip of the central loop (in not so complicated games), so, for example: While(gameinitiated){ (potential cleanup of stuff in memory - i.e., deleting memory items etc) load stuff calculate stuff render stuff} So, the fps would be how many times the computer could run this loop shown above, per second. Modern games use multithreading, which makes it more complicated to illustrate, but it's essentially the same idea. While the server does not have to have a UI, or have the UI displayed, the server produces frames more or less like the client does. In some cases - most cases hopefully - the server handles the most workload for security reasons. This means that the server generates some of the FRAMES (for collision detection, etc.) and HANDLES (as per the meaning of the English word) EVENTS (i.e., you pressed a button which the server is told via your client), and sends some of the output of these FRAMES back to your client, to update/synchronize your client with the server. If the server is able to handle less FRAMES it means your client not have stuff updated/synchronized as often, hence when you try to pickup an item, nothing happens for 2 seconds, and zombies warp/stutter, etc. You get the idea.

Isn't it ironic that you're required to make your PC do more stuff to increase the amount of work your PC can do, i.e., you're required to increase workload to increase frames produced per second? Out of curiosity, why did Dean say that we'd be better off buying a SSD for our operating system AND the game. Wouldn't one SSD only used for the game/steam/whatever else, be sufficient?

    November Round-up

That's right. Arma 2 ran better in conjunction with older system and ran better if you turned some of your settings up. Ironic, right? Let's hope the SA does not feature these problems.

    November Round-up

Yea, sure! I'm going to spend 200usd on an SSD for the game and 200 usd on an SSD for my operating system, just so I can run this game... No.
  23. HumanBeing25

    November Round-up

This is very valuable information. According to Rocket, many game textures are going to be loaded from the harddrive during render instead of at start and then into VRAM or RAM... Basically, this is what Arma 2 has, and it was what mainly caused lag. So, for those of us without a SSD - and since we can't use ramdisk for how big the game is - we're probably going to run into some issues. Remember those who had their harddrives fried because of Arma 2's poor optimatization? LOL!

Rocket please answer how long you estimate the fixing will take so we can get just a rough estimate. 1-2 weeks? A month? 2 months??
