Everything that's wrong with DayZ servers in one picture.
napalmdog replied to FrostDMG's topic in General Discussion
Then you get attrition either way, by them playing on other servers or they just quit playing and go to some other game. Hind-sight is 20/20. When I played the mod servers went away primarily as hackers overwhelmed unmonitored servers and there were just so many servers. I left servers personally because of hacking, horrid ping or I just wanted to play differently from time to time. In your defense I have admin assisted and I saw people leave the server because they weren't getting enough free stuff, but in the end the server went away because it was a lot of time for the admin running it and he didn't get to enjoy the game. -

Yeah, why people are so bound and determined to take away options away is just beyond me. With that kind of philosophy you'll find yourself without your favorite version because a majority will want to take away your options. Live and let live, play on the servers you want... -
More civillian clothing.. Less military

I imagine this will change as it goes along. One of the possibilities is there will be 8 different rifles with a few shared ammunition types and even fewer magazines. Sorting through it will be hell... -

True, but the availability of it is in question, not it's usefulness. -
This is one of the let-downs for me in regards to the game. Everything is regenerative. All you have to do is wait for most of the items to respawn. It's a lovely idea, but in the end it's just "Let's kill em and take it!" Boy, this is a downer post...

I personally think this is one of the best reasons the game should be in open Alpha. For one, nobody but nobody is going to flush out any and all the possible avenues of hacking as cheaters will. And two, the cheaters may be comfortable in their perceived immunity, but I'd imagine when the Fix comes in a lot of graves have already been dug....

i wanna start hoarding ! whats up with persistent storage?
napalmdog replied to brumey's topic in General Discussion
Perhaps, but that's probably the root of my point; It's a game being developed and is currently at groundwork level and many of the core game features are not ones we can necessarily perceive. People want a playable game now and to a great extent it is, but there's a lot to still be done. I just think we need to be a little more patient as it's not like we're even having to sit on our hands to wait to even just get a taste... -
I don't think this was a mistake at all. Anybody who bought the alpha after everyone was told clearly by the creator that it was not going to be worth buying beforehand... Game fan; "give it to me!" Dean; "well, it's not complete. I don't think I should..." Game fan; "Give it to me!!!" Dean; "well, I can sell you a copy, but it's not a complete game. It'll change drastically and...." Game fan; "GIVE IT TO ME!! Take my money!!!" Dean; "okay, but I told you; it's an Alpha, it's not complete. Things will change drastically..." Game fan, throught frothy lips; "GIVE!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!" I hope it's a lesson that anybody who is really thinks the game development isn't moving quickly right now. I personally don't know how a game is developed. But I am a mechanic and realize things have to come together in a certain order. If I tell you I'm building a new bicycle and it's in development, would you buy just the frame from me, knowing the wheels, handlebars, etc. are months away? That is what I feel I have purchased. We have not so much bought DayZ as it is We have bought into DayZ. I wish more people would realize it....

Content of this game as it is in development to a complete product is highly unlikely to be linear to the desires of 'players'. I think this is one of the biggest fallacies that we consume ourselves with. We are testers, not players. We can play when the product is finished... -
I'm just going to take a moment and say my point wasn't meant to be inflammatory. It was meant to show that a crossbow can be a very powerful weapon, that's all. You don't have to be so hot in the response...
-
Well, not necessarily so...

Say you want to talk to someone farther away. Wouldn't a bullhorn be great and intimidating?
-
My thoughts exactly!

I am hoping at some time that tools are released to allow player-created maps. Does anyone know if there are any tools currently out to lay out a map geographically that would translate over? Will it carry over from Arma 2's tools?

Good thoughts and observations. I was making mental note last night on the posts and what people are/were expecting, what we think we do and how we act in-game. One fact is that as immersive as it is, it is still a game. How do you put an incredible overwhelming importance to a player's life? Heck, do even we want that? Currently I see a majority of people playing it as the most long-running, complex and political deathmatch ever conceived. It is missing an element that might come magically one day to release the paradigm. I have thought(and still think) it is the development of zombies to be a threat, but it could be something else. One thing's for sure though; I believe it has shown people do not know what they truly want. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVGINIsLnqU -
Then I'll start down that path. Initially with the current stage of development I'm only worried about geology(Hills, valleys, plains) and geography(Wooded, Open Country) and where roads and towns would be. With that all in mind how does everyone feel about map size? I would personally play Utes on the off occasion for some variety...
-
@Barom. In a way it is. I want to design a map from the literal ground up...
-
You know one of the things I love about the current state of the game and all the Kos? It's when they change the zombies and they start stomping on the players and suddenly they're whining about how impossible it is to play now... It makes me weep the tears of joy, like a woman!

When Does The " ALPHA!" Excuse End?

Yep, had that too. Lots of life blown away on Super-Dodgeball and Mario Bros 2... -
When Does The " ALPHA!" Excuse End?
napalmdog replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
The thing is it's not just a fanboy excuse. It is what is. A work in progress at the developer's judgement and definition of Alpha. Yes, it may also be viewed as something troll-like to say also, but that's the breaks of participating on a forum. And hell, I bought the alpha too because I'm a fan of DayZ. Getting hot because it's not moving along fast enough just sounds pissy and probably illicites any number of 'poke the bear' responses. Like say.... "Alpha!" -
When Does The " ALPHA!" Excuse End?
napalmdog replied to [email protected]'s topic in General Discussion
Ok, so I'm an avid gamer. Been so since the Atari 2600. And through that history this game is my first history 'playing' an Alpha. And with that experience, I know this is 95% of this community's part in an Alpha too. That said, get off your horse and understand it's a work in progress. If you are asking "When does the Alpha excuse end?", then you have no concept of game development and should just walk away... -
DayZ - Just a Game? Or also a pretty cool Social Experiment?
napalmdog replied to TheDoctorInDayz's topic in General Discussion
Kind of, yeah. Any ideas why? I think it would go a long way to explaining why the game does this to a lot of us as I've always found it odd myself...
