I thought about a 3d-tetris-version :-) but I agree, it would be too much. But a refined DeusEx version I'd like :)

Blank ammunition (bandit safeguard)
liquidmind replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
When thinking about how poison and infection could be used as a weapon, I thought that your own memory would server you. If you get a water-bottle, it should only tell you wether it's filled or empty, but if you disinfected it or infected consciously, that should show next to the name, but only for you. Everyone else should just see it as water. The same could apply to the state of a gun. If you pick it up or get it handed to, you can only see that it is a gun. If you check it closer, you might get how many bullets are loaded, but not what type and if it is visibly broken or not. When you shoot and it jams or breaks, you see it as broken. Having to take a closer look isn't that much, but if you got it handed by someone, you think would give you a working one, you might not check. As a general rule of thumb: if you can't possibly know about it, you shouldn't have the information in the game. -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
liquidmind replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
there is a lot of wrong vocabulary going on. glitch/bug/exploit - is something inside the game, not intended by the programmer. f.e. hiding in bushes to avoid hits of zombies; walls you can crawl into, etc. even tough: a bug is in general an unwanted behavior of the program, a glitch is an event not handled by the system, and an exploit is a bug, than can be used by a player to gain advantage. Cheating is any method used to gain an advantage in game, not intended by the game-makers. Hacking is accessing a Game/Program and changing it. Scripting ist using a script, that automates a specific hack, so you don't have to do it yourself TS in general, is just a Communication Program. You can use it to talk to friends who are playing another game. It has nothing to do with dayZ, so it is none of the above. You can use it to join a public TS-Server, everyone can use, to talk to the people on the server, so it is none of the above. But if you use it to talk to a specific group of people, with the intent of having no one else listening in on your conversation, going on a Man Hunt, it is an unfair advantage, that was not intended, and therefor cheating. But it is only that. Cheating by the use of an external aid. Since zombies agro on direct chat, one could make the point that it is always cheating. But as I pointed out one or two pages ago: the communication system in dayz mod is flawed, so looking for something else to do the job is understandable. If Standalone has a better system, that changes. -
What to do after you have the best gear?

Play another mod or wait for Standalone. You completed DayZ-Mod-Techdemo. There is nothing more to do. -
DayZ Alpha won't launch until launched !

read somewhere that Elder Scrolls Online took 250 developers 5 years. Even if you forget taxes and pay them only 1000$ a month, that's 250.000$ a month, 3 million a year, 15 million over the whole development period. And that's just the costs so the developers can sleep and eat. no office, no computers, no distribution, no lights and yes, no taxes... I think they needed more than 100k... And people think making a game is easy... -
Weight, encumbrance, stamina, speed
liquidmind replied to thegalakrondian's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I agree with the most abilities to be leveled, but guns have a huge problem. It should only be the players ability how good he is with the gun. I'd rather see crosshair removed, so you'd really have to aim, know the distance and know your gun. If beginners are worse in gun-control than pros, freshspawns have no chance of defending themselves against better players. So I really don't think there should be any leveling concerning guns. But I would accept that strength (how much weight you can carry) and your general condition (low health = less max energy = less stable gun) can affect how you handle the gun. Any "you are a noob so we just add random chance to miss"-method would fuck the game up imo. -
In Oring, there are small wooden boxes. You only see them if you are close and if you could craft them out of wood and metal, they'd make great stashes. I always wanted to be able to place backpacks under a tree and maybe cover them with a camo-net to further disguise them. But the more options we get to temporarily hide stuff, the better. always looking for "the tent" is boring. if you had to watch out for different types of tents. storage-holes, crates, boxes, backpacks, etc. things would be a lot more exciting.

Would be very nice if the option to mine for ressources comes into the game. Would make the process of getting your workforce to the mine a lot easier. Edit: And gaging... yes. just imagine an Ural full of players who don't want to be there. gaging them might help.

How to fix "BattlEye Initialization Failed"
liquidmind replied to Sharpboy21's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
For me, switching servers ususally helped. When I played private hives, often my update timed out. so I joined the fastest public hive server I could find, it updated and I rejoined the server I was playing on before. I always assumed it had something to do with the connection to the battle-eye server that somehow didn't take the redirects from private servers as well. But i will try your version If it happens again. -
It depends on the learing-curve. If collecting your gear along the coastline, can get you up to 80% of what's possible, it only prevents new-spawns from running north without gear. After they got their basic gear they can continue on foot to increase their speed-level or go by car. those who always go by vehicle, will not get faster movement-speeds. those who always go on foot, will be able to outrun those who don't. You also have to take the equipment into account. A fully geared player is more likely to carry more stuff around. having 2 rifles and a handgun alone should slow you down enough, so you aren't a threat to freshspawns. So lazy players who want to have 3 guns and go around by car, will be very slow. loner-snipers who go with minimal gear are the fastest and freshspawns are together with most medium players somewhere in the middle. But Training + Weight seems to be a fair balance to me.
-
agree! Walking-speed, alone, if you're good on foot, is 6-8km/h. in a group usually 4-6km/h when they are trained. A professional marathon-runner can make the 40km in 2 hours. providing up to 20km/h for professionals on 100m, 36km/h is the maximum speed. I'd say in standalone it would be fair to assume, that a regular human would start at about 50%, progressing upwards through the leveling-system. starting at 4, up to 8 km/h for walking starting at 10km/h up to 20km/h for jogging. (maybe endurance from 5km max to 40km max) starting at 15km/h up to 30 for short-term sprinting. (I'd love to have that. fast for up to 100m, but you cannot run or jog for a while after that.) Someone also suggested, several speeds you can toggle between. So you might run at 8km/h and go faster, but get exhausted earlier. Like you would in real life choose your speed according to how long you expect to run. No one would start a 2km run with sprint-speed. edit: looking at the figures again, starting at 50% is probably even too high. maybe walking 4, jogging 8, running 12 to start.

Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?

But a Hack is a program, that actively changes another programs values. TS does nothing like that. Saying TS is a hack, only shows lack of understanding about what a hack is. -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
liquidmind replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree that this is a problem. Considering how messed up the system is, I don't see it as a cheat at the moment, because the ingame-system just isn't as usable for teamplay as it should be and the distance and volume you hear people in direct can vary. I was one of the guys opening the "is TS cheating" discussion on reddit, arguing for it to be an unfair advantage, so I am entirely on your side. But considering what the ingame system is at the moment and that the zeds just go bonkers if you whisper over direct, I could not categorize it the same way as downloading and using hacksoftware. Of course, it is an unfair advantage. But categorizing it as Cheating is as wrong as it is unfair. People use TS because they use TS in every game and don't even think about why they shouldn't use it in DayZ. But it's as much cheating as using a online-loot-map is. that part of "unfair advantage" where the grey-area covers both cheating and gameplay... -
Don't Be Fooled by Other Players: "Bad Guns" are Hidden Gems!
liquidmind replied to applejaxc's topic in New Player Discussion
It is. Not a conscious one, but still. The decision not to think about the world and just take everything mami told you as a toddler for granted, is a choice. People who are too stupid to realize, that nothing another person can say, can have the power to hurt them, unless they want it to hurt them, deserve to get the lesson. As long as there are people offended, there was a good reason to say it. If there is no one offended, why the hell would you even bother to open your mouth? I get offended by people being offended. So don't be offended or you offend me! And I'm very practiced in self-defense when offended by idiocy. -
Why do you shoot unarmed players?
liquidmind replied to maninthewall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My few cents: It depends on where you shoot someone. Shooting someone unarmed, running around NWAF is entirely different to shooting freshspawns. I am usually not interested in the costal area, so I never meet unarmed players when I'm armed myself. But if you call it bandit-behavior, to go to the beginners-area and waste your endgame-ammo.. because they might find something later to kill you with is just paranoid.. log out if you are afraid. But killing bambis is just lame. -
Is using teamspeak 'cheating'?
liquidmind replied to Maloney (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Using TS certainly is not cheating. You do not change anything about the game to get a benefit of it. But of course, a team who communicates over TS fighting a Team that uses only ingame-communication, has an unfair advantage. As the Communication in the mod, let's face it, just sucks. I would not consider it cheating at the moment. As soon as the Communication ingame is so good, that there is no real need to switch to teamspeak, but people do it, to avoid being heard by others, than it is cheating. Masking your audio-profile is the same thing as masking your visual-profile by using an invisibility-hack. But as long as the communicationsystem is as bad as it is now, it's metagaming. -
character development as incentive [long]
liquidmind replied to _Anubis_ (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'd be very interested in the different types of skills they plan to implement. How they categorize. Will it be "good at cooking" "good at hunting" "good a repairing"? Or more like a recipe-based skill-system, where you are likely to learn new skills, the more you practice it? like f.e. everytime you cook a piece of meat, "meat-cooking" gets +1 until some mechanism decides that you have enough to go to the next level, giving you a new thing to do, like "Create a Stew", that can later be combined with "fill Food-Can" to create nutritional, food that can be stored for longer periods of time. I do hope that it is more than just to reduce the time needed to do something, but considering that rocket said crafting will be trial and error, I don't see how special crafting-recipes, that only work with a certain level, would work with that. People would get confused as hell, if they never knew what skill they can actually use and what skill they could use before they died the last time. How would a player react, that lived for 3 weeks, driving around in his car, being used to repair it all by himself, if he died for some stupid reason and had to re-learn everything again. Even if he got to his car and got back his stuff, he couldn't repair the car unless he re-trains the skill. At this moment, I'm only curious in how they will implement it, because I cannot imagine how all that would work together. -
Your character and location is stored in the "hive". Public servers are connected to the public hive, so if you switch servers, you keep your character. Private servers have either their own user-database or are connected as a small group in a hive. If you join and there is a character in the hive you are accessing, you load that. If not, you create a new one. I admit tough, that it is a bit difficult at the moment. Even if I filter for official servers only, I find some private servers in that list. Sometimes I have to join several servers to find one I like. edit: yeah sure.. short posts so you can answer first.. :-) I should learn to write shorter :-)

PAX East - March 2013 - Presenation/Q&A/Interviews/Articles
liquidmind replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
To bad the camera-guy was asleep during the gameplay-session... I understand that he was knocked out after a long day at PAX.. But still painful not to see all the things rocket talks about on the only "lets play with rocket"-video there seems to be... -
*knock knock* Sir! This is the Police! Open Up! We had a very concerning call from the developers of dayZ. Open the door Sir, We need to talk.

Haha. I have this habit of driving thoughts like that into the extreme.... Just broke own laughing, thinking wether one would rather kill himself, or wait for his pals to come online and push his wheelchair. Followed by the question, what happens if a wheel on the wheelchair is broken. Will the wheelchair-player be able to shoot from his chair while waiting for his friends to return with a new wheel? @Topic: At least in standalone, we'll probably get a far more complex system than the current one. Considering the leveling-system that was proposed, having a doctor who's able to permanently fix an injured teammate again, to a certain point, might even create a world, where a player who's permanently impaired ingame, might choose to take on his fate, rather than loosing all his abilities. His knowledge might be valuable enough, to motivate other players to push his wheelchair around and still give him back enough to make it worth playing for him. Interesting thought, how physical impairment vs. learned abilities will be seen in the future.

Don't Be Fooled by Other Players: "Bad Guns" are Hidden Gems!
liquidmind replied to applejaxc's topic in New Player Discussion
Don't forget individual gameplay! makarov is a great gun, if you headshot only. If you blast your gun to the chest of a zombie to "make it stop", like many beginners do, it's the worst choice for a weapon there is. Personally I think the g17 is the perfect handgun in the game. If there was an SD-version, even better, but with M9SD-ammo, at least the zombies don't hear me. The sight is awesome, headshots are as easy as they are with no other weapon except those with reddot-scopes. And the fire-rate is as high as it is with an assault-rifle on semi. Something I need, as I always use single-shot (like I would in real life..) The next thing is a players expectation. If you expect to meet a lot of players, you'd probably take the Lee Enfield, just in case. If you plan on going off-road only on a server with 3 people playing, you might stick with your hatchet. Lee Enfield Sucks against zombies. Kill one, Get 1million new ones for free. But it's by far the best weapon to kill another player while still looking for better gear. If you plan on getting gear by looting fresh-slaughtered players, you'd be stupid not to take the lee enfield until something better comes along. -
If what rocket said becomes reality, every player should be able to customize the face as he wants to. He'd even want everyone to be able to use his real face if he wants to. I don't know if that has been overthrown by now for some reason or if it's still on the table. As long as you can locally set your face, I'm ok with it tough. As long as there is no Face-DLC like "play hitman in tombraider multiplayer"-bullshit, I am fine with almost everything.

DayZ Alpha won't launch until launched !
liquidmind replied to [email protected]'s topic in Mod Announcements & Info
First sentence, First mistake. It is NOT Arma 2 engine. It is an entirely new engine, written specifically for DayZ. It is as much an Arma2-engine, as Arma3 is an Arma2-engine. It's several different builds. As rocket pointed out so many times, a mod can only do as much as the game allows it to do. Arma allows the developer to fall back to a huge amount of functions, that are in the engine, that dayZ just doesn't need, but that would slow down the game, as they could not be removed for the mod. The DayZ-SA engine, will allow a MMO-like client-server architecture, that is not possible as a mod in Arma 3. So no matter what, they have to make their own engine. Now they took the TOH-engine, which is a modified Arma2-engine, threw out all the stuff they did not need and added Arma3-code as well as custom code. They entirely remade the character models, skeleton, zombies, inventory, UI, items, map... Something that would not be possible using Arma 3 as the basis, as Arma 3 in it's initial release doesn't even support java-code to be put into the game, a thing needed for persistent open world games like dayz. tl;dr: It is NOT arma 2 engine. it's dayZ-Stanalone-engine! -
I don't really like it for the following reasons: 1) I am a fan of the invisible UI, I don't want any further icons, i want those that are there removed. 2) I do not like the game to tell me, how I should feel or how my emotional reaction to a situation should be. Being able to overcome shock and to keep a clear head, is something the player needs to be able to do, not something enforced by the game. (I don't even like the shaking hands, after a close-miss by a zombie. Either I am in physical pain or not. I don't want mental pain in the game) 3) I don't see why killing should affect your morale always negatively. There are people who get a morale-boost out of it, while others might even break over the guilt of having killed someone. It's just not realistic. I see that things like hunger, thirst, cold weather, etc. would affect your physical condition, keeping you from performing at a maximum. But I'd prefer to see that affect the maximum speed and the weight I can carry, not some artificial morale-counter. My hands should only shake when I'm freezing or in severe pain. All-tough I like your proposal with different states of physical health, I don't think that has anything to do with a players morale, or that a calculated morale should affect what you can do. In the end, it's me behind the keyboard, who has to find motivation to do whatever I do, despite whats happening to my character. My character has no feelings.
