Serious question regarding mod vs standalone
liquidmind replied to Kiriller's topic in New Player Discussion
As I have seen it so far. DayZ Mod is supposed to be the community-build, that includes all the changes the majority of the community wants. The private mods, develop own ideas, paralell to that, that might later flow back into vanilla or standalone. Once standalone will be released, I suppose a lot of the developers from Mod will try to switch to SA, modding there (as soon as possible). This will probably lead in to a similar situation we have now, where a BI-SA-Build, a community-sa-build and several private builds might coexist next to each other. I think every method of development, be it a professional company, an open community or a small private group, have their advantages and disadvantages. Spreading development over all those methods, will not only reduce the overall risks, but in the same time, increase the overall benefits. As long as all participants try to coexist and people don't start to pull every idea out of the pool to use it for their own gain, that's what I would want for the future of dayZ. -
Hello i need a guy who can tell me why i got this problem.
liquidmind replied to Aimblade's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
It's your graphics card. NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M has a benchmark of 953. Recommended graphic-cards have 4900+ http://www.videocard...GeForce GT 555M The laptop you bought was designed for office use, not for gaming. I have one of the most powerful mobile cards in my macbook pro and that doesn't give me a lot of performance to play, But at least it has a benchmark of over 4000, not less than 1000. -
The discussion here is about the wrong issue. It's not about wether this exact well defined set of cans, in the exact way it was proposed should be included only in this way, or no way at all. We all agree that more food is wanted. Most people disliked only a few of the cans, showing that devoting a can to a mod, in general, is not necessarily a bad thing, when done well in a non-cartoony way. The big question is, how we can create food, that has everything we all want. I personally think "mzly yzly" is not a good name for a drink. in english! Write it in Cyrillic letters on the can, give it some soviet design and call it "can (soda)" and no one will even notice, unless he knows. Some cans and packages have funny references, that are hilarious if you look at it in high res in a forum, but that get completely lost when reduced in size. leaving those out, keeping the references simple, might improve how they look and feel in the game. tl;dr: I don't think "yes or no" debate will solve the issue. We should focus on how we can solve it so everyone is satisfied, rather than deciding on which part of the community we should piss off.

Why is everyone who is for the cans acting as if it was a final decision to pull them out and never put them back in? All that happend was, that a step back was taken, to talk about it again and decide what to do. The way you feel about them beeing pulled out again, is the exact way some people felt about them being put in the first place. Your feelings in that matter are as important as theirs are. Looking at it from a larger perspective, there is no winner or looser in this matter at the moment. Just one decision that's been re-evaluated. All names let aside, I think f.e. the green-beans can glows too much when put into the map. When you see it on the floor in the supermarket, it looks less realistic as f.e. the can of beans. This doesn't mean it's a bad design. I would have preferred several can designs for every mod that has a right to be honored, where the best can be chosen, rather than taking the first that has been made and including it. I believe there are people out there who would have liked to participate in honoring special members of this community, who didn't even know about it, before the patch was released.

Why make instanced or underground bases?
liquidmind replied to Jeremiah Cross's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
"instanced" in this context only means that the base itself is not saved as a part of the map, but there is a "rabbithole" in the world, that links to that world. You would have to reload when entering the base, but as they are a seperate gameworld, they wouldn't affect the performance of the map. As I understand it, that's all about seperating it from the game. It doesn't mean that only the player who created it may enter. It only means that instead of transforming the map, adding more items to it, they might outsource those, so the performance stays the same. For the general need of underground bases. Ask yourself what a server would look like if you could only build above ground and everything you build stayed there forever. You couldn't play on any server that's online for a longer time, just because the amount of objects in the map slows everything down. -
not really. You just have to define where taviana lies in relation to chernarus. Then you take your boat in chernarus to the edge of the map. The loading-screen simulates the open-ocean-travel, respawning you on the edge of taviana map. You could require f.e. 5 full jerry cans in the boat, that are set to empty on arrival. You'd then need to refuel in taviana to get back. You wouldn't go by boat for days, but it should still make up for an hour of traveltime or more. I'd recommend an airplane :-) not really. Dayz Epoch runs on 4 or 5 different maps at the moment. They can be added to the same hive. So when you change maps, your gear stays the same. Saving the data from one map to another therefor isn't the real issue. Getting the vehicles over would require a link tough, as you could send the description and recreate it there. In standalone, when they are objects, it shouldn't be a problem anymore. At the moment they are strings tough, so it could be more difficult. The actual transfer between the maps wouldn't be more than saving your character with changed location data, leaving the server and logging back into it, on the other map, with the new location. Considering server-load this shouldn't use up more ressources than changing your clothes. One issue would be the vehicle spawn tough. People could abuse that, to get all planes and helis from all maps to their base. To decide how migrated vehicles behave, how long they exist and when or where they respawn isn't something to be ignored.
-
I think I talked about it in the official suggestion thread on reddit. (#2 or #3 it was). In general, you could add different maps to the same hive. In addition to the position, it would only have to save the map you are on. On spawning, you can choose which map you want to spawn at. After that, your character is, as long as he lives, bound to the location he is at, forcing him to travel larger distances. As every player can choose the map to start, players spread. This would allow for map-change, expeditions and provide options to further expand the world, without loosing performance by increasing the map-size. The distance between the maps on the virtual globe could tell how much fuel you need to get there. So closer maps are easier to get to than maps further away. Islands can only be accessed by boat or plane. I think it would be a neat way to balance serverload while providing a world large enough for everyone. Only problem would be, that an area that has already max players on it, couldn't be traveled to, if there is only one map of each type in a hive. Allowing a list of different maps to choose from might be an option.

The Can Issue Explained - "What went wrong?"
liquidmind replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
People still confuse the Cans to be the main issue here. As someone who spent most time on reddit lately, I can tell you that the overall opinion on reddit over the last weeks and month was, that no funny references are wanted in the game. In the meantime, The people who were around this forum most of the time, formed the opinion, that it was a nice touch and a good idea. In my opinion, the outrage was about the fact that most people on reddit thought it was clear to everyone, that "more russian" food is wanted, rather than references to developers. This lack of communication between the two groups caused the reddit group to think, that the people responsible don't give a shit about what their opinions are and that they are wasting their time caring for the game. The cans were just the trigger to give people the impression their opinion is not valued. Considering that there is a very strong "anti-reddit" trend going on in this forum, I can understand why many people feel like that. Considering how there are still forum-members insisting on it all being about cans being ugly shows why they might think there isn't even an attempt to understand their point of view. I do think tough, it was a good idea to pull the cans back out. It sets us back to the point where we should be. The point where we talk about it. It's the "no decision has been made" point, not the "you have to argue, why we should revert our decision"-point. It leaves both parties on the same level. it's just constructive. -
I do agree with that. But the Poll should last for at least a weak, so enough people can participate. It should be announced on reddit, so people who are interested can register and vote in time. There is no problem in having all the major decisions made in this forum. There is only a problem, when they are only accessible by a small amount of people. As long as everyone who wants to express his opinion, is entitled to do so, everything is fine. i would prefer a "what would you like to see"-debate over any "yes/no"-poll, just because it encourages ideas and in the end benefits the quality

did you try it lately? according to the changelog you should be able to pick up arrows and bolts. Didn't find a X-bow today and had to much fun with my machete to look closer, but in theory it should already be in there.

I made a thread on reddit about zombie AI. I basically said, like you, that sight should trigger aggro, but sound should only cause interest in certain directions. So sounds would direct them, but they'd only attack and pursue as long as they have direct visual contact. I also proposed, that grabbing would add to the immersion, as running right next to the zombies would be impossible, creating a larger area for each zombie to cover, blocking roads easier. In general, making zombies slower, but in a way that they build a circle around you closing in, rather than usain-bolt you through chernarus. I still like these zombies best. But then I thought, that the zombies, are the main part of the game, Rockets Game, So he should decide, in my opinion, how he wants the zombies to be. Rocket will definitely listen to the community, but I also believe he already has a very good image in his head on how he wants the zombies to be. He said he talked a lot about the virus-issues with his brother and I doubt that these were the only zombie-related talks he had lately. No matter how much I would love slow-grabbing-zombies, I am even more excited to find out what kind of Zombies Dean has in his Head. My personal AI-Preferences therefor are: 1) Whatever Rocket has in his head 2) Slow, grabbing, biting, classic movie zombies 3) improved, less glitchy, coordinated versions of mod-zombies

Don't get me wrong. I didn't say PVP in general is bad. I said people who shoot everyone they encounter, out of principle, just not to be shot themselves, ruin the game. Serious bandits, who face any revenge the other player will bring back to them, are an important part of the game. Just focusing on killing other players, dismisses so many parts of the game, that I just don't see how anyone could see that as playing the game to it's fullest tough. But playing just for the kills... I can get CS 1.6 for 10 bucks right now, and there are hundreds of servers where I can log in and go kill right on. If the kills were all you would seek in the game, you wouldn't play dayZ. There are other games more rewarding. But if you want to outsmart people and come out of a challenge as a winner, it's awesome. Ghillie-sniper with an as50 on freshspawns, just isn't all the game has to offer in my opinion. I had wonderful nights in DayZ not shooting anyone, just doing stupid stuff. It's a sandbox for social experiments. You shouldn't limit yourself to just one way of playing it. That's like running the same simulation over and over again.

WarZ is a game? I thought it was a failed ponsy-sceme... ;-)

In my experience, there aren't many hackers, there are just persistent hackers. I experienced servers, where 10 people got banned for the same violation, before a hacker finally took over. I really don't think that were 11 different people, where one got lucky, I think it was 1 hacker, testing the server, until he had everything set up to achieve his goal. I had a public server for 1 month myself, i had 2 Incidents of hackers in that time that I know of. Both didn't return after server-reboot. I think, compared to the number of players, there is not a large amount of hackers. But the ones there are, are a huge problem. It only needs 1 hacker to destroy a whole server. Whenever a battle-eye update comes out, you will find a notice that it has been hacked on the hack-forums, before you will find a notice about the new patch on battleeye.com; On youtube, about once an hour a video advertising free hack tools for dayz is released. And so far I learned more about how battle-eye and authentication in arma works accidentally while searching for BE-update, than I could ever find searching for it... If I got it right, hackers will always trick BE by inducing a change into the running process, effectively silencing battle-eye from calling for help, so if there is any chance of controlling the situation, it has to be over server-control, as any program that monitors what the client does locally, can be manipulated by people with enough knowhow to do so.

If anyone happens to lock this thread: this post is a worthy final statement!

My few cents: The 3 parts PVE, PVP, PVZ are the 3 main conflicts. all are important. But there is also Player AND Player, so shooting other players is not the only option there is. I hear the argument, that it's just a game and that the life counts nothing, very often as an explanation for PVP. I think that's utter bullshit! People who don't care if they loose their life or not, don't do the only thing that that definitely would save their own life. I believe the opposite to be true. "Bandit-Gameplay" And KoS are 2 entirely different things. KoS is not giving the other player a chance to do anything other than dying. That's the important difference in my opinion. There is no honor in killing on sight. There is no sportsmanship in that. If you think your characters life is worth nothing, go take the risk and take someone hostage or rob him of all his possessions. But selling KoS as gameplay in dayZ is just a very cheap attempt to blend over the fact, that dayZ isn't "just a game" and that for most people, there is a stronger emotional bond to their dayZ character, than to any other game they ever played before. DayZ can be so many types of games. But if someone wants a game, where he can shoot as many people as possible in as short of a timespan as possible, dayZ probably isn't the game designed to do that. But I am convinced, that the community solution, like "don't shoot freshspawns" is the way to go. Not any implementation that would hinder people from Killing on sight. Not to shoot on sight, has to be a matter of self-respect, not a matter of technical barriers. I have personally played completely immersed, as well as "just for fun", not caring wether I die or not. Both ways are possible. But I pity those who claim that a life in the game is worth nothing, because they are the few in the dayZ community who just didn't get why everyone is so freaking exited about the game.

Progression System in DayZ Standalone
liquidmind replied to BoaDrago's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
just a short question in between that "what would" talk: isn't "the inventory screen is your level" one of the few restrictions rocket made from the beginning? Is there even any sense in talking about a leveling system? I thought it was off the table. Just wondering. -
Must have been luck... My first deerstand greeted me with a shiny metal object blinking in my direction.... I haven't given it out of hand since. Fuck the hatchet!

Because when you change something, and alarm-bells go off, you go a step back. You don't plug your ears and go on. At least not in a group. I personally think he did the only right thing in that moment. (and I was following reddit and the forum, paralell, at that time) Quotes like that are just stupid. Go stand in the corner! If you don't value other peoples opinion, go away! And the other side said "at least make a vote before you put it in". All comes back to "listen to the other side, before you make any decision" Beans on the forum don't say anything other than how many people gave their beans. There are over a million dayz players and the active community are several thousand people. Have you read what /r/dayZ had to say about it? Or is their opinion just not important, because you don't care about reddit?

Prequel: after a furious inferno of "what have you done" and "how dare you to criticize" rants by large parts of the community, Razor pulled back changes to calm parts of the community, infuriating others. Rocket aided to the help of the few asking themselves what the fuck was going on, by telling everyone to calm down, and slap seals instead of eachother, as he sees it an issue of miscommunication within the community. this thread: The community doing the walk of shame, where some already try to get rid of their guilt while others still throw some final punches, but all in all, people try to grow back towards each other again, and leave "the can incident" behind. Like people wouldn't complain about the robbed opportunity to burn it down themselves.

You might wanna watch jack frags tutorial about how to build your own steam-box. He aims at £300, and also includes where to get the hardware. If you look on ebay or have your own case you can use, you might make it close to 250. Just don't save money on the graphics. they are currently the most important component.

I had the same problem yesterday. I also have a problem, when i start steam, that it takes 2-3 attempts to log in. Both seem to be caused by my internet-connection that they don't seem to have liked. I rebooted my modem yesterday, after battle-eye didn't update, Steam started immediately afterwards and BE-Update worked on the first attempt. I know a bit about computer, but I couldn't tell what in the world could cause 2 programs not to get a connection, while everything else just works fine. tl:dr: try rebooting your modem. don't know why, but it worked for me.

Usually when you install over steam, you have to run each game (arma II, Arma II OA, Arma II OA beta) once, through steam, so that the CD-KEY is written into the registry. If you use dayZ through another launcher than Steam (I have no experience with that, as it is still new), I'd recommend you use dayZ Commander as I personally find it more reliable than PlaywithSix launcher. DayZ Commander then should detect your installations and show you any updates possible (+ allow you to play other maps). It should bring everything to the right version. (except battleeye, but that's another story)

I agree that the reaction of many was plain stupid. Also the reaction of some in favor of the new cans was just plain stupid. You cannot take out the most stupid arguments another group brings up, take them out of context, and say that that's the opinion of everyone and that they are all idiots. I for myself did not complain about it destroying the game at all. I was pissed tough, that the decision to honor a specific group of people, and the way on how to do it, was made in a very small group, in a very short time, without even seeking the opinion of the larger community. the biggest shame about the whole incident is, that the (in my opinion) rushed decision to put the new items in this update, combined with the obvious communication-issues, caused all the great things about the upgrade to be overshadowed by childish nonsense. I consider this update to be the biggest step taken so far in improving zombie AI. They have never felt so good to me before. They really zigzag less, they only damage after they hit, they don't do damage when running into them. It makes the whole struggle so much more rewarding, when interpreting the zombies behavior actually allows you to tell what he is up to. Once I found the machete, my hatchet was banished to the toolbelt. I even left a few guns on the loot-spots just because I had so much fun playing with it. Ever seen a ghillie with a machete? that's me! tl;dr: if you don't want the monkeys to throw with shit, make sure there isn't any around them.

Who wins what? who missinformed whom? If you say that there were only wrong information on reddit, it gotta be someones fault that the correct information didn't make it there. I personally read reddit, twitter and tumblr every day and the forum 2-3x a week, as there isn't that much new content announced lately. I didn't get any information about there even being plans of including cans to honor anyone, before the mod was released. In my opinion, you are right saying that it was a matter of misinformation. But it wasn't that "the reddit community spread wrong information", it was that the correct information wasn't avaliable to them in the first place. That's the issue that's to be addressed, not the fact that they made wrong decisions out of having the wrong facts. Everyone makes wrong decisions, given the wrong facts. It cannot be, that one part of the community just ignores another part. No matter if one part is larger or smaller or more or less involved. The important aspect of a community build in my opinion is, that everyone can express his wishes and concerns. The goal is therefor to enable that for the future. not to evaluate who won. Today, we all lost.
