  1. a real bandit should have a code of honor. If you beg others to help you out with a weapon after respawning, you are not a bandit. if you say hello ot that guy over there, take a pistol out of his backpack, force him to lay down his gun and hand over his possessions, leaving him behind with nothing but a morphine pen and a bullet to the kneecap.. then you are a bandit. a pretty impressive one. bandits don't hide under a tree in a ghillie. Bandits sit next to the road, beside a campfire, waiting to rob the next guy that comes along and is stupid enough to stop. I'd even go so far that I'd say, killing a bandit is not hero behavior, as the hero should prefer to end a robbery by forcing the bandit to let the survivor go, making himself a controlled retreat when the survivor made it away. A bandit robbing someone doesn't deserve to be shot on sight. Someone shooting noobies at the beach does. And I think if Bandits and Heroes agree, that a certain way of respect towards each other, we maybe have something like a standoff one day, where instead of shooting each other, a solution is found and both retreat. But I'm dreaming a bit here :-D
  2. Rocket said it in an interview. I think with shannon, but I am not quite sure. He said in the beginning, they have to make regular changes, so they have to have direct access to the serverfiles and to be able to change them at any time. If they give them out to private hives, they have to roll out a new public release for every change. So just for the matters of being able to develop faster, for the first months there will be no server-files. As soon as the server-technology is stable and they continue to work on content, they allow servers. He said the more server the better. He wants competition so the best server-hosts offer the best gaming experience possible.
  3. I think the duct-tape idea is around for a bit now. Attaching flashlight to lee enfield was the first suggestion in that matter a while ago. I think it was in suggestion-thread#1 that matt lightfoot made on reddit. I do not think that using 1 roll of ducttape + 1 flashlight on 1 lee enfield, would make the flashlight fall off due to recoil. It would offer a modding-option to basic civilian rifles, that could change, that everyone tries to get a military rifle as soon as possible. There have been lots of requests for more civilian and less military grade weapons, so including the chance to mod them, would be beneficial I think. But of course you can't ducttape a Sniper-scope on your shotgun and expect it to be precise. flashlight and knife would be an option tough, given enough tape to hold it.

    New 'suggestion' board

I think divide and conquer is the only chance to handle a project that big. Threads that handle different, specific, issues. One at a time, where everyone can participate. Then browsing through the entire thing, taking out all the suggestions and making it into a survey And using the survey data, to evaluate how strong individual suggestions are favored by the community. Downside: it's a shitload of work, and whenever I tried to implement that anywhere, I ended up being the one browsing through everything myself... I'm playing with the Idea for a system for discussion, that is based on single expressions that can be referred to, validated and commmented in a multidimensional tree for a while now, but so far I cannot completely get my head around it. so many dimensions. Isn't that rather for bugs, than for suggestions?

I will pay YOU $20 for the life of...

Still.. it said "confirmation of death", not "confirmation, that you killed him" So however the death happend. (as long as no cheats are involved) The required person died and it is clear who the first person reporting that was. Bitching around for it not turning out the way it was supposed to is cheap. When you make a deal with the devil, don't complain that he takes your request by the word, not the intention. :-) What would banditry be, if you couldn't betray all sides?

    Survey results are in!

I feel the same way. The poll from yesterday showed, that the likes and dislikes where distributed evenly over both parts of the community. Still there are some people who insist, that it was a conflict, where the forum, all togehter, wanted the cans, while reddit, all together, bashed that down. I do agree that this negative trend exists in both parts, but the constant "the others should shut up and go away"-elitism is stronger in the forum, than it is on reddit, in my opinion. I believe that to be the case, because the forum-community is smaller and closer than the reddit-community is, and the feeling of "us" is a lot stronger here. But no matter who has that elitism. It is wrong. Everyone has a right to participate in the process, if he wants to. But no one has the right to exclude a whole group, just because he doesn't like the the opinion, he thinks they have. Actually, Rocket's mod brought BI so many extra sales for Arma II that "investing time and money" is a bit of an overstatement. DayZ, as he developed it, was ment as a tech-demo (as he said in many interviews) to show the possibilities of arma engine for consistent, multiplayer sandbox games. It was a proof of concept, from a Developer. As well as a lot of know-how and code from arma III development was put into dayZ. A lot of the data and experience collected with dayZ flows back into Arma III. Dean's military and software background, make him the perfect candidate to help with motion-capturing (which he does since he started working for BI). His Goal with dayz was very well defined, so he doesn't have completely free hand on this, as the general goal is already defined. Considering how Rocket got his job at BI, what freedom he claims to have and how BI uses his knowledge in other processes makes your view of the situation look "sadly deluded", not the believe that a company might actually have faith in a person.

    Spanish have no voice

google. 32sec. http://forodayz.com/ But the development-language is english. The company is from czech republic, the developer from new zealand and the team from all over the world. I personally speak german, but write and speak english even on german servers. I do see the problem of uniting the different languages tough. Supongo que tienes exito en la integración de los que hablan español en nuestra comunidad mundial. (hope that was correct, my spanish is horrible)

    Hatchet and the main weapon.

Dean said several times, that he would love a zombie game with detailed melee. But as they are "just" redoing the arma engine, not writing a new engine on their own, and there is currently no melee in arma, I honestly doubt, that there will be a very complex melee-system in standalone. There also isn't any melee planned in arma 3 as far as i know, so there is no code they could take from that. I think all of us would love to replay some walking dead scenes, cutting off arms and legs of zombies. I don't think they will be able to include that. In my opinion, if someone managed to make a great melee system, with zombies you could cut into pieces, that alone would make it a game millions of people would play, no matter what else there is in it. It's just such a big feature done correctly.
  9. sounds like it almost made a screenshot of your first death... few seconds freeze for an achievement... don't know if that's worth it. Can you turn that off in steam?

I will pay YOU $20 for the life of...

this request doesn't state any requirements concerning name-changes, videoproof or the kill having to be done after a certain date. The Bounty is given out, for the first one to bring "proof of the sympathizer Steak and Potatoes' death." It doesn't even say that you have to kill him for yourself. The only requirement here was to prove his death. Inception fulfilled these requirements. Not paying him would be a breach of contract. According to international law, usually any contract made, is to be seen in favor of the party that didn't draft it. Any requirement not included into the original agreement therefor are risk of the party who drafted the contract. Not to mention, that a huge amount of movies should have shown us all, that not paying the guy you hired to kill someone, is usually a very very bad idea. :-) (edit: yeah, yeah.. i know, no contract may contain any illegal action anyway, but anyone seen a courthouse in chernarus? didn't think so!)

Why make instanced or underground bases?

The instance should be accessible by everyone, otherwise this would really kill the immersion, as it would provide a 100% safe spot. The argument about server-change is very good tough. People would want to log out in their base, but if they log onto another server after that, the base might not even exist there. Considering server-hopping, i thought that it might be solved by saving the position on each server, so when you start on a new server, you have to start back at the coast. this wouldn't solve the issue tough, as it would stop people from continuing to play on another server, while it would allow even easier server-hopping, as you'd just need to stay in your base on your server, log into another, loot, log back and unload. no running whatsoever required. Definitely an Issue that has to be looked at very close. having bases as separate zones was suggested as a measure of balancing the server-load, as no server could handle 100 complex over-ground bases. Just too much detail. The loading time is a compromise therefor and wouldn't be as long as regular loading, as the sub-world is a lot smaller. Considering that, it is more comparable to having zombies spawn in when players get close. There is only a finite way of solving these issues on modern PCs so that it runs well. Can-designs on the other hand, have an almost infinite variety of possibilities, that don't affect performance in any way. This argument, at that point, is nothing more than pouring fuel into the fire. Let it go. please.

    Shovel (new weapon/equipment)

I think having a few larger axes, that are common, might help to find a quick start into the game. Once you have a woodcutters-axe, you should be able to defend yourself. I could imagine, that using a shovel, you could vary the length of the animation. the same for axes. using a small axe, might take 5 hits on a tree (5x sound), while a large axe might use only 1 or 2 hits. A larger shovel could therefor improve the speed of building. But the larger tool cannot be transported that easily. If you had a large axe, a large shovel an a large toolbox, which all take up 10 slots like a main weapon, your inventory is full, just wearing the essential tools. I think it would be a good thing, to have to decide which tool you want to take with you. I don't like the notion, that there is 1 worst item and 1 best item, and you replace your items as soon as you find something better. A lone wolf, with a small camp, might only carry the essentials to move quickly. a large group might specialize. But it should be an active decision. I thought that was the worst part about the backpacks, as everyone just switched to the larger pack, due to there not being any disadvantage in switching. (i also want backpacks to spawn as "packed backpack", using 1/3 (rounded) of the slots it offers in inventory (24 slot would then need 8 slots to be carried in inventory and the option to "place backpack as stash" so it isn't deleted on server-restart.) Edit: Just a thought. Maybe someone with insight might be able to tell me if that is possible: There was a request for throwing-knives, ninja stars and stuff like that. Melee are currently "pistols" with invisible bullets. Would it be possible to take the knife model, turn it around 180° so the character holds it on the blade, not the handle, and define it as a pistol, that shoots knifes? I imagine, if the "shot" was 5-10m straight forward, then continuously dropping to the ground, should give a somewhat realistic implementation of throwing-knives. (or as a "last bullet", throw your makarov at the enemy) Could anyone who knows a bit about the code tell me if that would be possible in general or if there is something about the code i missed, that makes that impossible?

    The Notorious Can Incident

whats wrong with some people here. We all agreed that we take a step back and try to find towards each other, but I still read "but reddit won" "but reddit got what they wanted" "but I just told them how stupid they were".... there is no majority wanting one thing, there is no minority wanting another thing. That is what it all was about There is no united front fighting, like many here always imply. it is over, it ended. there is nothing anyone has to add to what happend. there is no need for anyone to analyze who did better or worse. there is no need in giving any credit to anyone, as we all failed together as a community. Some of us just wont stop failing.

    Shovel (new weapon/equipment)

I still like the idea of having multiple tools to do the same job. Like a firefighteraxe, a hatchet and a combat-axe f.e. firefighter axe could be primary weapon, as it is larg. hatchet secondary in inventory and combat-axe (the ones from military store) secondary with add to toolbelt feature. in the same sense, you could have a large shovel, a small shovel and entrenching tool. All usable as a weapon, but different due to their size. A large shovel as well as a firefighter axe would do more damage in close combat than the smaller ones, but as a tool, the smaller ones are better to carry around. 20x matches, 10x waterproof matches and zippo-lighter; pocket-knife, kombat knife, machete; could all be used the same way.

how to handle property - the issue when being offline

Personally I think any form that locks property to a player so no one else can access ist, is something for wasteland, not for dayZ. Never raised some very good issues here. If you play lone wolf, you could hide a tent or stash (neat boxes in Oring!!!) somewhere under a tree. maybe have a few of those. Very unlikely anyone is going to find it, if he doesn't stalk you. Having the option to camo them with a net or a bush, would add to that. Underground bases were suggested for larger structures, as they would solve the performance issue, as well as being hidden. If you find the entrance you could access it. Both is very disappointing for people who like a really nice camp in the woods. I personally see 2 types here. a) the camp. where you store your gear, your cars and start off into the day B) the fortress, where your clan hides and protects itself from rival groups. having boobietraps, locked door (wood, metal) with different difficulties, maybe a number-lock, so clan-members can enter would give a certain amount of protection. Another way to possibly defend your fortress would be the option to hire an NPC guard, that you have to give equipment to, and give a task to perform. Huge bases might need several for effective protection. Wether npcs should be used or not is a completely different thing tough. If all things fall apart, I think you can hire some asian players for a few dollars a week to guard your base :-D

    The Notorious Can Incident

As a former admin of a forum, I can only confirm that that's always the case a) People who volunteer to be mods, very often only fool around, not doing their work. But admins and other mods can see those, who would do it right. Those people usually don't volunteer. they just accept. B) they never say, but doesn't change the fact that it is hard. Especially during holiday season, when the kids are home all day. c) yeah.. that's mods... d) because no one ever asks the mods.... I was actually impressed when I saw the patch-note, that there were some people honoring the mods... in my experience people usually only blame mods for abusing their power... don't know how many hours I spent as an admin defending mods doing their work from stupid accusations.

An easy way to build bases

I've already seen people in vanilla dayz converting the building site in the north eastern part into a fortress. it only takes 1 wirefence to block the back entrance, and one bus blocking the main-entrance. A bus can only be entered from one side, so no one on the outside can get in, without destroying the bus and waiting for the wreck to disappear. The most simple suggestion I heard was barricading the doors of a house and entering through the first floor window with a collapsable ladder. doesn't prevent others from doing the same, but requires them to have a ladder. Having them completely protected, so they are impossible to loot would take out the fun.

    Easter Egg Question

I personally thought it would be nice to have a cabin somewhere, without loot, with a hatchet on the wall and a red barret (not lootable) on a hatstand next to the door and a can of beans on the table. (rockets cabin of course) I also liked, using the reload-animation for the hatchet as an idle-animation, when standing still for a while, holding the hatchet. Whatever easteregg there is, it should be nothing you stumble upon every day. There are already some nice eastereggs in dayz, like the tomb in taviana, the santa in cherno or the tunnel inside a tunnel in namalsk.

    The Notorious Can Incident

Playerbase not, but as there were about 800 people online on reddit and forum combined, during the peak of the incident, I think it should at least cover those who were most invested in it. Considering that both sides tried to convince everyone, that they are the majority, but the poll shows, that there is an even distribution of all opinions, over all media, we can at least know for sure, that a lot of us overestimated the popularity of our own opinion a bit.
  20. I agree. I think, handcuffs shouldn't have a 5min time-limit on them. As long as you have someone on guard, they should be on. At best a 2 or 3 hours timelimit, if guarded. Of course, if you can cuff someone to a fence and just take off, he shouldn't stay there forever. I could imagine that when there is no other player within 50m radius, the option to pick the lock with whatever could be added to the menu, so you can free yourself over an animation. I just think 5min are not enough to do anything serious with a guy. On the other hand, we should prevent bandits from using other player to carry their stuff for hours... handcuffs + backpack, a few bambis and you can carry a lot of loot over any terrain...
  21. Could we add the toilet-paper to the throwables table? It doesn't make a lot of sense throwing it, but it also doesn't make a lot of sense that you can't There was a thread in january suggesting more throwables, but no mentioning in it wether that's a difficult thing to do or not. I also like the suggestion that you should be able to throw your gun, as it would increase the damage makarov does :-)

Tired of KoS? Do something about it!

I personally think that the main issue in the debate is a matter of definitions. KoS/bandit/pvp are used very often synonymously, on other occasions to differentiate. In my opinion: PVP: Every hostile interaction between two players. Bandit: the concept of not looting your gear, but stealing it and taking it from people you shot. KoS: reducing the risk of getting betrayed, by trusting no one and shooting everyone you encounter. I would add "playerkiller" to that list, meaning: people who see the goal of their game in killing other players. Considering that: PVP is an essential part of dayZ. Bandits are an essential part of DayZ. BUT: KoS, even if reducing the risk of getting killed yourself, inhibits the chance of other player interactions, robbing yourself of a vital part of the experience dayZ might offer. It's everyone's right to shoot on sight, but knowing what the game can offer, I just do not recommend it. I also recommend to consider, not engaging someone over stalking him just to kill him, if the own survival is the most important issue. Playerkiller on the other hand, don't really add to the gameplay, as they don't wnat to take any items, don't follow any goal, except killing as many player as possible. Considering that these people get their joy out of the conflict with another player, I think dayZ is not the best optimized game to do so. It takes a long time to gear up and find other players. There are other games where a lot more action in a shorter time is possible. For those getting targeted, there is no option provided, that would let them keep their life. A bandit robbing you, might give you the option to surrender your gear or die. A playerkiller will only shoot to kill, nothing else. Considering that playerkiller-behavior is a less than efficient way for the shooter, as well as the most frustrating way to die for the victim, there is no actual benefit to the overall gameplay by those players. There is enough death without them. For the overall benefit of the game, those are the players I'd suggest to look for another game to. Not because I think their style of gaming is worth less. Not because I think they are idiots. Just becasue I think their concept of playing and the concept of dayz as a game, don't match as they would match with other games. The only reason, someone would prefer dayZ to kill other people over any other game is, that he wants the other player to be frustrated, angry and hopefully show that on side-channel. Having to piss off other people to feel good about yourself, isn't a human property I can admire tough. Edit: I forgot to mention that there are also player who enjoy messing with other players, but are always on the same servers, taking any revenge that comes to them, providing an excellent "Server-Asshole" for everyone to hate and even ally against. Those people, even if annoying at times, add to the gameplay. People who go on random servers to gear up just killing everyone they see, but when people start to hunt them, they just switch to a server where they are unknown, they are just poor trolls. Especially those who beg for guns on spawning, to turn against everyone as soon as they got what they wanted. Had my time when I didn't care much about dying. I used to greet players with "I wont shoot you, don't care what you do, but I'd prefer if you wouldn't kill me either" Interesting enough, I haven't been killed during that time very often. If so, usually by someone I didn't see or a russian who just didn't give a shit... Don't know why, but when there is russian talk on a server, there is a lot more pvp going on...

Serious question regarding mod vs standalone

I don't even believe they keep the code back because of hackers. Rocket said that they plan on updating the server very often in the beginning. Giving the server-files to the public would require them to make a public build for every change they make, giving everyone the time to implement it. Considering participation, I expect it to grow over time. Rocket said the first thing that's going to be finished is the character system, with just a limited amount of faces and clothes. I expect 3d-designers, making their own faces and clothes-models to be the first to jump onto standalone development. The more features are released, the more content the community will provide. Advancing the core features of the game, will be the sole task for rocket and his team for at least the next year. I expectStandalone Modding in about 2-3 years, to really take off.

    Survey results are in!

I think there is no question about how the way a poll is expressed can influence the result. I wouldn't even put too much into the result. What is remarkable tough, is that a) almost 800 people participated within less than 24 hours, showing that there was a demand to express an opinion, and B) that there is no side that is the majority, as the opinions are spread quite evenly. In my opinion, the poll shows that there is no side who should have gotten their will, as there is no side, that represents the will of the majority in this discussion.

    If you add the numbers from second question, it adds to more than 100% correct values are: 334 = 30.11% 259 = 23.35% 183 = 16.5% 9 = 0,8% 251 = 22.63% 73 = 6.58% Edit: found out that it was a multiple choice, so different calculation. apologies.
