Don't have a link handy, but aside from reducing server stress it was something like 'i want players to create their own story'. He told a story about how he was playing once, came up to an apartment building with a long line of dead zombies leading to it and up the stairs to the top floor. All the way to the balcony of the top floor and he looked down and saw a dead player with a gun (pretty sure he said it was a Lee Enfield). He was moved by that and wanted us to make our own stories rather than static ones.

No power, no automatic doors. Other than that they're working on it. There's an old dev post that shows an interior hallway of the 'new' hospitals.

True, I usually say zombie instead of infected, even though I know the 'difference'. As I keep saying, Zombie is an umbrella term for many things. The thing that makes zombies (again using the umbrella term) dangerous is not just that they can infect and make more (which is moot in our case), its that they Don't stop. Logic does not affect them. Most people and animals would flee from the sound of gunfire, zombies go towards it. If they do feel pain, they don't acknowledge it or let it slow them down. We've all seen the (undead) zombie in movies that's got a broken leg or some such injury where we would be in shock/crying our eyes out if we had it still give chase to prey. Trying to get back on point. An unarmed melee system would be good, and your idea of 'leveling up', or curb stomping a zombie sounds pretty good, what the Op posted (a few punches and you have a dead zombie system) does not sound good. Getting into a fistfight is generally a bad idea, add zombie/infected ontop of that and it gets worse. Even a healthy human being who flosses and brushes his teeth 3 times a day is going to have a mouth full of bacteria. Punch someone in the face and your likely to cut your knuckles on his teeth and get an infection. Your hands themselves will get injured in a fight, especially if you throw a punch wrong. If I can't handle a gun effectively or even open a can of food because I beat 3 zombies to death earlier in the day that's going to be a problem. I'd honestly rather use a pillow as a weapon than get in a fistfight. Pretty sure a 'shove' is already in the works or in the Standalone. More improvised weapons (brick, rock, pipe, bottle) would be welcome as well.

Well, yeah If I apply all 350 or so pounds of weight onto a narrow spot on your head your head's gonna be crushed. Unless I'm doing a handstand I can't put that much force/weight into my punches. My point was a couple of punches to the face or torso won't kill someone, especially not someone who feels no pain. Harry Houdini was quite famously killed with a punch (its said he suffered multiple blows actually), but that was not instant, it took him a couple of days to die after the incident. He was punched in the stomach, which is basically an unarmored sack of meat and skin housing several vital and not so vital organs, where as the skull or chest are protected by that sack of meat and skin ontop of bone. Houdini was sitting down, had a broken ankle, and didn't fight back and said stop. He felt pain, zombies don't, Zombie Houdini probably would have gotten up, and beaten/scratched the guy to death, broken leg and all. In this situation, Mickey is the zombies, sans holding back, I'd say Gorgeous George is the players but we're not that cockswollen.

military aircraft carrier with weapons in dayz SA? yes or no?
IkaikaKekai replied to Theheroicbandit's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
No, for an aircraft carrier standard OP is to ALWAYS be out of range of danger. They would not park it closer just to save fuel, it they did, anyone who could swim or find something that floats would try to get to the carrier, quarantine would break down quickly. The only time they park close enough so that someone can easily swim up to them would be when they are in port, and have armed guards and small craft watching the water. The only way I see it getting close to shore would be if they were under steam when an outbreak happened on board and they were overrun before they could shut down the engines or drop anchor, and then they would be beached on a sandbar/reef or the shore. -
Global bans... are they IP bans?
IkaikaKekai replied to evster15's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
If you were global banned, hacks were either detected on your computer, or your CD key was stolen. Won't speculate on number 1 but number 2 if true was more than likely because of a key stealer being downloaded on your computer. We see people bitching all the time about buying 6 copies of Arma2 CO and still being banned because their new keys keep getting stolen. Run your AV software, look up tutorials to make double sure that you've removed it if you still have it. If you actually hacked well the 'polite' response you'd get here would be 'go die in a fire'. -
Is a sound card worth buying?
IkaikaKekai replied to OfficerRaymond's topic in Technology/Programming
I'm not an expert, but I would say unless your job/hobby involves making music or anything to do with sound, your motherboard should be more than good enough. I really think sound cards are only good if your building a REALLY cheep/small computer that would only be used as the sound system for a restaurant or club or something, but still want some quality. -
OOoh oooh fact war! I love these. *clears throats* Technically, Romero called his 'zombies' Ghouls during production. Zombies are really people who's death's were faked, and usually kept as slaves. Occasionally they had brain damage from being buried alive for too long. But 'I fed your cousin a poison that made him look dead, then brainwashed and kept him drugged up as a slave' doesn't sound quite as 'I'm a badass, don't fuck with me' as 'I killed your Cousin by putting a curse on him, raised him from the dead, and he's now my loyal servant, fear my power!" Zombie's is an umbrella term now a days, and you gotta admit it rolls off the tongue a lot better than 'infected' 'rabid' 'mutant' or any other more accurate term. I mean we could just as easily be using the terms Ghoul, Jiang Shi (which strangely enough kinda sounds like zombie), Draugr, Revenant, ect.

Go find someone high on PCP or Meth and get into a fist fight with them. Let me know how that turns out. Or hell go watch a boxing match. Zombies (and humans for that matter) aren't fragile sacks of meat. They are rabid human beings, meaning they are crazy and don't feel pain, you do on the other hand, you're gonna break your own bones before you manage to kill someone with your firsts.

Zombies in SA will run indoors. Think their speed is okay but I tend to play stealth/ax murderer. Sometimes Ill just let them run to me and swing when they get in range. Don't think the average speed of zombies should change, but there should be 'rare' zombies that are either a little faster than players (not much but just slightly faster so eventually they'll catch up) as well as 'crippled' zombies that can't run. Think they should be randomly assigned rather than 'Oh that Zombie wearing jogging gear is a fast one' or 'that old woman with a cane is a slow zombie'. I do like the idea of some rare instances of zombies being deaf or blind. Would lead to some 'oh shit' moments that make you calm down afterwards.

First of all, you can't just grab a random pidgin and tie a letter to it's leg. Takes quite a few years of training and even then they usually only go to 1 place (you carry the pidgin with you and let it go, it goes home) or 2 (pidgin travels between two 'coops', takes a FUCKING long time to get them up to that point). There's no way you're gonna train a pidgin to not only know who the hell you want to send a message to, but also track them down wherever they are. Second, assuming Rocket huffs paint and thinks this is a brilliant idea (where pidgins replace the global chat, not adding in messenger pidgins at all, which ridiculousness aside is kind of an okay idea) I can just picture it taking 3 hours to get a letter that just says 'lol' on it. Third, I'm assuming you don't pay attention to the dev blogs, Global chat (for standalone at least) will be replaced with radios, which you will need to loot, and find the right frequencies.

Change to the Graphics engine to block forrests.
IkaikaKekai replied to Taiphoz's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Sorry to do this but my ADHD is kicking in, technicly that first picture is a jungle, not a forest, which by definition is usually much denser canopy wise than a forest. Back on track, yes some forests should provide more overhead cover, but I think that's an issue with the engine more than anything else. -
military aircraft carrier with weapons in dayz SA? yes or no?
IkaikaKekai replied to Theheroicbandit's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
1) I assume you mean a usable (driveable/pilotable, whatever) aircraft carrier. I see NO reason for this whatsoever. 2) Yeah because Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers have interchangeable parts that are just lying around Post Soviet backwaters. 3) Really? Because I thought our Navy went back to using Ballistas and arrows myself instead of Phalanx Systems and SSM launchers. 4) You do know how aircraft carriers and submarines work right? Aircraft Carries, and usually any other surface ship, won't have a submarine as a lifeboat. They wouldn't even have a minisub on board unless it was some emergency mission. 5) Yes because that crew of over 1000 people are really not necessary to run an Aircraft Carrier, it's all just an excuse to party out on the ocean on a big ass ship. A sunken/beached aircraft carrier, like the cargo ship that's washed up on shore, I can see, but a fully functioning/repairable ship? No. I think you've been playing too much BF1942-43. -
Someone's been playing GTA.

I would think it would probably only work on zombies, and then only if they don't see you getting in to whatever your hiding. Think the player should also make noise (depending on the situation) IE running a marathon to get away from both zombies and players and breathing heavily, if the zombies got close enough to your hiding spot they might hear and reaggro. Same for a player, say you run through a building try to escape a better armed bandit, 2 entrance room (rather than a deadend room) bandit might think you kept running out the door if he didn't see you, but of course could hear your breathing if he was paying attention. Also think it should be limited. Hiding in a kitchen cabinet? Not likely unless your 10 years old or something. Closets and dumpsters make the most sense really, would still have to be some minor tradeoffs, like you'd only be safe from zombies, but you'd be trapped if they saw you go in, if a Player unloaded into the dumpster or door of the closet you're fucked. I'd also have them make a small amount of noise (bit more with the dumpster).

Question about graphics for SA
IkaikaKekai replied to Deathwind (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Think it might average out. For the Mod I believe most of the calculations is done on the player's end, but the SA will be done mostly on the server end. It SHOULD be better, but you never know. -
SA: Suggestion for terrain side effects
IkaikaKekai replied to Frytek's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Might be a good thing to add on later on, like slogging through mud will slow you down a lot, as well as give a chance to give you say trench foot or something over long periods (if they add hygiene to the game). -
Off Map / Out of Bounds Vehicles
IkaikaKekai replied to splinter2k's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Are they actually in the Debug plains (as in beyond the boundaries of the map) or are they just at the very edge of the map but still on it? -
I wasn't implying that the game expos were by any means free for showcasers, or that they were just there to be there. Just that aside from the expos they have not spent money on hyping either Standalone or the Mod.
-
The fans (and the mod for the most part) have done most of the hyping to be honest. Yes they've gone to some tech shows to show it off a bit, but other than that they've spent no money to my knowledge on 'hyping' DayZ. They haven't paid, That Youtuber who I shall not name to prevent flames, or that other Youtuber who won't be named to prevent flames, or Diddums, or anyone else to hype the game for them, or even asked them, they've done it for free (and in some cases did what they could to 'dehype' the game). They haven't spent any money marketing the game (as of yet, and I frankly think they won't need to). I mean look at GTA5, they've been running ads for the game for almost a full year. What does Rocket do? Go to a few Gaming Cons to show off the current build, and occasionally tweet about something added, removed or fixed. Bohemia isn't EA or Rockstar, they don't have the money to 'hype' their games. How many Ads for any of the Arma games, or any of BIS' games have you seen? I've seen none.
-
As far as I know, the DayZ mod is being updated by other modders and community memebers, and Rocket has almost nothing to do with it anymore other than giving his OK for certain updates. I don't have a link for the Mod's 'next patch notes' but they're on this forums. Try searching for Change Log. Features for Standalone usually change hourly. There's no set price for the Alpha of Standalone but it will be a lower price to reflect that (sort of like minecraft). It's been said around $15-20 so hopefully its in that price range. IMO it would be worth it at $30 for the Alpha. Even if it had a surprise release tommorow (9/17) I would still buy it, right before I go to gamestop to pick up my copy of GTA5 and disappear for a week just so I have my foot in the door. Dunno for the Mod, for the Standalone I think it's around 30? Some Devs get traded out to work on the other IPs of BIS and vice versa. The Mod (I was corrected) is still in it's Alpha. Standalone is in PRE Alpha. When you consider most game companies that do public testing don't even do that till the Beta and there are still shit tonnes of bugs, get over it. It's the nature of programming. You get the Zombie to stop walking through walls, and somehow that makes all guns play the Iron Man song after the zombies are fixed (kind of dramatic but I think it's apt). TL:DR? They're working on it. And what do you think as soon as they release the alpha they're just gonna stop working on it? There will probably be nearly daily updates after the release to fix bugs that pop up, and they'll add in things as they get completed, or wait for a 'weekly' release to add in things. Not sure what you mean by list of things we can do for the game. DO you mean a list of things we can do in game or do you mean what do we have to do to buy the game?

Would that even be legal?

Ciphers for codes would have to be made out of game or without a game mechanic, otherwise someone could simply get lucky and loot the right cipher or a book's worth of Ciphers and just listen for broadcasts all day. My suggestion with the radio key to transmit Morse means a button to push to make the beeps, not a cipher that would automatically change text or voice into dots and dashes. While you'd still be vulnerable to 'channel surfers' it would be a bit less dangerous than them stumbling up on, '-oved the base near Polana Factory in the woods.' If it was in Morse they would have to know Morse, and get a good majority of the message and 'translate' it on the fly, or might even just be mistaken as static and ignored/move on to the next channel.

Consolidated Weapons/Equipment suggestions
IkaikaKekai replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Was browsing around on Cheaper than Dirt when I came across a revolver called The Judge. Chambered to fire both .45 Long Colt and .410 Shotgun shells from an extended cylinder. I would like to see a few weapons like this, where you could load either a small gauge shotshell or a large caliber bullet (they had other guns, mostly leaver actions that could do the same thing). I don't own any guns nor am I an expert on them beyond what I learn on the internet after seeing something 'cool' in a game and wanting to know if it's real or not, but could you do what Fallout:NV did? And by that I mean say you have a .357 revolver, but you could also fire .38 Special rounds from it without any sort of mod (like how the DE can fire .357/.44/.50 with a barrel change out and other mods in between). Not to make it too easy, but make it a little easier if you find different types of ammo. For example, it's been suggested many times to add in single shot flare guns, quite a few of these can chamber a 12 gauge shell and fire it (while not recommended due to the flare gun being made mostly of plastic). Just a curiosity and something to bring up to the Dev's attentions if they're still watching these fourms. -
Beans sir. In addition there should be 'key switches' on the ingame radios that would allow us to transmit in morse code. Be a subtle way of transmitting info without someone channel surfing and picking up on conversations.
