Yes. I've heard it at night as well a few times recently on different servers. I keep thinking someone is stalking me and it doesn't quite sound like the birds in the day to me. It's probably just my imagination getting the better of me. Maybe there are night birds in the woods, like owls or something. I don't have NVG and make sure I play on servers with no tags at night so I can't see if anyone or anything is around me. I've only heard it in the woods. It sounds like a person. Shit, the hairs are standing up on my arms just writing about it. It is seriously creepy and.... I love it!

I honestly don't care whether there is side chat or not. There are a couple of servers that have it enabled. I think it should be up to the server admins and listed in the server description so people can choose to either play there or not. I haven't played on a side chat server in a long, long time, but I have to say the entertainment value is high. I once hid my character and remained logged in to watch an ongoing argument while I ate dinner. It was hilarious ! When I want to play in super-serious, immersion mode I'd prefer a no side chat server. This mod has a very diverse player base. The elitists would rather die than accept this, but it's a good thing. There should be choices, to an extent, that allow for player diversity. Allowing side chat to be enabled as a server admin's option isn't really that big of a concession as compared to stuff like PVP punishment mechanics in the grand scheme of things.

I love playing at night by myself. Granted I've been playing for awhile and know the map and where loot spawns in buildings pretty well. What I've noticed is that on some servers I enter the lighting has changed. Sometimes it looks like gamma has been cranked up server side. I'm finding more moonlit servers as well-not that it helps much when traveling in deep woods. I have one character with NVGs that I play when I'm looking to hit higher value military areas where players are more of a threat. But I'm finding that I tend to use my minimalist character more often than my geared guy to play at night alone. I enoy the sense of creepiness in the dark woods and the occasional jump scare of a zombie you can't see suddenly screaming in your ear.

I bought another copy of ArmA strictly so that I could play solo, in the night, with minimalist gear. My original account is used to partner up with my husband's character. I'm finding it pretty fun. I'm going on my 3rd night (I think) in this life, (my second due to an unfortunate Cherno clock tower incident), using no weapon but a hatchet. I avoid other players like the plague. It's not that hard, though, considering gun-nuts tend to make a lot of noise wherever they are. I've gotten pretty good at playing Z-fetch. Empty cans and bottles have become one of my favorite things to carry. I sincerely hope that having the ability to play alone remains a viable option in the standalone game. Playing late at night, alone, with all the lights off and only the sounds from the game can get really creepy. I swear when you are in the woods alone in the dark the game generates the sound of someone following you. It can be seriously unnerving. Maybe someone actually is following me.

Some Info on the Inventory System for us Noobs!!!
azrael72 replied to RavenX (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
You can also transfer items using the list of items without dropping them. Because they do tend to disappear sometimes. -Open your inventory, scroll, or click on backpack and click 'open bag'. -You will see an inventory count to the left and/or right of each item and at the upper part of the little window it should say 'Alice Pack 10/20'(or whatever) telling you how much space you have left. Click on item picture (once!) to highlight it or click on item in list. -The numbers to the left of the items are in your backpack, the numbers to the right are in your front slots. You can use the arrows that show up to the left and and right of the inventory item to either move stuff into your front slots or move them into the backback. You have to watch the label on the window, by the way. If you are looking at, say a fire, and bring up inventory the label at the top of the window will say fireplace. If you use the item arrows to the left you will be dumping items into the fireplace. Make sure if you have to transfer stuff around around to make space for something you want to pick up from the floor you shift yourself away (to where you no longer see the little green gun symbol) from that area until you work out the space you need. The arrows will also work to transfer items from one backpack to another. But only between 2 backpacks. -
Do you believe in being trusting of other players?
azrael72 replied to newb (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
I've gotten pretty good at avoiding other players when I play alone. When I do, on rare occasion, stumble across someone - actually it's more often the case that they stumble across me - I alert them to my presence by speaking calmly and in as conversational a tone as possible. This has diffused several tense encounters. I offer help if they need it, food or gear that I can spare and in most cases go on my way. It probably helps that I tend to not carry rifles. I keep my hatchet armed 98% of the time and carry a side arm just in case I'm in a particularly hairy situation. I've only had one kill, a bandit in self defense, since mid-May. I don't have much of a history of playing multiplayer shooter games so I've never developed the personality disconnect necessary to kill people because they have better stuff or because I think it might be funny at the moment. To me, personally, it denotes a lack of integrity and general principles. I'm perfectly capable of finding my own stuff thank you very much. I know other people feel differently and play accordingly and that's fine as well, though I may not understand it. Ultimately I don't really trust anyone, because you really can't in this mod, but if I can't avoid them I try to treat them the way I would like to be treated. If I die because of it, I go down knowing I was the better person, dust myself off and try again. -
Does the hack really stick to the player across servers? If he were to leave that server and join another wouldn't he be back to normal without losing all his gear? I feel so bad for this guy. -I guess they tried that already. Sorry, I didn't read thoroughly...and I can't delete my post (why is that?). I hope someone can help these people get degoated and debunnied. I suppose they just have to wait to starve or dehydrate.

Weird for sure-AI or not. I probably would have followed them for awhile just to see what, if anything, would happen. -
Green Mountain exploration party TONIGHT
azrael72 replied to KingRedemax's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Just to warn you guys on 2 different servers at night, (and in the day for a few minutes before I gave up), with or without NVGs, just looking toward the tower would probably be enough to trigger an epiletic seizure. The GFX glitches have been insane for me up there. Good luck though! -
Can't see the same servers as friends?
azrael72 replied to Smole388's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It happens to my husband and I sitting across the table from each other. Proximity doesn't seem to be the issue. We're using DayZ Commander and/or Six Launcher at the moment. We used to have over 2200 servers, now it's just 500. I can confirm as well that filtering doesn't seem to work for it either. We can usually manage to find the same servers in the in-game list. Weird. -
Non-Steam...Two Unique Characters...One PC ...How to?
azrael72 posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I apologize if this has already been addressed elsewhere. I have searched and searched the internet/various forums for information regarding installing a second unique account without using Steam. We've already tried on one computer to do a new Steam install with an existing Amazon purchase and it did not go well. I'm not completely computer illiterate, but messing with registry stuff kinda scares me. On my PC I've been running the non-steam version since early May and just recently began using DayZ Commander. I'd like to buy a second installation from Amazon to run on this PC. Has anyone had experience doing it this way? I'm thinking if I create all new folders in which to install the new games and download a new instance of DayZ within those folders I should be able to launch the new Arma2 OA/DayZ instances without getting the tangled up CD keys registry thing like we did with Steam. Then again my thinking may be completely wrong. Before I drop another $30 I wanted to check and see if anyone has had any success with this. Thanks for your time. -
This is not good news. It's my understanding that a .45 shot at center mass on human should be a one shot kill at a range of up to 50 feet. Even with standard acp ammo, ie no hollow point, no glaser, etc. As for the Z's, if they are intended to be infected humans, rather than dead folks with reanimated brains, they should be taken out with one .45 shot center mass as well. I suppose maybe it's been scaled back to try to create some kind of PVP balance or something? Make it more difficult to kill each other with the weapons that are easier to find and making it more of a challenge to kill Zs? I love my .45, both the one in game and in my nightstand, it's been an excellant backup for my beloved hatchet - both the one in game and in my nightstand :P .

I downloaded DayZ Commander today. There's a stickied thread on the subject, I just don't know how to do links. So far I really like it. You can filter day/night servers and the various server settings.

I've begun taking notice of steep slopes with bushy pines and kind of mentally noting them as good places to lose zombies that are chasing me. We also have a set of apartment buildings in town that are practically identical to the Cherno/Berezino apartments, down to the inset balconies for each apartment. My sister lived in them years ago and they make that same echoing sound when you walk up the steps and in the halls. It gives me a creepy sense of de ja vu when I go into them in game. Her carpets were much nicer though.

Mays and ErbseGG, Don't allow yourself to be subjugated to players like this. I don't PVP. I don't hold anything against those who do even though I don't really understand it. But I will never, never, ever allow myself to be subjected to some kind of fraternity type hazing stunt. That type of behavior is disgusting and uncalled for no matter where on the fence you sit regarding PVP. Take the bullet...after calmly and clearly telling them to... Go Fuck Themselves! You may have to start over, but at least you will do so with your integrity intact.

A serious question for the PvP-phobes
azrael72 replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So that in the nature of man, we find three principal causes of quarrel. First, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory. The first maketh men invade for gain; the second, for safety; and the third, for reputation. The first use violence, to make themselves masters of other men's persons, wives, children, and cattle; the second, to defend them; the third, for trifles, as a word, a smile, a different opinion, and any other sign of undervalue, either direct in their persons or by reflection in their kindred, their friends, their nation, their profession, or their name. To this war of every man against every man, this also is consequent; that nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice, have there no place. Where there is no common power, there is no law; where no law, no injustice. Force and fraud are in war the two cardinal virtues. -Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan, Ch XIII___________________________________________ I'd never thought I'd actually quote a 16th century political philosopher on a video game forum. But this is DayZ right? In this thread, and many others on the PVP subject, we have arguments based on the history of civilization, and the evolution of the human species. It's thought provoking stuff indeed. The above passages from Leviathan kind of sums up both why PVP occurs, whether we like or not, and also why in the current the current state of the mod, nothing can really be done about it, whether we like or not. Although, I don't engage in PVP myself - and by the way I'm surviving just fine in the wilds, so if I can do it anyone can - I must agree with Silence of the Lambs guy. There are threads on the forums attempting to create zones of friendly co-op, and I salute their creativity and ambition. There are also in Bandit HQ groups who will coordinate, spy, and all out war to take over the friendly zones. There are people who will kill just to kill - for the numbers, or for laughs. I don't like getting randomly killed anymore than anyone else does, but neither can I support artificial limits/consequences for that particular playstyle. Neither can I support artificial means to encourage the "carebear" style of gameplay. I'm afraid that adding those types of things as actual game mechanics might diminish DayZs unique, player developed environment. I don't have to like the environment, I just have to try to survive it as it evolves...and that's what makes it really fun, and scary, for me, at least. -
Consequences of player killing - a new direction!
azrael72 replied to heretic (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
@Heretic, I enjoy reading what you and other creative post authors suggest as ways to curb rampant player killing. It's not my favorite aspect of the game either, but some players just prefer that style of game play. Just like I prefer my "carebear" style of game play. Based on various posts and interviews it seems the developers might still consider your suggestion as consequences or punishment for choosing that particular style of play. Despite it's subtlety. It seems as though they are going for adding more co-op opportunities instead. Though I'm sure you've already watched or read Rocket's interviews and posts. I thoroughly enjoyed Amnesia, the Penumbra series, Silent Hill, etc;psychological type horror games along those lines. I would love the opportunity, just once in DayZ to get to spend 20 minutes or so haunting my murderer as a ghost. I'd love to be able to follow him around, whispering in his ear, materializing in front of his scope just a he gets a shot lined up. Maybe having some kind poltergeist abilities with empty cans or bottles, closing doors, footsteps on stairs and ladders. That would be crazy fun and funny. At the 'You Are Dead' screen you could have the option of either respawning or haunting your killer for a certain amount of time. It could be that your ghost is attached to that player like their gear for a half hour or so even if they DC and enter another server. I don't know if anyone has ever suggested such a thing before, (I hope I haven't inadvertently stolen someone else's idea) and I know it'll never, ever actually happen, but it'd be awesome nevertheless. I do like your ideas, Heretic, even though they'll probably never see the light of DayZ. :) (bad pun intended!) -
PvP kills: what % would you do for real?
azrael72 replied to Stukov's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It would work the opposite for me in real life. I've been playing for 2 months and have only had one bandit kill. I tend to avoid others, if I can't I try to communicate, if I die, I die. Folks are awfully jumpy in Chernarus. Sometimes I think just hearing a voice, no matter how calmly and slowly I try to speak frightens them so badly they just start shooting. I was raised, though, to protect my loved ones, myself, my property with lethal force if necessary. Don't misunderstand me to mean any such acts were to be taken lightly. In other words, we were taught to assess and respond appropriately not just be gun-toting nuts. We were brought up to be actively aware of our surroundings, people around us, and trust our instincts. (Vietnam veteran, ex-Army Dad.) In the event of an actual apocalypse I would probably be more apt to kill another human being having assessed them as a threat. In real life, apocalypse aside, if a person were to enter my home with ill intent, threaten my life or the lives of my family I would decisively respond with deadly force. The very opposite of how I play the game. Weird, huh? Hmmm, maybe not. The Bandit I killed was attacking and ultimately killed my husband as he entered a barn just before me. If he hadn't been there I have to wonder if I would have even bothered firing on the hatchet killer. Huh, I'm going to have to ponder this now. -
A serious question for the PvP-phobes
azrael72 replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Having any expectations of any kind, I think, is what tends to bite players in the ass, and sparks the ire. I started playing DayZ in early May. A week or so before I joined the forums, I think it was. My son sent me the link to the Kilroy videos and I knew I had to try it out. I've been a huge fan of the Zombie/post-apocalyptic genre for 30 years, in films and books. I'd only ever played one online game. Combat Arms. My husband and guys from work played and we'd chat, laugh and mow each other down with no apologies, that's what you were supposed to do. Upon entering the DayZ world I had preconceived notions as to how I would behave had I survived an apocalypse and made assumptions about how most others would behave as well. In DayZ I am a hardcore, balls to the wall, crazy, uber.....Carebear! :P Any assumptions I'd had coming into to this game regarding how other people would behave I've chucked right the hell out the frickin' window! I don't engage in PVP. I have a well developed sense of empathy for the people at the keyboards who play this brutal game and I treat them the way I would like to treated, even if it gets me killed. I don't particularly like getting killed, but there's no point in complaining about it either. I guess my personal notion of post-apocalypse survival is not just about my survival, but survival of the species. There are 626,166 unique players in DayZ. I see this number as the DayZ world population. The number of murders is 2,250,066. Human extinction has occured 3 times! Arguments based on realism are moot. I don't understand the rampant PVP in this game, particularly sniping just to kill. I don't understand NASCAR fans. PVPers may not understand my way of playing. NASCAR fans may not understand my love of college football. That's okay... it really is. We all come from different places, philosophically, gaming experience, life experience - all of which play a role in how different players approach gameplay in DayZ. What's fantastic about it is that there is room in this DayZ world to roll however it is you want to roll, with the added bonus of experiencing genuine, real-life, gut-wrenching emotions. I don't care for the "I died >:(" whining posts either, but I do enjoy reading the well thought out ideas of people both for and against PVP. Again it seems to me that an unwillingness to let go of preconceived notions about how everything and everybody should be, is what causes so much of the angst for so many cranky forum members. -
How to you get fun in this game? What goals do you have?
azrael72 replied to mkrrr's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I totally love, love, love my hatchet. I have not picked up a rifle or shotgun since it was introduced as a melee weapon. I carry a sidearm as well, but only rarely use it. Right now I have the 1911 which is nice since you can reload revolver ammo for it. I've never killed a player with, in fact in the 2 months I've been playing this I've only shot one player in self defense who was trying to Lizzie Borden my face with a hatchet, which was one of the most frightening, adrenaline pumping moments I've experienced in game. My husband and I play together and we are just running around the woods in the North checking out small towns, killing Zs, hunting for animals. On his last days off work we found 2 heli crashes in 2 days, and checked out the NW Airfields (which was rather anti-climactic, nothing too significant there other than really pissed off Zombies). I think now we've found a decent hiding spot and are going to start looking for some kind of vehicle to put back together. This game is, quite literally, what you make of it. That's what makes it so unique. -
This is good information. But.... I shall never surrender! DEATH FIRST!! (I will attempt to run away, though...then DEATH! :D)

Am I unlucky or do Admins just always hoard stuff?
azrael72 replied to coltonlong's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm curious. How do you know that the camps or hoarding spots you come across are admin? Is it because there are a lot of vehicles at these places? I've seen places with lots of tents and stuff and I've stumbled across places that have multiple vehicles. I usually hightail it right the hell out of there as fast as I can since I assume very nasty people are guarding those piles of stuff. I guess I just always figured it was highly industrious and organized bandit groups with twitchy trigger fingers who have that hoarding disorder. -
Empathy. It can be a harsh mistress in this game. It get's me killed regularly, but I'm okay with that. It's good to see that there are still players that haven't fully detached themselves emotionally.

I totally understand your frustration nrvswreck. When I spawn I always look for the little concrete shed-type out buildings. For instance if I spawn on the cherno coast I beeline for the cranes on the docks. Zs won't go on those docks (I keep to the coast side of the tracks). There are a couple of sheds along there that tend to spawn hatchets. I can generally sprint to them pick up the hatchet, if it's there, and get back across without getting hit, or at least, taking minimal damage. Between Otmel and Elektro there is a large grey metal warehouse ( the kind with the catwalk) and I've had pretty good luck finding a hatchet in the upper room, sometimes on the bottom floor. It may take some belly crawling to get in there, but at least it has 2 entrances you can use to slow/lose the chasers. Unfortunately some places just flat out suck to spawn in. For me, a Kamenka spawn usually means I die fast. Kamenka's like a curse on me or something! Sometimes when I keep dying minutes after spawning I just get so frustrated that I start making stupid moves and stop being careful. At this point I make myself take a break for a bit and go back in when I've calmed down. Once you've learned the map and useful building locations... well I won't say it gets easier, but you will have a better idea what you need to do once you find out where you've spawned. Good Luck!
