My solution? I don't have all the answers bud. Plus, I don't get paid to answer those questions either... and Steam isn't the only content delivery system in existence mind you. The developers working on this stand-alone have way more contacts in the industry than I could hope to ever have. However, GOG and StarDock are content delivery systems and they are not as restrictive as the aforementioned types. This is precisely why consumer rights in the United States don't exist... I'm just trying to advise people to open their eyes a bit, to not just agree to everything out there so blindly. Comments like McTwitchy's really are the focus point in why entertainment software consumers are in the pickle they're in and it is ALSO why companies like THQ are about to go bankrupt. You guys might not think that clicking a simple little "I agree" without caring what you're agreeing to matters... but it does.
-
#1 I'm probably older than you are. #2 The fact people LIKE Steam shows how much they read a EULA or SSA and care nothing about consumer rights. I like Valve, however I don't like how they treat their consumers and consumer rights. Their ToS and legal structure of the EULAs basically hold gamers hostage. Nowadays even if you purchase a physical game at a store, you're required to sometimes use Steam to access your game. If you stop agreeing to their hostage-taking-terms at some point... what then? You've purchased a hard copy of a game but you won't be able to play it. Hardly fair for the consumer. With Steam/Origin/uPlay it's about holding gamers and their PROPERTY hostage. Note, the LICENSE is their property. However, you can't use your license if you disagree with their terms. @WargameKlok: Would I like to play DayZ Stand-alone? Yes. Would I buy it? Absolutely! Would I buy it on Steam. No! I do not condone any company that essentially negates any consumer rights whatsoever, and that is precisely what Valve does with Steam, EA does with Origin and Ubishaft does with uPlay.

I don't know who is crying here, but it sure as heck isn't me. Don't presume to put words in my mouth or try to take some snotty attitude. If you'd have bothered to actually COMPREHEND what I wrote you would see that I gave alternatives. Some people simply do not just agree with Steam's Terms of Service or the Steam Subscriber Agreement. Steam is not the only content delivery system out there. Valve just can't be bothered to give two sh*ts about what consumers want. Developer's concern about pushing patches and what not... that shouldn't be their concern. A reliable download location, a decent cheat prevention system, a way to authenticate that someone actually bought the product. Bam... done. Patches can be released and provided by the content delivery host for manual patching by users. It is ok to put SOME responsibility on the end-user. Design a decent patching API and you wouldn't have a problem anyways. But, to put Minecraft and Steam in the same article... God, lets pray Notch never finds this thread... lol

I believe that some people's concern with Steam is the total and utter disregard of personal property by Valve. The issue I personally have with Steam/Origin/U-Play, is that their terms of service and "SUBSCRIBER Agreement" are so entirely one sided that you don't even own a LICENSE of the game. If a Steam user decided that the ToS or SSA are so unfair and chooses not to sign the new terms (which they're able to push upon users due to the "we can do whatever the F*** we want" clause) then that user cannot access his/her games anymore. For some people this means over $3,000 in software licenses that become inaccessible. This is where I'm confused about the development team's apparent reverence in Minecraft's ways, yet resorting to Steam instead of Good Old Games or StarDock, when Notch himself pretty much regards Steam as the devil incarnate. And I highly agree with him. Services and ToS/SSA's like Steam/Origin/uPlay are entirely unconscionable and using their platform only shows that you support their paradigm which is "screw the consumer." At least that's my opinion.

Hmmmm... In some ways I'm glad that this is all being implemented this way, HOWEVER, I can't help to have fears that ballistics and weapon handling as Operation Flashpoint, ArmA and ArmA2 handled them have gone the way of the Dodo... I'm expecting something rather lame like BF3 (fake)ballistics. can someone official please confirm or deny this? I personally am rather fond of having the weapons behave exactly like they did in the aforementioned games. Much more realistic. On a side note: Your comments and postings are highly appreciated as it is rare to see developers connected to their community. So, a heartfelt thank you.

Problem is if you didn't reinstall the game (even over existing folders that have your old data) then there are no registry keys that tell Windows that the game is even installed. This isn't Windows 95 or 98 anymore where you could copy programs back and forth. Any games/programs that are installed nowadays create registry entries. That doesn't mean there aren't programs that you can't still do that to, but those are few and far between. Also, I'm going to preface this, as it looks like you may not have a very deep knowledge of the Windows Operating System... DO NOT COPY YOUR OLD COMPUTER'S REGISTRY ONTO THE NEW ONE... very very very bad idea. If you know what registry keys apply to a certain program, then yes, you can export specific registry keys from the old one and import them on the new setup, however, you might as well just reinstall the game(s) from scratch.

Actually I would highly recommend that players keep at least ONE bloodbag in their alice pack. If you are injured during your solo play and you cry out for some help. There could be someone near you that doesn't have a bloodbag or doesn't carry them, then at least they can go into your pack and get it out and assist you. :) I always carry 1 blood bag, 1-2 morphine and 2 - 3 bandages.

Quick Tips playlist for New players
sniperdoc replied to MickGinger0's topic in New Player Discussion
Nice job. May want to add a caveat to the flashlight video stating that your method will only work if the pistol slot is open. Next you may want to do a video about the Inventory and how to best move equipment around from backpack to active or toolbelt to inventory and vice versa. Thanks for the vids. The shortness of the videos is mint. -
DayZ Newb/Bambi Guide/Help *Updated*
sniperdoc replied to The Bean Marine's topic in New Player Discussion
Great guide. However, spelling errors abound and punctuation/grammar is non-existent and can make it a bit hard to read. :( Also, spawning in the area "with hills and no trees or bushes"... this is Debug Land. Usually caused by logging off in an area that had a conflict with your spawn point after logging back in, i.e. if you went prone under a pine tree and logged off. From what I've read (after spawning there myself and trying the trick Peter recommended and respawning with no gear of any kind), Debug Land is to the West/Northwest of the actual Chernarus area. If you find your bearing using the clouds, which move west to east, or using the stars, head Southeast and you should eventually hit an area that has trees... keep moving and it should get you back to roads/towns or at least get you to the shore which is most likely the southern shore. That will prevent you from losing your gear... unless you had none, in which case it's easier just to respawn/die and start over. If in Debug Land, logging out and logging back in may cause you respawn in the south on Otmel island without any gear at all. You maintain the clothes you wore on your back, and the health, drink and food status you had before you logged off. -
Because when you do find that person or team you can trust it's SOOOO worth it. ;)

I guess it depends on the situation. If someone asks for a blood transfusion and you hold that someone at gunpoint while you're trying to get to them in a safe fashion because you want to give them the transfusion isn't an act of aggression. I tell people to equip a flashlight and to face a wall a bush or something while I have my rifle aimed at their head as I advance.... I don't consider that an act of aggression. That's some kindness going on... because there's more factors than just that person asking for a transfusion. Hell it could be a group of bandits playing 'possum, right? There's a bridge in San Francisco I canna sell you... it'sa very niiice. I agree. I appreciate players that make an attempt to actually kind-of role-play this mod. Indiscriminate killing doesn't do anything other than to grow your own e-peen and just makes you an a-hole. On the other hand, as a friendly player, I can respect when someone camps out a super market for example, and waits for a person to come out with the goodies you were too lazy to get yourself. Bravo... pretty much makes sense doesn't it? Let someone else risk their life as they get the things you need... That... is a bandit. Someone just capping a new player running around with a flashlight and no rifle or killing people in spawn areas... that's just an a-hole thing to do and ruins other player's experience with the game and probably will make them dislike the game and not come back to it. This probably kills the amount of players on that server, thereby reducing the a-hole's amount of easy targets to a very small amount and which makes THAT a-hole bored, since there's nothing to shoot, and then he leaves the server as well to move on to other greener pastures. In this case, I think it serves to have active admins on servers to reduce the "grief" to a minimal amount, which keeps activity high on servers and ultimately increases the amount of fun people have.

After I try that, do I have to roll it back somehow to play on a 1.7.3 server?

I don't know why they segregated the items you can put into tents into different groups anyways. That just seems to add more complexity that's not necessary. 70 items in a tent, done. Same like a pack. That way you can look at your 0/70 or 14/70 or n/70 and just do some quick math instead of trying to figure out what constitutes a tool vs an item and then what weapons you have and see if the tools and weapons add up to 10.
-
Yeah, that's what I thought initially too. Already lost massive amounts of weapons due to this bug. I check around the tent are area and nothing there. I check where I was standing when I put a weapon in too full a pack... gone. :( Additionally, I don't know why they segregated the items you can put into tents into different groups anyways. Thank you so much for this information. Considering that whatever they've coded has no error checking and really doesn't seem to be a priority to fix, probably means the standalone version will get the same exact treatment. I'm getting sick and tired of: 1. Not having something CRUCIAL like this be easy to find. 2. Having items/weapons/etc disappearing on me. It's getting to be a pain to find stuff over and over and over again. Especially with the crap vehicle spawn rate so you have to hoof it EVERYWHERE. I mean... color code the stuff if you can't error check it and say: "Nope! You already have too many weapons in your tent!" Give us something that makes it easier to ID what is what or let us categorize stuff so we don't have to sit there with pen and paper and note what will take us "over the top." Really... Fishguts, thanks again for posting this info. Should be stickied if it isn't. :(

I'm at a loss here... I've joined a server that JUST got restarted and I hit like 15 different sites that should have vehicles, i.e. UAZ, GAZ, Old Bikes, and Motorcycles, yet all the sites had nothing there...? What gives? Spots that should have a couple of bikes and even motorcycles didn't have anything there. Am I not understanding the rate of spawns? I know that certain vehicles spawn faster than others, i.e. bikes every 4 hours vs GAZ which I think is every 12? But, it's a newly started server... shouldn't everything be there? Can someone explain the vehicle spawning process to me?
-
Wow... sucks when you have someone that says "Hey... I moved all the Old bikes into more easy to find locations for everyone." Methinks that person was full of crap... :P Pretty much means that person screwed everyone else and everyone has to hoof it now... :( That's pretty shitty. I think that system needs to change. I read something about 7 days of vehicle inactivity causing the vehicle to respawn. Boy, that's the pits... :( Thanks for answering the question.
-
Unfortunately I've started adopting a shoot first ask questions later. IF you're tired of losing gear that is. If you're fine spending HOURS finding another compass and matches and running 3/4 of the way across the map scrounging for food, then that's your deal. Shoot first, ask questions later.
-
I get that, but nowhere does it tell you that, and also... why would it just go *poof*? That's really the issue at hand. Disappearing vehicles, disappearing tents, weapons, gear in general, etc... these are items that should be resolved before there's work done on something like "dogs." And again, just reiterating, if they can't get a simple check or "save item" working properly it makes me question how they can hope to even charge for the alpha stand-alone version. :(
-
I'm really enjoying this game and thank everyone involved in the making of this mod... however: I think some of these bugs are really simple fixes and just aren't being addressed. Just yesterday evening I put a DRM into an Alice Pack with only 6 slots and it totally disappeared. I mean come on... how about a simple (pack is full) or just don't let it be moveable. A simple, If available slots = 8 then move, if not don't f-ing move it. Considering that just maintaining a mod seems to be an issue, I can't say I'd be willing to BUY an Alpha product. I mean... dogs people? You put in dogs when the rest of the mod doesn't even work right?

Well... that was fun. Last night I parked an ATV with some stuff in it and a unpacked a tent nearby in the same area. Far away from civilization. Then I logged off, near some trees, not in them, but near them. Logged in at lunch an hour ago and showed up immediately as having died after logging into the server. It showed my hands in front of me, like I'm laying on the ground, with a guy in a Ghillie right next to me and the world was entirely bare and devoid of structures or trees. No one else showed as being on the server but me? So, I tasked out, closed the window (i.e. stopped the game process) then logged back into the server and it showed me at Otmel, IN THE WATER, devoid of items/weapons or a backpack. During the login portion where you choose your team slot, it did say in the info UI on the bottom left: "I love you" or "I love you all" I don't recall... that was kind of odd...? The only thing I kept was my clothing, hunger, thirst and poor health the way I was before I logged off last night. I didn't have a backpack or any of the items including the watch, compass, map, hatchet, etc. Essentially I had to bust ass all the way to Elektro and restock, which that was bare to begin with? The server was hacked perhaps?

Logged off fine last night, logged in at lunch today - respawned without items in diff location, showed as having died
sniperdoc replied to sniperdoc's topic in New Player Discussion
Holy hell this game/mod has a learning curve that rivals Eve Online's. So, basically I should have just walked South East and I wouldn't have lost all my stuff... great. Awesome. Love it. *sigh* Getting so tired of constantly starting over... at least spawn more regular bikes... gaaaaaah!!!! http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/w0g59/you_can_escape_the_debug_plains_without_losing/ -
I had this happen today: http://dayzmod.com/f...as-having-died/ Basically logged off fine this morning at 2:45am EDT, then logged in at 12:30pm today and showed up as having died. Respawned all the way across the map at Otmel without any items, except I kept my military clothing, my poor health, and food and drink status. More detail in the thread. Getting really tired of losing items due to vehicles not saving, and tents having similar issues. The server is also not very busy, generally maybe 7 - 9 people. Last night it was me, myself and I.

I parked an ATV and tent with a bunch of stuff last night. Will see in 15mins (when I get home) whether the stuff is still there. *crosses fingers* Update: Well... that was fun. Logged in. Showed up immediately as having died after logging into the server. It showed my hands in front of me with a guy in a Ghillie right next to me. I tasked out, closed the window (i.e. stopped the game process) then logged back into the server and it showed me at Otme?!?!?!!, IN THE WATER with squat for items/weapons. The only thing I kept was my clothing, hunger, thirst and poor health the way I was before I logged off last night. I didn't have a backpack or any of the items including the watch, compass, map, hatchet, etc. Essentially I had to bust ass all the way to Elektro and restock, which that was bare to begin with. Demystification of the DayZ loot spawn system [SPOILER]
sniperdoc replied to insitv's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I take it that the timer runs regardless of how far away you are, i.e. as long as it's >30m. Let's say I completely looted a building. I then proceed to other places >120m away and take my time doing so. Then whenever I get back, as long as it's been over 10mins, and assuming no one else has been <30 of that same building, then the loot should be there.
