  1. There should be a server option to disable the grass for all clients (setTerrainGrid 50), since in MP grass has only a "local" fluff effect and a low radius. When you hide in high grass, the only thing you do is reducing your own view while other players can see you, because that grass around you is not displayed on their clients.

    Server default/option: disable grass?

The point is that the grass consumes quite an amount of ressources. So forcing every client in MP to display grass isn't that good. It's not that dramatical in Takistan, but Chernarus is quite demanding. Forcing grass in a greater radius is even worse. Personally I prefer very high detail setting for textures, antialiasing and such instead of grass. In my MP maps I always include the server-side option of four grass detail levels (max to disabled). And since it's actually useless, one can spend C/GPU power for other details without having to waste power to grass. Shadows are also client-side optional and having them disabled can give you an (PvP) advantage over players who have shadows displayed (but that's more the "fault" of those people who activate shadows). So since the grass is more or less useless in the non-limited and fully-used ranges of Chernarus and since the grass only serves as eye-candy for those who don't want to run across polygon-plains, grass really might be client-side optional. But I suppose this to be a future-patch-matter of the Arma core game. Don't know whether Dayz -although being a total conversion- is potentially able to add that options to the main/graphics menu. CERTAINLY (since I'm scripting and editing) I know for sure, that it can be added by an ingame menu. Further, the fifty metres of grass radius on lowest detail (yet visible) consume 12+ FPS in comparison to totally disabled grass. So imagine 500+ metres radius, lol. Personally I do not dislike totally disabled grass. Don't know how to express... has something of a clean and tidy environment.
  3. With 400.000 players there are probably 400.001 imaginations of what the game should be like. The devs should just make their own alpha, then beta, then gold. Until then this breeding ground of stupidity should be closed or removed from this forum.
  4. What about having all type-chat and voice-chat except 'direct' being disabled by default? Friends/clans who join to play together, use TeamSpeak anyway. And there wouldn't be 'unrealistic' zone-wide chat, to speak in MMO terms. Being able to communicate (by typing and by voice) in a realistic range contributes to the way "dayz is meant to be played" (you know: unforgiving, harsh world, survivor, real world and all that) I also think 99% of all players are not interested in those log-in-log-out messages every 5 seconds. The irritating bad-connection symbol might also be disabled, which every client receives when anybody unknown 'out there' has a bad connection. You can check your own ping any time in the map screen. Don't know if these issues are a matter of the core game or if it can be handled by Dayz...

Disable all chat but 'direct' by default?

The problem with the current chat system is, that is very inconvenient and looks like a pre-alpha placeholder. All you see in a few seconds rhythm is: x logged in, x logged out, x died. At least BIS implemented the command disableChannels[] = {}; to get rid of those non-understandable system messages that just spams away player chat. Anyway the Arma ingame chat isn't usable by new players for learning and asking like in a real MMO. 1.) in Dayz hardly anybody answers 2.) system messages spam the few lines of chat almost instantly away. 3.) questions of newbies also immediately sink between other players' chat (which is only useless immersion breaking blah blah) that is going on already. Further, when there are other chat channels beside the direct channel, you can't escape from other players' (who haven't heard of push-to-talk) sneezing and smoke-lungs breathing without having to disable VON completely.

Fun with direct communication voice chat

Surely a refreshing idea. You're striding throught the forest in the night... the world torn apart... zombiemonsters around everywhere... also bandits and cod-kiddies who try to kill you... suddenly you see and hear a party ^^

    Ghillie Suit DayZ vs. CoD

Really, when you compare the two pics of the OP, you clearly see how unrealistic the Arma II camo suit is. Grey shoes instead of black. And the hands are not covered. Since you've discovered the ghillie only in Dayz, you are abviously missing 99% that the whole game has to offer. You just need to start the game without -@dayz and see the amazing universe the game offers, just by playing around with the editor.

    Completely revamp Ballistics

BIS' main focus should really be on Arma III.

Disable all chat but 'direct' by default?

Since Dayz is a total conversion, they might be able to implement some code to force the Arma engine 'underneath' just to allow the chat and other information that the dayzdevs want...

Character death should carry more weight

This is still a game. You don't turn on your PC just to wait 20 minutes in front of a black screen or 'having to' to do other things meanwhile. Hard and death-full, ok, but being forced to wait in front of a black screen and being excluded from gameplay.
  11. I use Arma X DVD version To launch the game, I have four taskbar shortcuts (this is not the exact script, it's just the method): * Arma (vanilla) * Arma -beta * Arma -beta -DayZ * Arma -DayZ When I want to play DayZ, I launch with -beta -DayZ. I don't use any other mods. I install/update DayZ manually by downloading the files and copying them into the DayZ mod folder. At the time of posting I'm using beta 94700 and DayZ version July 9th. Since having installed the July 9th version of DayZ, I can't run any other maps; neither SP or MP, even not from the editor preview. It seems like DayZ is "hacking" into the general structure of the game. Every non-DayZ-map seems to be controlled by DayZ: no map, the camera just floats fixed in the air and I can't do anything but leaving the map. Is it intention? When you start the game with -DayZ, you can play DayZ ONLY?

REVERT FORUMS BACK TO OLD LAYOUT

The old layout was very inconvenient and shitty to read. This one is much better.
  13. roguetrooper

    Playing Armory.

Since 1.7.2. NOTHING else except DayZ works anymore when you start the game in DayZ mode. Prior to that you were able to play DayZ, SP, MP, armory and editor preview. I suppose they did it so that no DayZ stuff can be used outside of DayZ anymore. What a bullshit! Wasted time in making own maps where you can use DayZ weapons. :-/

    Microphone turns on at death

What a stupid suggestion. The mike should rather be disabled, since dead persons can't speak. But that's bullshit as well. Anyway, I for myself use push to talk in all games.

TOTAL WIPE - Yes or No ONLY

The gold-status game must start totally from scratch... as every other online game (e.g. MMO) does after beta. YES: MMO. Dayz is SOME KIND of mmo. You hunt for equipment, fight against NPCs and with/against other players and your character is stored outside of your PC... So Dayz IS some kind of mmo (even though much less mmo'ier than a real mmo).
  16. roguetrooper

    Are people dumb?

Since there is no thread dedicated to "The Forum", I'll do it here. Why are there, at least today, three pages in one block full of "stuck at loading screen"? I suppose, people don't read anything at all, when they are in a panic or rage, they just open their topic hasted and blindfolded instead of looking around first (like "you must paint much faster so that you are ready when there is no more paint left"). I imagine, the first answer to the first question of that kind already stated something to contribute solving the problem.

    1.7.2. screwed my Arma 2

I suppose this new "feature" to have been implemented in 1.7.2 to prevent that anybody can use any DayZ stuff outside of an 'official' DayZ multiplayer environment :-( I have made some non-DayZ-maps where you can use the DayZ weapons... a waste of time if that new "feature" should have been implemented on purpose :-(

Can't play other maps while DayZ is installed

I suppose this new "feature" to have been implemented in 1.7.2 to prevent that anybody can use any DayZ stuff outside of an 'official' DayZ multiplayer environment :-( All I've borrowed from DayZ was scripting "unit addmagazine "15Rnd_W1866_Slug" and "unit addweapon "Winchester1866", not even an editor placed object/unit/sound :-(

Can't play other maps while DayZ is installed

As stated less detailed above, I always launch (any version) by a taskbar shortcut. I have these shortcuts: (1) Arma vanilla:C:\Arma2\arma2oa.exe -nosplash -cpuCount=4 -world=empty -noLand -showScriptErrors (2) Arma vanilla beta:C:\Arma2\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -nosplash -cpuCount=4 -world=empty -noLand -showScriptErrors (3) Arma DayZ beta:C:\Arma2\Expansion\beta\arma2oa.exe -beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion -mod=@dayz -nosplash -cpuCount=4 -world=empty -noLand -showScriptErrors (4) Arma DayZ:C:\Arma2\arma2OA.exe -cpuCount=4 -nosplash -world=empty -noLand -showScriptErrors -mod=@dayz Since I've installed Arma, I have been using mostly (3). Having started Arma this way, I've been able to do everything: joining a DayZ server, play own maps, host OTHER MP maps, play from the editor preview.Up to yesterday, when I installed DayZ version July 9th.Edit: When I don't play DayZ, I usually launch the game without the -dayZ shortcut. Launching without DayZ everything works fine. But since I was able to any NON-DayZ stuff although DayZ is installed and enabled, I created my own map that includes the DayZ Winchester, which I can't play anymore now SUDDENLY, since the behaviour of DayZ seems to have changed in version July 9th in comparison to previous DayZ versions. I was so happy having made my own nice non-zombie map where players can use the DayZ Winchester (using only that gun from all the dayz stuff, nothing else from dayz). Now SUDDENLY everything is fucked up (concerning this dayz-dominance-issue)

Can't play other maps while DayZ is installed

Huh? I've been playing other maps without any problems ever since I've installed DayZ the first time (some months ago) and started the game with the -dayZ mod shortcut. Up to yesterday I have always been able to to whatever I wanted although I started the game in DayZ mode: play online DayZ, load any other map in SP, MP and the editor. I have created another MP map, featuring the DayZ Winchester (implementing NOTHING else into my own map but the Winchester). Since yesterday I can't play it any more. I've played this and other non-DayZ-maps without any problems even though the DayZ mod is installed and running. That is really annoying bullshit.

Why is everyone I meet an ***hole?

Of course nobody will read page 13. When there were servers with PvP killing DISabled, they would be more frequented than the current servers. I've been playing EverQuest II from 2005 to 2011 in a hardcore raiding guild on a PvE(nvironment) server. There is a good reason why many people prefer them in opposition to PvP... you can enjoy the game without being bothered by idiots who just jerk off by annyoing other people. The current servers simply are PvP servers, that's all.

    No sound

Since a few days I have no sound effects. I'm operating with the Six Updater, have patch 1.60, the latest beta patch and the latest Dayz patch (I hope so - trusting Six). Single player mode works without any problems, in the menu there are clicking-effects and music. Only online in Dayz I have no sound effects (walking, shooting and all this) for a few days now...
  23. roguetrooper

    No sound

I've also downloaded and installed the DayZ files manually. Still no sound and the character is not saved when I leave the game. I always restart at a certain point with certain equipment. Don't know what to do... :(

Whats wrong with this world, seriously

That is how humans are. Societey and all that mass-events the human brain is not designed for (rather for living with 15 well known other humanoids in a cave) are just pressed together by outer forces: law, restrictions, penalty and the permission to participate in a health- and life saving environment. Remove all that and add anonymity, humanoids will turn into selfish, anti-social brainshit. Three million years of surviving in a harsh environment is much stronger than that very thin layer of 5000 years of 'civilisation'.
