ugh, I run a public hive and have essentially given up my right to play in order to keep hackers in check. I basically just sit and watch the logs looking for any suspicious activity, or watch BERcon for mass log outs... Oh and FYI you can PW protect it w/o getting much guff from anywhere, I haven't ever but one of the guys I gave admin rights when I went away over the holidays PW locked out server for essentially the whole time I was gone because someone was hacking... I wasn't happy about it and unlocked it as soon as I heard, but it was PW protected for over 5 days and I nor gameservers.com ever got any notice from DayZ and PW lock is against the hosting rules.. While this is not a cheap manor of policing, and frankly it sickens me that admins have to put themselves at risk like this, but you can always find out WHAT map tools and hacks the baddies are using and run some counter ops on your server... IMO the only solution to this problem is to allow active admins to hack on their own public servers... and ONLY THEIR OWN PUBLIC SERVERS... it SHOULD be pretty easy for them to modify existing hacks so they're tagged and then distribute them to admins on public servers with their instance ID tied to the program, so they can't distribute it... and if they use it on another server it will be detected... now THAT would be the proper solution IMO... You get to keep the open public servers, but you give the admins the tools to deal with hackers, detect them early, and rectify any destruction they've caused... But I think expecting any answers or action out of them at this point is hopeful and kind of pretentious... I've learned to deal with adminning an open server, it sucks and means I can barely play the game anymore, but at least I can keep the people on my server SEMI safe and assist them if there is a major attack where they wrongfully lose their kit. Other than teleporting though (running 9k is not fun ever) I don't really get the point of hacking, it spoils ALL the fun of the game, who wants to know where people are? That is literally what makes the game fun, being CONSTANTLY paranoid that here is someone around the corner watching waiting to shoot you or friend up who knows... And the risks of rebuilding vehicles, hunting for loot etc... It's no fun when you can insta heal, or repair cars, or spawn items... all that stuff is there pretty much and if it's not you're getting logged in the pubvariable log anyway so what's the point?? just some rambling opinions -

CBL is being updated regularly... http://code.google.com/p/dayz-community-banlist/issues/detail?id=3516&sort=-id&start=100 Above is a ban request submitted on the 2nd and added to the list They've got a lot of submissions to deal with and they do proper reviews, If you look at issues you'll see there are several overturned outdated bans, so there have been some removals as well as additions.... And unlike BE they actually admit fault in the script detection of BE and unban players (prob more liberally than I would... if they don't have the evidence they will overturn the ban as far as I can tell)... Although finding the latest updated banlist is a PITA! I've submitted an issue requesting the update their front page so it doesn't seem like it's not being updated and put a link directly there for the latest ban list.... hopefully that gets done and puts an end to all the confusion... I thought it wasn't being updated until someone posted a link directly to the latest version which I now for the life of me can't find and am too tired to keep trying lol...

Yep I copy and paste your list into mine every day or two, also use community ban list, and whatever flagrant reports I see that haven't been added yet lol... I'm pretty aggressive with the ban hammer, yet they keep flooding in... Here are a couple dudes who thought spawning lots of sathel charges within minutes of joining the server was a good idea, went over to where abouts they were and found an SUV 5 Tractors and 4 bikes... ugh. They had a buddy who didn't hit the logs, but he logged out right after I banned them, then logged back in to hide his body as I was approaching the area, heard the fly's buzzing but no body to be found, Checked the console log and nailed down who logged in and out at the times I banned the two guys and as I was reaching the area... Matters to people who play on your server and have tents and vehicles lol... The only reason I admin a server is PA1 got shut down despite my buddies begging them to keep it up. I don't even have a computer that will run the SA (I don't think at least) so I'm not overly interested in it, and for reasons stated above on both sides... 1. As far as players leaving the mod for the pvp fps of the SA... I'm not sure that is the case for the SA, but if it is THANK FUCKING GOD!!!!!! Mod will become the most amazing game ever if all the dumb noobs who just want to run and gun aren't there... I HATE most simulation games this game is AWESOME, if the SA turn in anyway what so ever away from the realism of the mod then I will 100pct not be on board for personal play at least. 2. I have WAYYYY too much invested, I've got 2 keys for OA2 BAF,PMC, 2 servers, lol 3. Diversity of maps and private/public.... at my prime of playing prior to making admin duties take up most of my time, I had 20-30 active characters on different maps and servers... knew where they all where what they had etc etc... with the key switching I had multiple characters on the same private hive so if one got killed I could help him along with the other character... it was pure magic lol. I have friends who STILL talk about Operation Flashpoint... so chances are my crew will be playing the mod for quite some time lol. Keep the replies coming... -
Vanilla or Modded?

I like no one else setting up any more servers lol... there are soooo many at this point. Any experience you want is already hosted by someone else and there is an existing population playing on that server... I think if people spent half as much time finding good servers with good hosts/admins as they did figuring out stuff about hosting their own server we'd have a MUCH more active and vibrant community. To answer your question directly, I like BOTH... when the public hive life become too stressful or I'm overly emotionally invested I play on private hives, depending on my mood I will play a survival one or two or PvP 10million cars one... they are both fun in their own ways and neither one is "the right way"... Between the varience in maps, hosts, servers, public/private, starting kit, vehicle persistance etc etc etc you can get any experience out of this mod you want... I have characters in different stages of development on like 20 different servers/maps... THAT is the true value in a private hive IMO... the ability to have multiple "lives" in multiple maps or the same map.... the removal of the ghosting ability is a big plus on private hives too... but other than that if you're going to go vanilla I say go public. What's the point of slightly modding what is already a fantastic game on it's own... and you DRASTICALLY increase your audience when it's a public hive... I've swapped maps on my 2nd server 2-3 times this month to see what gets played more... the long and short of it as far as I can tell is that frankly there are too many private hives right now and no matter how good your server is it's likely not going to get a lot of players or a solid base community for AT LEAST 2-3 months... at which point stand alone will be out... are you going to keep paying to host a mod server at that point??? -

Welcome to the fray! I mean at the point of running a 90pct vanilla server why not just be public hive? There are less and less of those around and will more than likely increase your chances of high pop... Also IMO setting up a server for your squad to PvP others is kind of asshatty... I mean you guys own the server and have control over what spawns where or whether people can even get into the server. You can basically build up an endless supply of restocking bases and just lose lots and reup... kinda weak... Most of the servers I've seen that have a big squad running them that do nothing but PvP all the people coming on get VERY empty VERY fast. FYI you have not set up statistics on Gametracker.com or claimed the server. -
I BELIEVE that entry means they were flying it and firing the flares not seeing them from the ground.... could be wrong though. I've only gotten those on my server when the person in the Mi17 fires the flares I believe you have to be pilot to do that.

standalone will be released in alpha for a reduced price, the full release shouldn't cost more than 30 bucks so 10-20 for the alpha??? That's my guess, at this point it's questionable that it's going to get let out of bohemia considering the steady stream of income still coming from the mod... but that might be a pessimistic view. I don't really care either way, mod is awesome, extra maps are awesome, private vs public is awesome, I love this game, I couldn't care less about standalone... my computer will prob. choke on the standalone.

If you just shut down the server and wait 10-30 seconds and reboot it it might go away, try that before going crazy.

uninstall and resinstall .net. O/wise you have to track down the dowload files for each of the maps and follow the instructions on their pages... all the pages are linked in the maps thread: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/109569-index-of-dayz-community-mapsmods/ All those maps should link to the development thread or webpage and there should be install instructions for all of them there... Just fix your .net though. lol

It's so funny to me how everytime someone gets killed it's definately a hacker but if an admin or server has a problem it's just poor adminning there is NO way that hackers are more powerful than the server operators right??? video uploaded of play on a Celle server where 2 hackers went RAMPANT... I antagonized them to get good footage it worked.. It seems like run of the mill oh you got killed and are complaining stuff... then it gets pretty clear, THEN admins get selectively banned... this was a FULL server, ONLY the people who identified them as admins with the ability to ban got banned... everyone else was fine including the hackers. There is some discussion among our group about the hacks, one of the guys on TS has done "research" so he KNOWS what hacks are available or not and what they can or can not do. You CAN rcon ban the admins if they have FTP access it's not hard to fix or stop but if you don't you have to know your way around your Rcon tool to unban yourself. Here's the link it's long. 4:50 is where the discussion about the hacks starts. It happened just prior to our discussing it w/o us noticing it, as the discussion takes place we realize it's already happened. The hacker spawns non-local attack helicopters, which is kind of a big deal from what little I understand. Most hackers can only spawn stuff that workd FOR THEM, these guys were dropping attack helicopters that I was able to get into and fly (8:40)... I had just shot him in the head while he was out of game spawning the items he wanted, but he had god mode on so I ran off... as I came out of my menu and looked behind me to see if he was going to shoot me an attack helicopter spawns in behind me (I run 2 servers and I can't live spawn vehicles they require a restart)... I turn around and jump in. He doesn't even bother he just spawns another. It's a LONG video (15 min) but the end is the good bit. I keep updating the admins friend about where they are and bagging on them so they start attacking me directly it's pretty F'ing funny... I end up tethered to a tractor flying through the air like a kite... -

I said Hack. You are the one going on about scripts etc. I said hack, I was on a server it happened on the other night and it was dayz.st hosted not vilayer... so whatever you're thinking is wrong. Hacker banned both admins (how he identified them or banned them I have no idea nor would I discuss details if I did) they got stuck out and he even was a dick enough to put the username attached to their GUID as "NOOB ADMIN" lol. -

I don't know any details but there is a hack that allows a hacker to ban the admin. I have no clue how it works but I saw it happen the other night. it's terrible, if you are using an rcon tool try to remove your GUID from the ban list, or if you have FTP access same deal. Could be something else but I've seen that happen. Good luck. -
Why don't you just use "play with six"? it's MUCH better and has all the dayz maps and LOTS of Arma missions too... try it it's great and super simple to use.

DayZ Server Oversupply?

How long has it been up? Is it named? Do you promote it? Is it linked in your signature on these forums and others? Do you have a FB, Youtube, Twitter, G+, etc etc etc for it???? I've been the admin of a group of friends server for a couple months now and we've gone from like 1000th to 525th in the past month or two.... You have to have it up and running for a good amount of time before you'll get constant consistent traffic, even then you're going to have empty hours... I started a second Taviana Private hive and it hasn't gotten anywhere near the traffic the Public Chernarus Server does but it will with time. You can't expect to buy a server and have a population of 20-30 people on it all the time after a week or two... hell you can't really expect that even after a month or two unless you've got some kind of celeb status or something. -
Had some strange stuff happen last night exiting that giant church, broke my leg walking out. no bleeding or death but broken legs alright... Other than that though I've really only noticed minor glitches at most, played a decent amount on our server... REALLY like the map and the mechanics added in .eu. landing a helicopter is now for pros only basically, once you're in an area the zombies come flocking to it, and if you land on them they will damage you as you land... although the rotor blades do keep them at bay if you land with them far enough away... LOVE the damage taken in vehicles from zombies but find it a litttle weird that 90kp/h isn't enough to knock one down anymore. I'd imagine that's something they'll work on. The other thing I find both HILARIOUS for right now and a good sign they plan timely updates is the Santa zombies... really awesome... Haven't seen a tombstone yet have to check that out but they've been described to me and sound cool.

I've moved our server up in the ranks steadily although I'm not sure how much of it is luck or not. Firstly we run a pure vanilla public cherno server, at this point that's becoming a rarity. Second we don't change anything ever and never EVER do restarts unless they're absolutely needed. Third we play TONS and make sure no strange things are a foot... We have kept hackers at bay to a certain degree by just being on so often that we usually witness the attacks, and if not someone has an rcon window open and can see mass log offs which is usually a sign. We check in often with custom messages letting users know that Admins are on and watching, we review the logs twice daily and add to the ban list AGGRESSIVELY, at this point in the release if you don't know what guns are illegal tough shit, drop it and send and email. We also put our email and FB page up on the scoll message which shows that we are contactable if people want to although we've had VERY few reach outs. Address ban appeals seriously, but don't unban people who don't deserve it, make sure ANYONE getting unbanned is well aware that you will be eyes on them for weeks to come. I tweet and FB about the server a lot but have no idea if that does anything or not... I've added gametracker statistic tracking to both our servers and banners for one or both of them on every forum I go to.... The more exposure the better... but really it's word of mouth and steady population... Our server generally has 5-10 players on it, but once it gets to busy times that number can jump up to 15-20 or like a couple times over this last holiday week or two it was actually completely full... which of course then led to a massive hack attack... The other MAJOR problem I can see to servers is dumb players, people (including some in my own clan) think that if they get hacked on a server: "that's it I'm screwed forget that server forever" or "That's a hacker server for sure" or "Admins aren't doing shit to stop this" Truth is unless you hack as an admin hackers are WAY more powerful than you ever will be. BE and DayZ have left admins in a very weird place, players are trusted more than admins so admin abuse is less likely than hacker attacks... kinda dumb IMO but whatever. This Game RULES! -
Can you clarify which versions you ran? I haven't had any of the glitches you've mentioned and me and my friends have played our .eu server for hours, driven, flown, boated, ran, looted etc etc etc... no such problems on ours. Who's your host and what was the entire setup? Bliss? Public? Private? I've only clear bugginess I've come across are a few buildings that mess your character up as far as walking but I've never had any broken bones entering or exiting. That and the vehicle spawns do not work as they should although it's hard to tell when there is no official approved vehicle list, other than that everything seemed to work ok... haven't been all over though map is HUGE. I'd love to see eitherside work up some clear documentation.. I'd be more than willing to contribute to the effort. I may run the .com version

Sorry for the double post but I just watched the "helpful" admin video exposing the dirty truth... love how mid way through the video he hands his buddy a DMR and a ghillie suit then ends it with his buddy and him shooting a player that walked up to them and wasn't firing... and then shoots said player in the head instead of fixing him (which he could have by dumping back into the lobby and equipping a bandage and bloodbag to his own loadout).
