Has anyone seen Rockets Twitter, he is posting daily updates on progress, small snippets of info, pretty much exactly what we asked for, well even more to be honest, could have been a biweekly thing! Any chance we could get a daily updated thread with his twitter posts for all us cavemen who dont use it/stay away from it like the plague?

Although i do agree with you in principle, i think the backlash is somewhat brought on by Rocket himself. Part of me wants to slap every prick badmouthing him about progress etc as they clearly dont have a clue about game dev, but at the same time i can’t help by sympathise with them due to the shambolic way rocket/the team have handled external coms. Also i wholeheartedly disagreed with them assumption that dev blogs suck up such a large portion of time (not mentioned by you fraggle but by others) and the way in which rocket puts that across, complaining about having to do them, which just makes him sound like a child getting grumpy about homework. As it has been mentioned so many times before dev blogs DO NOT have to be massive, they don’t even have to be videos. They can be an A4 page on what they are working on and what is on track and what isn’t. Also now I know how they work (as mentioned in the vid) ie in a sprint esq system very similar to the tech team at my business, it would not be hard for them to collate that into a few bullet points. If they have a scrum master this would be a 15 -30 minute job max. I would much prefer that was done than rocket complain about doing dev blogs, yet spends a lot of time posting on reddit and getting abused. Although its appreciated, that sucks up FAR more time than doing devblogs guaranteed, and is arguably less useful to the community. Post a small update bi weekly and leave it at that and concentrate on working on the game. Best of both worlds. Less time spent on updating and answering people on reddit/twitter and we all stay in the loop with info that we can constructively discuss between ourselves, maybe with less senior people feeding back to rocket every so often on steller ideas and things that might actually be useful for the production of the game Also fraggle i think you are the source of 70% or so of my beanz :P keep em coming big boy XD

indeed, what was the milestone they wanted to hit again that would have made the alpha ready for release? Or was it not mentioned in the vid?

you do realise its only be in dev for just under a year and they had to tear the whole thing down and start again. I think a realistic timeframe would be a year and a half for a properly working alpha.

lets just hope we are not saying that in a years time, otherwise we will turn into those who must not be named. lol

interesting vid, seems like it is coming along nicely. Only complaint.....an alienware pc.... really? :P next time employ me and I'll build your work comps much cheaper. Pft....dell's
  8. yes, and the gameplay looks pretty dam borked , i saw a guy hitting a frozen zombie in the head for about 30 seconds and nothing happened, its hard to call it an amazing game on the basis on the footage so far. go to 3:50 Also graphics and animation is 100% relevant in this instance, hence why arma2 worked so well as a basis for dayz, because it made the experience feel realistic as it was a sim. Rust looks choppy, absolutely broken ( at this present time) and generally terrible, taking graphics out of the equations. It doesn't have a redeeming feature to it right now. Right now i would say the look of rust is more akin to the war z than anything, and its even more broken presently. Actually looking more closely is looks like its based on a less cell shaded version of tf2. It isnt just about the look its about the way it functions, it does not function like a survival game, it looks like someone has smashed their face against the keyboard and tried to release an alpha. I dont take games based on an alpha footage, but when some absolute ingrate try's to say games like rust are even in the slightest comparable to dayz, even in its current state, and are taking your attention away from it, its actually laughable.
  9. have you just seen the sceenies or actual gamplay footage? Its not about hyper realism its about looking like its been designed for a ps2
  10. Rust really.....? Have to admit the footage i have seen from it looks pretty dam awful. Early stages, but it doesn't even look as impressive as the dayz mod let alone what we have seen on the SA.
  11. thats what i am hitting at though, its a bit of a mission to sift through all the shit to find the important stuff. As you said SmashT if they just stuck the most important stuff on the devblog, where it should be, it would solve most problems with communication, As it stands (as you mentioned) you have to visit a lot of places to find out whats gwaning. Either way, thanks for the links matey :)
  12. i hope you are referring to the community as the mods/ days staff members who frequent the forums. It shouldn't be down to me or you to compile this information and do all the leg work when it could just be posted in one place, ie the actual dev blog tumblr which is for specifically that. In the end it is only hurting their cause and their rep as a fair few people dont have fucking clue whats happening, there is no consistency in their communication in both placement and timing. Their external communication is pretty awful, there is a lot of it, but they way they deliver it is a shambles. Also @ fraggle, indeed, but to be really interested it seems you have to frequent the forums / follow on twitter, its harder for those who don't to dip in and out, one cant expect everyone to be as obsessive and ontop of things as we are :P I just think a bit of organisation on their side would be a nice sign they are indeed serious about their external communication to everyone.
  13. actually he does have a point fraggle. Unless you frequent the forums its hard to keep up to date, there is no single place where everything is collated. I instantly did a double tack and thought AH the devblog tumblr, then when i looked it hasnt been updated in a month, none of the rezzed vids are up, no game play, nothing! Dont get me wrong i dislike the radio idea, and would only like it provided it was VERY limited and very hard to troll with. Either way what he (Rek) has said is wrong, but he does have a point, its bloody impossible to fine one space where all of this stuff is listed. It might even be good to have a sticky listing all the devblogs, gamplay vids in one thread and just add to it as and when stuff is released. Again it just goes to show they need to increase external communication, if indeed it is as important as rocket has said. I am starting to dislike his methods more and more in the last few months, and its upsetting as the I love what he is trying to do.
  14. Really not sure how well the radios will work, as long as it is a entirely user generated thing (ie broadcasts) and you cant just slap any junk on it. IE blast out random music will running around chreno with a boombox on your shoulder. To do that you would need to find CD's ( maybe in the supermarkets) and they were incredibly rare and play them in the correct cd player. Or even find any MP3 but it only has a limited amount of charge. Also you would have to tune the radio to find stations ( if there are any, and they should be server specific, ie you can only hear what over people on the server are broadcasting. Also people say the trolling will be amazing, like its a good thing. I can imagine a small feature becoming terribly annoying after a short period of time, even rocket was getting annoyed by it in the videos.
  15. Just give it to me before the end of august and i will pay a small ransom to play this at iseries with 12 of my mates! Nom nom nom
  16. i know this is boarderline, but i fucking love the way that he says MMO, "EIMEIMO" I dated a kiwi for 2 years and she used to say it the same way XD Also i would like to refer to the 4 minute mark, the emphasis on community involvement...If it is that "critical" and the community made dayz what it is, as he puts it, i think the forum should be the first port of call or at least a major port of call, but hey thats just me? I mean he talks about terrible internal communication, but then i don't see a huge amount of external community communication apart from reddit and twitter. I feel those two mediums should be for snippets, soundbites and bouncing basic ideas, the forums should at least give us some more in depth info about it all rather than being neglected. Even if its making a reddit/twitter forums thread to keep track of his other stuff on there. As it stands it feels he praises the community and emphasizes the communication to them/us, but we at the forums are still scratching our heads half the time as to what is going on. It feels a little like a kick in the nuts actually.
  17. you are aware this is pre alpha footage correct? Or are you just trolling?
  18. i doubt the will look the same in game, if they do those are the best looking/ most realistic weapons to have ever graced a game.
  19. it will be a war z situation when it has been "in development for 2 years" and it’s still a steaming pile of shit. Its been 9 months or so, considering it is a different project now than when they began expect a properly playable game in 1 and a half years- 2 years. So in essence if it still looks broken and glitchy as hell by the one and a half year mark then you can scream bloody murder. I know i will because I don’t think a “ it will be ready stance” can be an excuse for not pushing to get it released within an acceptable timeframe. But i think we are all jumping the gun a bit now. It’s just we have all been following the progress religiously since its announcement and as a result it is not living up to our own expectations which are on the whole unrealistic, as we all are expecting a finished product. When it hits beta it should be properly polished and a fully playable game, if it isn’t, or if it starts reaching the two year mark then we are really upshit creek. Also so will rocket, I doubt he has unlimited funding, and BI isn’t a massive company, they can’t fund him forever.
  20. i dont think he was referring to the framerate, rather the glitchyness, But it is an alpha.... lets hope its improves quickly before i start sounding like the warz fanboy crowd who used its and alpha/beta excuse to defend every shitty aspect in the game ;)
  21. i am not even going to use this as any kinda of benchmark as i instantly picked a lot of holes in it, i don't think i actually want to play this until its a fully functional beta. It will be amazing once its done, but currently although it does show a lot has been done, there are certain levels of expectation i have built up in my head which are of course not going to be met in the alpha. I really do hope they overhaul the player animations as they feel very rigid at points and zombies obviously need A LOT of work as well, lets hope now they have sorted the majority of the architecture etc it should come on leaps and bounds. Better pathfinding, animations, aesthetics etc. I think people picking holes in it it entirely warranted, but at the same time it shouldn't be OMG IT LOOKS RUBBISH/negative in the slightest. They have pretty much created an entirely new game, and with such a small team that is admirable, yes there is a huge amount of work to make it a fully functioning game, but at the same time they have been working on it for under a year. To be honest for the timeline this seems like decent progress. This isnt a warz situation where nothing is done, the progress is real and its there for all to see. Once the alpha is released and the bare bones of the game are sorted we should see some real aesthetic progress, if by the time its in beta and its still as glitchy, then thats something to really worry about. But currently, everything looks about on track. The issue is time is of the essence here, gamers and people in general are fickle, the hype around the game is somewhat faded into the background, and i think to fully utilise the mods wave of popularity rocket and the team really have to kick into gear now. Jesus there were a lot of typos in there, almost didn't make sense XD
  22. Spot on mate. You have a very lucky insight into the workings of the game, dam i wish i was testing it at the moment! :P But from the outside looking in, it is hard, and i imagine its hard as a developer from the inside looking out to see what all the who har is about. The client/server architecture is a massive project, a dev blog logging their progress on it would keep people somewhat placated. The argument is that they dont have time to convey their work and the time could be better spent on actually working on it. Having said that surely everyone meets at least once a week to discuss progress, all it needs is for one person to take minutes/bullet points as a weekly update to share their work and the snags they are hitting/goals they are reaching. hell i am just throwing ideas out there. Ideally they need to hire a PR guy ( *cough* me *cough* :P ), but i understand they probably don't have the budget to do that.
  23. Maybe to you it implies they are doing the work on more important stuff, to others it shows they have just created a wank looking UI. Dont get me wrong i agree with you TurkishMonkey, but at the same time i dont think that because a picture shows one thing it surely means another with no real evidence to back it up, that’s just speculation at its finest. The more enlighten'd of people on the forum do know work is being done on the most important aspects, but 90% of people don’t really get that. People can only work off what is fed to them in the devblogs and screenies, and considering they are so lite I think that people bitching about it is warranted to a degree. Its all well and good people saying they are working on stuff but not providing evidence just means we could be sitting in a warz boat here. I am not saying we are, just you can see how people might be distrustful. Also when you are working on an "it will be ready when its ready" policy, i think keeping the community informed and up to date is paramount. Yes other games dont do much better but 90% of the time dayz can properly be compared to other games, its just not possible. It’s been about 9-10 months since the SA was announced, and one missed deadline and 6 months later and they produce a UI that looks wank, I can see where those who are bitching are coming from. Not to say I agree, but maybe there's a bit of logic behind it. Doesn't excuse gummy from repeating the same old boring line. In short gummy we understand you, hear you and now want to discuss something different.
