You have too much time on your hands .... :P

I salute you sir! hahahah that really tickled me. Dont get me wrong i have sympathy for the dumb shit he says but not the fact he hasn’t learned his lesson. He isnt a PR man, neither is he a project manager. He needs to realise his limitations and get help from others. Hes been very stubborn on this project, and instead of holding his hands up and going “I know nothing about PR I’ll get someone to communicate for me” or “I know nothing about managing a team on a project this big, and its impacting on the game and my ability to work on it”, he continues to trudge down the same path, all the time creating more and more bad press for himself. Look I like Dean I think he’s a top lad and I think the majority of the shit slinging in his direction is simply due to miscommunication. He needs to realise he can’t do everything, and it isn’t actually in the games interest for him to do everything.

yes a dev build state, not the alpha. We are talking about the alpha and not the current state dayz is in. my point is simply that minecraft would have not released as an alpha to the public in the dev build state, and neither should dayz. Despite his talents and being an intelligent man, Dean has a propensity to saying downright stupid shit. Stating something like that is just asking for it to whip up a reaction. He needs to be less stubborn and leave the external communication to others, cos he has made a right pigs ear of it so far! Look its probably been misconstrued but in the end he needs a lesson in PR, because so far hes stepped in so many times hes going to be covered in shit soon.

no, just no. I have played minecraft for some time, not from very first release, but i have known many who have and to compare the two is laughable. Its like saying minecraft without being able to dig/ mine would have been fine as an alpha, yes zombies are that much part of the game. Its a freeking zombie game, and it is that much of a CORE feature. What you described in minecraft were not core, no way in hell, not compared to what we are talking about here. Dayz loses everything that made it different and interesting if you scrap the zombies. Mental exercise, go back, learn to argue your point correctly, and realise how much of a fool you sound. Hell if it isnt too much to grasp google alpha release and gaming. 99% of the time an alpha release is a fully functioning ( if somewhat buggy) release with all the core features at least implemented in some form or another. As mentioned before, learn the term "placeholder" in relation to game releases, then lecture me. TL;DR learn to google.

not yet, but i would like to, their build 10 update video ( on steam) is brilliant. Very open about their dev and how its going and the current state of the game ( ie it looks like it been developed for a ps2.) lol. This is kind of my point there are some amazing projects out there that could easily eclipse dayz if Dean doesn't get his ass in gear.

The only reason you dont think they are a core feature is due to the zombies being broken in the mod, and despite what you might think some of the best stories and the tensest moments i have had is with the zombies involved, just the noise was enough to scare you on a dark server when you first started playing. But do not compare this to the mod, this game is a zombie survival game, hence the name, hence the genre, hence the popularity. Hell hence why Dean is making it. What happens to the backstory, the lore, or the fact he was using a close family member a virologist to help explain it all? Throw it all out the windows, oops you just have a shallow game with no story no direction and no premise. *slow clap* well done you just destroyed one of the most interesting games to have come along in the last 5 years. You take that out and the game wouldn't sell at all, so to be blunt you are just outright wrong, so please just stop trolling because you sound like an idiot.

no but even as an alpha, a dayz without zombies is just hilarious. As mentioned before having a core feature missing entirely from the game is just a bit silly. Alphas should have the core features implemented even at least in a very basic manner. Basic skin and basic animations, probably only one skin to start with, but it should be there. They should at least have a placeholder, the issue here then is that they shouldnt release it as a paid alpha, ( i dont know what the current idea is) Release as a free alpha, get the zombies worked in, they release as a paid for early access. IF they release it in its current state as a paid for early access there WILL be a backlash.
-
i really hope all this talk about it being released tomorrow is wrong, the terrifying thing is that if it is we know that shit all work has been done on the zombies. You are going to get some seriously butthurt fanboys and a lot of hate for dean if it does release ( even as an alpha) in such a state.

This just goes to show how little you actually know about game dev, I aint exactly the most learned but jesus you make forest gump look like a genius. An open alpha is NOT that flexible, you seem to think that a game can just be chopped and changed and features added and removed without having any cause and affect during an active open alpha test. Adding in a core feature can cause all sorts of issues. Also calling you a troll is not childish, it's just an observation considering the bile you have spewed all over this thread from the get go. Either that or your are just simply clueless. I have known numerous people who have worked in game dev, and releasing an alpha which such an integral, and also complicated, feature is a surefire way to shoot yourself in the foot and eventually sunset the entire project. Lastly, testing the game without Zed's is just pointless, it wouldn't be a ZOMBIE survival game then, it isn't that hard to wrap your head around. -

Ok you must be trolling, and with every post it just sounds more and more like you are playing devil's advocate just to get a reaction. I don't know what games you have tested but the general consensus in alpha testing on games is that after the alpha has been approved devs should not be adding features ( core ones at least). Game development tends to be more blurry than traditional software, but i have never known a game to come out lacking such a core feature. Alpha's are for testing, hence why all features should be implemented so they can be TESTED. Generally if anything is missing from an alpha build is its sheen/artwork/stability,not core features. You want to know why? Its pretty simple actually, you ad a core feature like z's halfway through an alpha after optimizing various things along the way, there is a very good change implementing a core feature like that would break a multitude of other things, including the fixes you have implemented on other parts of a game. The alpha has to be a bare bones complete version without the cherry on top otherwise it just simply isnt an alpha. Whether or not people will enjoy the game without zombies or not is irrelevant, but lacking a features such as the zombies in a zombie game means very few people would class it as an alpha. You are approaching this from a gameplay perspective, which is entirely wrong, you need to see the detrimental effect this will have on the game in the long run. It will ultimately lengthen the dev time till its a full retail release. -

Ok so I have been avoiding the forums for a while because frankly I have gotten a bit sick of being told one thing and then another happening. Most people (especially Fraggle) will know I am a fan of the game, and Dean as a whole, but I have been openly critical of the way in which this project has been managed. But the blind rage and hate flinging about it just a bit annoying. People are being pig headed on both sides. It has been just over year if I am correct since Dean announced it would become a standalone. Please keep some objectivity while discussing the topic. I am going to be honest, BI made a mistake, and despite his talents and vision Dean is and was not ready to lead a project of this size. Not due to lack of skill as a programmer/game dev, but management of an entire project is a huge task. Sometimes it takes a project manager with slightly less emotional investment to make sure these things stay on track. At the moment things seem rather chaotic. Don’t get me wrong there is a flipside to that when you have an outside body influencing the release of the game that has too much power. (look at sega and rome2, what a bunch of crap that was). The issue is Dean has too much to focus on, and because he doesn’t trust anyone else its impacting on the timeline of the game, he NEEDS to be more flexible. He should be able to devote his time wholly to the game, but can’t, and keeps making promises like daily updates etc which he ultimately ends up flaking out on. This is not only damaging his reputation but its going to have a negative impact on the game and those who will buy it. He can’t adopt the “it will be ready when its ready” approach anymore, it just isn’t viable and will set him up for a flop. Interest will wane, and people will forget about it, and ultimately it makes him and the team seem lazy. Dean had a unique selling point before, he doesn’t anymore, there are zombie survival games left right and centre now. There is always value in taking your time and doing things right, but it is also of critical importance to try and get things done within a time frame. The game will be amazing regardless, but he will lose money and a large portion of his player base if he doesn’t really start getting his team in gear. Superfically ( and to those who don’t realise the work done on the game) it is simply a tarted up version of the mod, with still very broken zombies. It’s going to piss off a lot of people if it is released with the game in such a state. Gamers are fickle and hate being lied to, even unintentionally and I think suddenly going MIA is just going to further exacerbate the shit slinging. I don’t deny this game is a massive project, but at the same time although a massive amount of work has gone into pretty much redoing the engine, it was still a basis from which to work, and understandably people are starting to doubt the amount of work actually being done due to what seems like a snail paced development. Ultimately it will be an amazing game, but I truly feel Dean needs to salvage something of his reputation and try and quicken the pace of development before people lose all interest in it. Bigger and better funded studios are going to be picking up on the genre and if he doesn’t move he will get very quickly muscled out. -
Booooooo :(

Yer true man, but Linux and mac support is coming on fast, as soon as everything becomes multiformat, I am jumping ship from windows. Also windows 8 can go and die in a hole somewhere.
-
same could be said for windows, horribly heavy and inefficient OS :P

haha indeed, i just built my mate a PC for £1000 and its a beast. 4670k, 8 gb ram, 120 gb ssd 1 tb storage gtx 770, 750 w psu (for sli down the line) etc. I also added in a £100 all in one cooler into that build ( h100i,) never used to trust all in one loops but they are getting better nowadays. Still dont come near to my custom loop though ;) an equivalent alienware is about 1,800. They charge an extra 160 to add 1 1tb sata drive, i mean wtf!

Really? I would throw it out the window, cheap piece of dell rubbish! :P custom builds ftw!
