You get hungry/thirsty even when offline?
PieceOfDust replied to Kuroi (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
One can of food and one drink? Man, I guess I'm paranoid about running out... I always try to keep 2 canteens and four cans of food on me at all times, plus extra soda cans if I have spare slots in my backpack. -
Yes; now I can butcher animals for meat so I don't have to keep running back into towns for beans. I still need to find firewood or a hatchet, but that should be easy since barns are on the outskirts of civilization.
-
I'm having slight FPS problems, too. Nothing horrible, but it's a major hazard for me in the cities because things appear blurry when I look around. Now that I've found a knife, I'll be chilling in the woods until it's fixed.

Why I play a female character even though I am a dude

Does Directional Channel voice chat work?

I tried to use it once, which prompted the guy I was talking with to type, "are you talking?" I just type now. -
Why I play a female character even though I am a dude
PieceOfDust replied to gogozombie's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now, I'm no bandit, and am in fact friendly in most situations, but if I encounter a female character with a man's voice, I'll shoot "her" on the spot. -
I was wondering when the majority of SURVIVORS (not you bean bandits) shoot at other players, and how that will change when the un-bandit update is released. Personally, I always shoot in self-defense or if someone spooks me. I also shoot bandits in cities. Outside of that, I try to avoid most people unless I really need supplies for some reason. If someone notices me first and asks if I'm friendly, I reply with "yes" and try to get away from that person ASAP, usually because he has just announced my location in Side Chat. Oh I forgot to mention: this will not change when the un-bandit update happens. I'll still follow gunshots in cities and shoot people if I think they're shooting at other players. I don't/won't do this because I want to be a "good guy;" I do it because it's an easy way to get loot without being a d-bag.

Setting up / cutting down barbed wire
PieceOfDust replied to Callow's topic in New Player Discussion
You have to target the posts and use the mouse wheel menu to remove it. I've removed it before with no problems. As for how to place it... I have no clue at all. -
Confused Newbie - chat problems, bleeding for no reason, etc.
PieceOfDust replied to tinyone's topic in New Player Discussion
The mouse-wheel will only let you switch between your primary and secondary weapon (and do things like open doors, etc). You probably accidentally hit 'F,' which switches between your active weapon and other gear (like flares, chemlights, and grenades). So, in summary: -Mouse wheel to change which weapon is active -F to change between active weapon and other gear Best of luck! -
Things to be aware of at the start
PieceOfDust replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
It is pretty confusing at first, but new players will get the hang of it quickly. While we're talking about it: -Most items have to be used from the gear menu (G) by right-clicking them. -Most loot has to be picked up by opening up the gear menu while you're over it. -Some loot (backpacks, weapons) can be picked up by using the mouse wheel while you're over them. - IMPORTANT: taking a backpack will leave your current backpack AND ITS ITEMS on the ground. You will have to open your old pack while it's on the ground to get the items back. -Doors, gates, and ladders are operated by using the mouse wheel. -You can switch between primary and secondary weapons by using the mouse wheel. -You can switch between your active weapon and certain items (flares, chemlights, and grenades) by pressing F. -L will activate flashlights and weapon lights. There are probably things I'm forgetting. Don't worry about memorizing this list; you'll learn the stuff you need to as you go. -
Playing at night with just flares is possible, and can even be quite fun as long as you're not all SUPER SERIOUS GUYS I CAN'T DIE IT WOULD RUIN MY REAL LIFE! Just try to get off of the coast and away from the bean bandits. That being said, flashlights are fairly common, and chemlights/flares are even more common. I personally prefer the flashlight. It doesn't provide as much illumination as the flare or the chemlight, but that's the point.

Things to be aware of at the start
PieceOfDust replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
-If you need to get past zombies, crawl. -NEVER EVER crawl down stairs or steps - you might very well break a leg. -Never completely trust anyone unless you know them from outside of the game. -Your guns are LOUD; crouch-run to lead zombies away from the horde before you shoot them. -Cities and airfields are great spots for loot, but are extremely dangerous. -You can spend hours crawling through the mud to get the perfect gear setup only to get killed by someone for your beans. IT HAPPENS! Remember, DYING IS FUN! -
Whoever completely barricades buildings
PieceOfDust replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's called "the female voice" in the gaming world. Anyway, walling off a building is pointless except for keeping zeds out; all anybody has to do is switch servers to get inside. -
Establishing a Player-Run NW Airfield Depot
PieceOfDust replied to Publik's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Those are good points... however, I would like to point out that no matter WHAT you're doing, you can be shot for ANY reason (or even no reason at all). Setting up anything in any location and announcing your presence will draw bandits like flies. Part of the challenge - and therefore part of the fun - will be fighting them off. For this reason, I will have to agree with others before me and say that we should set up in Cherno or Elektro. While there may be more bean bandits there, I believe that it is actually a safer place to be for the reasons mentioned above. The close spawns also mean that we can re-group quickly if we're attacked. In any event, we're going to need to get a vehicle running to help make supply runs and to store our stuff in hidden tents across the country. -
I an hour or so, I will enter the NW airfield for the first time. My intention is to get a better weapon that what I currently have (the Winchester). How dangerous is the NW airfield compared to Cherno or Elektro? Do you guys have any tips on getting in and coming out alive?

One of you guys joined Dallas 8 a while ago and kept raging in ALL CAPS every time you died. I found it quite amusing. -
I see that nobody has made the joke yet.

Things you have learned from playing DayZ
PieceOfDust replied to Evilsausage's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
-Forget crouching when near zombies: go prone and you'll rarely if ever be spotted. You can even "fast crawl" and they won't ever see you unless you manage to bump into one. -That being said, NEVER EVER crawl down stairs or steps. That's a good way to break a leg. -Gunfire means one of two things: Either someone else is distracted, or you're in deep s**t. -Speaking of shooting, if you do any of it, finish up and get out of the area ASAP. -Approach towns from the side. Always take a look at the treelines before you go in. -Never completely trust anyone that you didn't meet outside of the game. -
I wouldn't have thought about that, Lev. I'll be sure to remember that next time I need to make a visit.

Thanks for the help, everyone! For anyone who's interested, here's how things went down: I approached from the north, made it through, and stopped in the woods behind the fire station. I saw no dead bodies or abnormal zombie movements. I found an AKM in the firehouse garage (and let me say here that I'm ASSUMING this building was the firehouse; I don't know for sure). The hangar to the south was empty, but the second hangar had some AKM mags and morphine. I wanted to check the barracks, but a zombie snuck up on me when I was looting the second hangar, and the shots attracted a small group from outside. I got the hell out of Dodge in case anyone saw or heard. Thanks again for the advice!

Thanks, everybody. I'll keep all of that in mind.

Establishing a Player-Run NW Airfield Depot
PieceOfDust replied to Publik's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm down for for this. As someone mentioned, it would be awesome if we could get a helicopter or some cars running. My Steam ID is PieceOfDust -
Date/Time: May 24th, ~4:00 PM What happened: A bandit's body got stuck on a ladder after falling normally for a few feet. Where you were: Cherno What you were doing: Shooting a bandit with the trusty ol' Winchester. *Timeline of events before/after error: Several zombies had been killed by that bandit on the same ladder. They were stuck too for a bit. Forgive me if this is a bug with ARMA 2's engine and not the Day Z mod.

You, you and you. You are all part of the problem.

But I liked my bandit skin, even if I only got it from defending myself. :(
