I have been a project manager in R&D environments for over 15 years. I am quite familiar with the risks involved, and the methods that can be employed to mitigate against them. The PM techniques are general, and not industry-specific. Besides, they have already publicly disclosed one release date, and botched it. So...did they not know what they were doing then, or now? Since we are getting personal, please disclose how much experience you have in either game development, R&D, or PM.

1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
iegle replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes, and that is one of the drawbacks that I referred to in the statement you quoted. There are others too. One easy foolproof solution to each situation will quickly render the game formulaic and dull. -
Excellent thread. The lack of a public release date does suggest to me that there is insufficient employment of sound project management principles on the developer's side. This does not bode well for a timely release, or even a release at all. Many great games languished and died on the developing table. A sense of urgency is warranted. Besides, we are talking about release of an unfinished alpha here. Surely if the developers knew what they were doing they could make a public commitment. This sort of performance would not be tolerated in my field. At any rate, I'm happy with the mod.

1.8 Makes Melee Nearly Pointless
iegle replied to StrangeOrange's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Choosing to fight with a melee weapon rather than a ranged weapon should come with consequences. Taking on a zed(s) in hand-to-hand combat should be risky. You don't want the risk? Use ranged weapons with the drawbacks that come with those. I think it is fine. -
How the hell do you suppose to know where you are?
iegle replied to SeaNanners (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh, yes. Follow roads. They are the safest places to be in the game; by all means do this. -
After taking a few months off, I'm back in the woods of Chernarus trying out the new features in the Mod. Recently I was raiding a deer stand, there was a crouched Zed in the tower. I took a shot at him with my G17, and must have hit him in the shoulder rather than the head due to his crouched posture facing away from me. He did not die, oh no. Rather this bloke stood up and pounced on me from the top of the stand. He landed right on top of me with the following consequences: He diedI was knocked unconsciousI was bleedingI was infectedI was left "shell-shocked", with only ~10% of my hearing for the remainder of the session I must say, this was an unexpected surprise. Is this new ability of Zeds as designed, because it is pretty awesome.

Zeleno: Treasure trove of the intelligent
iegle replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Agreed, this is my typical new-spawn route - although from Zeleno / Green Mountain I typically swing east to Zub or north-east to Stary. I avoid that clusterf&%$ NWAF unless I'm bored. I guess I don't have real balls. :( -
I became a KoS sniper today...and I'm not sure if I should feel bad about it

Are zombies too alert and spot you too easy?
iegle replied to Jex's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree with this. I find Zed awareness is nearly right as it is now. If one is careful and stays motionless when a Zed is looking in your direction one can remain unseen at a reasonable distance. I find I can also crouch-walk in their periphery with a good chance of remaining undetected. Crawling can be resorted to in high-risk situations. Unless you crawl right under their noses they don't detect you. I also agree that a greater chance to be knocked down / tackled when running by a Zed would be a cool upgrade. The only other issue I have is as noted above by Razor, it is far too easy to walk right up behind a Zed undetected and take him down. It seems that their hearing could be bumped up a bit. I have also had no issues losing agro, a related point that is contrary to the observations of several others here. -
What's with that scarecrow? Silly scarecrow, you belong in a farmer's field, not on the side of a hill.

Did anyone else feel dayz felt cooler first time playing?
iegle replied to poodude28 (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I still remember every detail of my first character's life over 9 months ago now. I spawned in Three Valleys, agroed some zombies crossing the coast road, and ran for my life up the escarpment, finally losing the zeds. On the other side of the ridge I spotted a barn, and proceeded to spend the next 3 hours figuring out how to elude the zombies and get inside. The elation I felt when I found a hatchet in there was awesome. I took too long though, and started dying of thirst. I was forced to take more and more risks trying to find something to drink, and eventually got badly wounded by a zombie. With my vision failing and my throat burning from lack of drink I fled to the woods and died alone. I learned a valuable lesson about early post-spawn priorities. I still get sad when I die though. :) I have only died about a half-dozen times in 9 months, I do my best to stay alive at all costs. -

what's the best loot you lost from a untimely death caused by yourself or a friend.
iegle replied to jdtherocker's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I had a character that was shot in the legs on day 1. I fortunately killed my assailant by spamming the treeline with M1014 rounds (found the M1014 in a deerstand near Bor), then crawled from Bor to Balota to get morphine. You might say why bother? Crawling for 3 days to save a 1 day old character is pointless, but DayZ is about survival, and I don't give up. I was paid off for my efforts, the character wound up surviving for over 40 days, after which time I was almost fully geared by my standards (coyote pack, M4A3 CCO with lots of standard and SD mags, medic medical supplies, camo clothing...). I happened on a heli crash site outside of Stary wherein I found NVGs. I was so happy I jizzed myself, then decided to take out the zeds at the crash site. I squeezed off a round only to realize that in my post-orgasmic afterglow it was not my M4A3 that I had equipped but rather a M67 frag grenade. -
longest time you have spent crawling for morphine?
iegle replied to jdtherocker's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Bor to Berezino. Took 3 days. I'm scarred for life. I actually had to get used to the experience of walking upright again. Decided I didn't like the vertigo it induced, so now I crawl everywhere. I take morphine just for the lulz. -

3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
iegle replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You spawn with a bandage and a bottle of painkillers in a small pack. Sophisticated two-way radio equipment is so self-evidently available that it does not even appear in your inventory, akin to your shoes, or hat? -

3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
iegle replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Agreed, but the abuse of it has become worse as the game has trended towards a more PvP-oriented style of play. -
3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
iegle replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I for one agree with every issue that the OP raised. At the hands of the community the once great game has devolved to the state it is in now. I don't enjoy playing it in the current state, and have moved on to other pursuits for the most part. I didn't complain about it though, I just gave up on the game. As dissenters here and on the other thread have pointed out, metagaming is allowed and here to stay, so why bother? How sad. Applejaxc to his credit is making a forlorn hope effort to raise his concerns and perhaps reverse the trend. I think the only practical option would be a hardcore private server open only to players who have a similar approach to the game. -
