Don't even make third-person an option for DayZ standalone
[email protected] replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
@Jars - OOOOOOH BURN!!! I wish I had the presence of mind you clearly do. *sarcasm detected* The attitude comes from listening to idiots use the exact same arguments day after day. You can't tell me how this game is supposed to be played if you don't even know yourself. DayZ is not an FPS, so any argument using that as its basis falls flat on its ass. For future reference: This is not a topic that should be recreated every couple of weeks. All facets of the discussion have been dissected time and time again. Use the search bar. If you can't even figure out how the forum works, I have absolutely no faith in your judgement or ability. EDIT: Case in point, there was the EXACT SAME DISCUSSION on the first page of suggestions when this topic was created. -
Don't even make third-person an option for DayZ standalone
[email protected] replied to Pomegranate's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
There's nothing to add to the discussion. It's been discussed to death. That won't stop it. The retrograde drivel never ends. voodoo clearly has a handle on the situation. And I agree with him 100% IMO If you play this game as an FPS, you're not doing it right. If you're not doing it right, your opinion on game features and mechanics is irrelevant. -
I like the idea. If you're driving off-road and it starts to rain, you might want to think about getting onto some firmer ground.

Embers don't crackle. Vapours trapped in wood make the crackling sounds. If it's going to be intuitive, it should be logical, first and foremost.

Slightly sllly buuuuuuuuuuut
[email protected] replied to zfleming12's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I don't see why not. Maybe not the Segway variety, since it would be fairly restricted in terms of maneuvreability. :P More than mopeds and scooters, I would like to see a greater variety of bicycles. Fast, on-road bikes would have a speed advantage on paved surfaces compared to a full-suspension mountain bike. Countered by the mountain bike losing less speed and grip (proportionally) off-road. I'd like to see a full range of options, just for flavour if nothing else. In a sandbox environment, your choices (where practicable) should be all about personal preference. -
The risk of giving away your position should always be a factor IMO. Smoke, light, sound and (hardly likely in a computer game) smell would all be tell-tale signs. Even something as simple as a re-write of the body investigation mechanic could be used to see if a fire-pit is still warm, to gauge how long it has been since someone was there, etc. More on-topic. The gear mentioned in the OP is usable with both a fire and a stove, so isn't exactly a vital addition. More for variety, when development gets to that stage. Tins can go straight on to the fire if you want to heat them up. Just remember to open them first.More important than pots and pans, in that particular situation, you're going to need a spoon.

How do I become a Hero?
[email protected] replied to Jammin J's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The best way to make sure you're always working towards "Hero" status is to find some friendlies to trek with. Having someone to watch your back will help in most situations, and keeping your buddies healthy will keep you in the good books. Rossums quoted the wiki, but I'm sure, when we still had a debug menu, killing Zeds who were attacking other players was seen as a positive action. Killing bandits doesn't lower your standing, neither does killing someone who shot you first. -
Wishlist of new weapons.
[email protected] replied to Bessonica Zabora's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Am I the only one who sees that flamethrowers and molotovs would come with a serious downside? Depending on the Zeds' nerve and how long it takes them to burn beyond functionality. There's a good chance you'll be getting chased by flaming Zeds for a while. And that's probably not much fun. I'm pretty sure these guys don't care too much about pain. It'll likely take more than a bit of scorched flesh to stop them. -

Standalone Poll: First Person Only?
[email protected] replied to Trizzo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This discussion isn't going anywhere because, clearly, "sensible", "rational" and "logical" are foreign concepts to many. The game is the first in a new franchise, you do not know how it's supposed to be played. It isn't even out yet. Get a grip. It really wouldn't bother me either way. While I know which I'd prefer, it's not up to me. A "suggestions" section in a forum doesn't make the game's design a democracy. The FPS-only bitchers on here would struggle to even fill a single server. No need to cry about it. The hypocrisy some of you fellas spout is ridiculous. If you're adamant all the "same-old" arguments are used up, keep your trap shut. Simple as. Que Sera, Sera. -
Suggestions: New area's to explore, and new gear.
[email protected] replied to Bourneco's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Besides the fact that we've been told that survivors are immune (this might still be subject to change), an infection system which turns players in to Zeds would break the game. If it's revealed that we aren't immune, AI control of "DEAD by Zed" players might be cool. (walking loot-piles) but I don't want people getting killed by Zeds, on purpose, just to come back as zeds, to grief survivors. I was under the impression that, first and foremost, this is a survival game. The aim should be to stay alive. If they have any medication which could prevent/cure the Zed infection, There would surely be more organised survivors (military, government, civil servants etc.). I don't want to see any NPCs, so I prefer everyone else to stay dead or infected. If a system of irreversible infection is implemented, It would severely hinder the long-term survivor's scavenging options. Can't go near any zombies? You would HAVE to resort to banditry to get food/ammo etc. This should definitely be avoided as much as possible. Sickness should be a threat, but not to the extent that it becomes unavoidable.ALSO: There's an Edit Post button. -
A non-OP, pseudo-level system (not what you think it is)
[email protected] replied to GeneticFreak's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This isn't a place for dickswinging-by-numbers. If the entire purpose of your "level up" suggestion is to remain indefinitely pointless, then there's no point to it. Go buy a sexy, sexy calculator if you get off on sets of numbers. -
Play that funky music - More leisure options
[email protected] replied to GodOfGrain's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
On the topic of playing cards, I would like to see them implemented as simply a deck of cards, so you can play any game you want. No fixed in-game rules, just a deck of cards and a little bit of freedom. I might have just missed all the examples, but I've never seen it done before. There's been poker, blackjack, hearts and solitaire. But the opportunity to sit down and teach some dodgers how to play Switch, Cheat or any game you can think of, would kick ass. It also seems like the sort of idea an Anti-Game would adopt. Here's hoping. ^_^ -
Standalone Poll: First Person Only?
[email protected] replied to Trizzo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm sure you think your potential disappointment is revolution fuel but, to be frank, 1st person camera will make a poor tool for representation of player status and restricts awareness to an unnatural degree. Yes, holding Alt to look around makes up for some of the restrictions, but it doesn't negate them. Not by a long shot. As for bugs dictating design, isn't that what alpha/beta testing is for? We've got to see what SA does with these mechanics. Personally, having thought about it, I find the threat of breaking your own leg to be engaging and authentic (within reason), just too easy. Besides that, if I'm crawling around on the floor I should be confident of my own body positioning at all times. Even with paper shins I would have the awareness to prevent injury without literally having to look over my shoulder. 3dp may be a break from authenticity, but it's a perfectly logical method of compensating for the lack of sensory perception. To be perfectly honest, I just feel that different players take immersion from different factors, and to want gameplay restricted to your preference is selfish. A well-implemented "context sensitive" camera would be fantastic, but I can't imagine it being as easy as it sounds. Swap *wide panorama* 3dp for an over-shoulder cam and remove crosshairs entirely and I would be a happy bunny. I still can't understand how people can engage in combat with 3dp. AIM YOUR DAMN GUN, FFS! -
@OP I'd say you deserve a bright pink shemagh, for being a KoS coward. I need to get a copy of the mikster thesaurus. It seems you're using "weak" as an antonym for "ignorant". There are already a lot of promising on-going discussions regarding potential substitutes for the bandit/hero system. Go flex your lexicon there.

Standalone Poll: First Person Only?
[email protected] replied to Trizzo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I reckon shoulder-cam would be pretty spot-on. There's no need for the OTT zoomout 3dp that we have just now. I'm pretty sure a few pages ago I had Res 4 screens compared to DayZ screens as an example. No way I'm going to rake for the post though, the forum is 504 timeout hell recently. :P -
Standalone Poll: First Person Only?
[email protected] replied to Trizzo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Can you elaborate on this a little? The way I see it the main goal of ARMA is: Don't get shot. The main goal of DayZ is: Don't get shot or mauled. Effective use of cover and concealment is pretty critical to being successful at either. Why should DayZ be 3DP=ON when most PvP and TvT ARMA is 3DP=OFF? Cover / concealment was not what I was referring to. To elaborate: Two things stand out immediately- Bleeding + Status Breaking your legs on a tree root / stone / kerb The reason I switch to 3dp immediately after every fight is because I don't trust the HUD to tell me if I'm bleeding out. If the boss goes with his plan to minimise the "icon / health bar" clutter, this awareness will become EVEN MORE vital in SA. Case in point, disease symptoms. The second factor has become less of an issue recently (whether it was patched out or I'm becoming more careful is debatable) but it's a pisser when it happens and you know it could have been easily avoided or shouldn't have happened. (who crawls their own leg in half?) People here need to broaden their scope a little. See what's happening with this game and look at DayZ with an open mind. The fact is DayZ is not ArmA. FPS preconceptions are misconceptions by default. Colour-coded, for your convenience. DayZ ≠ ArmA -
This is why a responsible cross-section of the population are steadily working toward the eradication of optimism in all its forms. ^_^

Standalone Poll: First Person Only?
[email protected] replied to Trizzo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I don't mean to offend, but if this statement is true: then there's clearly some form of cognitive dysfunction at work. There's a *little* bit more to it than the camera view. Maybe that's beyond your comprehension. Also DayZ has more to it than ArmA, in terms of the need to have an awareness of your body. This shouldn't be a point of contention, it's simply a fact. RE: Your *joke*: Yes... console = 3dp. Go read a book or something. -
The Zed AI isn't exactly top-notch, but that's clearly an area fit for improvement. As are all survival factors. None of the things DayZ is recognised for are particularly challenging in their current state, so obviously they're going to have to be improved upon. The mod is just a taster. Advanced base construction would render the minimal challenges even more obsolete. And before you "blah blah blah" at me, it's you who's making assumptions based on the current state of things ("Zombies suck in this game") so maybe you should be the one who sticks to the mod. I'm not against base building, I just think it shouldn't be a bit of whimsy. It should be an actual accomplishment. The challenge is supposed to be overwhelming. At least, that's the game I hope to see. (From the post which you quoted in your first response)

Dynamic system of bandit recognition [#2 - rewritten and refined]
[email protected] replied to GodOfGrain's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Chances are good? What are you basing this on? If the future of DayZ is to include bases, more community interactions and generally more end-game content, players will be encouraged to take a particular server as their home. Fair do's if you don't get it. Many other people likely will. During play there are already instances where players have said "Watch out for that guy _insert name here_. He's pretending to be friendly but he's not." or "_insert name here_ has the bandit skin, but he's an OK guy. You can trust him." Community driven, player handled reputation system. To be fair, skin customisation can only add options. It's up to the players to make use of them. Of course players will change their clothing to avoid recognition, but then your buddies wouldn't be able to recognise you on sight either. -
People like me?! Have you even seen what Wasteland is about? That sort of construction is WAY too large-scale. And WAY too easy to accomplish. When you no longer have to go to cities to scavenge because your clan has stockpiled all the loot you'll ever need, that's detracted from gameplay. When the threat of zombies is meaningless because of your walls, that's detracted from gameplay. When nobody can starve to death because Dreygar has been playing farmville all day, THAT has detracted from the gameplay. I shouldn't have to explain this to you. You managed to figure out these internets all by yourself. Next step is reading and comprehension. EDIT: I'm going to assume you were just in a bad mood, for some reason. Now go wring out your tampon, you can use it again next month.

@Xainn - The point I was making is, the job is already done. Why start nitpicking? EDIT: I found this comment in the graveyard. Relevant to the point below by Ovation. It's awesome having the team being so candid about this sort of thing.

1.4 million recorded DayZmod players surely will have no bearing on sales, right? Bohemia Interactive (read: Rocket and pals) make quality games out of respect for their gaming communities and pride in their work. The phrase "entirely dependant" is a little weighty. They make the games they WANT to. Do you think because you're going to buy their product, they owe you? Sounds like YOU are the one who needs to get over themselves. FYI. People who suffer the burden of maturity don't usually feel obligated to point it out.
-
DayZ doesn't need to be marketed dude, that job has already been handled by the community. If I've offended you by pointing out the immaturity of some of the complainers, GOOD. Grow up.
