The scary truth about the firestaton...
daringd replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
wow, some people really got riled up by this! I read it as someone pointing out some trivia, as apposed to trying to out smart an entire community of players... Someone should start a thread that tries to get to the bottom of why people in forums just can't resist being completely reactionary and get involved with constant 'one-up-manship' As for the 'school' I've had my virtual wrists slapped for being a pedant about calling it an office building by friends I play with, so I just stopped and now i call it a school too (even though I know it really isn't) -
I was having an idle conversation a few days ago with a friend and we came on to the subject of being able to play as a Zombie... I know, before people jump on me and say "but you would have the intelligence of a human!" so it would kind of be hard to balance it, but we came up with some ideas for keeping things interesting. So they would have to deal with dumbing down the senses of who ever was playing a zombie, and I though aboutth e first AVP game, you could play as an Alien, and they had this funky fush-eye vision, which was pretty cool, and they saw in a different way, you could spot people from the aura they gave off and it made things interesting, you began seeing the game world in a totally different way. So what if they had a sort of black and white, or kind of black and red vision, so it killed colours, so you wouldn't see players as the guy with the bright orange rain coat or the ttsko pants, and borrow from Jurassic Park a little, have only things that move as completely visible, so when players move slowly they can't be seen very well at all, kind of like predators, but the faster they move the more distinct they become. the same would also go for zombies, so all other zombies would be the same, you wouldn't really see them unless they moved, so picking out and sorting between them and players would be hard too. The point of playing as a zombie would be to survive, that is basically what they are, living dead survival machines, so you would be trying to kill things to stay alive too. Maybe if you are killed by other zombies you would have the option to continue playing after a short time as one yourself (I nicknamed new zombie players as Zambies), still geared but now unable to use that gear, if you are killed by another player then they win your gear covered in infection. Maybe a lot of people don't see the point in this, but I do think it would add a new dimension to the game that is interesting, especially if as a zombie you could kind of collect other zombies and lead or cause small hordes. But why? how would you play as one? It would completely change the way we see zombies in game, they would no longer be just NPC fodder, but slightly smarter, more cunning and devilish. For me, that would be something worth seeing.

I'd say stick with both weapons, it can be a bit of a pain in the arse to switch between them, and you lose out on your running speed, but if you are carefully picking your way around and taking care not to be seen, you will rarely be running top speed anyway. I always go with an M4, backup sights and acog in the backpack, and a red dot on the weapon, switch around when i need to, and a fully kitted mosin. I find that the M4 is perfect for popping zambies in towns and I keep it out the whole time on the off chance I come face to face with another player and need to respond to a threat, and then the mosin can be employed for scoping out cities, sniping zambies or assholes (or the innocent depending on my play-style that day). It can be a chore getting up ladders, because you have to drop one weapon, go up, drop the other, come down, pick up the other one and go back up again, but it has paid off more than it hasn't so far. I don't use small arms at all (because I'm not a T-rex, uh-huh-huh) because I find them to be annoying and the 60 round clip size of the M4 beats everything.

I agree on this one, I can plan as carefully as a person can to get some completely clear time to play DayZ, but if my girlfriend needs me for something I can't exactly ignore her, life has a way of being complicated. I like that you can log in with no noise now because it means I can log out from a safe place and go do what I need to do, come back and log back in without fear of someone hearing me and popping a cap in my ass. On the other hand, I think it makes ghosting a real problem again, even with logout timers and log in penalties, fire fights and stand off's tend to last quite a while. As for pushers, I think maybe they are just using DayZ to fill a hole that real life can't fill, I know I do. Maybe all some people want to do is run screaming towards a building to kill the person inside.

Reading through all of this was a nightmare! The news is actually pretty vague I would say, which means as much as I want to pop a cork, I'll hold back and see what develops. I can't help feeling optimistic though I've always wished they would have used a different, more modern engine from the start... but holding judgement completely until we have more info. I hope at some point they include packs of Worther's Originals as loot. I choked on on once, but I still couldn't turn my back on them.

Aimbots... I got done by a chap using one of those once, I was hiding in a house, top floor and no way for anyone to see me from outside, I was waiting for a friend to join me and didn't move at all, just left my character there, watching the screen to make sure nothing terrible happened. I heard someone coming close and enter the house, heard them come up the stairs and then the door opened, no one came in, I had a Mosin aimed at the doorway and just waited and after about maybe a minute he side stepped into the room and got me with a single head shot immediately. Considering I made no noise, never moved and was on a Hardcore server, I had to assume the guy was using an aimbot, could be wrong, he could just have been that bad-ass, but something tells me otherwise. I hope this red helmet guy trips over some time and grazes the palms of his hands, maybe gets some grit under the skin, and I hope he's also carrying an ice cream while it happens.. the only thing worse than a fall, is a fall that involves losing ice cream.

Everything that's wrong with DayZ servers in one picture.
daringd replied to FrostDMG's topic in General Discussion
Fragnet are pretty awesome at taking down servers that are breaking the rules, they do give them a few shots across the bow, which is fair, but then they take swift action, so do gameservers, the rest I've not dealt with or they didn't seem to do anything, or did something but didn't let me know... I love reporting servers that are breaking the rules, most of them are just loot farming, and I know I'm not only spoiling someone's day, but I'm also spoiling their day by taking away an exploit they have paid good money to have. Actually, I'd say when I scroll down the server list and see something password protected, it almost makes my day because I know I'm about to spoil someone else's. I usually imagine the perp' as Dr Smith from the original Lost in Space series... "the pain, the pain!" -

I need to think about what I think about this, but on the surface, yes.. the whole of DayZ deserves a robust and simple abuse reporting system, though I will be the first to say that would be one stinker of a job. I don't have a problem with anybody playing however they want (with the exception of glitching) I just have a problem with people whining when they get killed by someone because they think for some reason that person should not have KoSed or hunted them down or whatever... Though I say all of this, I'm not saying I am 100% right, of course there is always an exception, and I'm sure there will be someone who could convince me with a reasonable argument otherwise. Peace (unless in-game) -

Completely agree with OP, The 'high loot' things is complete BS for a start though, you can't change anything about how loot spawns, apart from more and more restarts. I also don't buy the whole - for new players who want to 'learn how to play'. I spend a lot of time going into servers that claim to be 'no KoS' and PVE only and play in the way I normally would, because the rules of the game you agreed to when you bought it state that you MUST follow the rules set out, and those rules are that no servers can include names that suggest high loot, or a certain play style. These servers should not exist. On occasion I've even sought out these servers and gone in just to have some good fun banditry, there is nothing more satisfying than killing a player who thinks that for some reason no one should be shooting at them. grow up. If new players had any sense and wanted to learn how to play they should be doing so through trail and error, and they would find that right now most towns along the south coast are free of anyone, perfect for new players to go and try gearing up, I was in several completely full hardcore servers over the last week and didn't see a single other player, I heard shots a few times but never saw a soul. There is a place for servers that have a general feel or play style, but that will be in the future when private hives start, everyone who wants the safe, comfy warmth of high loot and PVE only servers will have to wait until then, and in the meantime they will have to deal with people like me who are going to come into your comfy little servers and spoil your day. Or you could just find a game that isn't DayZ, because this is how the game works and always has. -
When Map Making comes, in the far far future, what will you make?
daringd replied to hannibaldaplaya's topic in General Discussion
Definitely! I'd would suggest getting hold of them and asking permission if anyone wants to use anything they created, they might be happy about someone wanting to do something with what they created, on the other hand, they might not, which may be frustrating, but it might spur people on to create their own stuff inspired by it. Never underestimate the power of frustration! -

By the way, if anyone feels up to trying their hand at adding in towns and cities on a map, and actually knows how it all works, I'd be grateful for the help! -

click on the banner at the bottom of this and you'll see what I've begun work on, conversion to SA shouldn't be too much of a pain, though we'll have to see how this whole Nav' mesh thing goes and if that is something they'll release as a community dev tool too. -
Play style shaming seems to be a trend that never ends here on the official forums and on reddit. I wanted to take a moment to try and figure out how other people play the game and use/(ab)use the features and who might be the real personality behind the survivor. I started out as an all around goody-two-shoes, trying to help out new spawns when I could and spending the rest of my time trying to avoid other players. This reflects my real life personality somewhat, I avoid confrontation, I try to be nice when possible and make excuses for people when they screw me over, I like to find the good in people, even when it isn't there. More recently I found myself giving in to temptation while in-game and becoming a real nasty piece of work. I don't always kill on sight, most of the time I find myself circling other survivors to see what they are doing, if there are groups I try and figure out if they are nice guys or bad guys, but not for any good reason. I find myself playing the role of the guy who gets in with a small group and becomes a valuable part of it, spotting, popping zombies and sharing food and ammo, but the whole time I'm just trying to figure out who is who, how they play and how, when the time comes, I can split them up and take them out one by one. I've saved new spawns from zombies and taken them on just to have a bit of company, only to kill them after a few hours of game play and take what they worked hard to get. In-game I don't just enjoy, but get off on deception, backstabbing and taking advantage of any shred of trust I can get my dirty little paws on, but in life that is not who I am at all. Some might say this is me living out the person I really want to be, or the person I really would be without the restraints of social convention, some might suggest I'm simply enjoying playing a role and others might say that it's some kind of release, none of this is really important, but it makes me wonder what other people are like in real life verses who they are in-game, no judgements, just some decent conversation and reflection.

Nice Soundgarden quote man... I agree with almost everyone. It's not to say that's how I always play, I really enjoy a little team work with friends from time to time too, and I could see myself running the rescue force gauntlet at various times. I've come across a few really cool cats who I've nearly been double crossed by while I was trying to double cross them, and I've had a few times where I have felt a twinge of guilt at putting someone down because they had great gear, but of it all, I've enjoyed the roller coaster. I find I get frustrated with a lack of imagination on the part of most players, though I wouldn't complain about it because it makes most players at least half way predictable, I just long for the day someone really screws with me.

Map Making utility while we wait for something official
daringd posted a topic in General Discussion
I have been wrestling with how to get around the problems that we face when wanting to get on with building new maps for DayZ and I have finally come up with something that doesn't break any rules and shouldn't piss anyone off (shouldn't). I've created a utility that emulates the DayZ file structure exactly(only with map structures and map relevant models) and then populates it using only the existing Arma2 models that are common to both games, in effect creating a 'placeholder' file system (although the new enter-able buildings are updated they mostly have the same file names as they did in Arma2). This means that anyone who wants to get on with making a new terrain can do so using the old Arma2 models as placeholders until such a time that the game has a full release and we are allowed to unpack the PBOs and use the new models. The reason it is important to emulate the DayZ file structure is so that when we are allowed to begin using the new models, we can simply delete the placeholder file structure, add the official one, and the next time we open our maps in Visitor 3 they will be populated with all the new models because all the names and paths will be the same, it's that simple. Of course we won't be able to use any of the completely new models, but it's the best we can do for the time and it's better than nothing. Anyone interested can download it from here The instructions are simple and are included in a readme file. to use the utility you need to have the following installed: Arma2 OA BIS tools 2.5.1 and you need to have run the Arma2p utility from Mikero to have extracted all of the Arma2 assets D -
Map Making utility while we wait for something official
daringd replied to daringd's topic in General Discussion
You live around the corner, I could throw you a memory stick with it on to save you the time of downloading it.... Also, I wanted to add it's hard to get this to people who make maps, because we can'T post stuff on the BIS website about DayZ, and that's where the majority of map makers are... if anyone reading this knows anyone like that, please link them in, at the moment the map making community has no central hub for communicating about DayZ. It should also be available to get from Armaholic as soon as they validate the link... -
How does this Happen? Bug or Glitch? Sneaky Bastard
daringd replied to Killicon's topic in General Discussion
I Nah, I was on hardcore, I'm not saying he definatly used a cheat... he could be an amazing shot and he could have been clearing every room before entering, but it just seems a little unlikely... anyway, we live and learn. Yeah, I've been killed by under-hanger-campers before too at NEA. I think these things will get fixed, they just need to raise the level of the floor under it so the hanger sits flush like on NWA and Balota, no biggy, I tend to stay well away from Militray spawns now the SKS is popping up in civi areas. There are, however a couple of amazing places where you can hide that are not glitches, dark spots that no one ever checks, There really is no need to glitch through walls and floors to spoil people's day and I have no real problem with getting killed fair and square, even if the other person is being a complete bastard, sure I smash my hands down on the desk and scream at the screen for a few minutes, followed by a few days of sporadic pangs of anger and lurching sobs of anguish, but that's the game, phasing through walls into glitch zones is not. Douchenozzles... I like that, but i still prefer Douchecanoe. -
How does this Happen? Bug or Glitch? Sneaky Bastard
daringd replied to Killicon's topic in General Discussion
I am sure there are lots of bugs known to people and I am convinced there are some people out there still using aim-bots and other dirty tricks to "play" the game with. An example: I have a habit of logging out in low value houses, places where people rarely go, mostly because I have to log out quickly sometimes with next to no warmning, and if I am in a city, i simply don't have time to run to a forest.... but that is besides the point, I logged back in (hardcore server) to a house I had logged out inside of and was happy to see that the doors were still closed, I felt fairly safe since there was no one around, and if anyone did turn up, then I would be able to hear them coming up the stairs, it was one of those big red ones (similar to the big green ones). and I began to sort my inventory out since I was in a safe-ish spot and had time. after a few minutes of this I heard zombies agroing in the distance, within a few more minutes I heard someone enter the house... I decided to stay quiet and wait, weapon trained on the doorway. Keep in mind I had not moved at all, made no noise, or done anything that could possibly have given my position away. the door opens and no one comes in.. then after about 10 seconds the guy side steps into the room and one-shots me in the face (I briefly saw the red hit particle before the black screen dead centre of my screen). Now, no one is that good. how did this happen? I'm not exactly pissed off, apart from the fact that I can't help but think "aim-bot" he knew I was there, not just that I was in the room, but exactly where in the room, and he hit me dead centre in the face.... I don't understand why anyone would play like this, surely it kills the entuire concept of the game, no stress, you can see hiddden enemies, loot and zombies no matter wherew they hide... it's like playing minesweeper and being able to see what each square is before you click it.. pointless. -
So just wondering if anyone else is having an issue with this, I logged out in a building, and now, a few hours later I logged back in to a completely black screen, not able to walk or move, I can do direct communication and I can access my main menu, but nothing else. I'm in experimental, not one the main hive.. When in my main menu I can see that I am somewhere in some woods... is it possible my character is in some hellish limbo? could I have been cuffed and bagged in that 30 second logout time and somehow didn't die, now I'm doomed to eternal blackness? I'm slightly amused about it right now, but it is a little frustrating that I don'T really know what is happening, I'd give you a screen shot, but it's just blackness... so, imagine that. D

Experimental branch, login to black screen?

ah ha.... this would be the problem then... I didn't realise and it still lets me into the servers that are 855, I'll wait for a while.. problem solved! -
Experimental branch, login to black screen?
daringd replied to daringd's topic in General Discussion
Hey black-screen brother! looks like it's not just a case of glitched handcuffing then, I'll just wait for something to happen, I was hoping my friend could find me and kill me or... whatever, so i could reset, but I don't even know where I am, I've been calling out on direct for the last ten minutes hoping someone comes to relieve me of all my gear.. but no... no bandits when you need them huh? And i' not even sure where I am... bummer. Anyone else with this? -

Map Converted To Island With Various Weather Climates - Images For Example
daringd replied to dashx73 (DayZ)'s topic in Suggestions
Megalodon was boss.... There are a couple of more realistic reasons I can think of that might make for interesting variations on the theme 1. A fission reactor that is completely fine, but shut down and not giving off radiation, providing a reason there might be need for a nearby Uranium enrichment plant (also intact and fine) but this gives us a reason there might be a convoy removing waste from the site to a dump location that crashed nearby due to whatever was happening at the time, I think it would be too much to have an entire power plant be the source of radiation, as that would just be too big an area, and the reason for it being there? well it has to be somewhere, but... it would not really be something you would find on an island. 2. Plane crash, super easy and there is aloready one on the island. A lot of you may not realise that some civilian aircraft (such as thew boeing 747-100) use depleted uranium as counter weights, so if one of these were to crash it would give us a reason to have low levels of radiation, though someone should do a bit more research to find out a little more about the implications of something like this. 3. My favourite reason, the use of tactical nuclear weapons (as opposed to strategic nuclear weapons), or the accidental use of them, this would cause a much smaller area to have been affected and would produce higher levels of radiation than DU, though once again, more research would have to be done to learn more of what would be a realistic area of destruction. I'm sure that we could find a reason for radiation areas, or area, if we really want it in game. -
