Base building - Why is it so important to everyone?
bfisher replied to m.cab's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion

Occasionally. Like when I find a couple of DMR mags then decide if I want to risk sneaking back to the apartments north of Cherno to pick up that M14 AIM I left on a body because it only had 9 rounds and I rather have a Winchester with 30. And then trying to decide if I want to risk busting the glass to the hospital while I'm there, all the while thinking about some sniper whose probably climbing to the top of that grain elevator right now.

Base building - Why is it so important to everyone?
bfisher replied to m.cab's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
As to the "why" of base building, I think that the safe house or fortified perimeter besieged by zombies is a central theme in zombie lore. Think I Am Legend, 28 Days Later, Dead Set, The Walking Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead. You can't survive for long out in the open with zombies running around. The only reason you can do it in DayZ is because zombies have fixed spawn locations and you leave the world when you log out and go to sleep. IMHO, like everything else in DayZ, it should be organic. It doesn't make sense for one dude to build a house from scratch. It's not Minecraft and I wouldn't want to see Cherno turn into a shantytown, but you should be able to lock the doors to an existing building so zombies can't get in. Other players could bust in eventually by hatcheting or crowbarring the door though. It would also make more sense with a faster day/night cycle. Assuming you don't have NVGs, most players would probably rather hold up in a warehouse for 20 minutes and wait for dawn instead of running around with a road flare in the pitch black. -
New Spawn - What Would Your Route Be?
bfisher replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I generally go with the gas station, single entrance house on the coast, market, red houses, find an ax, clear the grain silo (or whatever it is) with the catwalk overlooking the hospital / apartment complex, loot both, head West, firehouse, church, big construction site, GTFO. At this point I should have a weapon and enough gear to survive in the wilderness. Anything else, I can pick up in the north, -
Lets not be too hard on Dimnzy. Dayz is great and I'm looking forward to the standalone, but there is a lot of room to make an even better open world zombie survival horror game.

What Problem do People have with dropping their Guns?
bfisher replied to spacecow's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Because a lot of people are actually pretty crappy shots if you start running around crazy. Plus I've won (or broke even) enough me with hatchet v AK or M16 battles that I like my odds. -
Will anyone else play KOS in SA when it comes out?
bfisher replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You're a big man...yep...a big man. -
Most people will have some kind of disease in Dayz. We should be prepared for a shitstorm of complaints
bfisher replied to ponc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Of course it's going to be KoS. Why wouldn't it? It's still an open post-apocalyptic world where supplies are in short supply and everyone will end up with a weapon. Changing the game to cater to germaphobes with OCD isn't going to change that. -
Will the new map add anything interesting to see other than Cherno and Elektro?
bfisher replied to scaramoosh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You idiots can run around Cherno and Electro buttfucking each other with Enfields and Makarovs to your heart's content. I only stick around the coast long enough to find enough supplies to get me north. You got Stary, Zernegorsk, Vybor, NWAF, Bernezino, lots of hills and woods to get lost in, all those castles, creepy-ass Green Mountain. Even Poboda Dam and NEAF are worth a look-see. Sweet Jesus, Rocket could have just made the map encompass the two twin cities of death and I think 90% of players would be happy playing Call of Duty: Drunken Hobo Edition. -
Has anyone ever traversed from one corner of the map to the other?
bfisher replied to Blondedash's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Of course. The maps big but it's not that big. -
I'll be happy if the zombies don't sound retarded.
-
You can consolidate mags now.
-
Wait, so you think we should get infected not just from zombies but falling off rocks, stepping on rocks, using gates and doors, walking down stairs to fast, tripping on the grass, getting out of a car moving 5 mph or just looking at anything dangerous!

To Everyone Complaining About 1.7.7
bfisher replied to NovaDose's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I had come back to the public hives after a long absense. Basically I had an M16, ALICE pack, at least a half dozen mags, NV goggles, rangefinder, a bunch of meat, water bottles, GPS, all the tools and supplies I would ever need. That is, all the tools and supplies except for antibiotics. Long story short, I was repeatedly donkey punched by zombies, got infected and eventually died running through Vybor and Stary Sobor desperately trying to find antibiotics. Ah well. What I did find when I respawned was that there seemed to be a lot more cooperation in Cherno an Electro. I got funneled into a church by a hoarde of zombies along with three other random players (including a bandit). Everyone was in pretty bad shape. Low ammo, infected, bleeding, low supplies. While I was beating back 20 zombies with a crowbar, the bandit died. Some hero showed up with an M4 and finished them off, so I grabbed the bandits revolver and a bunch of us went scrounging for loot. So I think maybe having less loot and really really dangerous zombies that can not only knock the shit out of you but give you a lingering infection might not be a bad thing. It did sort of make it so you couldn't waste ammo on killing other players for no reason. And honestly, I don't mind getting killed by a sniper when it forces three strangers with a hodge podge of ineffectual weapons to try to team to gether to take him out. It's a heck of a lot better than every idiot firing an AS50 from 1000 m away at each other. That said, antibiotics really do need to spawn more frequently. (or at all...I haven't seen any since the patch). -

Today I learned a valuable lesson. An M16 and an ALICE pack full of STANAG mags is not enough to protect me from getting zombie AIDS. :( -
Will SA alpha be in a worse state than the mod?
bfisher replied to JoeM (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
These are not the beans you are looking for. -
Why do I feel like IcyZ is planning on raping someone and making them his gimp sex slave? :o

Are Helicopters worth the effort?
bfisher replied to Composite Armour's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I generally play on the 300+ cars 25+ helicopter servers where they happen to be just sitting around. So yeah, it that case they are totally awesome to fly. But since I play infrequently as a lone wolf, I just can't invest that much time putting together a helicopter only to have it stolen once I log off. -
SA - Will the MMO concept use dumbed down arma engine?
bfisher replied to JackWalsh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Didn't he say the environment is actually more detailed? I'm sure the weapons will be realistic enough. The damage is already for shit in the mod. ie IRL you can't take a dozen hits from a Makarov pistol or 5 or 6 hits from an 5.56mm or 7.62mm assault rifle. -
E3 Expo - June 2013 - Interviews and Gameplay
bfisher replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
I was checking out this interview with Rocket from the E3 convention http://www.cinemablend.com/games/E3-2013-DayZ-Gameplay-Footage-Preps-Gamers-Alpha-56676.html and the standalone is actually starting to look like the real deal. Even has some lady-zombies. -
I think it would be pretty cool if Cherno had a river or two. Maybe starting around Electro, going past Tolpolka dam, up through the Sobors and maybe ending up at Poboda dam. (Or wherever. I'm not a surveyor.) I just think it would be fun to take a small boat up some crazy river Apocalypse Now style.

The number one issue my friends talk about is how the game has turned into kill on sight.
bfisher replied to scaramoosh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Look, this argument keeps coming up over and over again. 1) The game is KOS because that's how people want to play it. That's why you have all the "600 vehicles! Custom bases! Spawn with a machinegun!" servers. They want to run and gun through cherno and not care if they get killed because they can just pick up more gear in 5 minutes. 2) Who told you the game is NOT KOS? From the moment I heard about this game, the one consistent message was "beware of other players and especially bandits". 3) Maybe you need to work on your people skills? I meet friendly (or at least not immediately hostile) players all the time. If you jump out at someone with a ghillie suit and a silenced M4 and don't say anything, they are going to shoot you. If you don't want to get KOS, you need to see the other guy first, and then try to communicate with him from a tactically advantageous position. If he doesn't respond or acts weird, then kill him. 4) As it stands, the game is more or less accidently designed for KOS. There isn't much to "do". Other than some pretty scenery, there isn't a lot to explore. Once you know the lay of the land, surviving is pretty easy. Living out in the far wilderness gets pretty boring. So what do people do? They run to Cherno and Electro to get their basic gear. Then they run to NWAF or Stary Sober or try to find a heli crash in the fields up there so they can grab military hardware. Then back down to the coast to kill people in Cherno and Electro. I think the standalone might fix some of the KOS problems. The way rocket described them - controlled on the server, attracted to sound, wont stop chasing you - it sounds like it will be a lot harder to just snipe at people or start a running gun battle without attracting every zombie in the area. -
I had a friend once. I killed him for his beans.

Maybe you just have trouble making friends? I meet friendlies all the time. -
Any ideas on some cool tricks and stunts to do with a helicopter in DayZ? Off the top of my head: Landing on top of the International Hotel Flying under the catwalk of that grain elevator thingy along the railyards in Cherno That's all I got. There isn't a whole lot architecturally interesting stuff to fly over or under.
