What are your biggest concerns and fears regarding the near/far future of the game?
bfisher replied to joe_mcentire's topic in General Discussion
That for all the talk of vehicles, radios, hunting, bases, hoards of zombies and all sorts of cool environment interactions, by the time the game reaches anything like a "feature complete" state, servers will have like 2 players each. Basically a handful of people who wanted to check out this game they either heard about or played years ago that got all this hype, but then fell off the radar. -
CZ550, Horses, Tasers, Persistent Containers, and more Confirmed by Dean in Stream - video

Is the character in that video wearing Capri jeans? -
Not to mention that in Dead Rising any weapon cuts through zombies like a lawnmower through grass. Including an actual lawnmower! In DayZ it takes 20 shots with a wrench to the head to bring down a zombie. You have to be able to eventually outrun zombies. Period. I mean how else would you get away from them? I thought it was tedious in the Mod how they would follow you forever unless you exploited the AI by running through a building or hiding in a tree.

Why would it murder our computers? Doesn't the server do most of the work? I thought that was the whole point

Pending Changelog: Experimental branch: 0.34.XXXXX
bfisher replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
There are already power stations in Electro and other big cities (and power lines), I do like the idea of having more working stuff the players can interact with. -
It's a non issue. I've met plenty of people who are friendly or at least don't just kill on sight. If everyone was friendly it would be boring. I came across one situation where I ran up on an armed player looting a body while holding a new spawn at gunpoint. He barked some orders at me to stand next to the other guy, who seemed a bit clueless. Obviously the gunman could have killed me or the other guy at any time so I wasn't sure what his game was. Having recently spawned myself and having no loot other than a baseball bat, I decided to play the crazed survivor. Screaming "FOR JUSTICE!!!" I charged the gunman when he turned his attention to the dead body and swung my bat at him. The last thing I heard was "hey man...you all right?" followed by "yeah....what a fucking idiot!" It will be a lot more fun when the zombies don't suck

Yeah, if you've never played the mod, it had a very different feel (IMHO). The fact that there were zombies EVERYWHERE really made you feel like you were immediately in danger and the lone living human. Sort of an I Am Legend or beginning of 28 Days Later or The Walking Dead feel. More zombies also meant some warning against other players. Either from zombie-directed gunfire, zombie agro or the unwanted affect of zombies only spawning when players are near. If you met a random player, there was often a chance that you would find it more advantageous to work together to fight off some zombies, rather than immediately kill each other. That player and zombie bodies stuck around for a long time gave sort of an ominous feel. Like you didn't know what went down in the church where you just found 5 fully armed dead players and a dozen zombie bodies. Tents, vehicles, basic fortifications like barb wire and tank traps meant rudimentary base building. Vehicles also meant the very terrifying possibility of bandit raiders sweeping down from the hills in SUVs or even a helicopter. Animals and campfires allowed you to live off the land and avoid the terror of the big cities if you wanted. But the mods was also a lot of sniper duels at 2000m with .50 cal rifles and Call of Duty battles, occasionally interrupted by drunken hobos.

Why not have a 60mm mortar? I mean you couldn't carry much else. It's not going to help you against other players or hoards of zombies unless you were supporting some sort of clan operation. The Mod had satchel charges, grenades, light machineguns, Ural army trucks, Hueys and Little Bird helicopters and no one seemed to mind. In the future, why couldn't players craft a "technical" by attaching armor plating or heavy weapons to a jeep or pickup truck? These items should all be rare or require extensive crafting or repairs. We don't want Battlefield or COD, but we don't want everyone fighting with axes and Makarov pistols either.

Well, I would expect them to do one of two things: 1) Shuffle around aimlessly until they see or hear something, then shuffle/lurch towards whatever attracted their attention like classic George A Romero / Walking Dead zombies and try to tear it apart and eat it. 2) Shuffle around aimlessly until they see or hear something, then go apeshit and full on sprint like a lunatic on meth at whatever attracted their attention like 28 Days Later / DayZ Mod / The War Z zombies and try to tear it apart and eat it. Either way, they should be wandering around aimlessly, not standing sentry in the middle of the street.

The zombies still suck. They basically just stand perfectly motionless until you walk within a mile of them. Then at some point, (or never) they will go "blargh" and sprint at you, at which point you bop them on the head with your ax. All other melee weapons are effectively useless. In some buildings where the ground floor is elevated a bit, you will see their heads popping through the floor like a shark's fin. I do feel like there are a bit more of them. But I am looking forward to the day when (or if) there will be dozens or hundreds of them around the major PvP areas. I mean right now, Balota is just a great big weapons depot. It was a bit different in the Mod where you might find an AK but may need to use half the ammo just escaping the zombies in the area.

So depressed I couldn't even be bothered to kill anymore :(
bfisher posted a topic in General Discussion
My character started off well enough. Running around Electro in my standard drifter outfit. Jeans, cammo shirt and a bike helmet. Found an ax and a revolver with a bunch of ammo. Even ran into a cowboy and gave him a cowboy's death. But today, I just couldn't get into it. Basically dragging myself around the Electro firehouse, half-heartedly axing zombies. Came across a couple of bambis. "Hey bro! Can you kill that zombie for us!?" *Sigh* "Fine...whatever". Decided to run all the way to Cherno to try to cheer myself up. Didn't even mind when I was finally brought down by some "sniper's" 20th or so shot. -
Instead of turning my character into a zombie, the virus gave him telepathy.

I used to dress either in camos or muted civilian clothes. Now I'm going for something...darker... screen shot on pc

What Alpha Is Supposed To Be (A Discussion On Dev Direction And If The Game Will Ever Be Completed)
bfisher replied to jovlon's topic in General Discussion
I can't speak to whether Rocket knows what he's doing. And we're not his investors so we have no say in his final product. But what I do see first hand is the reason you typically don't release an "alpha" to the general public. Warning screen or not, people form their opinion of the game as soon as they start playing it. -
Why are they adding sewing machines , and not fixing the game?
bfisher replied to FrankWhite's topic in General Discussion
It's pretty ambitious to think that people will still be playing this in 2 years. -

Well...I guess the OP better keep all those pens and pieces of paper. -
I'm not in a clan, but I've teamed up with groups of random people I've met. There are benefits like safety or having people to chat with. It was more useful in the mod when there were lots of zombies everywhere.

For all the whiners complaining that they cant find any loot....
bfisher replied to overdosed (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Since loot doesn't respawn, I'd be very surprised to find any loot near the coast on a full server. -
I'm having the same problem FWIW

Do New Players Not Understand How Hard Core This Shit Is?
bfisher posted a topic in General Discussion
I'm wondering if players who are new to the standalone simply just don't know how hard core this shit is. I've been playing the mod off and on for a bit over a year. Before I even downloaded the mod, I already had some expectations from message boards and YouTube videos. So for players who are new to the standalone who are thinking about crying because they keep getting killed: * You will most likely die within 15 minutes (based off of actual server statistics) * Until you know what you're doing, you will struggle to find weapons, medicine, food and drink. * Nearly everyone you meet will be outfitted like a Spetsnaz death squad with silenced automatic weapons. If this were the mod, they would probably also have a helicopter gunship. * Back in the day there was always a sniper with a thermal scoped .50 cal rifle at Cherno, Elektro and NWAF. Stary, Balota and the corridor between Kamenka and NWAF were no picnic either. * If someone offered you a ride, it was probably to drop you off in the middle of nowhere and kill you. They would also probably rape you if that was a feature in the game. * Your biggest threats are other players, opening doors, ladders, rocks, zombies, thirst, hunger * Back in the day, you had a fair chance of dying from simply being instakilled or dropped into a Thunderdome by a hacker. * Even someone who is friendly will likely turn on you when the opportunity presents itself. * You go to known military weapon spawns and are surprised someone KoS you? What were YOU doing there? Dropping of donations to UNICEF? * I can see you. Seriously. It freaks me out because I figure if you have no idea I'm watching you, who the fuck might be watching me right now!? * If loot wasn't sort of rare, it wouldn't be a survival game. It'd be a picking shit up off the ground game. * This is a game of long hours of lonely tedium, interspersed with moments of profound terror followed by either elation or bitter rage.- 51 replies

Do New Players Not Understand How Hard Core This Shit Is?

I'm pretty sure everyone else here understands that we are talking in the context of a videogame. So really, you just make yourself sound like a massive tool. -
Pending Changelog: Experimental Branch: 0.33.114782
bfisher replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
I thought Rocket showed a video back in the day with injured players limping around and whatnot? What he should do is what you described. The splint should allows you to actually get up and walk, but slower and gimpier. Morphine or painkillers should allow you to walk at a normal speed for a period of time, but at a risk of getting addicted. Like you start puking and getting the shakes and blurry vision if you don't get more, And after some period of time, with enough food, etc, you will be all healed. -
Ok, the hours long timeout for dying is just plain stupid. Some newbie will play the game, get killed in 15 minutes, then say "fuck this shit" if he has to wait 1,6, or 24 hours to play again. So will everyone else. I don't think people killing themselves to get back to the shore or to avoid the hassle of crawling back to a hospital to be a particularly big problem in the game. Plus IRL, a lot of people might opt to kill themselves if they broke their leg in a zombie apocalypse. I like the idea of skills developing over time. Nothing like better aim or more weapon damage. But stuff like strength, speed or stamina which isn't reflected in the RL player's ability. The real reason this isn't a survival game is because without zombies, once you leave the coast, it's pretty easy to survive. It's more a picking up crap off the ground game.
