Also, is there maybe some whitelisted/passworded servers around where there's only people who play the game a bit more seriously? I'm quite new to this mod of the mod thing and private hives etc. When I played this was only just starting and frowned upon by Rocket.

Well ye I understand that. I also turned into a paranoid murderer after being killed several times by new players back when I used to play a lot. But I never just hunt somebody down for the "fun" of it. I only killed when they became a threat to me or my friend.

Oh this explains a lot. Ye I noticed, there seemed to be a lot of good weapon spawns but very few food and drink spawn locations. What other map can you recommend to me then? I have only played vanilla dayz so far, and quite extensively, so I wanted to try some new map :) And don't get me wrong, I like the PvP aspect. Some PvP situations in vanilla dayz have been what makes dayz such a special game to me. They create the most suspense in the game, when you fear for your virtual character that you managed to keep alive for several days or even weeks and have accumulated a lot of gear. I just don't like the deathmatchy PvP since it feels off in a game like dayz. I mean in a real life zombie apocalypse situation, would you try to kill someone just for "fun"? No I don't think so. You would either try to bond together or kill them for their gear but not for "fun". And this is how most players behaved when the mod was quite young. This COD deathmatch mentality has only taken over after the mod was quite popular. But then maybe I was just unlucky with my encounters/map choice and have drawn false conclusions.

I played some Dayz again after a long time of not playing the mod. I wanted to try a mod of the mod, namely Dayz Namalsk, but this probably doesn't matter. But what I noticed pretty fast is that many people (even more than in earlier days) just behave very stupidly nowadays. I had just looted a Winchester and this guy with an axe just ran at me yelling "friendly ... hey you, friendly, don't shoot" with a slight Russian accent, with a horde of zeds chasing him. Well I ran off as I didn't want to deal with his zombie friends and I thought he may be hostile. I ran and ran and he followed me for quite a while. I didn't shoot him even though I could have shot him easily. After a while I waited for him. I thought maybe he is friendly after all when he's following me for this long, armed only with an axe and he's probably not gonna stop following me anyway. But when he was near me he one hit killed me with his axe. (I don't know if the axe always is a one hit kill. When I stopped playing last time, there were no melee weapons) and then he didn't even loot my body ... Later I saw him again, he didn't have my Winchester. Then he got killed by some zeds. Even later I got shot at by some guy from afar, when I was busy fending off a horde of zeds. I stepped off a ledge by accident because of those shots and then died. Well it was pretty frustrating and I quit for the day. I know this "PvP" part does belong into the game and in my opinion does contribute a lot to the games suspense, I wouldn't want to miss it. But the problem is people don't play the game as it is intended to be played imho. I think it's legitimate to kill someone to loot his stuff etc or when he's a threat to you. But there are so many people who think dayz is another deathmatch game and this really kills the fun for me. What do you think about this aspect of the game and is it "worse" than earlier or was I just unlucky?

Very nice thread. Exactly what I was looking for!

Ye the old times when you got stuck loading all the time in "receiving ...." or whatever sentence it showed on the screen :) And when you spawned in debug forest XD I guess I will go and search for some good private hive server. It'd also be great if someone can recommend me a good one though :) I don't care for timezone. When I played I always played at night in the darkness. Imo it's way more safe in the darkness, hehe. I'd prefer more hardcore settings though, like no crosshair, no 3dperson ... just everything off that takes away from immersion.

Hey everyone. I played this mod when it was just new. It was an amazing experience and I'm still looking forward to the SA version. I have not played the mod for several months now, since after a certain time my friend and me had a lot of the high end loot and the game got boring for us. Now I wanted to start over again with a bunch of other friends who never played dayz before. Can anyone give me an update on the state of the game atm? How is the hacker problem (Luckily I stopped playing the game just at the time when the whole hacker problem arose, so I never really had to bother with it)? Would it be wise to join a private hive and what about all those mods of the mod, are they any good? I don't want my friends to experience a big hackfest because this will turn them off from this otherwise amazing mod. And it will annoy me as well. Don't really want to invest time in a character that gets killed by some script kiddie.

I think placing stuff outside the boundaries is pretty cheap. But I also think maybe they should expand the map and make it even bigger with big parts where there is only wilderness. Also you should be able to place tents IN the woods (never been able to do this yet), not just on open ground/near treeline.

Bump for some more views :)

I would suggest to get rid of the kill messages. They give away too much information when in a firefight. If for example your group is in a shootout with 2 other guys, who are camping in a building and you kill one of them, even though you didn't see one of them die, it will pop up in chat. Now you know there is only 1 guy left in the building. Or if you killed both, but didn't see them die, for example, you now know the building is clear now. Very worthy information which you should not get so easy as it is atm. Also it takes away from suspense. This is particularly bad on servers with nametags on. Sry if this has been proposed before :) What do you people think of this?

THE Night is TOO DAMN DARK Thread. Others will be deleted etc.
Serged replied to Slamz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes the game is not 100% realistic, that's why you need to eat and drink that often. But what game is? It would be pretty difficult to make a game/mod that's 100% realistic. You can fly a chopper in this game. I bet none of us (or probably almost none of us) could fly a Huey in this game if it really was made realistic. So let's just stay with the night is too dark discussion. The problem with your suggestion here is that people will still use gamma and brightness tweaks and with your fix and their tweaks they will be able to see almost as good as in daylight. If you could set it server-side like the draw distance, then it would be a better idea. But even then, people can tweak monitor and driver settings to make the game brighter.
