if your breath is frosting the air, you will get cold if you sit stil(especially if damp) even with medium weather gear. 7 years in the infantry.

I do not think there is anything lazy in aiming for a game that relies on the interplay of motivations and capabilities of the players for a conflict instead of a script. It is very challenging, especially at this map scale.

Does anyone else want to be captured/tortured?

Doesn't interest me in the least, as soon as hand cuffs are on they better enable the respawn button. -
How are we supposed to play the game right now?
PongoZ replied to UltimateGentleman's topic in General Discussion
Certainly you should not be playing right now to beat the game and get fully equipped every character. It is tougher for sure, expect to respawn a few times before you get established again. -

Ya its not working right now, but the place holders are obviosly in place to make it a very good part of the game. I was packing a rain jacket and a down jacket both green, and putting on the down jacket and a wool toque worked great, my buddies still shivering but not me. I did start a fire(outside) and it worked great to heat me up, but in gortex tops bottoms and good gloves and boots I still started getting cold very quickly as I left the fire. Very promising but flawed at the moment I would say -

I think there is a known bug where fires inside a building have the opposite effect -

The vast improvement in the state of the alpha has and will continue to attract more players. I cannot imagine that we will not have 60 player servers rolling again soon. I can still feel a zombie or player being in the area by the micro lag that announces them though. Even with 6 people on the server. -
Looks good, but his knees are bloody and his hands and mouth are not. Would look great with a missing boot.

"Freshly cut trees need to be chopped to blocks then dry for one summer before they can be put on a fire. Otherwise they'll hardly ignite, and if they do burn they do nothing but crackle and explode." lol were do people get this stuff. Freshly cut wood is inferior to properly dried wood for use in fires, but it works fine. The problem is how much work it is to get fire wood from a log without a saw to buck it. But if you can buck it and split it, you can start a roaring fire very quickly with fresh cut fur or pine. No experience trying that with hard woods. -
yes very good down side to running all the time, especially when you have no magazine and you only get one shot.....

*BUG* Has anyone else experienced this? Player spawns naked and character fails to carry over to most servers.
PongoZ replied to amazingmazer's topic in General Discussion
lol, I thought it was a feature. I said wow, hardcore, spawning in underware under the bridge in the water at vibor. Character is still alive anyway -
I noticed our WOT clan team speak had people in the DayZ channel and dropped down to find out there had been a great build this week, I told them I played it last week and it was flakey as hell but they insisted this build was solid. Logged in and after a dozen hours there is alot to appreciate going on in the game. Stability in the weather and clothing battle. Zs are dealable as long as you have something to hit them with and there are lots of things to hit them with. Inventory is very non glictchy, almost reliable. Zs are probably a little dense, but a good starting point to start tuning their sensors from. A teasing of the crafting that will be coming, Enough loot that I started on an underwear only server and actually managed to shiver my way though it. kudos Devs

Huge leap back to playability with this version

sniping is more of a challenge for the devs here because the map is not designed to constrain it like on less ambitious games. So all the terrain is there crying for long range engagements. But the rifle and environment considerations are not up to simulating it. Hell the number of actual people who could see a person at those ranges with the naked eye is constrained IRL. Despite the richness of the enviroment in the game, its still stark compared to real life. All challenges to simulating long range precision shooting, its way to easy in game.

All rifles sway unless they are in a vice. Complaining about rifle sway as if its some sillyness introduced by the devs just shows how far you have lived from rifles. bipods - sway, shooting bags - sway, some fence you find - sway. Nothing the shooter can do will hold it firm but a vice. So real shooting is learning to deal with that, doing so with 4 power optics at a head target 500 meters away in marginal lighting with a 70 year old service rifle with a 5 pound trigger pull and muzzle damage that you have put 50 rounds though in the last day is actually totally impossible.

Randomness is crap. Even a badly built Mosin will fire exactly the same given the same ammunition each time. The barrel may be bent but it's permanently bent, it doesn't randomly bend in the night. Ammo is also likely to be the same quality per box, maybe with variation per box. Every single detail does not need to be included but what they should aim for is making the player learn how to shoot and reward the ones that can be good with it. He uses an L115A3 firing a .338 lapua round - effective range 1500 yards - actual range of shot, 2707 yards, or 8121 feet. Each shot is called in by the spotter to direct the kill shot onto the target - it's not random. lol The actual published accounts of that brit shot are that he was well into his third magazine before he hit. Your first paragraph is entirely wrong. 500 meters is a long way to hit a head size target with a 4x ww2 surplus scope. The rifle will heat up a great deal and if nothing else, imediat subsequent shots would show an impact on the rifle. The snipers in WW2 were not making those shots with actual selected sniper rifles. To think you will do so with pieces gathered in abandoned barns and ammo you found beside the stove in an abandoned house is kind of crazy.

well if they are putting that amount of work into the environment it could be amazing. right now the trees are still 4 feet in the air, the doors all force you to back out before they will open you can still trigger the open door from the floor above and walking up hill your guy leans back instead of forward. but hey as long as the cattle prods to torture the newbies you capture and hacking is till as strong as ever its all good. -
For those of you that have lost faith in DayZ...
PongoZ replied to pabloottawa's topic in General Discussion
Wow you have really been around OP, heard of Voss and Tactical Air Squadron? I think the big issue with faith in this project may be that things are way harder then many of us understand. I see those zombies hopping around and jumping through me and wonder how that can still be possible. How can it be possible that the game is still so susceptible to hacking, how come no loot at all is spawning on 3 servers with 2 deaths each. It takes 3 years we hear now to develop a real game, really? when we spot you the map, the concept and many of the assets? Really? Must take 10 years when you do not get handed those things I guess. -

Should Rocket go sooner rather than later?

You would likely be surprised that people play this game for many hundreds of hours avoiding all contact with players. -
Should hopper zombies be removed for now before the next stable patch?
PongoZ replied to Zed's Dead's topic in General Discussion
Oh, thanks for explaining that, I would have thought they could test load by increasing the spawn rate of the zombies that work, but clearly from your expertise they cannot do that. So its these buggy bunnies or nothing I guess. For a second there I thought you were just reflexively supporting anything that rocket did, cause you were some kind of ass kisser or something, but now I see you are indeed an expert at game development and deployment. Thanks for sharing your expertise! -
Should hopper zombies be removed for now before the next stable patch?
PongoZ replied to Zed's Dead's topic in General Discussion
"In software dev, you don't remove functionality that has a known bug during development to address that bug. You keep testing to see if there are any other bugs." The exact opposite is true. The bug could be hiding other bugs, you have no idea as to its impacts on the testing. They likely have dozens of features that they are not putting in any build because of bugs, by your reasoning, they would all be in public. Put the bugs in public so people can "test" them. lol I do not care if they remove the zombies or not, but your reasoning is wrong and your attitude kind of hilarious. -

The boar are not native, they have been introduced be people who want lots of stuff to kill, what their introduction does to the other wildlife's situation means nothing to such people. -
Coal miner has been around the block. offensive and defensive hand grenades have different templates for safety. Some grenade systems just have a sleeve that goes over the offensive grenade that has larger chunks of metal to form a defensive grenade. But most modern grenades we see are offensive grenades, I saw a guy get hit in the chest on a poorly run grenade range from probably 30 meters, it went through his brit cam jacket, through his jacket liner and stopped in his tee shirt. scorched him though.. A weapon more capable then that would be way to hard to use in normal modern combat, we are not lined up in trench lines anymore typically. Anyone here ever thrown a V70 grenade? They were the size of a golf ball. You could put a dozen in a big combat pocket, but hard as hell to pull and throw because they were so small.

ya, give soldiers a weapon that they can throw 50 meters (if) that will kill them at 200 meters, great idea.
