US 1550-US 2522: Closing-7 Days (HFB Servers-Hosted by Gravel)

In seven days I will close the doors on US 1550 and US 2522. (Will close on October 18, 2012; 1300 hours eastern standard US time.)

Maybe, when the stand-alone comes out and there is better script-kiddie protection I will reopen them ... or at least reopen two "open" servers. For now though I'm weary of constantly monitoring them for shit-heads. I may put up two private-passworded hives in their place, but I don't 100% know for sure what I'm going to do with the two slots yet.

Right now I'm enjoying all the maps that HFB has provided me on my private hives and I can ban shit-heads that I can't on the "open" servers.

So, again, seven days. Get your gear off them while you can.

Following the rule-set for "open" DayZ servers that's posted on this forum I can't ban anyone without "proof." As an example; If I personally see a person teleporting, and Battleye and the logs don't pick it up, that's not proof and just ends up being a "he said, she said" game which I'm not going to play.

You've been around long enough to know there's a big difference in what you can and can't do with open servers -vs- private servers as far as controlling access and banning trouble makers. A trouble maker doesn't have to be a script-kiddie to be a trouble maker. Duplicating items, hacked gear, trolling other players (both in voice and text,) and generally making an ass of themselves ... technically I can't ban for any of that on open servers, but I can on a private server.

I love the PvP aspect of DayZ (been a big PvP'er since Eve-Online was in beta) and I'm not one of those admins that get pissy when killed or my gear stolen. However, I'm just tired of being dropped from 100 feet in the air, or being teleported to, or a dozen other things, and not being able to ban a suspected player because I don't have actual log proof, even if I witness it first hand. I'm also tired of burning my game-play time with constantly going through logs. I spend more than 50% of my time reading logs when I could be playing.

Sure, there's going to be hackers slip in. Sure there's going to be assholes end up with the password. But, so far, running multiple private servers and has been a whole lot less work for me than running the two "open" servers.

I hope the stand-alone fixes most of this. If it does I'll be first in line to re-open the "open" servers, but until then I'm done with them.

Howdy,

I was bummed today To find US 2522 shut down. Its the only server I have played in not totally CRAWLING w hacks. I think this was mostly

because of the realism settings you had such as no way points or 3rd person view etc, although the last two days I played a guy named L3L3

was killing everyone and finding & destroying campsites. Three days ago I ran in to someones amazing camp by accident. They were

working on a chopper, had five tents and a UAZ. I was having fun bringing them jerry cans and parts till I found some D__K had leveled

everything with a nuke or ??? and stole the UAZ. Thats when L3L3 started appearing wherever I was and killing me. Sucks, I just made

a good campsite and had a four wheeler (hours of work) when I logged in, he killed me, and then you shut down the server. Anyhow, you

wrote something about starting a private server w pass word? Sounds awesome!
