When someone joins a server, at first they have to get up (possibly a short unconscious time period) and have them let out a yawn to alert anyone nearby that someone logged in near them. Since there is a radius where zombies won't be when you log in, there is no worry there. If you logged in right next to a player accidentally, tough shit I guess, you chose a poor place to log off.
