oli83 11 Posted October 4, 2012 Hey guys, I've been playing dayz now for a cpl of months. I've gone from scatty noob to semi experienced survivor. I have a friend which I team up with regularly, when we first started playing we used to get so frustrated with player killers, especially as new spawns. But now I understand why there are many player killers out there and shoot on sight mentality. We both are geared up to our eye balls, have a cpl of vehicles and have just been spending our dayz surviving. As we are so tooled up we suffer from extreme paranoia, seeing another player within close proximity makes us do what we hated ppl do to us and that's shoot on sight!!!We do not go out our way to hunt players down (except when we see snipers picking ppl off in towns) but if we incounter a player in the same room or building we end up shooting without warning to protect what we have. It's taken us dayz to find the gear we have and we can't risk hoping the other player is not going to shoot at us.I love this game for the way it makes you think and react to scenarios differently depending on your circumstance. Has anyone else found as you Collect better gear the more protective you become or are my friend and I turning to the dark side?
pbrunk 114 Posted October 4, 2012 i am a newish player, and i recently found a dead guy with all the best stuff. FNFAL, multiple ghille suits, nvgs, range finders ect. now i play like a total pussy. I stay away from cities, run away from gunfire, pretty much only go on at night so i can use my nvgs.I now just play incredibly overcautiously. If i did somehow manage to spot another player though and he was threatening, i would protect my good shit too.
oli83 11 Posted October 4, 2012 We used to be very friendly players, helped a lot of ppl but when doing that we came across a lot of ppl who would just shoot to kill. They were probably just protecting there gear, now we are geared up we are acting just as bad.Gear is like gold! You don't wana lose it!!
Bludy 324 Posted October 4, 2012 if you start approaching people with your gun down, you will feel a lot of strong emotions when you'll survive and manage to help some newbie, and you'll understand that there aren't only murderers. then someone will shoot you with your friendly attitude and you'll learn that the point of this game isn't gear. so in the end next time you find a jackpot on a corpse you will simply save some time otherwise spent looting and start going towards firefights and search for players.p.s. after a lot of gunfights you learn some tricks and become more firm and less scared, i hate panic shots from people not used to human contacts
IncognitoNico 71 Posted October 4, 2012 (edited) I never shot somebody on sight, I rarely found anybody the same room with me since I played with a friend of mine and it always was a tactical operation, I only shot bandits and I didn't shot on sight, I returned fire, the only time I actually did something bad to a unknown player was a time when he didn't talk to me, me and my friend to him hostage and made him drop his supplies, and let him go, if you play alone, you can't risk to menace somebody since if you aim at his forehead and say "drop all your shit" he will shot you before you say anything, but when you play with a friend/group, you can do that, 2 people aiming at his forehead, he kills one person, the other one kills him. Then my PC died.... fuck you fucking PSU, destroying my components..... Obsolescence 129 Posted October 5, 2012 I've never understood how anyone enters or plays this game expecting anyone to be friendly or do anything other than go out of their way to kill you and/or take your shit. When I first started playing a couple months ago I only had a few guiding principles:1) Do whatever you must to get more/better gear.2) Kill those you can.3) Run from those you can't.So far I'm still loving my survival strategy, although it does transform a bit once I get all my gear...I also feel the urge to take less risks and "sit back and relax" once I have all my gear, but I don't like that feeling so I normally just choose to go to NWAFB/Stary and try to get into fights with people until I die. Honestly I wish they could find a way to slow weapon/item acquisition in the mid-game phase. When all you have is your trusty enfield, a single mag, a can of beans, and a canteen; these are the best of times.
herrjon 478 Posted October 5, 2012 I play as a Hero/Medic. When I first got a bunch of good gear, found in a what was later discovered as a hacker's tent, I was very paranoid of losing it, and ended up stuffing it into a tent and started fresh. It is possible to be friendly and hold onto your morals, but it's a lot harder than just shooting on sight. Most of my patients are in a teamspeak channel with me or at least have them on steam and what not, but random people I find, I have to never been seen until it's safe, have them drop their gun or at least lower it, and turn away from me. It's fine on lower pop servers, but high pop servers, it gets risky b/c in hotspots someone else is likely to discover your friendly engagement. It's also easier to not carry gear people really want, but I'm still running around with my M9 SD and L85, cause if people do kill me, I'll just start again. rayk 33 Posted October 5, 2012 I think it's a great virtual social experiment myself, not that it was or was not intended to be. I have no idea of the intentions of the devs when making this game, but I think it has become this. I think there is some correlation between how players play the game and what kind of person they truely are in real life. I think a neurologist or a psychiatrist could have a field day studying this correlation. It's one of the major factors of why the game became such a hit, imo. INickeragua 121 Posted October 5, 2012 I used to be a total bandit. Shoot on sight! Only did that for a while because I had all the gear I could ever want, and got bored of dayz. There is only so much you can do. Nowadays I play as a hero/medic. And let me tell you it isn't easy. When ever someone sees me they shoot on sight. It's like having the hero skin gives people a target to aim for. I can hardly find people who don't try to kill me.
