Real ammo names

Recommended Posts

I think it's overly complicated to name the ammunition based on the weapon. For example, the 'DMR mag' isn't only used in the DMR but also the M14. Also, the AKM and AK use different sized rounds, 5.45 versus the 7.62, but people get them mixed up constantly, they see AK and expect it to work in an AKM.

I think a more logical way of naming them would benefit the learning curve of new players.

Instead of "DMR mag" it could be "7.62 NATO"

Instead of "AK mag" call it "5.45 mag"

Maybe even work the magazine capacity into the name... "30rnd 5.45" for example.

It's a small cosmetic change, but I think it would further simply things for the player.

I actually prefer it the way it is, I say complicate it further.

Let me explain.

Rocket said that he doesn't want skill trees blah blah blah but rather people to able to use their own real world skills. Your average DayZ player at first probably had know idea there was a difference between the AKS and the AKM and probably at some point or another got annoyed "I have an AK, why isn't it taking ALL AK mags"

This is just as much a real world skill as being able to navigate using the stars. And I hope they make flying a lot harder too, I mean, I feel it puts me at a huge advantage but even without this prior knowledge I would still prefer it this way.

In my eyes I think it would be cool if you had to go to a little extra effort outside of the game to familiarise yourself with the weapons you want to use i.e. get to know what mags your weapon will or will not take, and what rounds you can load into the mags you have.

I know this is only possible for the SA as the weapons will be able to be their own objects, as will magazines and loose rounds.

The ammo names shouldn't give any hints as to what gun they are for, it would add another layer to immersion.

It would also be far better if ammunition was found in boxes as opposed to just mags all over.

I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to find a loaded magazine somewhere, but you would be more likely to find boxes of bullets and use them to fill empty magazines.

9mm rounds do my tit right in, especially M9 magazines. "Why can't I just take the bullets out of the glock mag and put them in this one?! WHY?!"

If you found a couple of magazines with your gun they would most likely be full, or have a few rounds left, but you should be required to keep magazines that have run out and refill them.

It could also be a point for cooperation, since more people would be using the same ammo types, and could fill mags for eachother, share boxes of bullets between a group, etc. etc.

I'm sure standalone will have a much better system, which is why I kept this suggestion a simple name change. People will play the mod, we shouldn't dismiss improving it.

@Toilet, this would actually make it more difficult for the people who don't know their weapons. It wouldn't be as easy as matching the two names. It would educate people who don't think there's any difference between what the rounds an AKS and an AKM fires.

One thing that always bugged me about the system we have, in my mind 'AK' means the popular AK47, which is 7.62, but in DayZ the AK mag is a 5.45 magazine that goes into the AK74s. At the very least, can the 'AK mag' be changed to 'AK74 mag'?

FYI, an AKS and AKM use the same ammuntion and same bullets. The only difference is the stock attachment point. You're thinking AK47/AKS/AKM v AK74/AKS74.

I find it hilarious how many people play this game and know nothing about firearms. I mean really, nothing at all? I can see making a mistake here or there because you don't know everything. I can see not knowing anything at all about a few guns or not knowing about belt feds or AKs or something. But nothing, nothing at all? Really?!

I think most or all of the ammo types have decent names, but it could be better. I say make ammunition and magazines 2 different things. Have to find them both. And finding a gun without a magazine should be pretty rare. I think it'd be hilarious to have to have people loading single rounds into their chamber in a gunfight.

"I found an M19!"

Me: You mean M9?

"No, an M19."

Me: You mean a G17?

"No, the M19!"

*I check dayzdb pistols page*

Me: Yeah, you must mean the M9. 15 round magazine.

"No, 7 round clip. M19."

Me: You found a half empty magazine?

"No, they all take 7 round clipz."

*I see 1911 in his hand*

Me: Oh my god.

And who uses 7 round 1911 mags?!

The magazine names were not changed from vanilla, in vanilla the most common AK is AK-10(3 or 7), which uses 5.45 russian bullets, so its called the AK mag.

It's the only AKS-74-U that's in DayZ, as far as I remember. So AKS is forgivable in my book because there's nothing to confuse it with in game.

And you have to forgive people for not knowing all the models, not everything is obvious.

I personally think if our survivors aren't military personnel, the ammo should be known as "9", "5.56", "7.62", "12.7" etc. (whatever is written on the casing)

It would help add a knowledge buffer between people who know, and people who think they know, and would involve the player more in their characters situation.

And the pistols should be Colt, Glock, Beretta etc. , More recognisable names to people who aren't well versed in gunology. And basic enough to make sense.

They should have to guess an ammo type, but it should be obvious when you can't chamber .45 you're rockin a 9.

Bullet type or .mm width is the right thing and its multiplier x12 for arrows and x8 for slugs maybe etc?
