Advice on which gun to use

Recommended Posts

I've been playing on my friend's private hive and I recently acquired more guns than I know what to do with. I'm not that experienced of a DayZ player and most of the guns either look good and/or are very popular so some advice on which to use would be appreciated.

*FN FAL- I have two currently with 4 or 5 mags of full ammo. Got both from one heli crash

*M14- Got two from more helicrashes. I've found about 15 mags already and I'm quite fond of it.

*DMR- Found it two minutes ago on my last raid to the airstrip. Mags compatible with M14, so about 15. Might be what I use because I want to be the group's sniper.

*M4A3 CC0- Maybe 9 stanag mags with 2 sd mags. I've never really seen it used before but the stats look good and it has a tactical light which may be nice for the nighttime.

*M4A1 CCO SD- I think it only fires stanag sd so I have two mags. I like the silencer.

I like all the guns and I'll probably store them and give them to my friends once I choose. If it matters, my sidearm is a M9 and it has more than enough ammo. Thanks in advance for the help. We also have a car and another on the way so I can carry more than one.

M14. Im a bandit and I really prefer this weapon over any other. It really fucks your shit up.

FAL is a pvp gun. Lots of damage but so loud you can't care about the zombie aggro.

DMR is amazing definitely better than the M14

IF you have both M4s keep them both. Use the SD when you have the ammo

@Lobo, I always have trouble making a choice between the M14 and DMR, but I would give a slight edge to the DMR since it can be used everywhere. The FAL is cool if you have no other choices, but the ammo is very rare and it is very loud without a sight. If you want to snipe the best gun you have is the DMR (do not push it past 600 meters and expect it to be very effective though), but if you want a strong weapon that is great in mid to close range combat you will never go wrong with the M14 (have a ton of hip fire and sight kills with that gun).

Thanks for the advice so far. I think what I'll do is use the DMR as my primary then just keep a M14 and M4A1 SD in the car to use when its needed.

It really depends on what kind of operator you are. If you are running in a squad that has designated assault to "scrape off zombies" and you are a crack shot, take the DMR. I will predicate this opinion with the fact that since I am a sniper, I may be biased...that being said the DMR is a fine weapon. The M14 is the exact same weapon with the exception that it has the red dot scope rather than the variable zoom...a lethal combo of CQ and sniping if you carry both. I run with an M4 cco sd for clearing "geeks" as I call the zeds and an as50 for my sniping duties although the DMR works very well and has the added benefit of working with NVG where the .50 does NOT!! Bottom line? Use every weapon, have a blast and use what feels most comfortable to YOU!!

Be aware that whilst the DMR is theoretically better, the M14 is alot easier to use and will outperform it until you get good with the DMR. TBH though, I think the DMR is pretty bad compared to other sniper rifles available in the game ie AS50, M107, M24.

I also prefer the m14 to the DMR. I think it comes down to the sights for me. I think the DMR is a great gun though as well. If your venturing out at night with NVG's, then definately go with the DMR. As for the FAL, it does great damage but I never really liked the gun myself. It is very loud, the ammo is rare, and the sights are shit in my opinion. The m4 cco sd can be a good gun for zeds, but not so much for pvp. I personally love the mp5 sd for zeds or the bizon if I don't have an mp5 sd so I never really use the m4.

Hachet.....technically its a gun

Hatchet FTW! Super-silent, 10000 shots per clip, and a not ineffective range. First thing I look for.

FN FAL: it helms from the same country that came up with the saxophone and the 'big bang theory' of the universe, both of which will get you laid. Case closed.

I like the FN fal, except I can only find ammo at heli crash sites. Love the m14... but I'm a m4 CCO SD man.... but with only two mags... i'd op to go with the m14. I like the DMR, but I get into urban or close quarters combat alot and the M14 does some damage

My main weapon of choice is the M4A1 CCO SD as primary to get rid of zeds and close players without attracting attention then the FAL cause it sounds bad ass and punches holes through everything. Sniping I prefer the DMR or sometimes if I'm lazy the AS50.

Dmr and m14 as they use the same mags so no double up on ammo. Hatchet for zeds and a mak or m1911, not really fussed on the handguns though, whatever i pick up.. Dmr is an easy choice, nvg use, nice smooth zoom, crossover ammo plus it is just damn sexy to look at :) AS 50 is just butt ugly imo plus i refuse to use it as it jsut does not suit my style.

What do you think of the m24? I think its a much better sniper rifle than the DMR and can use DMR ammo by conversion.

Slow reload and no nvg action :) I have only had it twice and was put off by the slow reload but liked the zeroing option. DMR can pile on the shots as quick as you can click and keep someone moving while you are relocating if need be. Mildots are easy once you get used to the ranges with a bit of practice. The m24 is a better precision rifle with the zeroing but like i said, get used to the mildot distances and you are golden.

The only gun out of that lot I would keep is the M4A1 CCO SD. If you're going to be a sniper you're better off with almost any other sniper rifle than the DMR unless you're planning on night sniping with NVGs

The DMR is one of my favorite snipers. You have to get a handle on shooting it though, but once you do, it will shoot as fast as you can pull the trigger. The m4a1 cco sd is overrated imo. It's only really good for zombie kills and the mp5 sd and bizon is better for that job. Hell, for me, one of the best set ups is having the m14 or dmr as your main and a pdw as a side(it uses so many different types of ammo and is good for z's).

the m4a3 cco may be essentially the same as the m4a1 cco but for some reason it feels a lot better...

Close to mid range, M14 or Mk48.

Sniping, DMR or AS50.(AS50 is kinda to cheezy for my taste)

The optimal setup for u would be:

M14, DMR

*Edit* i tend to focus on pvp, so my loadout often reflect that fact. :D

So how far away are you hitting moving targets (right to left or left to right) with the DMR?

It's basically on how you play your role really, I'm more of the CQB guy, but I can deal with long-range engagements that is within the reach of my rifle nevertheless. Anyway I suggest the M4A3 CCO, Flashlight for night situations. It provides vision or just crucially to signal your buddies at a rendesvouz point, though the flashlight is merely an asset, the relatively small size of the gun itself makes it great for close engagements.
