Losing hero skin upon logoff/login

I apologize in advance if this information is easily available, but I have not been able to find the answer in any FAQs or by searching.

My clan mates and I recently started a private server because we were tired of dealing with a$$clowns on the official servers. I grinded my way back up to hero skin and managed to get my humanity to over 6k after a long day. I logged off and when I came back my humanity was reset {as expected} but my hero skin was gone {not expected}.

Is this common for private servers? Is there any way to fix this so I don't have to grind {or glitch} my way back to 5000 humanity everytime I login to get my Hero skin back?
