I've recently been looking into hosting a Dayz server till Dayz standalone comes out, and was wondering what people would prefer private or hive servers. ( I will go through logs and be on at least 2 hours a day to keep the server hacker free)

I was also wondering what host is the best for Aus, if someone could help me out with that it would be awesome. ( I was thinking of going with either HFB or Villayer, would they be good for an Aus player base?)

Thanks.

Given private hives are sanctioned and even encouraged/preferred by Rocket (helps keeps their hive from being overloaded), the only reason to really decide between public/private hive would be the obvious pros/cons of such.

With the public hive, you have access to more population. People are more likely to just join up with your server at random.

With a private hive, people know they're starting from square one on your server. Also, if you shut your server down all their work is lost. Because of this, they may be less inclined to join up. You'd have to work more on getting a population.

But, a private hive also means combat logging becomes less enticing (eventually they have to log back in at that same spot) and there is no server hopping. Definitely a personal decision based on what's most important to you.

Private hive.. Can't even play on normal from my character position being corrupted but I've had a lotta fun on the private hives. Usually better active admins, more fun vehicles and sometimes less hackers.

I like both Private and Open servers, but just an FYI ... two hours a day will not keep an open server hacker free. If that's the extent of your available time I'd go with a private hive. You'll be able to password it and only let in people you trust.

As far as Vilayer vs HFB ... I've not used Vilayer so I can't comment either good or bad. I do, however, use HFB to run multiple servers (both open and private) and I'm extremely pleased with them.

Good luck,

DB

We just got a Vilayer server and when i raised a support ticket asking why we could not follow the Dayzmod.com host name convention and why do we spawn on the beach with no gear when we login I got this reply. Does this mean that although our server is not private hive, it is not actually available to the vast majority of the gaming population without them starting from scratch?

"With Vilayer DayZPackage servers we are not required to follow DayZmod.com rules as they operate on our own hive. Secondly we enforce our own naming policy so that they can be seen properly in DayZCommander. You will be unable to change certain parts as that would stop DayZCommander from properly parsing your server name. I apologize for the inconvenience."

Now I am thinking shall we move to a public hive platform, go private or stick with what looks like an in between option.

Our objective is to have a stable gaming platform, that is accessible by as many people as possible that is consistently up and will not be messed with by admins in any way apart from dealing with hackers and cheats.

Advice / opinions welcome

With Vilayer you basically have 3 options.

DayZ Public Hive

Vilayer Public Hive

Private Hive

From what it sounds like, you were placed on the Vilayer Public Hive. This is public amongst all other Vilayer customers who chose this option. So, you and your playerbase could hope to any other Vilayer Public Hive server and your character would persist.

It sounds like you need to order a DIFFERENT package from them if you want the DayZ Public Hive.

If you run your own Private Hive (just your server, no other servers) then you could do anything you want to it. But, your character would only exist on your server and nowhere else.

Thank you a straight answer at last, this was what I was thinking but my inexperience made me question this logic. I thought I wanted a DayZ public hive server but after reading this thread I am not so sure anymore, I will speak to the 5 other financial contributers and see what they think.

With this ever growing hacker problem maybe Vilayer public or even private hive may be the way to go after all...mmmmmmm..... decisions :-)

But, you see the thing is that I don't want to play alone and would like to play with as many people as possible therefore I probably wouldn't have a password on the server. So my question here is that would having a private hive stop or reduce hacking to some extent or will it just solve the problem of ghosting and etc.
