An effect similar to shock or broken bones, a nose should appear with a corresponding status. For example, if a fire has been lit nearby, a nose should appear with a flame under it. If a flare or a gas grenade has been dropped nearby, a nose with smoke under it should appear. If zombies have been recently slain nearby, a nose with rotten flesh under it should appear. If natural water is nearby, a nose with a water droplet should appear under it.

I agree about the smoke thing, but everything else, no. Last time I checked you can't smell water. And it should be fairly obvious if tehre are dead zombies around you, you dont need to see an icon telling you.

Lakes and rivers have a distinct smell. Yes, you can't smell the water itself, but you can smell lakes and rivers.
