Humanity consequence suggestion

Recommended Posts

When your humanity gets below a certain threshold, you begin hallucinating (fake zombies and items, maybe even fake survivors). Make the zombies able to attack, but don't make their damage permanent. They should still have a chance of knocking you out, but maybe once you kill them you get all of your stats back. This would force bandits to fire more shots and waste more ammo (notifying the countryside of their location in the process) and would generally make surviving more difficult for the them. It would still be extremely difficult to pick out a bandit just by looking at them (which I like), but it would give people an incentive to not shoot on sight. You would have to watch someone for awhile and try to see signs of insanity.

For the fake items, make it so you can pick them up and use them, but make their effects not last. Eating a can of fake beans would make you appear full, but after awhile it'd disappear and you'd be starving again. Bandits would have a harder time finding food and they'd have to store more cans due to the chance that some of their food might not be real. A random despawn timer would be nice (anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes, maybe).

As a small little thing, you could also make it so if you hear a gunshot while insane, there's a small chance that you get the "You have Died" screen without actually dying. You'd have to disconnect (which synergizes well with the new 5 second logout feature) and reconnect to get back in. It wouldn't be a major issue unless you were surrounded by zombies and it would make firefights more difficult. Admittedly, it would be very difficult to get a balanced implementation of this feature.

There could be varying levels of insanity, based upon how low your humanity is. Maybe the first level just messes with your icons a bit. Makes you look hungry when you aren't or says that you have an empty mag when you don't. After that, a few fake items spawn. Once you've gone off the deep end, that's when the zombies start appearing. Maybe a few fake survivor bodies appear in places.

I don't know how hard any of this would be to implement, but it seems like it would be a good way to deter murders without really removing that distrust between survivors.
