Okay, so riddle me this. If people are getting bored with WWII/WWI games or whatever, why is the same not happening for modern war games? Shouldn't people be getting bored of these types of games set in the future? There is a plethora of popular modern games currently.

Zombie games are much similar to games set in a futuristic/modern environment. People like and prefer it.

I guess I should rephrase that. You should be able to shoot limbs off of them. And that is the problem. Are these zombies or rage infected humans? I think it needs to be clarified because if he does say zombies, then my point remains valid. If not, then we should go with the shooting limbs off of "infected" and make it actually matter. Like shooting off a leg? The other problem is that if these are indeed infected humans, they should starve to death without any food. They beat on us like rage infected beings, but yet when we fall down they "eat" us like zombies? They need to make up their mind on which one they are.

I remeber hearing rocket say that the term for them is infected (oh god, i just said "rocket said"). You are right in that they would starve to death, but it is a game and it needs mechanics.

Sounds good. Reminds me of dinoriders.

I would an enjoy a world that is set up in novel The Road. That would be a bleak game. But seeing as there is resistance to cannibalism in DayZ, I don't think that would be likely. "yes these are the new spawns i have collected and am currently harvesting the limbs off."

Get Vampire Masquerade, solid game, even though it's dated a bit. Why the shit hasn't someone made another one?

Love the idea to have more types of zombies, especially the "Boss"! So if they would add the boss i would like him to be able to spawn a few infected dogs/wolves which would be much faster then zombies!? Why not make it possible that those kinds of infected animals spawn in the woods, not only arround towns and buildings, but just randomly on the map! They could smell you, even follow your tracks...

OP, would you like to know the real reason why zombies and not anything else?

Zombies make a good backdrop for this game, because:

They are simple. (The AI for them is as simple as "Run at detected player. Attack. Repeat")

Very little additional modelling. (devs just need to make a couple skins and a couple shambling animations and attach them onto normal player models)

They are non-threatening enough that the focus of the game is on player interaction. (as has been mentioned, after a few days of experience, you should almost never die to zombies)

Programming in thick fog and Lovecraftian horrors would be great, but the problem with Lovecraftian Horrors are:

I will never be scared of something I've seen hundreds of times. (so it doesn't matter how terrifying it is, because I will see it a lot because of how this game works)

Much higher amount of dev work. (entire new models and more complicated AI means a lot more work needed)

The focus of the game is on Player interaction. (so complex/intelligent monsters just mean more wasted dev time)

The core concept of the game is a "what would you do during the apocalypse." A pandemic of rabies is more believable to me than a cross-dimensional god-beast that devours my very pysche.

I know, but I didn't want to bring that up because facing the truth sometimes is annoying. It is certainly the real reason behind zombies. Best post so far, take my beans.

Because lets face it. If this was a game about a vampire apocalypse, would even half of the 1,200,000 be here? Would the game even work ?

Half? Maybe there would be even more people, who knows, if the game was well executed, it could be twice as good as DAYZ is currently. Anyway, I highly doubt Rocket ever made that mod for popularity.

Yes it would work, only differently.

The issue doesn' seem to be so much what they are, as how lethal they are.

PvE in the DayZ standalone should be spincter puckering lethality, make PvP truly interesting, not just something to do because your bored of dodging retards to go and pick up sniper rifles.

The whole game story and concept is made around the infected or as you call them, zombies..

DayZ ain't the first one on this idea but its pretty clear that after DayZ got that much popular, other developer teams started throwing out a shit load of zombie games. Take for example the WarZ, a totally crap rip off of DayZ.

But zeds are what makes this game.. well what it is.

So No.

And gtfo with vampires, serious?
