Professional N00b 347 Posted September 7, 2012 I use Astro A30's myself.I don't even use the mixer that they sell for it, I just use them plain and I can still locate gunshots or footsteps really easily.

Taylor_Hizzle 1 Posted September 7, 2012 So how effective is the SS can you easily tell where shots are coming from? At the moment a sniper would have to miss a few times & i would have to look in all different directions to pin point the source of the noise wich is absolute fail, in real life this definetly wouldnt be an issue n n im one of those people that likes the realism
Freefall552 26 Posted September 7, 2012 Surround sound doesn't work that very well in arma 2 for me. I'm not sure if it's just for me or everyone else too.
yorkie065 78 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) Don't go for surround sound headsets....it's a gimic! The number of speakers in each cup, confined to such a small space ruins sound quality.I personally have a set of Sennheiser HD558's headphones with a Desk Mic. Extremely good sound quality, nice heavy kicking base, but very good and clear high frequency sound, so I use them for everything! You'll hear things in songs that you never knew were there before and they put a smile across my face each time I put on some heavy music. They're comfey as hell too as they're over the ear and open backed! I used to wear them at work for 8 hours a day listening to music whilst working, and then a further 4-6 hours gaming in the evening, on a daily basis and my ears didn't get too hot 'n sweaty. The only thing that could be a downside is that they're open backed, meaning they leak a little noise going out, but it does help to keep your ears cool, or others in the house wanting your attention. I'd definitely recommend them, and they do have a headset version (Sennheiser PC360) which is pretty much exactly the same but with a mic attached. They are a £110-130 depending on which of the two you go for, but honestly they're worth every penny!Edit: With the headset/ headphones above, I've been able to pin point firing positions with ease, and sound whore when needed in DayZ and multiple other games. You can even hear 50.cal snipers firing in the distance at about 800 metres+ if there is little other sound and your listening out for them. Michaelvoodoo25 3120 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) I,ve got the roccat 5.1, I don't care what others say, they are great for dayz. No software to use, just plug them in right and your aware of all goings on around you. Have saved my life a few times.Great headset and I did buy them specifically for DayZ. Taylor_Hizzle 1 Posted September 7, 2012 Cheers guys ill have to do a bit more research into it theres more choice than a sweet shop when it comes to headsets but atleast i know im not gonna spend a decent amount of money for an epic fail >.<
puppetworx 474 Posted September 7, 2012 I'm using the Plantronics GameCom 780 headset, one of the cheaper 'surround sound' headsets. It has Dolby 'virtualized surround sound' like most of these headsets meaning they only have one speaker for each ear and a processor attempts to alter the sound to trick your ear. I was skeptical and didn't expect anything great from it. I found that for me it's not really a great improvement over stereo. The virtualization didn't help at all straight out the box, if anything it was confusing because sounds were different at times but I couldn't innately identify direction any better then with stereo, with time I've become trained in how the processor distorts sounds given on where things are around me. Perhaps the more expensive ones are better, some people swear by them, but I think it's a highly personal thing. Having said that the speaker sound quality is good and the mic is most excellent on this headset.

AMDftw 1 Posted September 7, 2012 Surround sound doesn't work that very well in arma 2 for me. I'm not sure if it's just for me or everyone else too. Works fine with my logitech g930. I can even hear below and above me.
uncledude426@gmail.com 107 Posted September 7, 2012 I can vouch for the Logitech G930 headset. The simulated 7.1 is quite remarkable in DayZ, and the directional sound is very accurate. It's easy to pinpoint the sound of gunshots or zombies...and the wireless feature is great.
taco241 393 Posted September 7, 2012 I just bought a Razer Charcharias. Very comfy, looks like it's well built. Sounds great, good price.http://www.razerzone.com/ca-en/gaming-audio/razer-carcharias
merrfack 90 Posted September 7, 2012 (edited) I use a plantronics set. They were around 80-90 dollars a couple years ago. work great. my friends playing don't hear bullets being fired when I do from a distance, and usually I can pin point it down to about 10-20 degrees of range after one or two shotshttp://www.loopygadgets.com/2010/06/plantronics-gamecom-777-surround-sound-gaming-headphones/ Edited September 7, 2012 by merrfack
PublicEnemy (DayZ) 7 Posted September 7, 2012 As others have said, surround sound headsets are a bit of a gimmick. If the headset was to actually have true surround sound, the unit would be a burden to wear.My recommendation is the comfy and decent sounding SteelSeries Siberia V2.http://steelseries.com/products/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2For some reason, I hardly use my surround sound speaker setup anymore. I only ever use this headset now.
