Something standalone absolutely needs to get right: Seperate clip/bullet counts.

Loading a gun works like this:

Each gun can take a certain range of bullet types, or sometimes only one bullet type. Guns that can fire multiple caliber bullets need to be taken into account here.

Additionally, a gun can only fire bullets if fed from a clip that will fit it. (Sometimes guns can take more than one type of clip, but not often) This is important because DayZ, the mod, doesn't currently account for this at all. At best it seems to account for guns being able to fire multiple calibers, but only occasionally. In fact, I see a lot of guns that can't be loaded with the caliber it takes for some reason. But there is no mechanic for taking into account number of clips that are available to you.

DayZ standalone needs to treat CLIPS, and BULLETS as separate items that can be combined in order to load a weapon. The bullets of the right caliber must be loaded into a clip that actually fits that weapon, and only the number of bullets you have in a clip that fits that weapon should equal your ACTUAL ammo count, as in the number of bullets you can fire before you must reload, or change clips.

And when I say reload, I mean feed bullets into the actual clip. This should take time, because you have to feed bullets into the clip by hand. You also should not be able to just magically reload your gun with bullets that you haven't loaded into a clip.

Let's say I have 45 counts of 9mm and a single 30 round clip for my MP5. In a fire fight, I should ONLY be able to effectively fire up to 30 of my rounds, before I have to stop and actually hand-reload the bullets into my clip so I can change it. If you don't have a fitting clip for your current weapon, you shouldn't be able to load it at all, even if you have the right caliber rounds, except for a single round in the chamber of the gun.

The only exception to this is hand-loaded weapons, such as revolvers, bolt-action sniper rifles, and shotguns.

Lastly, DayZ needs to account for the action type of the weapon being fired when reloading. Mainly, that if you fire every single round from a automatic weapon, you should have to rechamber the round before you can fire again. Additionally, you should be able to load a single extra round into the gun by doing this. This sort of thing won't apply to manually loaded and acting guns.

Not sure about some of the parts of this suggestion like reloading magazines taking time, but I saw somewhere they mentioned in standalone magazines were going to be refillable containers, separate from rounds.

Single-shooting from your last depleted magazine is an interesting idea. I've always liked games that did shotgun reloading right, where you hit R and the guy started feeding rounds into the magazine, but you could switch to firing if need be and interrupt the reload. Something similar on a rifle where you hit R and he gets a round out of his pocket/bandolier and feeds it into the chamber for one shot might be handy.

LOL I just shake my head at the guys that browbeat people for 'clip' vs 'magazine'. I was trying to derail that train before it built up any steam. :)

Anything that makes gun handling more realistic in games like this gets my vote every time.

If you haven't already, I highly suggest trying out a little game called "receiver" by wolfire games

Some of the BEST gun mechanics I've ever played with and would love to see something like this in the standalone. This with weapon jamming/cleaning, I couldn't imagine the kinds of stories it would create :)

I like anything that makes weapon handling more realistic, and I also agree that magazine's should act as fillable containers for bullets. All of these parts are great in your suggestion and btw this has been suggested numerous times.

I'm not sure what your talking about when you say guns fire multiple calibers, this isn't really true. There can be alot of differences between cartridges like bullet weights or amount/type of powder but the size of the actual bullet (diameter) is always the same, and that is what caliber means. The size of the cartridge is also always the same.

Maybe he means 5.56 vs .223 Remington, or 7.62 vs .308 Win as the 'different calibers'? Only thing I can think of.
