Hand and arm visual signals and shouts*

Recommended Posts

TL;DR >> Suggestion: add a bunch of standard military ground force or otherwise common hand and arm visual signals or shouts* to indicate certain actions and situations such as: "Friendly!", "Attention!", "Help!" and "I surrender!" et cetera.

*a shout would be an in-game voice command that wouldn't act like a traditional voice command radio like in most games but more of a enviromental sound that could be heard like gunshots in the distance.

Just a few of these in-game animations or shouts would replace a bunch of queries and actions that are currently done with the cumbersome and often ignored side chat or voice chat.

So, yay or nay? There's a few limitations to this IMO.

1) There shouldn't be too many gestures, just the basics that can be understood even with common sense (like the ones I mentioned earlier)

2) The animations should be recognizable enough to be practical from close to medium distances

3) The shouts would simulate real world shouting ie. hearing distance, maybe some echo and so long providing that there's an audio engine that supports this sort of thing in Arma 2. Or then it would be implemented as a sort of an exploit where a weapons gunshot sound would be replaced with the shout sound and the player would perma-equip a non-visible weapon that actually was the shout system and then go from there.

I believe that the animations would not be that hard or time consuming to implement and they can't really produce more bugs or glitches compated to major game mechanic changes - even if they were added during Alpha phase. And ontop of that, I'm pretty sure there are some useable gestures in Arma 2 already which could be used as placeholders or even final animations. What comes to shouts and voice interaction, I really have no idea if it's do'able. But it would be cool, simple and practical nonetheless.

The final amount of signals and shouts would be up to the devs and community and what they see necessary.

For more reading, below is the U.S. Army Field Manual 21-60 (Chapter 2) of hand and arm visual signals used in ground forces:

I found one similar thread with the search function, read it here:

I guess that's all, cheers and thanks for reading my suggestion. :]

Yeah and I think shouts would be pretty cool.

Like if you were closing in a group of people and you could yell "Friendly! Friendly!" instead of having to type something in chat. That would work for people with no microphone and be less hassle anyway.
