We are all infected

"I watched the exchange from a hill above, the survivor had taken down 4 zeds before proceeding into the barn unaware that his shots had attracted the attention of an unscrupulous bandit who elected to stake out the likely exit before popping the hapless survivor in the back as he exited the barn with his well earned goodies.

Tough luck I thought as the killer approached the corpse to collect his spoils - then he froze as the corpse shuddered and slowly staggered to its feet.

The surprised bandit fired again and again - the shots from his 1911 hardly even registering - it was if the infection of fresh meat gave this corpse a higher resistance to bullets than a standard zed!

The bandit was in panic mode now, firing indiscriminately and attracting more zombies from the sidelines - finally the player-corpse dropped to the ground for a second time but it was too late for the bandit who was overwhelmed by the others before he could reload."

Anyway, I figured if this sort of shit happened now and then it might make the PVP element a little more interesting.

Could a survivor rise as a stronger zombie (playable) for a few minutes, perhaps a random chance or something - how cool would that be!

That's not the point. These are infected, not actual zombies. This means that living people are converted to infected, dead people will just stay dead. I'm not sure whether the players are actually immune as Castle states.

But even still, the idea would be very cool, but it is not right in the infected universe.

Sure but also just read Zone One by Colson Whitehead - if you read and like a good zombie apocalypse then I highly recommend it.
