Purchasing a server. Need a little help.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals.

I'd just like to ask a few questions, some of them may seem stupid, but I've never bought a server before, so I'm not too sure on what is what. Just wondering if any of you could answer these questions for me.

The server I'm looking at getting is a VPS. Which, from my understanding is a dedicated slice of the CPU, RAM and disk space. Am I correct in thinking this?

Which would be better to get? A Dedi box or a VPS? The server I am thinking of getting is the VPS V from Here. Is it expensive? I'd like to go VPS / Dedicated server because I want more control over the server than I presume you get with pre-made ones?

If I went with the lower package, would the CPU be powerful enough? From my understanding, and reading of a few posts on here, I don't think it is, but thought I would ask anyway being the cheapskate I am :P

Would I want Windows 2008 Server Web Edition Or should I pay a little extra and get Windows 2008 Server Standard or Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition - 64Bit? ( They're both the same price )

Could I run more than 1 DayZ server on this VPS?

I presume 10000 GB is enough traffic for 2 servers? That's if I can have 2 running.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the help should you give it.

What do you mean by having more control over the server by using a VPS? You pretty much can't do anything since you still have to follow the rules DayZ has for hosting servers.

Here's two threads you should look through:

Read and read.

You misunderstand me. I meant more control of the server as in I can have a Killing Floor server on there aswell. Also, if I'm not mistaken, you can't view logs and stuff on pre-made ones, which is a pain in the backside if you're wanting to see if a hacker is in the server. And I was thinking of hosting a TS and a IIRC client on there too.

On http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/62195-server-hosting-rules/ it says " 3. You must not edit your server files in anyway, this includes: Modified Hive files. " but yet there is a Private Hive Forum on here and if you read some posts in there you will find a few people have a private hived server and a normal hived server and I was thinking of doing the same.

I've rented mine server from Vilayer and I can view the server logs. So I would recommend you getting the regular server from them as it's really cheap and their servers are high quality.

Also, if you rent now you can get 25% off by using the coupon: 25%OFFGS

WARNING: I'm a host and I am biased :)

Based on that link you provided, VPS 1-3 would not be powerful enough to run even 1 server.

VPS 4 might be able to run one server, but chances are it will lag tremendously and have horrible performance (especially considering their virtualization performance looks poor).

VPS 5 could run two, but again, the performance would be horrible.

*SHAMEFUL ADVERTISING TIME BELOW*

Now, if you are looking for a VPS, I would be more than happy to help you :) Our unamaged DayZ servers are $35/month and you have 100% complete over everything through remote desktop. You are guarenteed one dedicated 2.8GHz Xeon (non-HT) core and share 7 more. If you want to run two servers, I will make a custom package for you, giving you two dedicated 2.8GHz Xeon cores (non-HT) and access to 6 more shared cores for $55. I will also provide unlimited bandwidth (for your DayZ servers) and will offer FREE DayZ server setup and we will provide the instance ID's. Shoot me a PM if you would like to know more or have any questions. I'll stop the shameful self-promotion now :)

NOTE: while these are virtual private servers, they are ONLY permitted to run ARMA II servers.

A dedicated machine will always be the best option performance wise, but in most cases (unless the host is running multiple servers) those extra resources will go unused and the cost can double very easily. A VDS is synonymous with a VPS, though.

While I respect you're running a business lets not mislead people or employ scare tactics. Performance isn't the only differentiating factor and resource utilization/allocation is on the customer (ie. don't buy what you don't need). Also, to clarify a VDS and VPS are similar but not the same. Specifically a VDS can be many things as the definition is dictated by the host so educate yourself as a consumer before you make a purchase.

When it comes to any hosting you often get what you pay for. As for DayZ hosting there are lots of fly-by-night new game servers hosts popping up every week so use caution.

I did not mislead anyone nor did I use scare tactics. I simply stated an opinion (that was completely independent of the fact that I am a host) that I am guessing the majority of people here would agree with.

Actually, to "clarify", a VDS and VPS are the same thing. The terms are used synonymously with each other. You can argue 'shared' vs 'dedciated' resources, but that comes down to the host, not the term used. Google is your friend here, I'm not trying to have a virtualizartion debate.

You do get what you pay for. Don't worry though, I didn't mind the dig. We are a new startup, but you aren't going to see any negative threads pop up on us here ;)

I'll leave this thread to the op as I am sure his intent was not to have this discussion.

Go get a dedicated machine and run what you want on it if that's your fancy. Just google dedicated server and you should have tons to choose from.

Stay away from these greedy blood suckers on here. Any decent company doesn't need to troll the forums for business.

Your "company" has been in business what 2 weeks? Do you even have any customers to complain yet? Sheesh..

You're clearly off on the right path.. As a representative of a host you should consider the effect your "opinion" may have. Regardless if you reply was based on your self-serving opinion, it was misleading "those extra resources will go unused" and you employed scare tactics " the cost can double very easily". I'd say you're guessing wrong, I tend to try to help others out..

You could have saved yourself the trouble "Specifically a VDS can be many things as the definition is dictated by the host".. I guess you missed that. You may throw those terms around loosely but I assure others do not. A proper VDS can fill the gap between a VPS and a dedicated box in multiple respects.

This thread doesn't revolve around you, I thought it an appropriate time to inform the OP. Every week we have another new VPS host or two so it wasn't anything personal. It's on the consumer to do their research and choose the right host for them.

Well this sure did spiral out of control fast. All you guys are talking server jargon that goes straight over my head. Rofl.

The Vilayer that XAM linked does a dedicated server package with a Intel Xeon 5420, unlimted bandwidth, 12GB RAM and Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition for $132.35USD seems to be a decent deal right? If I get this I can RDC to it and do whatever I want. Correct?

As I said, I've not hosted or had anything to do with dedicated servers / VPS / VDS before so I'm on a learning curve on what to get.

It's just me and another guy paying for the server at the minute, which is why I kind of wanted to keep it low cost so we weren't out doing ourselves and getting a expensive package, then next month struggling to get the funds together to pay for the next month.

Bring your own Instance ID wherever you go (https://support.dayzmod.com/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0). Once you tie an instance ID to an IP it will most likely be permanent as the DayZ team NEVER seem to answer ID IP transfer tickets. The importance here is that you control the ID instead of the host, some hosts even require this.

That server you mentioned isn't ideal for a few reasons. DayZ benefits from clock speed rather then number of cores, the server can only really user 2x cores at a time. As far as memory goes the server can be set to allocate 2GB of RAM but it only uses roughly 1.5GB per server instance. As for bandwidth be cautious of unlimited/unmetered, figure 750GB-1TB per server instance to be on the safe side. Ideally look for hosts running 08 R2 Web as it is less expensive per month but don't split hairs over this.

You're not limited to game server hosts so look around for a configuration that lends itself to both DayZ and your combined wallet well.

Oh, really?

Oh yeah, no surprise honestly..

We have multiple active instances and got denied once on two new ones.. Same config as our other boxes only difference was we changed the first and last name on the account from a real name to Gameserver Moderator. We changed the name back, resubmitted, and in less then an hr had two more instance IDs.

Doesn't make much sense and now we have two blanks in our list of instances. We also once had a ticket open for 20+ days that was never responded to asking for a simple instance ID IP reassignment. It took less then an hour for a representative to ask us how to resubmit the requests differently. They NEVER replied once we did though.. lol! We had to go about things on our own, don't expect much help.

Oh yeah, no surprise honestly..

You were denied twice because we require all registrants to use a real name.

As for your IP change that you submitted a month ago, we have since added more staff to handle them. In addition, I think it would be also fair to note that in your IP change request, you did not provide us with all the required information. That works both ways.

Well aware of the reason for the denial, not that it makes any sense.

Glad to hear about the staff, hopefully it makes a difference. The big issue was the fact that a representative replied to each request in minutes only to pass us off to someone else who never got around to it. I don't know what more information then the new IP would be necessary but we included everything we were told to. If there was anything missing then that seems like the first representatives fault as he directed us on exactly how to re-submit. In the end it wouldn't have made a difference because NOBODY looked at it anyhow.

If you care to continue this feel free to PM me as our conversation doesn't have anything to do with the OP. I was simply providing an example of a situation we were once in that I've read all to many times on these forums. No need to be snarky.
